Draft Ogerpon-W

Status
Not open for further replies.
[overview]
**Draft order**: Middle of round 2 onwards

**Price range**: 16-17 points

**Overview**: Ogerpon-W functions as a strong wallbreaker and sweeper with a good typing and solid Attack stat, which is further boosted by the Wellspring Mask. It also has a good Speed tier that can be amplified with Trailblaze. Ogerpon-W's offensive capabilities are bolstered with Swords Dance and Tera-boosted Ivy Cudgel that can OHKO or deal heavy damage to many defensive walls. It also has solid support options, such as Encore, Knock Off, and U-turn, so it isn't limited to being a one-dimensional breaker.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Setup Sweeper**:
Ogerpon-W excels at setting up Swords Dance and putting immediate pressure on the opposing team. It has other coverage options like Knock Off, Play Rough, and Superpower to break past its checks. In addition, the Special Defense boost from Embody Aspect can come in handy to survive a special hit from a faster pokemon that would ordinarily revenge kill Ogerpon-W.
**Trailblaze cleaner**:
In certain matchups where Ogerpon-W is not expected to sweep, it can function as a potential late-game cleaner after using Trailblaze and using Tera-boosted Ivy Cudgel to blow past the rest of the opposing team.
**Entry hazard stack**:
This is the least preferable set for Ogerpon-W to use; however, it fulfills a niche supporting role of setting up Spikes to pressure the opposing team, and assist team members. Ogerpon-W can use Synthesis for longevity, which grants more opportunities to get hazards up.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Ivy Cudgel, Power Whip, Horn Leech, Trailblaze, Wood Hammer
**Setup moves**: Swords Dance
**Utility moves**: Taunt, Encore, Substitute, Spikes
**Coverage**: Superpower, Low Kick, Play Rough, Knock Off, Zen Headbutt, U-turn

Niche Moves
========
**Spiky Shield**: This move helps Ogerpon-W get some free damage against physical attackers, which could put them in 2HKO range.
**Synthesis**: Having longevity in combination with Swords Dance can be valuable when setting up against special attackers, especially when it has the Special Defense boost after Terastallizing.
**Quick Attack**: After a Swords Dance boost, Quick Attack can be an effective late-game option to pick off faster pokemon that are weakened from attacks or hazards, such as Meowscarada and Greninja.

Common Items
========
**Wellspring Mask**: Use this if you don't want to get disqualified for cheating.

Tera
========
Ogerpon-W is generally reliant on using Tera to make the most use of its sweeping potential. In addition, being able to Tera gives it an arguably better defensive typing in certain scenarios, such as trading its Ground resistance for losing a weakness to Poison-, Flying-, and Bug-type; especially U-turn. It can still function without being a Tera Captain; however, it will lose out on the notable damage output from Tera-boosted Ivy Cudgel and the Special Defense boost from Embody Aspect.

Draft Strategy
========
Ogerpon-W is a great option if you are looking for a solid physical wallbreaker and sweeper. Nearly every offensive or balance team would appreciate the role it provides. If you are planning to draft Ogerpon-W as a Tera Captain, then it would be recommended for your first pick to be banned from using or not reliant on Tera, such as Garchomp, Iron Valiant, Darkrai, and Great Tusk.

**Special wallbreakers**: Many special attackers like Latios, Ursaluna-B, Chi-Yu, and Gholdengo can compliment Ogerpon-W's physical offense when it comes to pressuring the opposing team and beating Ogerpon-W's checks.
**Speed Control**: While Ogerpon-W has a good Speed tier, it can get forced out fairly easily by naturally faster Pokemon or Choice Scarf users; therefore, it is preferred to draft fast pokemon alongside Ogerpon-W such as Tornadus-T and Iron Valiant.
**Entry hazard control**: Ogerpon-W greatly appreciates strong hazard setters to accumulate chip on its checks, enabling Ogerpon-W to get KOs. It is advised to pair Ogerpon-W with proper hazard removal, as it is unable to run Heavy-Duty Boots and needs to be relatively healthy to pull off an effective sweep.
**Knock Off**: In addition to the suggestion above, having a couple of teammates with Knock Off to remove opposing Heavy-Duty Boots to further provide damage from hazard stacking would be invaluable for Ogerpon-W.

Checks and Counters
========
**Grass-types**: Some bulky Grass types can effectively handle Ogerpon-W's STAB combination and take advantage of Ogerpon-W's middling bulk, although it can pivot out on them with U-turn.
**Dragon-types**: Ogerpon-W can be exploited by an opposing Tera Dragon Pokemon that can survive an attack and OHKO or heavily danage Ogerpon-W. In addition, bulky Dragon types like Dragonite, Baxcalibur, and Salamence can set up on it. However, they would need to be wary of Taunt and Play Rough.
**Faster threats**: While Ogerpon-W has an acceptable Speed tier, it is susceptible to getting revenge killed by Choice Scarf users and naturally faster pokemon such as Meowscarada, Sneasler, and Iron Boulder. However, specially offensive Choice Scarf users would require prior damage on Ogerpon-W due to the Special Defense boost gained from Embody Aspect.

