[LCT Round 2] Mowtom vs. Birkal

Rules
Pokemon: 3v3
Format: Singles
DQ: Strict 72h Disqualification. One warning per player. After the warning is used (any tag after DQ interval is passed will be counted as warning), the Player has one hour to post (with full orders/pokemon, just saying "orders coming watch this space" doesn't suffice) after DQ is called to rescind it. If one hour passes, the player is DQ'd regardless of the ref posting or not. User calling DQ must tag DQ'd player. Referees please tag the combatants when you have finished your reffing. Players, if you know you're going to be away you better post a Leave of Absence BEFORE you leave, or give a very good reason in case of an emergency.

Arena
The ASB Tournament Arena
Field Type: Neutral
Complexity: Simple
Format: All

Restrictions: No Restrictions

Description: Surrounded by thousands of screaming Pokémon fans, the ASB Arena can be best described as a standard Pokémon battling arena. In the centre of the arena lies a dirt-based floor outlined to show two separate sides (with a white Poké Ball centre). Surrounding the dirt is a moat filled with water. The moat is about 4.5m wide & creates a perimeter around the dirt arena. The arena itself is 24m wide, 33m long. All moves, weathers, and abilities are legal for the match, since it is an outdoor arena with a large water source & packed dirt. Pokémon must stay in the arena (or the dimensions of the arena in the case of Flying-type Pokémon, who cannot leave the arena & cannot fly higher than 18m). This prevents Pokémon from injuring the crowd watching the tournament. There are no outside interruptions by fans, Pokémon, or other elements not associated with the current battle.

Clamperl [Taste] (M)

Type: Water
  • Water STAB; Ignores arena restrictions on Water attacks that require an external water source. Evasive Diving reduced from 6 per action Energy Cost to 5 per action.
Abilities: Shell Armor / Rattled (Unlocked)
  • This Pokemon's thick, bony outer shell prevents it from taking critical hits.
  • These Pokemon are more easily frightened by Ghost-, Bug-, and Dark-typed attacks and will raise their Speed by one (1) stage when struck by attacks of those types. If this ability was triggered by an opponent's attack, the natural stage is also adjusted.

Snugglow [Touch] (F)

Type: Electric / Poison
  • Electric STAB; immune to paralysis status.
  • Poison STAB; immunity to Poison/Toxic status. Absorb Toxic Spikes on switch-in unless Flying-typed or using the ability Levitate. -- Accuracy when using Toxic, Poison Gas, or Poison Powder, hitting even during Dig, Fly, etc. Ignore Fog's accuracy reduction. Store Command.
    • Store Command: For the next six (6) actions, this Pokemon's moves will have their poison / toxic effect chance double.
      Command Type: Type Exclusive | Accuracy: -- | Energy Cost: 5 | Priority: 0 | CT: None
Abilities: Storm Drain / Vital Spirit / Telepathy (Unlocked)
  • This Pokemon lures all water attacks to itself, altering their course away from partner Pokemon. It absorbs the water and increases its Special Attack by one (1) stage. If this ability was triggered by an opponent's attack, the natural stage is adjusted.
  • This Pokemon has a high vitality and alertness making it immune to sleep induced by other Pokemon. Its normal state of sleeplessness makes it take 1 less damage and energy/action from Ghost Curse. If it is put to sleep by a Pokemon with Mold Breaker, it will wake up the next action. If a Pokemon with Vital Spirit also has Insomnia, its Defense and Special Defense each is increased by one (1) Rank permanently, and its BRT is increased by two (2) ranks.
  • This Pokemon has a mental link with its allies in multiple battles, which allows it to avoid taking damage from allied attacks that damage each foe or the entire field like Blizzard and Earthquake. They are still affected by an opponents spread damage attacks.

