Arena: The Sonata Theatre

Deep in the reaches of Castelia City in the Unova region, is a small corner where the Normal Gym of CAP ASB resides. At least, that's what you were told, but after exploring the city from end to end you have found nothing. You were warned that this gym was particularly difficult to find, but you didn't expect it to be this hard. Frustrated, you decide to stop in for a drink at some random coffee shop to refuel and review the directions you were given. After just a bit more walking, you find a place called the Cafe Sonata, and walk in for a drink. After ordering one, you sit in a corner of the cafe and bring out your map.

While you are reviewing the map, a man walks over and says "Say, you wouldn't happen to be looking for the ASB Gym around here would you?" You nod, and he chuckles a bit "Yeah, a lot of people get themselves lost on the way there, but I can show you where it is if you like." You swiftly take up his generous offer, and the man guides down several streets, until you finally reach a place called The Sonata Theatre. Raising your eyebrow a bit, you explain that you're looking for the gym, to which the man responds with "Yeah, it's here all right, I find it baffling that he set up shop here of all places, but hey, what can you do?" The two of you walk in, and you immediately notice a small poster noting a schedlue. What particularly strikes your interest are the events labeled "Baron Maximus's Gym", to which your guide explains "Yeah, that's the gym leader all right, he puts up a rather interesting performance every week with his gym matches. I'm sure you'll see soon enough."

Your guide directs you into the back of the theatre, explaining that you're one of the challengers for the gym here. In the back, you find a lot of up and coming thespians, stagehands, and other such people getting ready for something. Soon after you enter, a man in a blue longcoat approaches you.

7Wv0cgL.png
"Ah, Hello, I trust you've found this place without too many issues?"

You shake your head, to which the man responds.

7Wv0cgL.png
"Ah blast it, how many times do I have to tell the League to put down better directions to this place? Regardless, you're here now, and not a moment too soon. A few things about the arena before we get started. First, you can tell our stagehands to roll out a "Setting" every time you switch Pokemon. Don't worry overmuch about it, it just gives your moves a bit of extra oomph. Next, you'll want to pick out some props for your Pokemon. I have a large list of rules regarding it, but suffice to say it'll change your typing effectiveness just a little bit. That's pretty much all I have to say, just don't try and knock your opponent's props off, we can't have costumes going off in the middle of the production after all!"

Effects in Detail:
1. Every time a Pokemon is sent out onto the battlefield, the trainer must choose a "Setting" to place his Pokemon in. All that is really required here is a typing that is strong in this setting. The setting can be anything the trainer can imagine flavor-wise, so long as it's in good taste. Whichever typing you choose will get +1 BAP for all moves of that type...for both sides of the field. This setting may change every time a Pokemon comes in, even if they have been in before. Important: You MUST choose a setting and specify what effect that setting has, otherwise it will default to a Normal Arena that gives +1 BAP to Normal typed moves.

2. Every Pokemon sent out on the field may, if they choose to do so, equip a prop. The props in this arena have a strange effect on Pokemon, and allow them to choose a resistance to gain, but also forces them to choose a new weakness. The prop itself will be equipped in addition to the current held item the Pokemon has, and can be anything the trainer can think of, so long as it's in good taste. Do note that this is not compulsory, and the trainer can choose to not equip a prop. Unlike Settings, these props are permanent and may not be changed if the Pokemon comes out again.
Rulings:
a. A prop ticks a resistance/weakness either one tier up/down. For instance, a Pokemon that equips a fire resistant prop will have it's weakness shift from 2x to 1x, while it could also intensify his water weakness from 2x to 4x.

b. A prop must either create or intensify a weakness.

c. Props do not count as items for the purposes of Fling, Unburden, etc.

d. If an ability interacts with a certain typing (such as Lightningrod) then the Pokemon's weakness/resistance is assumed to be changed according to that ability. (For instance, a Pokemon with Motor Drive would be assumed to have an immunity to electric attacks, while a Pokemon with Thick Fat would be treated as though it had a resistance to Ice and Fire.

e. Immunities cannot be affected by props at all.

f. Props cannot put a weakness past 4x, or a resistance past 1/4x.

g. The Normal typing cannot be affected by a Prop (basically, you can't say all Pokemon have Normal resistance)

3. Because it would be rude to knock off an actor's disguise during a performance, moves, abilities, etc that prohibit, knock off, or change the position of an item are not allowed.

