Upon your match's acceptance, you receive directions to the new ASB League Normal Gym via e-mail. As it would happen, this gym resides in a small, recently constructed live theatre built in Slateport City. One way or another, you make your way to this bustling city. Crowds of people line up in the city to see the contests, the Oceanic Museum, and what seems to be a relatively new attraction: The Four Seasons Theatre. Atop it you see statues of Deerling and Castform, surrounded on the four corners by symbols representing the seasons.

You make your way through the line and into the building, thinking it is likely the Normal Gym you were told about. Inside lies a clean and stylish lobby, where people line up to get tickets for the upcoming shows, which seem to include fare typical to a live theatre. Just as you are convinced you have gotten the wrong address, a man in a red beret approaches you. "Ah, you must be the new gym challenger." he says to you. "Please, head right this way, the show's about to start."

The man leads you inside the back of the theatre where many preparations are being made for an upcoming show. Actors and actresses are putting on makeup, stagehands are hard at work preparing the stage, and the overall result is that of a huge hustle and bustle. The two of you approach another, considerably younger, gentleman wearing a fedora. He greets you and says "Oh, you here for the match? The Leader's thataway!" He points towards a door, and as if on cue, the door opens and a man comes out the door, having on an outfit of grey and orange.

He clears his throat and says "Why hello there new challenger! Are you ready for the fight to begin? No not right now, we've still got a few minutes before the curtains open. I am Maxim, the ASB Normal Gym leader, and I welcome you to my abode."

"Before we begin, let me lay down some ground rules. First off, the rules of the theatre prohibit any moves or abilities that would disable or mess with the routine operation of any held item. These items are essential to the actors' costumes, and removing them can cause problems for the show. Second, this also applies to abilities, save for Trace. We believe in making sure the Pokemons' natural abilities shine through, and messing with those can cause discomfort to these actors. Finally, if either of us decide to phase out the opposition, the opposition, not random chance, gets to decide what comes out next. This is to prevent any wild entrances from confusing the audience."

Soon after that info dump, a female voice calls out "Hey, we ready to start yet? It's almost time for the show to begin."

Maxim chuckles, then says "Well you heard the lady, it is almost time for our performance. Have fun, and do your very best in this matchup. After all, my Pokemon may be Normal typed, but they are anything but normal!"

After this, the curtains open, and before you know it, the battle has begun!

Summary:
  • All Items must be kept as Normal in the Normal gym. This means that items cannot be swapped, stolen, knocked off, restrained, destroyed, or rendered unable to be used in any way. Consumable Items will still be consumed after the normal number of uses. Fling still works as normal.
  • All Abilities must be kept as Normal in the Normal gym. This means that abilities cannot be swapped, copied, disabled, or rendered unable to be used at any time. The sole exception to this is Trace, which works as normal because it is a natural part of the ability itself.
  • If a Pokemon is forced out by a Switch-Forcing Move or a Red Card, that Pokemon's trainer can choose which Pokemon goes in next.
Codifications:

  • Camouflage turns the Pokemon into a Normal Type.
  • Secret Power has a 30% chance to Flinch.
  • Nature Power summons Tri Attack.

Welcome, one and all, to the fabulous Four Seasons Theatre! It is in this location that a grudge match of sorts is set to occur, as the challenger hopes to redeem himself after his quick loss by disqualification during his previous attempt to obtain a badge. However, the leader definitely won't make this an easy task.

I appear to have been reduced to simply stating the obvious, which makes means that it is now time to introduce the teams! First, we have the Leader, Maxim. Known both for his strong love of Normal-types and his equally ardent hatred for Sableye, he brings a powerful squad of Pokemon, most of which (sorry, Wigglytuff '^') are capable of dealing heavy damage regardless of type effectiveness. I'd tentatively place importance on Braviary, as it belongs to the objectively best type throughout the 20 years of the existence of the series has super-effective STAB against two of Fort's Pokemon and (unless I've miscalculated) can outdamage a third member.

