Overview
########

Just like it was last generation, Murkrow is one of the most powerful offensive Pokemon in the Little Cup tier. Its great mixed attacking stats, high Speed, and expansive movepool allow it to run physical and mixed sets. This unpredictability is one of Murkrow's prime traits; because it can run so many different sets, it's really hard to predict and counter. It has access to both damaging priority in the form of STAB Sucker Punch and supportive priority with Prankster, which further boost its damaging potential. It is held back slightly by its weakness to Stealth Rock and forced reliance on STAB attacks such as the recoil-inducing Brave Bird and unreliable Sucker Punch. However, these drawbacks are relatively minor compared to everything else the bird can do. Its Speed, power, and flexibility ensure it a spot on almost any team.

Mixed Attacker
########
name: Life Orb Attacker
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Sucker Punch
move 3: Heat Wave
move 4: Hidden Power Grass / Dark Pulse / Defog
ability: Insomnia
item: Life Orb / Berry Juice
evs: 240 Atk / 80 SpA / 188 Spe
nature: Naive

Moves
========

Brave Bird is Murkrow's main STAB attack, and is ridiculously powerful coming off of its high Attack stat and the Life Orb boost. Sucker Punch is an incredibly strong priority move that hits potential revenge killers. Heat Wave hits the Steel-types such as Pawniard or Magnemite that would otherwise wall Murkrow. The last slot is for type coverage. Hidden Power Grass hits Tirtouga and other Rock-types for decent damage, whereas Dark Pulse can be used to reliably nail Slowpoke and Misdreavus without having to rely on the prediction-based Sucker Punch. Defog can be used in the last slot so that Murkrow can support its team, and doesn't clash with Insomnia as it's illegal with Prankster. Roost can also be used in the last slot if coverage isn't needed and healing is more important to cover for Life Orb and Brave Bird recoil. Hidden Power Ground can also be used to hit Rock-types, but Dark Pulse should hit most of them hard enough.

Set Details
========

Life Orb allows Murkrow to do as much damage as possible without forcing it into one attack. A Naive nature and 188 Speed EVs allow Murkrow to hit the important 19 Speed benchmark, thus being able to Speed tie with most Misdreavus. 240 Attack EVs maximize the damage done with Murkrow's two STAB moves. The last 80 EVs are thrown into Special Attack to give Heat Wave, Hidden Power Grass, and Dark Pulse more power. Insomnia is preferred over Prankster because none of Murkrow's attacks bar Roost receive the Prankster boost, and Prankster is illegal with Defog. Insomnia allows Murkrow to absorb Sleep Powder and other sleep-inducing moves. As a result, Murkrow can put sun teams and their Chlorophyll sweepers in a checkmate position, as they are forced to attack and are therefore susceptible to a strong Life Orb-boosted Sucker Punch. It also makes Murkrow a great switch-in to Foongus, but this can be risky because of Stun Spore. Berry Juice is a great replacement for Life Orb if you want to try and bluff non-mixed Murkrow and would like to run four attacks but still have a way of recovering some health.

Usage Tips
========

The safest way to bring Murkrow in is through Volt Switch and U-turn, a switch on a Ground-type attack, or a switch on a weak or resisted attack. Murkrow is kind of frail, so care must be taken when switching it in. Once it's in safely, Murkrow should fire off its powerful Brave Birds in order to deal the most amount of damage possible. Use Sucker Punch when the opposing Pokemon is faster, to bypass opposing priority attacks, and to finish off weakened opponents. Try to use Heat Wave and Hidden Power Grass sparingly, as they not only help to sweep, but can be used to lure and KO certain Pokemon if the illusion that Murkrow doesn't have them can be kept up.

