Kabuto (QC 2/3, unwritten)

[OVERVIEW]

  • Access to both Rapid Spin and Stealth Rock allows it to fulfill two major roles and compress roles in a team.
  • Useful Water-typing lets it beat the majority of common leads.
  • Good Attack and Defense.
  • Useful movepool.
  • Weak Armor lets Kabuto outspeed Pokemon such as Rufflet and Doduo.
  • Useful resistances to common types such as Fire, Poison and Flying.
  • Decent Flying-type check, living a Jump Kick from Doduo, a Superpower from Rowlet and two Knock Offs from Vullaby, OHKOing the former two and 2HKOing the latter one with Rock Slide.
  • Beats common leads such as Onix and Dwebble.
  • Beats Drilbur with Waterfall.
  • Beats Life Orb Diglett with Waterfall.
  • Low special bulk makes it lose to many mixed and special attackers such as Staryu, Foongus and Spritzee.
  • Common type weaknesses such as Fighting, Electric and Grass.
  • Kabuto faces competition from other rapid spinners such as Staryu and Drilbur, and other Stealth Rock setters such as Dwebble and Onix, but distinguishes itself by being one of the only two Pokemon able to effectively do both, the other being Drilbur.
[SET]
name: Offensive Support
move 1: Rapid Spin
move 2: Stealth Rock
move 3: Knock Off
move 4: Rock Slide / Waterfall
item: Eviolite
ability: Weak Armor
nature: Careful
evs: 116 HP / 36 Atk / 36 Def / 156 SpD / 156 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Rapid Spin removes hazards and breaks Sturdy on Pokemon such as Dwebble and Onix, allowing Kabuto to KO next turn with Waterfall.
  • Kabuto is a good setter of Stealth Rock thanks to its good bulk and ability to beat most other common leads, and in conjunction with Rapid Spin Stealth Rock allows for good role compression.
  • Knock Off allows Kabuto to knock off Eviolites and cripple Pokemon such as defensive Vullaby, bulky Mienfoo and Spritzee, remove Berry Juice from Sturdy leads such as Onix and Dwebble, remove Choice Scarves from common Scarf Pokemon and severely damage spinblockers.
  • Rock Slide is a secondary STAB that hits Flying-types super effectively and makes Kabuto a good Flying-type check, and its good flinch chance gives Weak Armor sets a chance to flinch slower checks.
  • Waterfall allows Kabuto to hit Ground-types harder than it would with Rock Slide and 2HKO Mudbray.

Set Details
========

  • EVs allow Kabuto to outspeed 19 Speed Choice Scarf users including Mienfoo, Pawniard, Doduo and Gastly after a Weak Armor boost, with the remaining EVs put into bulk and Attack. A spread with less Speed can be used to give Kabuto more bulk and power, although Kabuto is then vulnerable to fast Choice Scarf users.
  • Eviolite makes Kabuto bulky enough to take most physical hits, including a Superpower from Ruffled after Stealth Rock damage and nearly always a Knock Off followed by Iron Head from Pawniard.
  • Weak Armor lets Kabuto double its Speed after taking a physical hit, putting its physical bulk to good use and allowing it to KO revenge killers such as Abra and Scarf Chinchou.

Usage Tips
========

  • If the opponent has a spinblocker, make use of Knock Off on predicted switches.
  • Kabuto can be used as a lead, but should not be sent out as a lead if the opponent has a Taunt user.
  • Make use of Kabuto's bulk and resistances by switching in on resisted physical hits.
  • Kabuto can be used as a Flying-type check to Vullaby, Rufflet and Doduo.
  • If your opponent has a Geodude, Onix or Dwebble, lead with Kabuto as it can easily defeat these common leads with Knock Off and Waterfall.
  • Using Knock Off on predicted switches can remove important items and potentially a cripple a Pokemon.
  • Switching in on Rapid Spin allows Weak Armor Kabuto to double its speed while taking minimal damage.
  • Kabuto has limited longevity due to the fact that it takes high damage from special attacks, and as Weak Armor triggers takes more and more from physical attacks. Kabuto should be used as a pivot and switched in and out until its job of hazard control is done.