Next is the challenger, Fort Colorcastle, who has returned to claim the...whatever-Maxim-calls-it Badge. His strategy appears to be, "bring enough Mega Evolutions that I'll be prepared when . I'd pay attention to Hariyama, here; behind its cheesily edgy facade, it conceals devastating Fighting-type STAB attacks that strike for super-effective damage against 4/7 of Maxim's team.

Type:
psychic.gif
STAB: can lift and throw opponents with Psychic regardless of Special Attack Rank. Psychic-type attacks are not godlike and cannot be used as a catchall for Disabling, Binding, and redirecting opposing attacks.
Abilities:
Synchronize: (Passive) Pokemon with this ability mentally link their condition to an opposing Pokemon and when inflicted by the major status ailments Burn, Poison, or Paralysis, will share their status condition with the opponent. Pokemon will not be inflicted by status conditions to which they are immune by virtue of typing, ability, etc.
Inner Focus: (Passive) When an opponent attempts to flinch this Pokemon, it stands firm and continues its attack. If it has another ability that would be activated by flinching, that ability activates.
Magic Guard: (Passive) This Pokemon is infused with a powerful psycho-electric energy that makes it immune to damage from Spikes, Stealth Rock, Hail, Sandstorm, Leech Seed, Poisoning, Burn, and Partial Trapping moves. It can still attack itself in confusion, and will still take damage from it. Additionally, the energy protects the Pokemon from its own reckless recoil attacks. Toxic still increases in damage each round, although if Magic Guard is in effect the Pokemon will not suffer any damage. Life Orb recoil is negated. UNLOCKED
Trace
: (MEGA) When entering into battle, this Pokemon can copy an ability on one of its opponents for 6 EN. This effect only triggers if the ability to be copied is specified when the Pokemon is sent out. When facing a pokemon with Trace, the Player sending out last must send out the pokemon without orders, in order to give the opponent the opportunity to trigger trace and any orders eventually given will be ignored until given the 5:1 opportunity for trace to be triggered. The ability remains on the Pokemon for six (6) actions. Wonder Guard cannot be Traced.
Command: Activate Trace (target ability) - 5 En - Replace Trace with the target Ability for six (6) actions. When the copied ability fades, the user regains Trace.

Fort Colorcastle makes the opening move by tossing a Pokeball into the battlefield and sending out his Steelix. As the mighty serpent rearranges its sizable form to better fit the confines of the arena, it emits a tinny creaking sound in anticipation. Maxim responds with his own Pokemon-holding device, which bursts open to reveal his Lopunny, who is immediately enveloped in the tell-tale chrysalis that indicates Mega Evolution; it emerges briefly in its augmented state, ready for battle.

Quick as a flash, Lopunny dashes toward Steelix. It dances around the snake's shield of tail slaps and, pinpointing Steelix's center of gravity, delivers a swift and powerful sweep of its leg, resulting in the uplifted segments of Steelix crashing to the ground. Once Steelix rights itself, though, Lopunny is sent flying from a crushing impact from Steelix's hard, metallic body, aided in strength by several quick rotations. In fact, the power of the technique is such that Steelix momentarily assumes the lead position in a damage-dealing competition--that is, until its held item, a Life Orb, produces the recognizable red flash that accompanies its offensive effect, signalling a drop in its holder's vitality.

Lopunny briefly recuperates from its new position at the far side of the arena, then once more advances toward its foe. However, it is forced to initiate evasive maneuvers when Steelix, sweeping its tail in a low arc, tears up the floorboards of the stage to expose loose dirt and rocks below, which it then flings toward the leporine brawler. Fort probably won't be pleased when he receives the bill for the damages caused to the building, but this will be mitigated by the immediate effect set into play: the scattered, stony debris inexplicably begins ooze toward maxim's side of the field, eventually halting at the perimeter.