Team Options
========

Pokemon that can take advantage of the removal of Pokemon such as Pawniard and Magnemite enjoy the support of Murkrow's offensive capabilities. Offensive Pokemon that share the same type as Murkrow might also find an easier time sweeping due the holes it can punch in a team. Faster cleaners like to take advantage of the damage done by Life Orb Murkrow, and can help clean up after it sweeps. Pokemon with Volt Switch and U-turn such as Chinchou and Mienfoo can help Murkrow switch in a lot easier. Pokemon that can easily switch in on or take care of bulky Water-types such as Chinchou, Slowpoke, and Tirtouga can help clear away walls for Murkrow and allow it to sweep. Grass-types such as Ferroseed, Lileep, and Foongus come in handy for this. Counters for Rock-types such as Amaura or Archen are appreciated as well. These include Fighting-types, bulky Water-types, and Grass-types. Pokemon that can remove entry hazards with Defog or Rapid Spin are great partners too because they can get rid of Stealth Rock. Similarly, entry hazard setters such as Ferroseed and Dwebble help whittle down the opponent's Pokemon and break Focus Sashes and Sturdy, making it easier for Murkrow to sweep uninterrupted.

Substitute Attacker
########
name: Substitute Attacker
move 1: Substitute
move 2: Brave Bird
move 3: Sucker Punch
move 4: Roost / Heat Wave / Thunder Wave
ability: Prankster
item: Eviolite / Berry Juice
evs: 36 HP / 236 Atk / 20 Def / 20 SpD / 188 Spe
nature: Jolly

Moves
========

On this set, Murkrow utilizes priority Substitute to protect itself so that it can safely unleash its powerful attacks. Substitute is a great move for Murkrow because it takes advantage of Murkrow's ability to force switches, allows for the easier use of Sucker Punch, blocks status, and is boosted by Prankster. Brave Bird is present on this set as the obligatory STAB attack. Sucker Punch is a STAB move with priority that pairs well with Substitute, forcing opposing Pokemon to attack so Murkrow can deal heavy damage. Roost helps to alleviate Substitute and Brave Bird recoil. Heat Wave can be used to give Murkrow some unpredictability, nailing Steel-types hard and making it even harder to check. If Roost is not used, it is advised to give Murkrow Berry Juice so that it can still heal itself. Thunder Wave can be used in last slot to hinder the opposing team with paralysis and allow Murkrow to impact the match long after it goes down.

Set Details
========

Eviolite is preferred here because this set takes on a marginally more defensive role, dislikes the extra Life Orb recoil, and already has recovery in the form of prankster Roost. A Jolly nature and 188 Speed EVs ensure that Murkrow is as fast as possible, because even with Prankster Substitutes and Roost, it is going to want to move first as often as possible. 236 Attack EVs are used for maximum power, and the last 36 EVs are placed in HP because it doesn't need them anywhere else. Life Orb can be used over Eviolite if bulk is not valued, recoil can be played around, and doing as much damage as possible is the goal.

Usage Tips
========

In contrast to on the Life Orb set, Substitute is the most commonly used move, not Brave Bird. This is because Murkrow forces a lot of switches, and that, coupled with Prankster and Roost, makes Substitute the number one way to mess with an opposing team. If played correctly, this set can be incredibly annoying to most teams. Even though it is carrying an Eviolite, Murkrow is no defensive behemoth, so switching in must still be done with caution. Don't expect it to tank too many super effective attacks. Remember, Prankster is a valuable tool for grabbing momentum, so don't be afraid to use Substitute or Roost against Pokemon such as Chinchou or Magnemite that might get too cocky with Volt Switch. However, do so with caution.

Team Options
========

A Rapid Spin or Defog user is really useful for getting rid of Stealth Rock, which can severely limit Murkrow's longevity. Pokemon that can help take on potential Murkrow checks such as Pawniard, Magnemite, and bulky Water-types are also great partners. A Magnemite of your own can help get rid of opposing Steel-types that wall this set. SubRoost Murkrow is very good at stalling, so weather from Snover and even Toxic Spikes from the likes of Tentacool, which can use Rapid Spin to support Murkrow as well, can come in handy. Just like with the Life Orb set, offensive partners such as Grass-types or Ground-types to get rid of Electric- or Rock-types are really useful. Because of this, Chinchou and Staryu make great partners.