Team Options
========

  • Teams that need role compression appreciate Kabuto, as it functions as a Flying-type check, a hazard setter and a hazard remover.
  • Fire-types such as Ponyta, Larvesta and Magby appreciate Rapid Spin and can switch in on Grass-type moves. Flame Body users such as Larvesta and Ponyta also discourage Mienfoo.
  • Flying-types such as Vullaby and Rufflet appreciate Rapid Spin and can switch in on Ground- and Grass-type moves.
  • Grass-types can switch in on Ground- and Grass-type moves aimed at Kabuto. Foongus and Cottonee are especially useful, as they resist Fighting-type moves as well. Foongus can also beat most Grass-types with Sludge Bomb. In return, Kabuto can switch in on Poison-, Fire- and Flying-type moves for Grass-types.
  • Spinblockers and Defog deterrents such as Pumpkaboo-Super and Pawniard, respectively can prevent opponent's from removing Stealth Rock if Kabuto runs it. Pumpkaboo-Super can also switch in on Ground-type moves for Kabuto while Kabuto switches in on Flying-, Fire- and Poison-type moves aimed at Pumpkaboo.
  • Fast pivots such as Mienfoo can help to bring Weak Armor Kabuto in against physical attackers, giving it Speed boosts.
  • Pokemon such as Carvanha and Aipom that appreciate Stealth Rock appreciate Kabuto's reliable Stealth Rock setting.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • A Swift Swim set can be used on rain teams, but the lack of any Drizzle Pokemon in LC makes this unviable.
  • Aqua Jet allows Kabuto to beat Onix, Dwebble and Focus Sash Diglett more easily.
  • Waterium Z allows Kabuto to significantly damage many switchins with Hydro Vortex, although Eviolite's bulk is usually more useful.
  • Rockium Z allows Kabuto to OHKO Vullaby after Stealth Rock damage, but Eviolite and Waterium Z are usually more useful, Eviolite due to the bulk it provides, allowing Kabuto to live important hits from Pokemon such as Doduo and Rufflet and Waterium Z due to its ability to hit most switchins hard.
  • Hone Claws lets Kabuto increase its Attack and make its Rock Slides more accurate, although Kabuto does not have enough space to run Rapid Spin, Hone Claws, two attacks and still be very effective.

Checks and Counters
===================
**Electric-types**: Magnemite and Chinchou take very little damage from Kabuto and can OHKO it with Thunderbolt.

**Fighting-types**: Mienfoo, Timburr and Scraggy can switch in on Kabuto without taking much damage from it, and, in the case of Timburr and Scraggy, start setting up on Kabuto. Mienfoo can also Taunt Kabuto to prevent it setting up Stealth Rock

**Grass-types**: Foongus, Cottonee, Lileep, Ferroseed and Pumpkaboo all wall Kabuto and KO it with their Grass-type STABS. But Pumpkaboo can be severely damaged with Knock Off.

**Steel-types**: Steel-types resist Rock Slide and most of them can threaten Kabuto, such as Magnemite, Alolan Diglett, and Pawniard. Pawniard is particularly effective at this, as it resists Knock Off as well.

[OVERVIEW]
  • Why is Rapid Spin access good? Why is Stealth Rock access good? Plenty of mons get those moves. Mention that it is one of the few mons to get access to both.
  • Mention its good Attack and Defense stat.
  • Mention that it can function as a decent Flying-type check, because it lives one Jump Kick from Doduo or Superpower from Rowlet while OHKOing back with Rock Slide, or two Knock Offs from Vullaby, while 2HKOing back with Rock Slide.
  • Mention examples of common leads it beats (Onix, Dwebble)
  • Why is it good that it beats Drilbur? Mention that it can prevent Drilbur from setting up its Stealth Rock or removing Kabuto's by 2HKOing with Aqua Jet or OHKOing with Waterfall.
  • Mention examples of special and mixed attackers it loses to (Staryu, Spritzee)

[SET]
name: Offensive Support
move 1: Rapid Spin
move 2: Aqua Jet
move 3: Rock Slide / Waterfall
move 4: Knock Off / Waterfall / Stealth Rock
item: Eviolite
ability: Battle Armor
nature: Adamant
evs: 116 HP / 196 Atk / 196 Def

I think Knock Off + Rock Slide should be standard in the final two slots, as Knock Off allows Kabuto to beat common leads like Onix and Dwebble by removing their Berry Juice and then KOing with Aqua Jet, while Rock Slide allows Kabuto to function as a Flying-type check. Waterfall is slashed on both RS and Koff as a second Water STAB in order to hit Ground-, Fire-, and Rock-types harder than Aqua Jet can, notably 2HKOing Mudbray even through Stamina. Stealth Rock can be used if your team lacks a setter, as Kabuto's good physical bulk does allow it to set it up well, but it gives Kabuto a harder time against common leads because it lacks Knock Off and lack a strong Water STAB move.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
  • Mention that Knock Off can remove Choice Scarves, allowing your team to outspeed them, and Berry Juices, which allows Kabuto to KO Onix and Dwebble with Aqua Jet after Knock Off.
  • Rock Slide does not hit Dwebble harder than Waterfall does, mention Rufflet in stead.
  • Implement everything I said above (when explaining the slashes).
  • Don't mention Waterium Z if you don't slash it. For the record, I don't think it should be slashed.

