[OVERVIEW]

* With a massive base Attack stat and access to strong dual STAB moves, priority, and excellent coverage moves, Metagross is a powerful threat in the UU metagame.
* Its unique Steel / Psychic typing along with solid defensive stats allows it to check a plethora of Psychic-, Fairy-, Normal-, and Flying-types.
* Not all shines for Metagross, as due to its low base Speed stat, it often struggles against more offensive teams that can check it with faster threats such as Cobalion, Gengar, and Hydreigon.
* Metagross also faces significant competition from other Steel-types such as Bisharp, Scizor, Cobalion, and Lucario, which all offer either access to Swords Dance, superior Speed, or a resistance to Dark-type moves.

* Meteor Mash is an incredibly strong STAB move that allows Metagross to properly check Fairy-types such as Clefable, Primarina, and Togekiss.
* Earthquake hits opposing Steel- and Fire-types such as Bisharp, Cobalion, and Entei super effectively and provides excellent neutral coverage alongside Meteor Mash.

* Thunder Punch is an option that nails bulky Water-types such as Suicune, Alomomola, and Mantine for super effective damage but provides little utility outside of these targets.

Set Details
========

* 176 Speed EVs allows Metagross to outpace fully invested Modest Primarina, while 96 Attack EVs with an Adamant nature hit a jump point. The remaining 236 available EVs are poured into HP so Metagross can be as bulky as possible while still being able to dish out solid damage.
* An alternate EV spread of maximum Attack and Speed with a Jolly nature can be used in order to at worst Speed tie opposing Metagross, Volcanion, and Bisharp and is mostly to be used in conjunction with a Life Orb and Explosion.
* Shuca Berry is the item of choice, allowing Metagross to more reliably check Mega Aerodactyl, as well as survive even boosted Earthquakes from the likes of Gliscor and Zygarde-10%.
* Colbur Berry can also be used to aid Metagross in combatting popular Dark-types such as Bisharp, Hydreigon, and Krookodile, as with it, Metagross can survive incredibly powerful attacks such as Choice Specs Dark Pulse from Hydreigon, Choice Band Knock Off from Krookodile, and +2 Sucker Punch from Bisharp and retaliate back with one of its own.
* Life Orb is an alternative choice, as it gives a significant boost to all of Metagross's attacks and aids Metagross in breaking through the aforementioned physically defensive tanks it struggles against. Life Orb does, however, cut into its bulk significantly and can make it more challenging to consistently check special attackers like Latias.
* Clear Body is useful for blocking Intimidate from Krookodile, negating the Speed drop from Sticky Web, and preventing Special Defense drops from moves such as Psychic and Shadow Ball.

Usage Tips
========

* Metagross is an incredibly powerful Pokemon and as such, forces many switches. When predicting a foe to switch into a physical tank such as Hippodown or Slowbro, it is often optimal to use Stealth Rock.
* Switch Metagross into Psychic-types such as Latias and Celebi, and weaken them with Pursuit.
* It is important to note that Metagross can be worn down rather quickly due to a lack of any form of recovery, but it needs to be at decently high HP in order to properly check the Pokemon it's supposed to. As such, do not recklessly switch Metagross into attacks, and it is often optimal to play Metagross rather safely in battles where it is obvious it will need to use Pursuit.
* Although Metagross's typing and great defensive stats allow it to check Normal-, Flying-, and Fairy-types well, it must beware of switching into coverage moves such as Earthquake from Mega Aerodactyl, Crunch from Stoutland, and Flamethrower from Clefable.
* Use Bullet Punch to pick off faster offensive threats such as Mega Aerodactyl, Terrakion, and Gengar and get some last minute chip damage on other foes.
* Depending on the opponent's team, Explosion will usually serve different purposes from battle to battle, but generally use it to either weaken a bulky Ground- or Water-type, prevent a foe from using Defog or Rapid Spin, or provide a free switch in for a teammate ready to sweep in the later stages of a battle.