Other Options
########

Murkrow has many other options it can potentially utilize. Hidden Power Ice or Icy Wind can be used as coverage on both sets to hit Archen and Tyrunt. Thief can be used to steal an opponent's item. Pursuit can be used to trap Psychic- and Ghost-types that need to be removed. A Calm Mind set utilizing Murkrow's expansive special movepool is a very viable set. A critical hit-abusing set utilizing Scope Lens and Murkrow's other ability, Super Luck, can be used to dish out powerful attacks without Life Orb recoil. Prankster support is also an option. A bulky Haze set can be used to stop setup sweepers, and Prankster Taunt, Toxic, Perish Trap, and Tailwind all allow Murkrow to support its team. A Choice Scarf can be used for more Speed and even better revenge killing capabilities. With help from Prankster, Murkrow can also run an incredibly annoying Thunder Wave + Confuse Ray set, but it is rather unreliable and Murkrow is usually better off doing other things. Finally, Murkrow can run two attacks on a Thunder Wave set and cripple an opposing team with priority paralysis.

Checks & Counters
########
**Rock-types**: Rock-types beat Murkrow, as they resist its Flying-type STAB moves and can use their natural bulk to sponge its coverage attacks. Archen, Amaura, Tirtouga, Dwebble, and Shieldon all work well in this regard. They can also set Stealth Rock, which really cuts down on Murkrow's longevity.

**Steel-types**: Pawniard checks Murkrow sets lacking Heat Wave and can Knock Off its item. Magnemite switches into Brave Bird easily and threatens Murkrow with Thunderbolt, but must watch out for Hidden Power Ground and Heat Wave.

**Bulky Physical Walls**: Pokemon with high Defense stats such as Lileep, Porygon, and Hippopotas can check Murkrow, but some are 2HKOed by Life Orb-boosted Brave Bird.

**Bulky Water-types**: Chinchou, Shellder, and Tirtouga can take the majority of Murkrow's STAB attacks and coverage moves and respond with respective super effective moves. Shellder and Tirtouga can set up on Murkrow while it fails to hurt them with Sucker Punch and then outspeed it and take it down.

**Fairy-types**: Fairy-types such as Spritzee can take a Brave Bird and retaliate with super effective Fairy-type attacks.

**Choice Scarf Pokemon**: Faster Pokemon that resist Sucker Punch are really annoying for Murkrow to face. Most of these are Choice Scarf Pokemon, as Murkrow naturally outspeeds or Speed ties with almost every common Pokemon in the metagame. Notable Choice Scarf Pokemon are Pawniard and Mienfoo.

Calm Mind
########
name: Calm Mind
move 1: Calm Mind
move 2: Dark Pulse
move 3: Roost
move 4: Substitute / Taunt / Feather Dance
ability: Prankster
item: Eviolite
evs: 196 HP / 20 Def / 76 SpA / 20 SpD / 188 Spe
nature: Timid

Moves
========
- Calm Mind is actually a pretty great move on Murkrow, boosting it’s already decent SpA even further and allowing it to tank / set up on weaker special attacks.
- Due to the Steel nerf, Dark STAB is actually a very good STAB to have, and Dark Pulse is the best option Murkrow has on a mono-attacking set like this, and if Murkrow can accrue a couple CM’s, it can be become very powerful even against resists.
- Roost makes Murkrow’s job of setting up CM’s a whole lot easier, especially with prankster allowing it priority so Krow can heal in front of faster mons and take away rock, ice, and electric weaknesses.
- The last slot is definitely up to preference, but the best option seems to be Substitute as it eases prediction, blocks status, and works well alongside cm.
- Taunt can be used > Sub if you want to stop status and prevent other pokemon setting up on you.
- Feather Dance allows you to take on physical attackers much easier as you boost on the special side, but users must be wary of Pawniard (most notably) and Hyper Cutter Gligar

Set Details
========
- First priority here, as it usually is with Murkrow, is speed. 19 speed is an ultra important speed tie, and with CM / Dark Pulse combined with it makes taking on Gligar / Missy a lot easier, so Timid + 188 Spe is recommended.
- Next, as this is supposed to be able to set up on shit, 196 HP EV’s to capitalize on some bulk.
- 76 SpA EV’s boost Murkrow’s SpA to 16, more than enough to do some damage alongside CM.
- 20 extra EV’s are thrown into Def, and 20 into SpD to give Krow a little more added bulk.
- Prankster again is superior because priority CM, Roost, and Sub are all amazing assets to be able to make use of.

