I decided to use Pokemon that I have never used before, while trying not to double up on types. (I think I've used Lucario about five times already)
Decidueye I didn't have a preference for any of the starters when they were first announced, but Decidueye grew on me more than the others.
Sandslash I chose Sandslash pretty much immediately after it was announced. Love the design and love the typing, even though it isn't great.
Araquanid I like the design better than Golisopod, and the twist to its ability seals the deal.
Magmortar Moon doesn't have great fire types, and Magmortar is the only one that I actually like out of the lot.
Minior It didn't stand out until I saw that it had Shell Smash. That, plus it's ability, made it one that I wanted to work around.
Snorlax I realised I needed another Pokemon for the really early game, and Snorlax was easily the best of the early game.

Went ahead and planned out my teams for both sun and moon, now that data on move sets and type are complete. Here they are below:

Pokemon Sun

Decidueye@Scope Lens
Jolly; Grass / Ghost
Overgrow
  • Roost
  • Leaf Blade
  • Spirit Shackle
  • Swords Dance
Both of my teams have balance as the name of the game. A simple boosting attacker here with Roost as evidence of its vestigial type. Not much else to say here.

Bruxish@Amulet Coin
Jolly; Water / Psychic
Strong Jaw
  • Crunch
  • Ice Fang
  • Aqua Tail
  • Psychic Fangs
Bruxish is surprisingly useable with its 105 attack and 90+ speed, making it one of the faster choices of the Alolan pokemon. Strong Jaw boosts 3 of its four attacks, with additional STAB on psychic fangs. Here's hoping Ice Fang is a legal egg move from the start.

Salazzle@Life Orb
Timid; Poison / Fire
Corrosion
  • Fire Blast
  • Nasty Plot
  • Sludge Bomb
  • Dragon Pulse
Salazzle has been a popular choice as I've seen, for good reason. A speedy and powerful special attacking fire-type, I knew from the start that I had to have it. Moves and coverage are self-explanatory.

Ninetales@Shell Bell
Modest; Ice / Fairy
Snow Warning
  • Blizzard
  • Moonblast
  • Nasty Plot
  • Aurora Veil
I've always had a soft spot for Ninetales, and thought it such a shame that the special split back in GSC wasn't very kind to it. Its design, however, has cemented its spot on the team, though this was originally intended for Tapu Koko. Dual STABs with Nasty Plot for added power and Aurora Veil for team support and to patch up its less-than-stellar bulk.

Kommo-O@Leftovers
Lonely; Dragon / Fighting
Soundproof
  • Poison Jab
  • Sky Uppercut
  • Dragon Dance
  • Clanging Scales
The pseudo of the generation and one of my favorite designs. While its movepool is somewhat limited until the tutors come around next game, this should do quite fine. Dual-STAB with poison-type coverage for Fairy types.

Toucannon@King's Rock
Naughty; Normal / Flying
Skill Link
  • Overheat
  • Brave Bird
  • Bullet Seed
  • Fury Attack
Toucannon is one of the cooler designs for a regional bird, with unusual options in fighting- and fire-type coverage. Another pokemon that will require breeding, but it should all be worth it given the power behind Brave Bird.

Pokemon Moon

Incineroar@Expert Belt
Lonely; Fire / Dark
Blaze
  • Bulk Up
  • Cross Chop
  • Flamethrower
  • Darkest Lariat
Litten is my favorite of the starters this gen, and I've warmed to Incineroar. A mixed bulk up set should do it well given its subpar speed and decent defensive typing.

Primarina@Leftovers
Modest; Water / Fairy
Torrent
  • Ice Beam
  • Moonblast
  • Energy Ball
  • Hydro Pump
This spot was initially reserved for Tapu Fini but Primarina will have to do given the former's late encounter. Not much to say here other than a simple 4-attack set to take advantage of those high specials.

