H²O, a Hyper Offense Rain Team

H²O, a Hyper Offense Rain Team

Hello everyone, and welcome to my OU RMT. This team is a rain team and has gone through many changes before it became what it is today. It is probably my most successful team as it peaked in the 700's on PO(which is good to me). Anyway, without further ado, here is H²O!

Politoed (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Drizzle
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Surf
- Encore
- Toxic
- Ice Beam
Politoed is here for its ability to set up rain when it is sent into battle. I run a defensive variant as it allows me to disrupt my opponent and spread poison around their team. Surf is there for STAB and extra power in the rain, and is used over Scald for two reasons. First, is that I will usually be poisoning my opponent first, so the burn chance isn't helpful. Also, the extra power in Surf has proven useful several times. Encore is used to trap my opponent into a status move, which will then cause them to switch out and get poisoned by Toxic. Ice Beam is for the extra coverage, most notably used against Gliscor and Dragons, especially Dragonite.

Scizor (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Bug Bite
- Bullet Punch
- Swords Dance
- Roost
Basic Swords Dance Scizor set. With Technician, Bug Bite reaches 90 base power, and Bullet Punch gets up to 60, both of which can do a lot of damage after a single Swords Dance. Roost is there mainly as a filler, but is often proved helpful to restore health and set up more Sword Dances to sweep. Bug Bite and Bullet Punch are used for STAB and power, which also provids decent coverage. Bullet Punch will allow me to outspeed faster Pokemon, most notably stuff that has set up that wiould otherwise sweep my team.

Jirachi @ Leftovers
Trait: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Thunder
- Psyshock
Jirachi plays a unique role on the team. Generally I would switch Jirachi into an attack that it resists, and then proceed to set up Substitutes and Calm Minds as they switch out. Thunder is a strong attack the gets perfect accuracy in the rain, and has pretty good coverage with Psyshock, which is there as a STAB attack and for special walls such as Blissey. Thunder also has a 60% chance to paralyze thanks to Serene Grace, which will allow me to outspeed faster threats and set up on them before proceeding to KO them. The EV's in HP bring it up to 404, allowing it to make 101 HP Substitutes, which lets it take 2 hits of Seismic Tosses and Night Shades.

Mamoswine (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Snow Cloak
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Icicle Spear
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Superpower
Good old Scarf Mamoswine. I used him a lot in UU, but now that he's in OU I can only use him here. Earthquake is there for STAB and power, and is super effective against the two other weather starters, Ninetales and Tyranitar. Stone Edge provides good coverage with Earthquake, as well as with Superpower, which is used mainly for opposing Blissey and other Normal types. Icicle Spear might seem strange, but it is actually good most of the time. It's power can range from 50, 75, 100, or 125. However, it can also break Substitutes, and also Dragonite's Multiscale, whih is why it is used over Icicle Crash(along with the fact that Icicle Crash cant be used with Superpower.)

Rotom-W @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Hydro Pump
- Trick
- Thunder
- Volt Switch
My second Scarfer. Rotom-W gets great coverage in the rain, as Hydro Pump gets boosted and Thunder gets perfect accuracy. Volt Switch can help me get momentum, although in this team it isn't used alongside U-Turn. Trick is used to cripple opposing Pokemon, most notably status Pokemon with one attack such as Ferrothorn and Blissey. Other than that, this is the standard set for Scarf Rotom-W, so there isn't much else to say.

Tornadus (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Prankster
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Taunt
- Hurricane
- Rain Dance
- Focus Blast
Lastly, I have Tornadus. This is probably my favorite member of the team as it can help my momentum and sweep at the same time. Prankster allows it to have priority on Taunt and Rain Dance, which can help my stop the opposing Pokemon from setting up or restore my weather, respectively, both times going first. Hurricane gets perfect accuracy in rain, but only gets 50% accuracy in the sun, which is another reason that Rain Dance is there. With Life Orb, Hurricane has the power to KO a large variety of Pokemon, many that aren't expecting to be KO'd so easily. Focus Blast is there for coverage, and can KO Tyranitar, sometimes even in the sand, depending on what kind of Tyranitar.