Usage Tips
========
- Be careful on what you switch in on, as not only is Murkrow still not the bulkiest mon around, but stray status could really hurt Krow’s chances of setting up can actually being useful.
- Because this is a mono-attacking set, don’t assume to bring this out early or even mid-game too often because it’s going to need things such as Pawniard and Fairies weakened in order to sweep properly.
- CM Murkrow is best brought in to set up on things such as Abra, Bronzor, and most Grass-type pokemon. It can beat Misdreavus as well, but one must be wary of Dazzling Gleam.
- Even though your only attack is Dark-type, you can easily scare away Fighters with threat of Brave Bird and get a free Sub or CM up.
- Due to the more stally nature of this set, and possibly even more so than Sub Physical, Toxic Spikes can really come in handy for beating / stalling out certain pokemon.

Team Options
=========
- Rapid Spinner / Defogger
- Gligar works especially well for being able to Defog, possibly set up SR, and take on Fighting-types and Pawniard, who resist Dark Pulse.
- As mentioned, Toxic Spikes can come in handy, and Tentacool can both TS and Spin.
- Thunder Wave / Stun Spore support from the likes of Slowpoke or Foongus works well with Dark Pulse’s flinch chance and helping to slow down scarfers.
- If played right, CM Krow honestly doesn’t too much support though, just a solid team surrounding it.

Choice Scarf
########
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Drill Peck
move 3: Heat Wave
move 4: Dark Pulse / Hidden Power Ice / Pursuit
ability: Insomnia
item: Choice Scarf
evs: 236 Atk / 76 SpA / 188 Spe
nature: Naive

Moves
========
- Brave Bird is still very strong without Life Orb, and Scarf lets Krow fire them off while outspeeding most of the tier.
- Drill Peck provides a solid STAB for when low on health, because you’ll need it when your best STAB has recoil, you have no recovery, and you’re SR weak.
- Heat Wave hits steels who want to wall your Flying moves.
- The last slot is up for grabs, and again depends on what you want to accomplish with Scarf Krow.
- Dark Pulse gives Krow another solid STAB to work with, and off the special side as well.
- With scarf, you’re guaranteed to outrun unboosted Gligar, so HP Ice can come in handy to bully it.
- Pursuit helps you trap shit like Abra or Misdreavus I guess.

Set Details
========
- Pretty much a standard scarf revenger set, meant to use strong STABs and high speed to revenge threats.
- Idk if I’ve mentioned that 19 speed is really good, so it also means you’re going to be outspeeding the majority of other scarfers as well which is cool.
- Notice the lack of Sucker Punch, which while SOMETIMES could come in use, it’s better to not use it because you already outspeed so much and choice locked Sucker Punch just begs to be set up on.
- Insomnia > Prankster, all attacks; prevents sleep.

Usage Tips
========
- Use pretty much whenever you want to try and soften up a team with BB or revenge a threat that needs to be taken out.
- Choose wisely between BB and Drill Peck; plan out if it’s better to conserve HP or go for the most damage possible.
- As with all choice sets, use good prediction.

Team Options
=========
- Um Defog / Rapid Spin support?
- Possibly hazard / spike support to make cleaning with Drill Peck a thing. (Defog sucks though)
- Can’t think of much else, doesn’t need much support as it’s not meant to sweep or set up on anything.

Things to pick up from last thread:

Scope Lens + Super Luck Murkrow:

I've heard a lot of good things about this set, so I think it'll be a good idea to write it up. I'm thinking of something like:

Murkrow @ Scope Lens
Super Luck
236 Atk / 76 SpA / 188 Spe
Naive
-Brave Bird
-Sucker Punch
-Heat Wave
-Hidden Power Grass / Roost

What do you guys think? I put in Roost because you can afford to heal yourself to stick around for a bit longer.

Also, I don't want to encourage swaggerplay or any of that sort of shit. Sure it might be viable but it's so darn uncompetitive that I won't write it unless otherwise specifically told to. That is going in OO.

I definitely think that Icy Wind deserves at least a mention, as it is nearly as strong as HP Ice, along with the ability to slow down opponents for either its teammates so they can outspeed, or itself so it may win the speed tie.

76 SpA Life Orb Murkrow Icy Wind vs. 156 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Gligar: 21-26 (84 - 104%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO (after Stealth Rock)
76 SpA Life Orb Murkrow Hidden Power Ice vs. 156 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Gligar: 26-31 (104 - 124%) -- guaranteed OHKO

also apparently prankster haze murkrow is cool???