[overview]
Draft order: Mid-second round to Late-third round Middle of round 2 onwards reads better here

Price range: 16-17 Points

Overview: Ogerpon-W functions as a strong wallbreaker and sweeper with good typing, a solid Attack stat coupled with the 1.2x boost from Wellspring Mask, and a great speed tier. It's offensive capabilities are bolstered with Swords Dance and Tera-boosted Ivy Cudgel that can get OHKOes and deal heavy damage to many defensive walls. this is way too awkwardly phrased, something like "with a good typing and a solid Attack stat, which is further boosted by the Wellspring Mask. This is coupled with it having a good speed tier and the ability to raise that with Trailblaze." not sure id call its speed tier great, its a good speed tier but dont oversell it, the item lock + realistically always being outsped by something naturally means it isnt the hardest to revenge kill. can also mention that it has solid support options such as encore and u-turn which mean it isnt forced into being a one dimensional breaker. its ultimately gonna be someones early pick and you wanna sell them on that

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
* Role 1 - Set-Up Sweeper:
Ogerpon-W excels at setting up an SD and putting immediate pressure on the opposing team. It has other coverage options like Knock Off, Play Rough, and Superpower to break past it's checks. In addition, the SpDef boost from Embody Aspect can come in handy to survive a special hit from a faster pokemon expecting to revenge kill.
* Role 2 - Trailblaze + 3 Attacks:
This set allows Ogerpon-W to function as a potential late-game cleaner after getting off a Trailblaze, and using Tera-boosted Ivy Cudgel to blow past the rest of the opposing team.
* Role 3 - All-Out Attacker:
In certain matchups where Ogerpon-W is not expected to sweep, it can utilize 4 attacks relatively well to support it's teammates. In particular, Knock Off can remove items and U-Turn to get momentum.
combine these first three, ultimately its job is to wallabreak, sometimes that can translate into cleaning. if ud rly want, u can distinctly separate wallbreaker from cleaner but, the only real difference is trailblaze, which a set intended for wallbreaking can also run
* Role 4 - Hazard Stack:
Ogerpon-W can set up Spikes to pressure the opposing team and assist it's team members. It can use Synthesis for longevity, which grants more opportunities to get hazards up.
mention that this is by far its least preferable of its common roles, its not a bad set but its niche relative to the other two
* Role 5 - Stallbreaker:
Ogerpon-W is capable of disrupting defensive pokemon with good utility options like Knock Off, Taunt, Encore, and Leech Seed.
id just delete this entirely, you can put any of those moves onto a sd or 3a set, no need to dedicate a section to them

Common Moves
========
* Primary STAB Moves: Ivy Cudgel, Power Whip, Wood Hammer, Horn Leech, Trailblaze just a priority thing, move wood hammer to last since its definitely the least common of these
* Setup moves: Swords Dance
* Utility moves: Taunt, Encore, Spikes
* Coverage: Superpower, Low Kick, Play Rough, Knock Off, Zen Headbutt, U-Turn

Niche Moves
========
* Spiky Shield: This move helps Ogerpon-W get some free damage against physical attackers, which could put them in 2HKO range.
* Synthesis: Having longevity alongside the SD set can be valuable when setting up against special attackers, especially when it has the SpDef boost after Tera.

Common Items
========
* Common item 1: Wellspring Mask is a mandatory item that gives a 1.2x attack boost to Ogerpon-W.
do not explain what the item does, can put in a joke or smth like "This is literally the only item it can hold if you don’t want to be disqualified for cheating." @UT approved this /srs

Niche Items
========
* Niche item 1: Not applicable, since Ogerpon-W is required to use an item slot for Wellspring Mask.
Just delete this sections as its item locked

Tera
========
Ogerpon-W is generally reliant on using Tera to make the most use of it's sweeping potential. It can still function without being a Tera captain, however it will lose out on the notable damage output from Tera-boosted Ivy Cudgel, and the SpDef boost from Embody Aspect. Can mention that it also gives it an arguably better defensive typing in certain scenarios, trading the ground resist to no longer be weak to psn/flying/bug - not being u-turn weak is relevant

