Week 18 Calm Mind Mega Slowbro

slowbro-mega.gif

Slowbro @ Slowbronite
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 80 Def / 176 SpD
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Scald
- Psyshock
- Slack Off

Mega Slowbro is one of the bulkiest mons from the physical side in OU, and having a great ability in Shell Armor let's it avoid any unfortunate crits that would easily kill it. It's able to tank a ton of stuff, and after a few Calm Minds it becomes extremely difficult to KO. It's able to switch into the same stuff as Slowbro, but since it gained some extra defense from mega evolving, it's able to take hits a little better from the physical side.

infernape.gif

Infernape @ Life Orb
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 100 Atk / 156 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Close Combat
- Fire Blast
- Gunk Shot
- Grass Knot

Mega Slowbro is normally able to switch into Infernape without worries. However, with this EV spread and Grass Knot, if Mega Slowbro has a little bit of prior damage (not exactly hard with its poor Speed), it can be a guaranteed 2HKO with the combination of Fire Blast + Grass Knot if Stealth Rock is up.

156 SpA Life Orb Infernape Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 176 SpD Mega Slowbro: 90-107 (22.8 - 27.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock
156 SpA Life Orb Infernape Grass Knot (100 BP) vs. 252 HP / 176 SpD Mega Slowbro: 221-263 (56 - 66.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

22.8 + 56 + 12.5 = 91.3% minimum damage
(22.8+27.1)/2 + (56+66.7)/2 + 12.5 = 98.8 % average damage)

Reserving Thunderbolt Tank-fable

1186432_1362170692866_full.jpg

Clefable @ Life Orb
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 SpD
Modest Nature
- Moonblast
- Thunderbolt
- Ice Beam
- Soft-Boiled

Most people automatically assume clefable is Calm mind or Utility so presuming it has not started setting up yet foften switch in slowbro to calm mind alongside it. Few people at all scout for tank fable and even fewer check for thunderbolt which nails this variant of slowbro cleanly. Even Moonblast has a chance if rocks are up The best thing about this set is it puts in work outside of luring slowbro and takes advantage of peoples assumptions

252+ SpA Life Orb Clefable Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 176 SpD Mega Slowbro: 221-263 (56 - 66.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Life Orb Clefable Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 176 SpD Mega Slowbro: 175-208 (44.4 - 52.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Lopunny-mega @ Lopunnite
Ability: Limber
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- High Jump Kick
- Return
- Toxic
- Encore / Substitute

M-Bro is usually a GSI to M-Lopunny, resisting HJK and not taking much from return thanks to its high defence, and threatening with scald burns or psyshock in return. With toxic and encore or substitute, however, Lop can cripple Slowbro for the rest of the match, preventing it from staying in long enough to set up, and either locking it into recover or calm mind with encore, or stalling with substitute. Toxic also cripples other Lopunny counters such as Hippowdon.
Fake out, quick attack, power up punch and baton pass are all other options in th last slot but encore or sub fit with toxic better IMO.

Toxic Landorus-T

Landorus-Therian @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 8 SpD / 8 Spe
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Toxic
- Stone Edge
- Stealth Rock/Swords Dance

This is almost a standard Landorus-T but with an unusual "coverage move" in the form of Toxic (very underrated and unespected from this monster) which cripples many traditional guaranteed switch-ins such as bulky grounds and waters which can stop this thing on its track. A badly poisoned Mega Slowbro is a wasted Mega Slowbro because can't remain on the field as a sitting duck.

keldeo.gif

Keldeo @ Choice Specs
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Scald
- Secret Sword
- Hydro Pump
- Hidden Power [Bug]

Mega Slowbro can switch into most Keldeo sets pretty easily, however, it is very likely to be 2HKOed by Specs HP Bug/Electric/Grass, and always is after SR or Spikes damage, thus being unable to switch in.