Set Details
========
  • Mention that the maximum investment into Attack with an Adamant nature allows Kabuto to always KO Dwebble and Onix with Knock Off + Aqua Jet.
  • Mention that the HP and Defense investment in combination with Eviolite always allow Kabuto to take one Superpower from Rufflet after Stealth Rock damage, and nearly always Knock Off + Iron Head from Pawniard.
  • Mention Battle Armor and why you run it.

Usage Tips
========
  • Mention using Kabuto as a check for Flying-types like Doduo, Rufflet, and Vullaby.
  • Mention leading with Kabuto if your opponent has a Dwebble or Onix, as they usually lead as well and Kabuto can beat them.
  • Mention using Knock Off on predicted switches to remove an item.

Team Options
========
  • Mention examples of all categories you mentioned: Ponyta for Fire-types, Vullaby and Rufflet for Flying-types
  • Mention that Fire-types can also switch into Grass-types for Kabuto.
  • Mention that Kabuto can check Flying- and Poison-types for Grass-types.
  • Mention that spinblockers like Pumpkaboo-XL and Defog deterrents like Pawniard are useful if Kabuto is running Stealth Rock, as they can make sure it stays on the field.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • Rockium Z doesn't OHKO Vullaby, Continental Crush does. Rockium Z is the item. Also in the Rockium Z point, mention why it is less useful than Waterium Z and Eviolite.
  • Onix and Dwebble do not pull off a Weak Armor set better, as both of them always run Sturdy. In stead, mention that Omanyte does it better due to its access to Spikes and Toxic Spikes.
  • Mention the problem with Hone Claws and HP Fire (Kabuto does not have the space for either. HP Fire also forces Kabuto to run a nature that doesn't lower SpA in order to 2HKO Ferro, thus forcing it to lower one of its defenses).
  • Mention Waterium Z here as an option to do significant damage to any switchin with Hydro Vortex.

Checks and Counters
===================
  • Mention that Mienfoo can Taunt to prevent Kabuto from setting up Rocks
  • Mention Steel-types here, as they resist Kabuto's Rock-type moves. Pawniard notably also resists Knock Off
Once this is all implemented, QC 1/3
QC Stamp final.gif

amcheck, I think you know the dealio

Overview
mention Knock Off cause it is part of Kabuto's niche
mention can be outclassed be other Rapid Spinners
mention Weak Armor

Set
name: Offensive Support
move 1: Rapid Spin
move 2: Aqua Jet
move 3: Rock Slide / Waterfall
move 4: Knock Off / Waterfall / Stealth Rock
item: Eviolite
ability: Weak Armor / Battle Armor
nature: Adamant
evs: 116 HP / 196 Atk / 196 Def

Moves
Rapid Spin can break Sturdy, mostly vs. Onix as it can Aqua Jet it afterwords
Rock Slide has a good flinch chance but this is only if you want to mention it

Set Details
Weak Armor is a main part of why Kabuto has had a huge rise in popularity. Not only does it repel Rapid Spin users as it can double Kabuto's Speed, but it also helps it outspeed its revenge killers (Abra, Scarf Chou, etc.) if hit with a physical move first

Usage Tips
mention switching in on Rapid Spin boosting your speed

Team Options
pivots can bring Kabuto in safely and boost its Speed vs. physical attackers

Other Options
Weak Armor is way better than you give it credit for, and Omanyte doesn't have access to Stealth Rock, which is certainly the best hazard, especially with Flying-types running rampent

Check's and Counters
Add spin-blockers, self explanatory

Good work :D

Hey so, I was going to full check this but I'm unconvinced about the order of slashes on your moveset and I think I should hear some opinions on it before checking any farther. Tagging Corporal Levi as an avid Kabuto user to hear his thoughts. Your Overview needed a significant amount of work, though, so until I make up my mind on the rest of the analysis you can work on implementing the changes to the overview below:

You can't just say fulfill two major roles- specify that access to RS and SR allows it to compress roles for a team by removing and setting hazards in the same teamslot.
You don't need exact examples of what it beats in your overview in the way that you do. Just say that it has a useful offensive typing that gives it very good coverage against the metagame. Then, add a point discussing movepool, where you say that its access to Knock Off allows it to beat hazard setters such as Onix and Dwebble, and its access to Aqua Jet allows it to KO Pokemon that deal with other SR setters, such as Diglett and Drilbur.
Change the checks birds point to say that it has moderately useful defensive typing, giving it the ability to check birds.
Mention that it is generally outclassed by various SR setters and spinners (give examples), but that it distinguishes itself in its ability to do both in your point about it being outclassed.
This should be arranged with positives first and then negatives. Order should be along the lines of:
  • Access to RS and SR
  • Useful offensive typing
  • Good stats
  • Good movepool
  • Weak Armor
  • Useful defensive typing
  • Low Special Bulk
  • Common type weaknesses
  • Outclassed by things
Consider this QC 1.5/3, and I'll give you the rest of the second check ASAP!

After some discussion with QC team, I think this is what you should change your set to:

Changes in bold
name: Offensive Support
move 1: Rapid Spin
move 2: Stealth Rock
move 3: Knock Off
move 4: Rock Slide / Waterfall
item: Eviolite
ability: Weak Armor [deslash Battle Armor]
nature: Careful
evs: 116 HP / 116 Atk / 36 Def / 156 SpD / 76 Spe

Reasoning:
Aqua Jet is mostly useless except against a few mons like Onix and Dwebble, but those mons can be beaten with this set anyway, and it has more utility generally.
Kabuto's niche is running Rapid Spin and Stealth Rock in the same moveset. Thus, neither of these should have any slashes behind it. This leaves the last 2 moveslots for Knock Off and dual stabs. In my opinion (though some qcers might disagree), Knock Off shouldn't be slashed with anything else because the utility it gives is so important. Rock Slide is probably a slightly more useful STAB move because bird checks are marginally harder to fit on a team, but both of the last two moves can be used depending on the team.
Battle Armor is just super situational and Weak Armor is what gives Kabuto a lot of its utility- there is no reason ever not to run Weak Armor and thus Battle Armor shouldn't be slashed.
The EV spread is Levi's, apparently it gives more general bulk, if you want specifics bother him.

I tried to check the rest of this but you've mentioned Aqua Jet a lot, and with this significant of a moveset overhaul I think it makes most sense to have you implement this change and rewrite the parts of your analysis that the moveset change changes before getting another check. I'm sorry to do this because what you have looks like you put effort into it and its pretty good, but the QC team has agreed that this is the set that should be written.
Again, sorry to make you make more changes before giving you the 2/3 stamp, but when you finish VM me and I promise this will be my absolute #1 priority to QC.

Ok, lets get through this

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
The spinblockers point kind of gets lost in your knock off point. You should specifically mention that Knock Off hits spinblockers super effectively, as well as doing all the other stuff you mention.
You don't need the utility point here, this should be removed.
Stealth Rock needs to be here
You don't need to say that Rock Slide hits flying types better than anything - just say it hits them super effectively.

Usage Tips
========
Kabuto doesn't need Rock Slide to be a bird check, remove this
Why the heck is aqua jet still mentioned here
Mention that Kabuto has little longevity as it takes lots of damage from special attacks and takes more and more from physical hits the longer it stays in. Thus, it should be used as a pivot, coming in and out of battle until its hazard control work is done.

Team Options
========
The first point here should be that Kabuto should be used on teams which need its role compression because they can't afford to run a bird check, stealth rock setter, or hazard clearer in another teamslot (if this doesn't make sense, I can try and clarify)
Mention some Pokemon that like rocks up (mostly sweepers / wallbreakers)

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Mention why swift swim is bad (no auto rain setter, etc)
Honestly I don't think HP Fire is even OO worthy

Checks and Counters
===================
Mention that steel types only wall kabuto if it is running rock slide
I don't think Kabuto is especially more susceptible to burns than the average physical Pokemon, especially because it beats most burn inducers 1v1 and can continue to set rocks and spin hazards even if burned. Remove this point please.
Ghost types do not check kabuto except the ones that are already mentioned in other sections
Expand the steel types point.

3 checks later, 2/3