Exeggutor-A@Amulet Coin
Rash; Grass / Dragon
Frisk
  • Giga Drain
  • Sleep Powder
  • Flamethrower
  • Dragon Hammer

Specially mixed alolan Exeggutor with a shiny new dragon move. Giga Drain is acquired through bredding with Cottonee which I should have by the time I encounter this. It will also double as a capture specialist given its access to Sleep Powder.

Raichu-A@AloRaichurium-Z
Timid; Electric / Psychic
Surge Surfer
  • Psyshock
  • Grass Knot
  • Thunderbolt
  • Electric Terrain
I've always liked Raichu, and this is the perfect opportunity to use it. Electric Terrain is breedable for Pichu, and gives me a boost to Thunderbolt and doubled speed. I'll just have to be careful not to use it with Exeggutor's sleep powder.

Palossand@Big Root
Modest; Ghost / Ground
Water Compaction
  • Shore Up
  • Giga Drain
  • Earth Power
  • Shadow Ball
One of my favorite pokemon introduced this gen with a simple moveset. 3 Attacks + recovery will keep this relevant, and its STABs have pretty good coverage.

Sandslash-A@Shell Bell
Adamant; Ice / Steel
Slush Rush
  • Hail
  • Iron Head
  • Earthquake
  • Icicle Crash
Alolan Sandslash rounds out the team with a weather sweeper set and resistances of the steel-type. I like the concept on this and can't wait to try it out, especially with two flinching moves to take advantage of its high speed in hail.

I'm having a lot of trouble deciding how I want to build my Moon team. I wanted to try using only Alolan Pokemon for a change.

Tsareena is my only mandatory Pokemon, and I hate the poison weaknesses overlapping. I went out of my way to stack three fairy types with differing weaknesses that would not overlap. The only Pokemon I am not sold on is Toucannon, but it rounded our the resistances perfectly and added some more physical attack power.

Any thoughts or tips for a better Tsareena + Primarina core? I like using the prettier and more cutesy Pokemon, but I still want to have good type coverage and stuff. I could always swap Primarina for Milotic or something.

Geta92

formerly -GetaX-
I'm finally starting to settle on this team here since it contains all Pokemon I want to try out and remains pretty balanced. I really want to use a team with new Pokemon / Forms only.

I have no clue which items you can get in the story so I'll list pretty generic ones.

Decidueye @ Nothing
Trait: Overgrow
  • Spirit Shackle
  • Leaf Blade
  • Acrobatics
  • U-Turn
Lycanroc @ Hard Rock
Trait: Keen Eye
  • Stone Edge
  • Crunch
  • Brick Break
  • Swords Dance
Wishiwashi @ Shell Bell
Trait: Schooling
  • Surf
  • Ice Beam
  • Earthquake
  • U-Turn
Salazzle @ Charcoal
Trait: Corrosion
  • Flamethrower
  • Sludge Bomb
  • Dragon Pulse
  • Nasty Plot
Bewear @ Black Belt
Trait: Fluffy
  • Return
  • Hammer Arm
  • Payback
  • Earthquake
Ninetails @ Fairy Plate
Trait: Snow Cloak
  • Ice Beam
  • Dazzling Gleam
  • Dark Pulse
  • Psyshock

I only had Vikavolt and Komala decided for the longest time, but once I figured out which starter I wanted it got easier to fill in the rest of the team.

There were quite a few Pokemon (like Palossand, Turtonator, and Alolan Muk, to name a few) that really interested me, but didn't really seem to fit in terms of typing (especially since Decidueye ended up being part Ghost). I was considering Silvally for my Water or Fire-type at one point, but wanted not to have the same Pokemon as a major NPC and I wasn't sure how early you could get it. In the end, I'm very pleased with what I ended up with and can't wait for Friday to come around so I can start using these guys.

I posted my teams very early, but never said my planned sets for them, since I wasn't sure and wanted to play by ear. But I wanted peoples thoughts. This is for both In game and for actually competitive teams

My rule for my first teams in a new game is No old pokemon, and 1 ghost type. I broke that here with Mismagius. I originally was planning to use Oricorio Senzu, but i wasn't taking advantage of dancer ability, which I really want to. I made the exception with Mismagius since she is one of my favorite ghost pokemon, I never got to use her in a starting team, and she fits the theme that just happened to happen for my Moon team: Lovely deadly ladies.