252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Hidden Power Bug vs. 252 HP / 176 SpD Mega Slowbro: 192-228 (48.7 - 57.8%) -- 96.9% chance to 2HKO

Well, this is tough.

The thing with this lure is that if Mslowbro got the chance to get the plus 1, no one of this lure is effective anymore.

That being said and while all this calc are effective in catching Mslowbro off guard when switching in, I think there could be better options in the Mslowbro matchup.

I think this Latios could be good

Latios (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Thunderbolt
- Roost
- Calm Mind

I focused on both catching Mslowbro off guard and having a reliable answer to it if it already got a calm mind

Calm mind Latios is cool as luring it because usually Slowbro slack off on the expected Draco and then proceed to use Latios as Set up fodder. Latios can easily set up a calm mind and eventually win the calm mind war with Tbolt.
Tbolt is effective in both luring in Mslowbro, when at +0 and expect a Draco so that Latios can 2hko it easily and in being able to get through it after the calm mind war, while, I have to admit, it's tough and not guaranteed that Latios will win the war, but, at least, you can severely damage it win a boosted tbolt and then revenge with something else on the team.

Overall I think that this is a cool lure, while still being able to check and threaten Keldeo and Electric types. Hope you guys appreciate this :]

Challenging one! Luring Mega Slowbro is easier said than done because it's so bulky ~.~ I think the best way to get the job done is through brute force, so here is a submission:
charizard-mega-x.gif

Charizard
@ Charizardite X
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 40 HP / 252 Atk / 216 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Flare Blitz
- Outrage or Dragon Claw
- Roost

SD Charizard-X isn't anything new, but does a good job luring in Mega Slowbro regardless. Because Charizard-X doesn't frequently use SD and is more often seen using DD or WoW sets, Mega Slowbro normally feels safe switching in. However, when Mega Slowbro comes in on a SD, it's going to be met with surprise. From there, it's going to have to make a decision: die, or let another team member fall. A SD boosted Outrage cleanly 2HKOs (73 - 86.2%), and blasts away nearly any other Pokemon should they decide to switch to something else to preserve their Mega Slowbro. As such, you will very likely be killing something in the process. The only thing I dislike with Outrage is being locked and vulnerable to being revenge killed afterwards. This makes Dragon Claw a compelling choice. It doesn't do nearly as much damage as Outrage, but still beats Mega Slowbro switching in, doing 48.9 - 57.8%.

Outside of luring this round's threat, SD Charizard-X still has general utility. It's a good wallbreaker overall, and does a nice job breaking down common switch ins like Hippowdon and Landorus-T. This is useful when paired with Pokemon like LO Excadrill, who appreciates Slowbro and the mentioned bulky grounds being gone or weakened, while providing spin for Char-X. SD Char-X also does other insane things like KO Azumarill after SR with +2 Flare.

Metagross @ Metagrossite
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Meteor Mash
- Zen Headbutt
- Hammer Arm
- Grass Knot

A viable Mega Metagross set, it's able to deal with Mega Slowbro and Hippo thanks to the Tough Claws + Grass Knot combo. You can run Hasty/Naive but Jolly gets the important 2HKO's after rocks. There isn't much to say about it since it's on the smogon dex.

0- SpA Tough Claws Mega Metagross Grass Knot (100 BP) vs. 252 HP / 176 SpD Mega Slowbro: 172-204 (43.6 - 51.7%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
0- SpA Tough Claws Mega Metagross Grass Knot (120 BP) vs. 252 HP / 112 SpD Hippowdon: 238-282 (56.6 - 67.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

excadrill.gif

Excadrill @ Leftovers
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- Rapid Spin
- Toxic

When people see Excadril's Mold Breaker activate, they generally think it's a Scarf set and they wouldn't be wrong to do so. However, there's another set also carrying Mold Breaker that's often left aside: the bulky spinner set. In the best of scenarios (where M-Bro directly switches into Exca), Excadrill would be able to take off a bit more than half of M-Bro's health (and only a less than half from a Scarf set that hit twice) before getting KO'ed by an unboosted Scald. With the bulky spinner set, Excadrill simply has to Toxic M-Bro on the switch or, in a 1 vs 1 situation, Toxic it before losing only half of its health from Scald. After that, M-Bro will become dead weight for its teammates, unable to properly setup and stay alive.