Team Options
========

* Metagross is a fairly reliable Stealth Rock setter due to its offensive prowess and access to Explosion, so partners that take advantage of entry hazards to pressure the opposing team such as Bisharp, Keldeo, and Gengar are excellent teammates.
* Pokemon such as Conkeldurr, Gliscor, and Keldeo all make for solid partners alongside Metagross, as they greatly appreciate its prowess in trapping troublesome Pokemon like Latias, Starmie, and Celebi.
* Grass-type Pokemon such as Celebi, Decidueye, and Rotom-C, which can combat the ever popular Ground- and Water-types that give Metagross trouble, are excellent partners as well.
* Users of Volt Switch and U-turn such as Raikou and Hydreigon pair well alongside Metagross, as they provide free switches for it and take advantage of the Stealth Rock Metagross sets up.
* Metagross is an excellent check to popular Fairy-types such as Clefable and Togekiss, so Dark- and Fighting-types that appreciate them gone such as Hydreigon, Mienshao, and Infernape make for solid teammates. These Pokemon do an excellent job at checking the opposing Dark-types that give Metagross trouble as well.
* Hydreigon, in particular, works excellently alongside Metagross, as it can easily handle the Dark-, Water-, Ground-, and Fire-types that plague Metagross, while Metagross checks the Fairy-types that cause problems for Hydreigon.
* Furthermore, Pokemon such as Mega-Aerodactyl and Entei, which also struggle to break through bulky Ground- and Water-types, work well with Metagross, as it can severely damage these foes with Explosion, clearing the way for a teammate to wreak havoc.

* Trick effectively cripples bulky Water-types such as Suicune, Slowbro, and Alomomola for the rest of the battle.
* Pursuit is also an option for this moveslot, being capable of effectively trapping and removing threatening Pokemon such as Latias and offensive variants of Mew. However, locking Metagross into Pursuit is often suboptimal.
* When factoring in the boost from the Choice Band, Bullet Punch becomes a very strong priority move for picking off faster offensive threats such as Togekiss and Terrakion. That said, being Choice locked into Bullet Punch is not ideal outside of revenge killing and often leaves Metagross susceptible as setup bait for Pokemon such as Scizor and Bisharp.
* Lastly, Explosion is an alternative option, which serves as an absolute nuke, but is less reliable than Trick and results in Metagross fainting as well.

Set Details
========

* Maximum Attack and Speed investment with an Adamant nature allows Metagross to hit as hard and fast as possible.
* A Jolly nature can also be used in order to outspeed Timid Primarina and at least Speed tie opposing Bisharp.
* Choice Band is the selected item, as it maximizes Metagross's power and wallbreaking potential.
* Clear Body is useful for blocking Intimidate from Krookodile, negating the Speed drop from Sticky Webs, and preventing Special Defense drops from moves such as Psychic and Shadow Ball.

Usage Tips
========

* Choice Band Metagross plays differently from its other sets, requiring more prediction, as it is Choice locked into one move unless it gives away its Choice Band with Trick.
* Beware of mindlessly using Earthquake, as there is a myriad of Pokemon that are immune to Ground and will put the Metagross user in a vulnerable position.
* Use Trick only when Metagross's Choice Band is no longer needed, typically targeting a bulky Water-type that gives Metagross trouble such as Slowbro or Suicune.
* Choice Band Metagross should be used as a wallbreaker to rip apart and disrupt bulky cores for teammates to later clean through the opponent's weakened team.