Tl:Dr Version
1. Make sure to set a typing for your Setting every time you send out a Pokemon
2. You may choose a prop to change your resistances/weaknesses by one each.
3. Items cannot be prevented from having their effect.

"Greetings! Welcome to the gym of Baron Maximus, leader of the ASB Normal Gym here is gorgeous Castelia City. Today, I have quite the tale to tell, so listen good to my story. As always, as long as the challenger doesn't speak in a way that breaks the immersion I'm fine with him not participating."

"Long ago, in a land far away from here, there was a certain kingdom. It was a beautiful kingdom, with fertile fields aplenty and a just ruler. As one might expect from such a kingdom, it had a beautiful princess. Naturally, beautiful princesses and fertile fields tend to attract all sorts of trouble. So it was with this particular day, where a group of pirates laid siege to the palace (the capital was by the waterfront) and kidnapped the princess. When the pirates left, the king sent out a proclamation that whomever could bring her back would receive quite the plentiful reward. And so it was that a brave individual left home to pursue the pirates for fame and fortune!"

"Of course, the pirates weren't going to let him have it easy."

Sending out Diagnos the Arghonaut.

The setting is, where else but a Pirate Ship on the High Seas, where the instability of the ship gives the pirates the advantage, and nets them a +1 BAP to Fighting typed attacks! He'll be taking his trusty parrot Pericles to fend off flying attacks, which will null his weakness to Flying Attacks, but the parrot is something of a liability when it comes to Ghosts, as it's scared stiff by them

frontnormal-marghonaut.png
w/Smoke Ball
Prop: Pericles (+Flying, -Ghosts)

"Ahahahaha, you scurvy dog, you really think to take on Dread Pirate Diagnos!? You'll be walking the plank long before you'll ever see the girl!"

Just throwing this out for Dogfish44 before he sends out, equips and orders: you have to pick a setting that gives you a type bonus, but you do not have to pick a prop that gives you a resistance and weakness. Just making sure that's clear.

MOvHv.gif

"Very well then. I suppose when two gym leaders are neighbours in the same city a battle is almost certain. I believe we can modify the story a little bit, no? For no matter what ship you're on, a storm brewing will make the escape rather difficult... it also doesn't help with the rescue efforts, but heroes are great at improvisation!"

Sending out Nimbus, the Cyclohm

The setting is a Giant Thunderstorm, from which the natural electricity gives anyone able to control it a boost, affording them a +1 BAP boost to Electric typed attacks. Nimbus will not wield any additional props, but there's definitely a more conventional Expert Belt wrapped around each of the Dragon's heads...

FLAVOUR (FIRST TIME FOR FLAVOUR FOR ME, WOOHOO!):
The wretched Diagnos watches with his one good eye as the mighty thunderstorm above his ship shoots lightning down onto the open seas around his ship. He also has his eye on Nimbus, the living thunderstorm invading his ship in hopes of getting back the lost princess. Nimbus gets the jump on Diagnos with a powerful Thunderbolt. The electricity surges through the pirate's Watery body, dealing big damage. Diagnos stumbles back a bit as Pericles flies a distance away squawking. Is this the anticlimactic end of our villain? Will he yield to the might of the Electrical Dragon? Does a Swashbuckler turn down a chance to punch the daylights out of some silly-looking cloud? HELL NO!! Pericles comes back to his master as Diagnos rushes at Nimbus readying a glowing white Punch. The attack lands, and the energy is Drained from Nimbus into the body of the octopus, giving him a little refreshment from the previous jolt.

