I wanted to make this set to bring Dragonite back to his glory. In this set, he is superior to Salamence because of his great defences, speed, priority move, and attacking prowess. As I used this set, i had no problem getting in dragon dances because of his great defences, and his speed allows him to outpace all base 130's, the fastest the metagame gets besides ninjask and a few scarfers, and ninjask is taken out by extremespeed. It also outspeeds breloom and machamps that feel they can get in and put dragonite to sleep or confuse him and destroys them with an aerial ace. Dragonite, much like electivire, has to be played to his strengths, and this is the best it gets.
dragon dance on this set is key and easy to pull off. the ev's give him the bulk to survive a dragondance, quite often with more than half dragonite's hp, and fire off attacks from his monsterous base 134 attack. as stated before, all base 130's are outsped, and jolteons coming in for the quick hp ice for the ko are delt with at ease.
dragon claw: stab, powerful, and great coverage. only steels resist it and after a dragon dance (which this set is capable of getting 2 or 3, i've gotten 6 probably 10% of the time i used this) is capable of getting lots of 1hko's or 2hko's. It isn't recommended to use outrage because you lose the control of dragonite for 2 or 3 turns, and then he is confused, and the residual damage will harm this set.
extremespeed is an amazing tool blessed to dragonite. too bad not very many people really appreciated this gift. the strongest base attack priority move that is on very few usable options, allows dragonite to function as a revenge killer also.
Last but not least, aerial ace. it's a stab move, and not many people expect it. fighting types (machamp, infernape, breloom), grass types (celebi, shaymin) and bug types that expect to get in almost freely pay dearly to the surprise factor. Many that read this guide may feel that they should pick another option than aerial ace, but trust me, let it be.
Overall, i believe this is the best set Dragonite has due to my experience with Dragonite. This set is only walled by steel types, but the steel types in OU (scizor, forretress, lucario) are hit with neutral damage by aerial ace. Just watching the dragon dances pile up, and getting these 3 attacks to do work is an awesome feeling.
team options:
3 great partners are starmie, infernape, and jirachi. All 3 of these can take rock and ice attacks like a champ. A physically mixed infernape can take care of lots of walls beforehand. Also, starmie hits well from the special attacking side, as well as getting rid of the 25% hp-sucking stealth rock. Dragonite is also capable of taking the earthquakes aimed at Jirachi and Infernape. Jirachi can also run a physically mixed set with the now-acquired draco meteor, acquiring even more wallbreaking coverage before you send out Dragonite. Jirachi could also run a support set, and hamper all the pokemon necessary for you to put your dragonite on the stage.