Well, that's the team. I hope you enjoyed reading this, and would especially appreciate it if you took the time to rate it so that I can help improve this team.

Hey,

The biggest threats to your team are Volcarona, Haxorus, Dragonite, Mamoswine with Sub and well played sun teams. Each one has set up opportunities on choiced mamo or rotom-w and and scare a good deal of your mons out, and once they set up, it's a 6-0. I think something like Starmie > Jirachi would work really well since you lack Rapid Spin support (which you really need for Mamo and an upcoming suggestion I have), and CM Jirachi doesn't fit well into the heavy offense style. Using a standard offensive set with Hydro Pump | Thunder | Ice Beam | Rapid Spin with Leftovers, you should be checking a lot of <361 speed mons, which is a good unboosted speed tier to check. Starmie is an effective spinner and is not setup bait for Dragonite or Haxorus.

Additionally, Tornadus can be replaced to better check pokemon like Volc and Sun teams in general (Rain Dance doesn't make the cut since it's too circumstantial). Using a Dragonite here with the standard offensive DD EVs and a moveset of Dragon Dance | Outrage | Aqua Tail | ExtremeSpeed should help you check all of those threats in a very good late game sweeper that I think will help centralize your team a little more toward an ultimate sweep. With Lum Berry on it, luck is reduced - it gives you a one time sleep absorber, and Outrage confusion will be nulled, all beneficial things to have.

All good offensive teams need rocks, and yours isn't much of an exception. I think that changing your Mamoswine's set is in order here. Using Stealth Rock | Earthquake | Ice Shard | Endeavor with a Focus Sash can ensure that you get rocks up, and if you manage to keep Mamoswine from taking damage, the Sash makes Mamo a universal set up sweeper check. Additional minor changes include giving Scizor an LO and Superpower > Roost to make it a more potent sweeper along your theme of Heavy Offense, moving Rotom-w's HP EV into Def so you take less damage from hazards, and using HP Grass over Trick to nail Gastrodon (Trick doesn't cripple much in stall that you can beat with your offensive core already).

Volcarona can cause you a lot of trouble (even in rain), setting up on Scizor, Jirachi, or Mamoswine locked in Icicle Spear or Superpower. Nothing on your team outspeeds Volcarona after a boost, while he quite simply wrecks your team with Bug Buzz. Tornadus can't take a Fire Blast / Hurricane, Scizor falls to Fire Blast in any weather, and the rest of your team can't take a Bug Buzz.
Dragon Dance Haxorus outspeeds your Mamoswine after one boost, and easily OHKOes him with Outrage, leaving you open for a sweep. Jirachi can take an Outrage but falls to Earthquake, and is 2HKOed by Outrage as well, while Psyshock is only a 3HKO back. Scizor's Bullet Punch is also a 3HKO, while +1 Outrage has a decent chance of KOing Scizor after hazard damage.
Dragonite is similar, as you have to rely on a speedtie with Mamoswine to beat him (Jolly Dragonites sweep you clean) while Multiscale protects him from Bullet Punch (which does 18% max to 4/0 Dragonite).

Changing Scizor to a Choice Band variant lets you handle Haxorus more easily, because with 248 HP Scizor always avoids the KO from +1 Outrage, and can 2HKO with priority Bullet Punch. Being able to grab momentum like Scizor is also very useful for a team like this (Scizor also pairs well with Rotom-W). The moveset I recommend is Bullet Punch / U-Turn / Superpower / Quick Attack with an EV spread of 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 Spe Adamant. Quick Attack is a better option than Pursuit here in my opionion, because it OHKOes Volcarona after Stealth Rock damage which helps your team a lot.
Changing Mamoswine to a Life Orb variant is also another thing I recommend, because that allows you to take on Haxorus and Dragonite with strong Ice Shards. Not only that, but you will be able set up Stealth Rock to keep Volcarona in check, who can really threaten your team atm. The exact moveset is Earthquake / Icicle Crash or Icicle Spear / Ice Shard / Stealth Rock @ Life Orb, with an Adamant nature and an EV spread of 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe.