HP Ice actually manages a 2hko on defensive Archen. It might be OO material.

Non-LO Icy Wind doesn't usually 2HKO defensive Archen after Stealth Rock, I don't think, whereas non-LO Hidden Power Ice always 2HKOs defensive Archen after Stealth Rock.
84 SpA Murkrow Hidden Power Ice vs. 236 HP / 76 SpD Eviolite Archen: 10-12 (40 - 48%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
84 SpA Murkrow Icy Wind vs. 236 HP / 76 SpD Eviolite Archen: 8-10 (32 - 40%) -- 17.6% chance to 3HKO

If Murkrow holds a Life Orb, it's the difference between a very small chance to 2HKO without Stealth Rock and a guaranteed 2HKO without Stealth Rock.
84 SpA Life Orb Murkrow Icy Wind vs. 236 HP / 76 SpD Eviolite Archen: 10-13 (40 - 52%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO
84 SpA Life Orb Murkrow Hidden Power Ice vs. 236 HP / 76 SpD Eviolite Archen: 13-16 (52 - 64%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

I guess the boost in accuracy is also sort of an advantage.

luckrow AKA scope lens murkrow appreciates dark pulse instead of HP grass, by the way, as it 2HKOes archen with a crit and OHKOes slowpoke with a crit too

To be honest, on the first set, I don't think Roost deserves a slash. It just doesn't have time to Roost, and is better off smashing stuff. I think Dark Pulse deserves the slash due to Slowpoke's popularity as a Murkrow check right now (can tank 2 BBs and paralyze it)

also, perish song+meanlook in OO

tbh

Mixed Attacker
=======
Slash berry Juice with life orb. that set is very real cause it doesnt die nearly as quickly.
take out roost slash and put in Icy Wind. yes HP ice helps it beat archen and is guaranteed one shot on gligar. but assuming you predicted well icy wind + brave bird like guarantees kills on stuff like staryu, that would otherwise speed tie.
Slash Dark Pulse with Heat wave. things hit by heat wave: pawniard (yes common but can be beaten through other ways), Magnemite (brave bird + sucker punch does a number on it and dark pulse is still neutral), tesshiido (brave bird 2hkos with some prior damage, and dark pulse is neutral). basically it gives you a realiable stab that does kill yourself

subroost
=======
um maybe mention berry juice as an item. you cant particularly take hits anyway and berry juice makes roost less necessary.
also dcae has been using a very specific sub set that he might be willing to share cause its better than subroost imo and does a lot more. it uses Twave but i cant remember what else it did so yeah.

calm mind
=======
honestly i dont even want this to be a set because of how bad it would be in a meta with pawniard. also mono dark attacker makes it lose to fighting types which are very common, as well as fairies, such as spritzee. you cant even taunt spritzee. idk it sounds very bad. i havent tested it so if you really think it should be in then ill let other QC handle it, but id rather it go to OO

Choice Scarf
========
slash sucker punch somewhere. i dont care if youre faster than everything and it makes murkrow one of the best things on your team to allow to be knocked off. its nice to have priority for stupid stuff like carvanha without ajet because otherwise scarf loses and you cry

set order IMO:
Mixkrow, Choice Scarf, Subroost, Calm Mind

OO:
mention that scope lens crap and say how its unreliable at 50% but does actually do work
at least Icy wind here if not in the set
weathre setting (rain particularly) because of prankster and forced switches
haze probably deserves a mention in one of the sets but i dont know where it goes so ill just say here until someone says otherwise.

checks and counter:
comedy aron and bulky rock options actually are the best way to beat krow even if they arent extremely common.

DO ALL THAT AND

QC 1/3

mono dark cm set does seem a little shitty this gen

run heat wave in the last slot maybe? dark/fire is only walled by like, carvanha, houndour, deino i think.