With its focus on executing its last order, Steelix is surprised when it cannot locate its foe after Lopunny's dodging movement; this is not a lasting feeling, though, as Lopunny soon reveals its location by blindsiding Steelix with a powerful, leaping kick to its back, sending the target to the ground. In a fashion that would satisfy any player of traditional fighting games, Lopunny then hops about, waiting for its foe to reassume a fighting posture so that it may strike again and maintain its advantage. As Steelix lifts its form, Lopunny sees its chance and swings its leg in attempt to knock prone its rival.

In the heat of the moment, though, Lopunny forgets the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of its choice of action, as Steelix lack legs entirely, and to further compound the, this strike was not as well-calculated as its first. With biology as well as haste working against it, the only effect accomplished by the leader's Pokemon is a chunk of damage being dealt. Steelix then engages in its own attack by ensnaring its attacker's outstretched limb with its tail, then spinning violently and rapidly, repeatedly smashing Lopunny into the arena floor.

I think this is gonna be one of those matches where I look back and wonder "What was I thinking?"

EDIT: Also Lopunny should have 52 hp by my calculations, not 42.

No Counterswitch

mega evolve
arm thrust ~ brick break ~ arm thrust
IF bounce, THEN smack down.
IF endure, THEN protect the previous action, arm thrust when endure is used, AND protect next action.
IF you are not to use protect, AND lopunny is to use dig not in combination, THEN earthquake.

Seeing the chance to place himself in a better match-up, the challenger withdraws his Pokemon and replaces it with the fearsome Heracles beetle, Heracross, who promptly Mega Evolves. Despite the imminent and disastrous threat looming before him, Maxim declines the opportunity to counter-switch, feeling confident in his tricks. Will this choice prove wise? Let us find out.

Hoping to sustain his Pokemon for as long as possible, the leader orders his Lopunny to attack, and that it does, cloaking its fist in a mystical, red aura that changes to a vibrant green once the blow connects. Lopunny seems to have been invigorated from this maneuver, but Heracross wastes no time in stymieing that feeling; moving in with arms outstretched, Heracross lands five consecutive strikes with its forelimbs, inflicting severe damage to its victim. Lopunny, sensing the disparity between the attacks of its opponent and it, tactically retreats to reassess the best course of action.

Combat continues as Lopunny speeds toward Heracross and claps together its paws on the face of the insect. Heracross is taken aback by this surprise attack, leaving it open for an amount of time that is long enough for Lopunny to follow up with a second attack. Channeling its ki into its fist, Lopunny harnesses the fiery emotions of battle to ignite its limb and perform a burning uppercut that cleanly hits Heracross, causing the Bug-type to stagger backwards a few paces.

Unfortunately for the leader and his Pokemon, Heracross is able to recover from this momentary distraction, and, assuming the position it held before Lopunny's last action, pummels the rabbit into submission with a flurry of strikes. I sincerely hope that the three hours of sleep I received last night have dulled my senses enough that I miscalculated or overlooked some factor, as, otherwise, Maxim threw away, by 2 HP, a Pokemon that could have seen further use down the line. Lopunny was also one of Maxim's better options to use against Fort's (admittedly weakened) Steelix, so we'll see how that plays out as well.

Taking a Pokeball in one hand and a small, velvet pouch in the other, the leader sends his next Pokemon into the fray. As the coruscating light from his Pokeball fades, a Ditto is seen on the field, and it immediately begins to twist and distort its form; within seconds, the challenger's Heracross is staring down its exact double. Maxim then opens the mouth of the fabric vessel and tosses a handful of silver powder over Ditto, whose body quickly accumulates enough of the dusty substance to completely coat itself; once in contact with the Pokemon, the material shifts to a clear, shiny hue. However, the newcomer has drawn the attention of the hazardous terrain, and several jagged stones fly unerringly toward Ditto, pelting the Pokemon for entering the arena.