Primarina(torrent)@Z Primarina/Assault vest, Modest/Mild/Quiet(Modest is prefered but I am soft reseting for a female and Modest... I may need to just grab what I can)
Sparkling Aria
Psychic
Ice Beam
Moonblast

Bulky Special attacker. Loved her design since the leaks and think this is best for the actual starter you get. Psychic with Tapu Lele's terrain will let her just wreck.

Mismagius(Levitate)@Expert Belt/CHoice specs Modest
Shadowball/Hex
Dazzling Gleam
Mystic Fire
Thunderbolt

Never got a chance to make a team with Mismagius last gen, happy to finally do it. She get great coverage with this set. I am thinking Hex because since Salazzle will be poisoning everyone I should be able to guaruntee the extra hex damage. Mystic fire I loved on Delfox, and wanted to use it again. A way to constantly lower the damage of special pokes is always nice.

Salazzle(corrosion)@Air Balloon, Timid
Poison Gas
Venom Drench
Venoshock
Fire Blast

I always wanted to use a Venom Drench user on a team, and finally have a pokemon to do it. Poison gas hits both foes in doubles, as does Venom Drench. Great way to ruin 2 pokemon in just 2 turns. Rinse repeat whenever they switch.

Tsareena(Queenly Majesty)@Leftovers , Adament
Trop Kick
Hi-Jump Kick
U-Turn
Rapid spin/Play Rough/Aromatherapy

Love this design as soon as I saw it and have to use her. The last move really depends on how easy it is to get play rought via Breeding, since I don't tend to breed too much with my first time.

Tapu Lele(Psychic Surge)@Life orb/Tapu Z, Modest/Timid
Psyshock
Moonblast
Focus Blast
Natures Madness

Great pokemon, great design, I know people don't seem fond with natures madness, but instantly doing 50%(or 75%) of a pokemons health is massive, espcially if its vs a tank. Plus nothing is immune to it unlike Hyper fang. Once that damage is done she or a partner can easily clean up.

Pheromosa(Beast Boost)@Life Orb, Naive
U turn
High Jump Kick/Focus Blast
Ice Beam
Poison Jab

Loved this UB when it was revealed, and when I heard it was catchable I had to use it. Not sure on HJKick vs Focus blast, leaning towards kick though for just massive power.

Now for my Sun team This team has turned into a super tanky team

Incineroar(Blaze)@Expert Belt/Z cyrstal/Life orb, Adament
Darkest Lariet
Flare Blitz
Cross CHop
Leech Life

Litten was my fav, but Primarina is my favorite final, with Incineroar a close second. Love his animations, so amazing

Palossand(Sand compaction)@Weakness Policy, Bold/Modest
Shore Up
Shadow Ball
Earth Power
Giga Drain

Had to have this ghost type once I saw it. Great design, and a cool ability. However I thought it would be hard to do until I saw the next pokemon on the team. With Surfs give little damage from that pokemon, giving basically a +2 to Defense, Att, and SpA in 1 turn, this guy will be a monster wall. Plus shore up for healing? GG

Toxapex(Merciless)@black Sludge, Bold
Baneful Bunker
VenoShock
Surf
Recover

The super wall of this team. I didn't even mean for this team to just become so tanky I picked it from the demo datamining sprites only haha. I know regenirator will let him live more, but I cannot pass up merciless damage. If it turns out to be just meh, I'll switch it to regenirator. So much Damage venoshock and surf does criting even with no SpA boosting nature its crazy

Alolan Ninetails(Snow Warning)@Light Clay, Timid
Aurora Veil
Blizzard
Moonblast
FreezeDry

I loved this design as soon as I saw it. Then I learn it gets snow warning AND this duel screens move? Score. This with Toxapex alone makes him unkillable. Its worth the hail damage I will be taking with my other teams to use this beauty