Team Options
========

* Metagross is a terrific early- or mid-game wallbreaker, and as such, late-game cleaners such as Choice Scarf Keldeo, Mega Aerodactyl, and Mega Sharpedo make for great teammates.
* Choice Band Metagross is usually able to break through or cripple bulky Water- and Ground-types with Trick or repeated powerful STAB attacks, so Pokemon such as Bisharp, Mienshao, and Entei that appreciate them being removed are excellent partners alongside Metagross.
* The likes of Keldeo, Lucario, and Infernape all appreciate Metagross's ability to trap and remove Pokemon such as Latias and Starmie, and as such, make for excellent partners.
* Stealth Rock and Spikes support from Pokemon such as Forretress, Klefki, and Froslass benefits Metagross greatly, as it helps Metagross in breaking down bulkier Pokemon quickly.
* Magneton, Hydreigon, and other users of Volt Switch and U-turn are great to partner with Metagross, as they generate momentum and give Metagross free switch ins to break through the opposing team.
* Magneton, despite sharing many weaknesses with Metagross, is a particularly potent partner, as it can trap Steel-types such as Cobalion, Scizor, and Empoleon, which give Metagross problems.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* An Assault Vest set utilizing Pursuit is sound in theory, as due to its typing and increased Special Defense, Metagross more easily switches into and traps Psychic-types such as Latias, Celebi, and offensive Mew, as well as switches into Fairy-types without getting worn down quickly. However, using Assault Vest makes Metagross far weaker than Choice Band sets and struggle to combat Ground- and Dark-types more so than Shuca and Colbur Berry variants do.
* A mixed attacking set utilizing Hidden Power Fire and Grass Knot allows Metagross to lure in and KO or severely weaken Steel-, Water-, and Ground-types such as Scizor, Swampert, and Hippodown, which otherwise check Metagross with ease.
* A set consisting of Agility / Meteor Mash / Thunder Punch / Ice punch holding a Steelium Z can serve as a solid late-game cleaner against more offensively inclined teams; however, it is slightly less reliable than other variants of Metagross.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Bulky Water-types**: Bulky Water-types such as Slowbro, Swampert, and Suicune resist Metagross's Steel-type STAB moves and take little damage from Zen Headbutt. In addition, they can burn Metagross with Scald or even use it as setup fodder. However, these Pokemon must beware of Trick, Explosion, and the rare Grass Knot.

**Bulky Ground-types**: Bulky Ground-types such as Hippodown and Gastrodon threaten Metagross with super effective Ground-type STAB moves and take little damage from its attacks due to their impressive defensive stats. These Pokemon have to watch out for Grass Knot, though.

**Dark-types**: Dark-types such as Bisharp, Hydreigon, and Mega Absol are all incredibly threatening to Metagross, as they are immune to its Zen Headbutt and can do huge damage to it with a super effective Dark-type attack. Some Dark-types such as Bisharp, Krookodile, and Mega Absol are also capable of trapping Metagross with Pursuit.

**Powerful Offensive Threats**: Powerful offensive Pokemon such as Infernape, Cobalion, and Entei can typically beat Metagross in a one-on-one situation due to their powerful STAB attacks and higher Speed stats, making them problematic.

ready for qc checks. gross is obviously a pretty versatile pokemon and this meta is underdeveloped so there will probably be needed changes to certain slashes. Also, i'm sure there is some tech Z move set for Metagross that i'm ignorant to that would fit in oo (psychium z zen headbutt?), so input from qc would be tight.
 
I'm not QC but since I've used Metagross a lot I think I should say some things.

  • Zen Headbutt doesn't deserve a slash on the first set imo, it hits very few Pokemon and Explosion is much superior overall;
  • You should slash a Jolly Nature or at least mention it on both sets, as Life Orb and Choice Band already give Metagross a lot of power, and an Adamant Nature can't outspeed Timid Primarina (standard) and Speed ties with Adamant Bisharp;
  • I think you should mention Pursuit on the first set. Trapping Latias, setting SR and checking Clefable is really good;
  • * Magneton, Flygon, and other uses of Volt Switch and U-Turn are great to partner with Metagross as they generate momentum and give Metagross free switch ins to break through the opposing team." You should probably replace Flygon with Hydreigon and put a r on "uses of Volt Switch and U-turn".
 
Implemented most of the above, however I disagree with adding Pursuit to the LO Attacker set mostly due to this:
+1 252 SpA Latias Gigavolt Havoc (185 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Metagross: 292-344 (97 - 114.2%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO

Considering I give AV + Pursuit a mention in oo, I think this suffices.
 
I agree with Highways that Pursuit can be used on the first set, and just think that SR Metagross has a lot more options in general than what's outlined in the analysis. This is the set I've been using on several teams including one I used in UUPL.