Draft Strategy
========
Ogerpon-W is a great option if you are looking for a solid fast physical breaker and sweeper. Nearly every offensive or balance teams that would appreciate the role it provides.
ideally your first pick is not tera reliant/is tera banned, the likes of iv, chomp, darkrai come to mind. should make this clear since we're assuming they cant tera cap the r1 and oger
* Special wallbreakers: Many special attackers can compliment Ogerpon-W's physical offense when it comes to pressuring the opposing team, however it would be ideal if the special wallbreaker in question can beat Ogerpon-W's checks. list examples
* Faster Pokemon: While Ogerpon-W has a good speed tier, it can get forced out fairly easily by naturally faster Pokemon or Scarfers, therefore it is preferred to draft fast pokemon alongside Ogerpon-W. list examples, can also mention strong scarfers/priority mons as a whole, would rename this to speed control
* Hazard Stack: Ogerpon-W greatly appreciates hazards to accumulate chip on it's defensive checks and enables Ogerpon-W to get KOs. would change this to hazard control, and merge with the one below - it needs strong setters and removers to enable it, and ideally a teammate or two with knock off to help remove boots, would then go onto list a couple of examples
* Removal: It is advised to draft Ogerpon-W with proper hazard control, as it is unable to run Boots and needs to be relatively healthy to pull off an effective sweep.

Checks and Counters
========
* Grass types: Some bulky Grass types can effectively handle Ogerpon-W's STAB combination, and heal off the damage or exploit Ogerpon-W's middling bulk.
* Dragon types: Ogerpon-W can be set-up bait for the top-tier Dragon types, however, they would need to be wary of Taunt and/or Play Rough. is this accurate? i can only think of dnite and gouging fire, the others all cannot setup due to fear of play rough/superpower, would reword this to talking moreso abt bulkier dragons as a whole/tera dragon on bulky mons, can thus delete the point below. would also mention that these mons tend to be able to OHKO it back/chip it heavily
* Opposing Tera: Since Ogerpon-W is restricted to just one Tera type, it can be exploited in prep by an opposing Tera Grass/Dragon captain that can take the resisted attack and 2HKO Ogerpon-W.
* Scarfers: While Ogerpon-W has an acceptable speed tier of 110, it is susceptible to getting revenged by scarfers who naturally outspeed that benchmark. However, special scarfers would require prior chip on Ogerpon-W due to the SpDef boost gained from Embody Aspect. id make this about naturally faster pokemon in general, currently reads that only scarfers can beat ogerpon, thinking mons like meow boulder and sneas

for all four how does it get around this, what teammates are ideal, is there anything it can tech to deal with them

Common Roles
========
* Role 1 Remove the role numbers - just the role names should be fine. - Set-Up Sweeper:
Ogerpon-W excels at setting up an SD and putting immediate pressure on the opposing team. It has other coverage options like Knock Off, Play Rough, and Superpower to break past it's checks. In addition, the SpDef boost from Embody Aspect can come in handy to survive a special hit from a faster pokemon expecting to revenge kill.
* Role 2 - Trailblaze + 3 Attacks Cleaner: Could rename this to something like utility attacker? This seems too hyperspecific in Trailblaze + 3 attacks.
In certain matchups where Ogerpon-W is not expected to sweep, it can function as a potential late-game cleaner after getting off a Trailblaze, and using Tera-boosted Ivy Cudgel to blow past the rest of the opposing team.
* Role 3 - Hazard Stack:
This is the least preferable set for Ogerpon-W to use, however it fulfills a niche supporting role of setting up Spikes to pressure the opposing team, and assist team members. Ogerpon-W can use Synthesis for longevity, which grants more opportunities to get hazards up.
Could talk about encore sets as sets for general utility? Encore 3 attacks/sub encore are both potential sets on top of SD Encore.

Common Moves
========
* Primary STAB Moves: Ivy Cudgel, Power Whip, Horn Leech, Trailblaze, Wood Hammer
* Setup moves: Swords Dance
* Utility moves: Taunt, Encore, Spikes Substitute should be mentioned here/in niche moves, if in niche moves could talk about how it's at least an option on most Ogerpon sets
* Coverage: Superpower, Low Kick, Play Rough, Knock Off, Zen Headbutt, U-Turn Quick Attack should be mentioned here/in niche moves

Niche Moves
========

* Dragon types: Ogerpon-W can be exploited by an opposing Tera Dragon pokemon that can take the attack and OHKO back or heavily chip Ogerpon-W. In addition, bulky Dragon types like Dragonite and Gouging Fire can set up on it. However, they would need to be wary of Taunt and/or Play Rough. Is Gouging Fire necessarily worth a mention? It takes a lot from Cudgel since it's not a resist. It's like saying something like Necrozma can set up on it. If you want another setup dragon example, Salamence is right there.
* Faster Threats: While Ogerpon-W has an acceptable speed tier of 110, it is susceptible to getting revenged by scarfers and naturally faster pokemon such as Meowscarada, Sneasler, and Iron Boulder. However, special scarfers would require prior chip on Ogerpon-W due to the SpDef boost gained from Embody Aspect.