With orders from its trainer, Heracross strides toward its doppelgänger and slashes at it with its long horn, but Ditto manages to react quickly enough to parry the strike and launch a counter-attack, knocking Heracross off balance. However, Heracross regains its footing and, soon enough, the two are locked in close combat, exchanging jabs, thrusts, and swipes of their horns in an effort to launch each other out of the battlefield, but, due to its earlier exertion, Heracross quickly falls behind, unable to match Ditto's weighty damage. After a particularly heavy blow from Ditto sends Heracross reeling to the edge of the stage, it would appear that the leader has mounted a small comeback.

This assumption proves to be false, however; as Ditto approaches the weary beetle, Heracross receives a second wind of sorts, and, twisting its body, lunges toward the oncoming mimic. When it reaches its destination, Heracross jams its horns around Ditto's midsection, lifts the struggling Normal-type high above Heracross's head, and then brutally flings its clone into the floorboards. When the conflict comes to a halt, Ditto's natural form can be seen lying unconscious in a crater of broken wood and debris.

Maxim orders his Exploud into battle, who weathers the barrage of rocks that greets it and promptly knocks out its exhausted enemy with a simple swat. There isn't much to say here; the round has been simple enough that the only notable part is how the battlers will react to the next round.

Hmm? you want me to explain the situation in a more cinematic fashion? Fine; here we go.

As the leader watches his Ditto fall in battle to Fort's Heracross, a latent desire awakens within him—he must win, no matter the cost! Embracing this new devotion to the concept of victory, Maxim flings a Pokeball onto the stage, spawning his Exploud, Shriek, who locks eyes with Heracross before living up to its name by releasing a ferocious, clangorous bellow. When Steelix's trap activates, the leader's Pokemon manages to dodge a few projectiles, but some still find their mark, leaving Expolud slightly worse for wear.

Once the above occurrence ends, though, Maxim shouts a command to Exploud, triggering a movement in the creature. Exploud begins to charge toward its foe, emitting a shrill whine as it advances, but halts its movement within a few feet of Heracross. The worn out insect attempts to defend itself, but Heracross's exhausted is such that its planned attack takes the form of a meager, non-threatening swipe that whiffs entirely. Exploud has no such limitation or inhibition, though, and harnesses its full might to deliver an awesome blow that propels Heracross through a fake wall that helped to compose the background of the scene; when examined, Heracross is found to be in no condition to continue fighting, and is recalled to its Pokeball by the challenger.

Following a brightly shining light, Steelix makes a reappearance, looming ominously over the leader's Exploud. Despite the and inhales deeply before spewing a stream of flickering, orange flames that dance across Steelix's steely hide, singing the snake. However, Steelix's reaction is oddly subdued; despite the scorching fire that thoroughly bathed its form, the Steel-type hasn't broken form since it hit the field, almost as if it were conserving its strength, biding its time until the perfect moment.

Seizing the perceived advantage, Maxim orders Exploud to further pressure its foe, and the Normal-type happily obliges. Lowering itself to all fours and arching its back, Exploud shrieks harshly as a large wave somehow appears within the confines of the stage and crashes into Steelix, although the effects of the attack are slightly mitigated by clever coiling on the part of the target. Once the remaining water drains from the arena, though, the challenger breaks his silence and shouts a set of commands to his Pokemon.

Steelix's segments begin to rotate forcefully, its jaw gapes, and its entire length starts to rattle unnervingly. It is only with the advent of a threatening, orange light that streams from the serpent's eyes and maw that the leader realizes the full extent of Fort's plans. Maxim nervously yells to the audience, informing them of an "unforeseen problem that necessitates an intermission" and demanding that they evacuate the theatre until the issue is resolved. After the door to the lobby closes behind the last exiting spectator, a massive tremor and a deafening "bang" shake the building as Steelix releases its stockpile of stored energy in a devastating explosion. The force of the attack renders Steelix unconscious, and it also leaves behind a wake of carnage; toppled chairs, tattered curtains, and fragments of annihilated props and scenery litter the stage, and Expolud can be seen struggling to its feet in the far corner of the battlefield. Thankfully, the dedicated, gym-committee-appointed restoration crew magic of theatre should be able to fix this situation by the beginning of the next round, but, for now, it would be wise to avoid the arena.