Reliably trapping the vast majority of Latias sets is extremely valuable for basically every team, and like Highways said that + checking other special attackers and setting rocks is really good. I can see the Explosion / Life Orb combo on heavily offensive teams, but I feel like most teams would prefer the ability to switch into stuff, tank hits, utilize the resist berry, and still get off a decent amount of damage on what it needs to (~70 to Latias switching out, 2HKOs Cobalion, heavy damage to Prima which is what the Speed is for, etc). In Set Details you can say that "a max Attack / max Speed spread with a Jolly nature is also an option" or something like that, mostly to be used with Life Orb + Explosion.

As for the OO mixed set, I don't think you need to say that it's outclassed or that it's targets are niche - it 2HKOs what it needs to (almost everything including most of what usually switches into Metagross). I actually think it's a great set but am fine with it being OO unless other QC disagree with this, just don't make it come across as bad or an ineffective use of Metagross. Do replace the Forretress mention with Scizor, though.

Anyway, rework the first half of the analysis with the new set, and then I'll look at it for a QC check.

Looks really good. Shuca is more for checking Aero reliably anything, so add that to Set Details. Bullet Punch is really good vs Togekiss and Terrakion, so mention that. When talking about Life Orb, add that it really cuts into Metagross's bulk and its ability to check special attackers that it might need to. Add more partners that can take advantage of Lati trapping, like Conkeldurr Lucario and Gliscor. For Team Options, just switch the order of the lines so they match the order of the moves/items on the set (so Lati trapping comments first, explosion comments last). Remove the mention of Scizor, not a great Metagross partner (especially Uturn variants).

Add Pursuit to Choice Band, still a good move to get rid of (and actually OHKO) Latias and weaken other stuff. I'd replace Explosion with it and just have Explosion as a line in Moves. Add some Team Options that like Pursuit.

Add a section in Checks and Counters for "powerful offensive threats" or something like that, thinking of stuff like Cobalion, Volcanion, Infernape and stuff which can usually beat Metagross 1v1. Add Ice Punch to OO too.

in the overview, you mention competition with other steel-types, but you dont mention zor and bisharp which are 2 of the best, if not the best steels in the tier. add that in, you can add specific traits that they have in there alongside the stuff u have with coba and luke - can possibly condense it a bit.

add celebi in the grass-type section alongside decidueye and rotom, since its the best grass-type in the tier lol

mention a set of agility dual stab and tpunch with steelium z in oo, a little situational but its a cool thing ive seen before and its a nice cleaner vs offensive teams.

otherwise else, this is pretty solid. qc 2/3 once youve implemented this

For the offensive rocks set, mention when you'd use Explosion in usage tips, since I'd imagine newer readers wouldn't really get that immediately. So stuff like blocking rapid spin/defog by nuking their hazard remover after setting rocks, getting rid of threats to your team, severely weakening something to open the door for cleaning by a teammate, getting off a last ditch hit if you have to sack it.

Also rephrase the bullet punch point so it doesn't sound like it's the same as the one in Moves; "use bullet punch to pick off these threats and get some last minute chip damage"

Replace the whimsicott in the 5th point of team options with togekiss. Much more relevant example.

In oo, even though the main idea is pursuit trapping, mention that the AV set also allows it to switch into stuff like non-flamethrower and fire blast clefable better without getting worn down as quickly.