Nimbus slides back a foot or two, but he's getting another attack ready right away! His stormy body unleashes a Discharge of dangerous electricity, electrocuting Diagnos and Pericles, as well as charring the surrounding items on the deck. Diagnos was a split-second underprepared for the attack, and it hurt him a little bit more than the Thunderbolt. Well Diagnos just won't take that, and he pents up all his anger into a single, underhanded, cathartic and Revengeful strike!

Nimbus reels away from the blow, only to jeer at Diagnos while firing off another Thunderbolt at him. It hits and goes right into him, dealing big damage again. Diagnos is pretty beat up, but he's still ready to beat up back! He swings another Drain Punch at Nimbus and gets some of his energy back, patching up his aching and electrified body. Amazingly though, Diagnos is not Paralyzed [despite 6 checks, wow]! He's still just as limber and mobile as he ever was and is ready to get moving again at any second.

FLAVOUR:
The Pirate Ship runs into a shallow sandbar and falls onto its side, sending Nimbus and Origin crashing into the salty shallows. The crew consisting of many Privatykes and Cawdets quickly assembles from below deck with a great deal of squabble. They all tie ropes to the ship and manage to pull it off of the sandbar and oriented correctly. The crew then boards the ship quickly and begins to escape with the princess still inside. All of this happens before either battler can get their bearings, and Nimbus tries to give chase once he's on his feet. But he's stopped by a white force field before he can leave the sandbar while patterns of grey and orange runes begin to glow beneath Nimbus' feet. The Magic Circle begins to elevate above the sandbar, and Nimbus along with it. He turns around to face Origin, who's Magic Shield is dripping off salt water. Their battlefield comes to hover at about three feet from sea level.

Nimbus begins to charge up electricity, but Origin immediately summons the Power of the Earth to attack Nimbus, and it lands a powerful blow right away using the sand of the shallows powered up by the magic of the Magic Circle. After the air is cleared of sand it becomes obvious that Nimbus has stored up a great deal of electricity for a single and complex attack, which he then releases at Origin. Before Origin has a chance to react, it's hit hard with a combination of Shock Wave and Zap Cannon. The immense amount of electricity leaves Origin as Paralyzed as it could be.

The enormous amount of energy required to use this attack leaves Nimbus Cooling Down and surrounded by the smell of ozone, but Origin is able to pull itself together (literally) after working through what it can of its Paralysis. It summons an archaic power from within the stones of its own body and fires a powerful Paleozoic-powered Wave at Nimbus, sending him reeling back and almost dealing as much damage as its previous attack.

However, Nimbus has now ready to fight again, and sends a powerful Thunderbolt at Origin, doing quite a bit of damage. Origin gets out of the attack soon enough, and it tries to summon another Earth Power eruption, but the electricity of the Paralysis interferes too much with the synapses that allow Origin to control its own body, and it's only left convulsing in midair. However, struggling with the Paralysis and the passing of time has allowed Origin to get over a bit of its Paralysis. It now stares intently at Nimbus, planning what to do next.

Also, the splash of Diagnos crashing into the ocean can be faintly heard coming off from somewhere in the distance.

"No...this cannot be...possible. No matter, a fool like you will not be able to stop our plan of sacrificing the maiden to revive the Demon Lord. COME FORTH HERALD OF THE SUN!"

And so with his last energies, the mage summoned a fearsome fire moth! Origin was down, but the fight was far from over! As soon as it came in, the fiery beast started a dance which torched the grass surrounding the factory. Then, the magic circle of the mage did not disappear, but rather it turned a blood red, this Corrupted Magic Circle gave the moth impressive Psychic abilities. As if that wasn't enough, it was covered by a Wind Aura that helped repel Rock type attacks, but like the wizard's other spells, it was susceptible to Fairy typed moves.

Then, without warning, the beast attacked!

(OOC: I just realized, Hydreigon has an illegal prop, because it created a Dark Neutrality under the current rules of the arena. I'm considering hotfixing Ruling B to state that it will strengthen the weakness to 2x, but I'm not sure as of yet.)

Yeah, I assumed that props would automagically cancel out any resistance, then make it 2x Weak... I think that came up at one point when we discussed the arena and it stuck =\