Vullaby [Sight] (F)

Type: Dark / Flying
  • Dark STAB; ignores Attract and Confusion status entirely when using Dark-type damaging and non-damaging attacks.
  • Flying STAB; immunity to Ground attacks and the Arena Trap Ability except under the effects of Smack Down and Gravity, even for ground-based flying Pokemon. Will always hit foes with Dig (except other Flying types) and Dive. Cannot be hit by Dive unless the attacking Pokemon has a size class greater than four (4). Unaffected by Spikes or Toxic Spikes when switching in. Able to hit Pokemon in the evasive stage of Bounce, Fly or Sky Drop with single target moves that hit Pokemon on the field regardless of position.
Abilities: Big Pecks / Overcoat / Weak Armor (Unlocked)
  • This Pokemon's sturdy wings prevent its defense from being lowered. The rate its defense stage drops towards its natural stage after a boost is also halved from one every round to once every two (2) rounds.
  • This Pokemon has a sturdy exterior that rebuffs the elements, making it immune to damage inflicted by bad weather. The Pokemon is also immune to "Powder" moves. (Full List: Cotton Spore, Poison Powder, Powder, Rage Powder, Sleep Powder, Spore, Stun Spore.) If the Pokemon is already immune to at least one (1) kind of weather, or powder attacks by typing or a different ability, Overcoat reduces the Base Attack Power of all oncoming attacks by one (1).
  • At default the Pokemon loosens its worn defensive armor so that it will break off when an opponent uses a contact attack, reducing the Pokemon's Defense and increasing their Speed by one (1) stage for each hit. When toggled, no effect.

In this match, I get to witness first hand if I messed up horribly by not making Clamperl rank 4. Fortunately for both me and Birkal, Chinchou is pretty much the perfect answer for it. Of course Chinchou is almost perfectly countered by Snugglow so basically let us all sit back and enjoy the never ending roundabout that is switching to maintain singles matchup control. Speaking of, let us begin that with first send out. In honour of our Fighting Gym leader let us flip a cute little Makuhita

Front = Mowtom, Back = Birkal

See, the problem here is that Snugglow is your best answer to Chinchou, which in turn beats both Vullaby and Clamperl. Basically Mowtom was a bit boned by first send out here since Vullaby or Clamperl would bring out Chinchou while otherwise Snugglow is left using precious HP on lesser match ups. The latter is exactly what happened here. Snugglow did its best chicken dance and a bit of a poor sub from Birkal helped with it, but then again taking a crit from the one 4x effective attack you have to wear from the round is far from idea. Neither is doing a grand total of zero damage to Chimchar. So Birkal ends the round definitely ahead.

Well, I'd say Birkal performed pretty darn well here. A Clamperl with SE STAB and Rank 8 SpA just barely won the damage race against Chimchar here, who showed how much utility it has even while taunted. Of course it helps how much Mowtom really didn't want Birkal getting to U-Turn. I wouldn't at all be surprised to just see Birks switch the old fashioned way though, confident in most possible match ups on the field.

Well Mowtom is able to engineer the match up he wants, but has to wait a round before being able to pair that with turn order. Unfortunately a little bit of luck coupled with Birkal carefully choosing which substitution to abuse means Vullaby will have to do so being both Taunted and Burned. But on the bright side Mowtom was able to make sure that Missy lost her Dusk Stone just about as fast as every other Misdreavus in this tournament ever has.

"AND restart queue" is a strange end to a substition imo. Half of me thinks it is meant to be analogous to "AND push back actions" but it literally means start your actions again. It makes no difference at all here as both Foul Play and Knock Off do the same damage so I'm interpreting it as the former. Mowtom, if what you mean is "AND push back actions" then I suggest using that term next time

I wouldn't exactly go calling this a 'damage race'. More like a 'damage get where you are going really slowly'. With the states these two are in neither could fight their way out of a wet paper bag. Regardless Birkal maintains a slight advantage as we wait to see if either player wants to switch it up and make this a tad more interesting.

The lesson here for Mowtom is easy. K.I.S.S. Sub priority fucked with him as Vullaby was not only unable to avoid Pain Split (the only thing either of these two could do to get any real damage done), but super charged it thanks to its own Roosting. This yawnfest looks to continue next round also as I doubt Birkal wants to switch and possibly give up match-up momentum. He's at least finally broken through that Focus Sash too.

With the sheer STAB power of Clamperl it just pays to get any damage possible in on it, especially if you can do so in your worst match up. Birkal had to know that Clamperl was going to follow Chimchar in here but having turn advantage means not only is the monkeymon able to survive the round it still has a chance to leave a bit of a mark on the incoming round as Birkal's lead gets a tiny bit bigger with every coming round.