If you want more security against Volcarona, try using a Dragonite > Tornadus. Using priority Rain Dance is very unfortunate, but Dragonite is an excellent weapon against stall that can beat SubCM Jirachi, and also takes on Volcarona thanks to its typing and Multiscale. Dragonite still has that amazing Hurricane, and also has ExtremeSpeed to finish off weakened Pokemon. The exact set is:

Dragonite @ Life Orb | Multiscale
Quiet | 252 Atk / 252 SpA / 4 Spe
Hurricane / Aqua Tail / ExtremeSpeed / Roost

Good luck!

Yeah so those two above me pretty much hit every nail on the head with their posts :) so my job is pretty much gunna be to drive it home.

A hyper offensive team like yours thrives on momentum, keeping your opponent on the back foot. The aim of your game should be to always be playing your best moves while your opponent must make predictable moves in order not to lose. Unfortunately with two Choice Scarf 'mons, that is going to be practically impossible for you.

All it takes is for you to lock yourself into a poor move to open the flood gates of an enemy sweeper, of which your team is extremely weak to. CS Mamoswine in particular invites many a set-up sweeper.

So firstly I would like to second Tomahawk's Choice Band Scizor over your current set. The wonderful thing about CB Scizor is that while he can be "locked" into moves, they are almost never a bad thing to be locked into. U-Turn will provide oodles of momentum for your side while his priority attacks are always going to hurt. I second this change specifically because it helps your weakness against Volcarona, Haxorus as well as a myriad of other sweepers. CB Scizor of course pairs extremely well with CS Rotom, this combo is effective because it is highly offensive and is able to grab and maintain momentum with ease.

Secondly I would second the idea of a rain abuser in Dragonite over Tornadus. Tornadus is an amazing offensive rain pokemon, but unfortunately dosen't bring much to the table besides Hurricane on Blast(whatever that means ;) With a team like yours you must be sure to cover all threats before adding power for the sake of power. Currently I think Pellegrino's set would do better on your team(more offensive), but the one Tomahawk offered is obviously a tried and true set that will always do well.

Finally I definitely recommend running Mamoswine's Endeavor Lead set suggested San_P. A team like yours lovessss rocks and this guy lays them very well, while also either eliminating a threat or as a secondary check to rampaging dragons.

A quick thing, I highly recommend running either Water Pulse or Flash Cannon over Psyshock on Jirachi. Reason being that your team really shouldn't care about Bliss/Chansey(if you replace Tornadus. With Psyshock your Jirachi becomes and invitation for Tyranitar to come in and ruin your rain. Water Pulse also comes with that groovy parafusion thang :)

Anyway I know I really didn't recommend anything of my own but seriously you go two really quality rates from some great users so be happy :) I just wanted you to really take their advice to heart and hopefully you will.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the rates guys! I tried out most of the changes each of you recommended, and I gotta admit, the team has been doing a lot better. Starmie is being a lot more useful than Jirachi ever was, it gets a lot more KOs and Rapid Spin is also helpful. CB Scizor allows me to attack directly without setting up and can help my momentum with Rotom. Dragonite has proven to be a good replacement over Tornadus, I managed to pull of a couple sweeps with him. The only thing I'm having questions about at this point is the new Mamoswine set, as it doesn't do a very good job at setting up rocks and damaging the opponent at the same time very well. It could just be me not being used to it yet, but that's what has been happening so far in my matches.

You can try a standard LO Mamo with SR if the current Mamo is becoming underwhelming, blame a certain user "f" for using the Endeavor set. If you are using the LO set, I'm not sure what to say.

I really think you should use Hammer Arm over Focus Blast on Tornadus. I've used it in the past (granted it was a specs Tornadus, and not a Life Orb), and it's just so funny to see T-tar switch in to take the Hurricane, only to get 1hkoed by an Arm to the face. Pulling that off pretty much wins you the game vs any sand team right there. And Focus Blast is just such a terrible move I find anyway.