* Metagross is a fairly reliable Stealth Rock setter due to its offensive prowess and access to Explosion, so partners that take advantage of entry hazards [general rule of thumb: you only need "entry" in front of "hazards" for the first time in each section] to pressure the opposing team such as Bisharp, Keldeo, and Gengar are excellent teammates.
* Pokemon such as Conkeldurr, Gliscor, and Keldeo all make for solid partners alongside Metagross, as they greatly appreciate its prowess in trapping troublesome Pokemon like Latias, Starmie, and Celebi.
* Grass-type Pokemon such as Celebi, Decidueye, and Rotom-C, [ac] which that can combat the ever popular Ground- and Water-types that give Metagross trouble, [ac] are excellent partners as well.
* Users of Volt-Switch Volt Switch and U-turn such as Raikou and Hydreigon pair well alongside Metagross, [ac] as they provide free switches for it and take advantage of the Stealth Rock Metagross sets up.
* Metagross is an excellent check to popular Fairy-types such as Clefable and Togekiss, so Dark- and Fighting-types that appreciate these Fairies them gone such as Hydreigon, Mienshao, and Infernape make for solid teammates. These Pokemon do an excellent job at checking the opposing Dark-types that give Metagross trouble as well.
* Hydreigon, [ac] in particular, [ac] works excellently alongside Metagross, as it can easily handle the Dark-, [add space] Water-, Ground-, and Fire-types that plague Metagross, while Metagross checks the Fairy-types that cause problems for Hydreigon.
* Furthermore, Pokemon such as Mega-Aerodactyl [remove hyphen] and Entei, [ac] which whom also struggle to break through bulky Ground- and Water-types, [ac] work well with Metagross, [ac] as it can severely damage these foes with Explosion, clearing the way for a teammate to wreak havoc.

Moves
========

* Meteor Mash is Metagross's strongest STAB move and hits incredibly hard in conjunction with the Choice Band.
* Zen Headbutt provides solid neutral coverage alongside Meteor Mash and is a reliable secondary STAB move that nails Fighting-types such as Keldeo, Infernape, and Chestnaught Chesnaught for super-effective [remove hyphen] damage.
* Earthquake is necessary for hitting opposing Steel- and Fire-types such as Bisharp, Coballion Cobalion, and Entei for super-effective [remove hyphen] damage.
* Trick is awesome for Metagross as it effectively cripples bulky Water-types such as Suicune, Slowbro, and Alomomola for the rest of the battle.
* Pursuit is also an option for this moveslot, being capable of effectively trapping and removing threatening Pokemon such as Latias and offensive variants of Mew. However, locking Metagross into Pursuit is often unoptimal, [rc] suboptimal however [ending the point with "however" tends to make it sound weird].
* When factoring in the boost from the Choice Band, Bullet Punch becomes a very strong priority move for picking off faster offensive threats such as Togekiss and Terrakion. While true That said [fits better], being Choice locked into Bullet Punch is not ideal outside of revenge killing and often leaves Metagross susceptible as set up setup bait for Pokémon Pokemon such as Scizor and Bisharp.
* Lastly, Explosion is an alternative option, [ac] which serves as an absolute nuke, but is less reliable than Trick and results in Metagross fainting as well.

Set Details
========

* Maximuim Maximum Attack and Speed investment with an Adamant nature allows [focus is on investment, which is singular] Metagross to hit as hard and fast as possible.
* A Jolly nature can also be used in order to outspeed Timid Primarina and at least Speed tie opposing Bisharp.
* Choice Band is the selected item, [ac] as it maximizes Metagrosses' Metagross's power and wall breaking wallbreaking potential.
* Clear Body is useful for blocking Intimidate from Krookodile, negating the Speed drop from Sticky Webs, and preventing Special Defense drops from moves such as Psychic and Shadow Ball.

Usage Tips
========

* Choice Band Metagross plays differently from its other sets, requiring more prediction, [ac] as it is Choice locked into one move unless it Tricks gives away it's its Choice Band with Trick [we try to avoid using moves as verbs].
* Beware of mindlessly using Earthquake, as their are there is a myriad of Pokemon with Levitate and Flying-type Pokémon that are immune to the move Ground and will put the Metagross user in a vulnerable position.
* Use Trick only when Metagross's Choice Band is no longer needed, typically targeting a bulky Water-type that gives Metagross trouble such as Slowbro or Suicune.
* Choice Band Metagross should be used as a wall breaker wallbreaker to rip apart and disrupt bulky cores for teammates to later clean through the opponent's weakened team.