You should put in defensive Eviolite HazeKrow in here. Max HP, and go either 14 sddef or def with Twave and Haze. It stops many set up sweepers cold in their tracks and is a safe staple in any team that I'm currently using on all of my serious teams. It's won games for me by itself countless times and is definitely one of the best sets to use right now on the same level of LO Krow and BJ Krow. Again, I'm too lazy to format shit, sorry :'3

my based af krow set is probably the most effective krow set in the meta, or arguably on par with LO mixkrow. the set is brave bird/thief or sucker punch/twave/sub with bj and max spe max atk jolly rest of evs in SpD.
it is a ridiculously good check to every sweeper, and tortures defensive pokemon and can even break throigh its own checks. thief is thr icing on the cake, as u can steal bjs from gligars for example, who try to set up, or u can take eviolites from random defensive mons. its brave bird still hits like a nuke, so all this is witjout compromising offensive exploits. it should be right after mixkrow in the analysis imo.

Ok, big changes.

CM / SCOPE LENS / HAZE / SCARF sent to OO

*all* mentions of Gligar and Swirlix removed

Future plans:
Gligar is banned, so I think LO can return to what it was last generation, namely

Brave Bird
Sucker Punch
Heat Wave
Hidden Power Grass / Ground

With Dark Pulse and Roost mentions in Set Details. Icy Wind has practically no use without Gligar around, and HP Grass / Ground is more useful to hit Tirtouga / Magnemite hard. Heat Wave is still boss af.

PS dropping prem's stamp for now (changes still made though) simply because the meta has exploded since then and there are many new changes that still need to be addressed

On the SubRoost set, would it be better to slash other moves like thunder wave or heat wave with roost and slash berry juice with eviolite, mentioning that you can forgo roost and use BJ instead. It's pretty common to do this right now as it gives murkrow a bit more unpredictability for the final moveslot. set could just be renamed to 'substitute'.

and defog in OO, but can't be used with prankster so it's kinda bad.

i'll look at this in more detail laterrr

On Mixed Attacker, I'd make the last slot "Hidden Power Grass / Dark Pulse." HPGround really isn't needed all that much, as Magnemite can't really take a Heat Wave. Dark Pulse also hits things like Archen, Tirtouga, Chinchou, etc. hard. Dark Pulse has same BP as HPGrass/Ground against Chinchou.

But HP Ground hits the things that normal resist almost everything; Shieldon and Aron. If you brought that as your only Murkrow check, gg.

At least put it in Other Options, or mention it in Set Details.

MIXED ATTACKER
EVs should be 240 Atk/ 80 SpA to compensate for HP Grass

SET DETAILS
- Last 76 EV’s are thrown in SpA to give Heat Wave / Icy Wind an extra oomph.
icy wind lol
also yeah 240/80 attacking stats ofc
insomnia also allows switch in to foongus (but risky cos stun spore/sludgebomb)

USAGE TIPS
just mention that it's really quite frail so be really careful switching in
- Try to use Heat Wave and Hidden Power Ice sparingly
hp ice lol

TEAM OPTIONS
rapid spin/defog users!
hazard users (dwebble, ferro etcccc....)
stuff that can switch into it's few checks like chinchou for chinchou, archen and amaura. staryu for archen, amaura, and other random rare rock types (e.g. shieldon)

SUBSTITUTE SET
I think TWave actually deserves a slash, but ultimately it's your call, i'm not entirely sure, and it doesn't matter too much
SET DETAILS
just explain evio vs. bj (evio for roost, bj for not roost)
alternate spread if heat wave is used

USAGE TIPS
if you are running heat wave, it's a really good lure as it's unexpected on a sub set... so keep it secret until that pawniard/mag comes along

TEAM OPTIONS
hazard users (dwebble, ferro etcccc....)
stuff that can switch into it's few checks like chinchou for chinchou, archen and amaura. staryu for archen, amaura, and other random rare rock types (e.g. shieldon) (dat c+p)

OTHER OPTIONS
taunt (prankster woop!)
thief
toxic hits random shit like pory/lileep which is fun
perish trapper?
pursuit
prankster tailwind can be used as a last ditch move to allow tite to sweep or something (i've used this it's actually legit)
move hp ice/icy wind here especially for archen/tyrunt

CHECKS AND COUNTERS
just group rock types together. Archen, amaura, tyrunt are especially good, whilst tirtouga and dwebble can set up on it thanks to sturdy, tirt as ajet for sucker. Shieldon and Aron also take little from krow's hits. put rock types top of the list cos they are the best counters.