This set also lets Excadrill deal with bulky Ground-, Grass- and other Water-type mons, not to mention its Toxic bypasses M-Sab's Magic Bounce thanks to Mold Breaker.
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Excadrill Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 80+ Def Slowbro: 247-292 (62.6 - 74.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Mold Breaker Excadrill Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 80+ Def Slowbro: 87-103 (22 - 26.1%) -- 7.5% chance to 4HKO

0 SpA Slowbro Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Excadrill: 306-362 (84.7 - 100.2%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
0 SpA Slowbro Scald vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Excadrill: 204-242 (48.1 - 57%) -- 42.6% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

reserving toxic chomp
garchomp.gif

Garchomp @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 248 HP / 168 Def / 92 Spe
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Toxic
- Stealth Rock
- Dragon Tail

Normally, Garchomp is completely walled against Slowbro. However, it can easily cripple Slowbro with Toxic, which prevents it from checking multiple threats over and over again, because of the damage that piles up on it. Earthquake can be used to rack up some damage if needed. Calm Mind Slowbro is not an issue whatsoever, because Dragon Tail phazes out Garchomp, preventing it from setting up. Scald has an extremely small chance to 3HKO, so you can freely use Toxic and proceed to damage it. Toxic can also be useful for bulky walls, such as Unaware Clefable, Hippowdon, Lando-T, SpDef Talon, etc. The Speed EVs ensure Garchomp to outspeed base 70's such as Bisharp, or Breloom.

Tyranitar @ Life Orb
EVs: 56 Atk / 252 SpA / 200 Spe
Rash Nature
- Fire Blast
- Ice Beam
- Dark Pulse
- Superpower

Mixed Tyranitar is a good lure into CM Mega Slowbro. Most Standard sets are incapable of truly hurting Mega Slowbro, as Crunch often fails to 2HKO (For similar reasons Mega Slowbro checks Bisharp and Weavile), but Mixed Tyranitar is a good lure into it as it can use a Life-Orb boosted Dark Pulse to get the job done. Turns out that Tyranitar's Special Attack isn't too shabby and could certainly be put to good use. While Mixed Tyranitar isn't good in this metagame, it can be used to eliminate the things that stand a chance against Tyranitar, including Gliscor, Garchomp, Heatran, Chansey, and Mega Slowbro.

Calcs:

252+ SpA Life Orb Tyranitar Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 176 SpD+ Mega Slowbro: 296-351 12.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Life Orb Tyranitar Dark Pulse vs. +1 252 HP / 176 SpD+ Mega Slowbro: 198-237 - guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and sandstorm damage

Tyranitar survives a +1 Scald, even with a Rash Nature.

isn't toxic a standard move on tank chomp? Idt it can be called "lure set"

Reserving Special Dragonite.
Dragonite @ Life Orb
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 76 Atk / 252 SpA / 180 Spe
Mild Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Focus Blast
- Thunder
- Extreme Speed
This is a unconventional set, however it works for luring in physical tanks such as Hippodown or Gliscor and M-Slowbro. Most dragonites in today's OU are physical and thus M-Slowbro will switch in, thinking that it can soak up Dragonite's attacks. 76 Atk helps for some revenge kills with E-Speed.
Relevant Calcs
252+ SpA Dragonite Thunder vs. 252 HP / 176 SpD Mega Slowbro: 216-256 (54.8 - 64.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Dragonite Thunder vs. +1 252 HP / 176 SpD Mega Slowbro: 146-172 (37 - 43.6%)