Team Options
========

* Metagross is a terrific early- or mid-game wall breaker wallbreaker, and as such, late-game [add hyphen] cleaners such as Choice Scarf Keldeo, Mega-Aerodactyl [remove hyphen], and Mega-Sharpedo [remove hyphen] make for great teammates.
* Choice Band Metagross is usually able to break through or cripple bulky Water- and Ground-types with Trick or repeated powerful STAB attacks, so Pokémon Pokemon such as Bisharp, Mienshao, and Entei that appreciate these Pokémon them being removed are excellent partners alongside Metagross.
* The likes of Keldeo, Lucario, and Infernape all appreciate Metagross's ability to trap and remove Pokemon such as Latias and Starmie, [rc] and as such, make for excellent partners.
* Stealth Rock and Spikes support from Pokémon Pokemon such as Forretress, Klefki, and Froslass benefits [same idea as the investment comment; it'd be plural if it were "Stealth Rock support and Spikes support"] Metagross greatly, [ac] as they it helps Metagross in breaking down bulkier Pokémon Pokemon quickly.
* Magneton, Hydreigon, and other users of Volt Switch and U-turn are great to partner with Metagross, [ac] as they generate momentum and give Metagross free switch ins to break through the opposing team.
* Magneton, despite sharing many weaknesses with Metagross, is a particularly potent partner, [ac] as it can trap Steel-types such as Coballion Cobalion, Scizor, and Empoleon, [ac] which who give Metagross problems.

Other Options
=============

* An Assault Vest set utilizing Pursuit is sound in theory, [ac] as due to its typing and increased Special Defense, [ac] Metagross more easily switches into and traps Psychic-types such as Latias, Celebi, and offensive Mew, as well as more easily switches into Fairy-types without getting worn down quickly. However, using Assault Vest makes Metagross far weaker than Choice Band sets and struggles to combat Ground- and Dark-types more so than Shuca and Colbur Berry variants do.
* A mixed attacking set utilizing Hidden Power Fire and Grass Knot is able allows Metagross to lure in [the hook doesn't lure fish, bait does; the set doesn't lure those Pokemon, Metagross does] and KO or severely weaken [just luring isn't enough, since even without this set, Metagross would still lure these Pokemon in; it's about what happens afterwards] Steel-, Water-, and Ground-types such as Scizor, Swampert, and Hippodown, [ac] which otherwise check Metagross with ease.
* A set consisting of Agility / Meteor Mash / Thunder Punch / Ice punch holding a Steelium Z-Crystal can serve as a solid late-game cleaner versus against more offensively inclined teams,; [comma->semicolon] however, [ac] it is slightly more less unreliable than other variants of Metagross.


Checks and Counters
===================

**Bulky Water-types**: Bulky Water-types such as Slowbro, Swampert, and Suicune resist Metagross's Steel-type STAB moves and take little damage from Zen Headbutt. In return addition ["in return" gives a positive connotation of repaying kindness], they can burn Metagross with Scald or even use it as set up setup fodder. However, [ac] these Pokemon must beware of Trick, Explosion, or and the rare Grass Knot however.

**Bulky Ground-types**: Bulky Ground-types such as Hippodown, [rc] and Gastrodon, [rc] and Krookodile [qc note: missed this, but removed Krookodile as an example here, since it doesn't really qualify as a bulky Ground-type] threaten Metagross with super-effective [remove hyphen] Ground-type STAB moves and take little damage from Metagross's its attacks due to their impressive defensive stats. These Pokemon have to watch out for Grass Knot, though.

**Dark-types**: [remove extra space] Dark-types such as Bisharp, Hydreigon, and Mega-Absol [remove hyphen] are all incredibly threatening to Metagross, [ac] as they are immune to Metagross's its Zen Headbutt and in return can do huge damage to Metagross it with a super-effective [remove hyphen] Dark-type attack. Some Dark-types such as Bisharp, Krookodile, and Mega-Absol [remove hyphen] are also capable of trapping Metagross with Pursuit.

**Powerful Offensive Threats**: Powerful offensive Pokemon such as Infernape, Coballion Cobalion, and Entei can typically beat Metagross in a 1v1 one-on-one situation due to their powerful STAB attacks and higher Speed stats, making them problematic.