Kommo-o(Overcoat/Bulletproof)@Expert Belt/White herb/Life Orb, Not sure for nature
Clanging Scales
Sky Uppercut
Poison Jab
FLamethrower/Shell Smash(if it's proven he gets it at some point)

I think this guy has a great design, is is probably an amazing wallbreaker. High attack and SpA means it can hit anything well. Shell Smash was recently discovered but no one is show how he gets it. Shell Smash would be a great last move for the Dragon

Celesteela(Beast Boost)@Leftovers, Adament
Heavy Slam
Earthquake
Seed Bomb
Leech Seed/Toxic

At first I was not sure what to think of this pokemon, but seeing that its Space Ship Princess Kaguya, I had to have her. Its so heavy Heavy slam hits 90% of the pokemon in the game for max damage. Thats amazing. I am torn on the last move; Leech Seed Works well with the hail and poison damage on the team, but toxic gives Toxapex another way to start doing its merciless crit damage.

And I already have a third team ready to go with the grass starter. This team has become a very annoying team to face against

Decidueye(Overgrow/Long reach)@Leftovers/something, Jolly Nature
Spirit Shackle
Curse
Roost
Leaf Blade

I am not sure if anyone has looked at this set yet. A ghost type with curse, a trapping move that damages, and also a safe reliable heal? Sounds fun!

Alolan Persian(Fur Coat)@Dark Z Cyrstal, Bold/timid nature
Parting Shot
Foul Play
Taunt
Toxic/Flatter/Fake out

I know some people car this cat garfield, but she's cute, reminds me of my cat. This set is all about annouance, and passing a full heal to a target you switch out to. Last move I am not sure on. Toxic is a safe but, but may be runing toxic spikes, so thats not needed. Fake out is always a safe move.

Ribombee(Shield Dust)@Not sure, Timid
Pollen Puff
Speed Swap
Moonblast
Quiver Dance/psychic

She is so cute I wanna give her a hug. Pollen Puff and Speed swap work so well with the rest of my team, especially the next guy. Not sure on last move, either boosting for more damage, or Psychic for coverage

WishyWashy(Schooling)@Sitrus berry, not sure of nature
Hydro Pump
Ice Beam
Earthquake
U Turn

This beast is a beast, Love the idea of this pokemon. With Ribombee keeping it nice and healthy and a speed swap it will do some massive damage.

Stoutland(Scrappy)@something, Adament
Crunch
Return
Play Rough
Psychic Fangs

Seeing the ability to ride one made me want to put one on a team, and with psychic fangs it will be great at dealing with wall breakers.

Nihilego(Beast Boost)@Air Ballon, not sure
Stealth Rock
Toxic Spikes
Clear Smog/Sludge Wave
Power Gem

What a strange pokemon this is, I love it. A bit lovecraftian in its look and type. Seems to be a great lead pokemon with duel hazard setting.

Another team idea I had for my moon:

I don't care what anyone says. I will take that battery and I will beat the game with it and NO TEAM SKULL GRUNTS OR AETHER EMPLOYEES WILL STOP ME.

Not sure if the insert picture url link worked so I attatched a screenshot.
I've never been a huge fan of using the starters since I was disappointed with my choices in Black and White (and for me, X and Y continued the trend).
I love Alolan Marowak's design and having a physical Fire/Ghost typing keeps him fresh for me.
Besides that I picked pokemon whose typings wouldn't conflict and who had sweet designs. I'll likely use Primarina until Tapu Fini becomes accessible late game. The same goes for Crabominable and Kommo-o.

this is what I expect my team to look like by end-game for my first playthrough. I've been Team Rowlet since Day 1 (although I'm really disappointed in its speed, to the point of thinking about picking another starter, but whatever, this is in-game and I love birds too much) and I'm really glad I can get Magnemite so early because I've never actually used one in-game. I'm also surprised at how relatively viable Ribombee turned out to be; I'm sure I'm not the only one that dismissed the Cutiefly line as trash since their reveal but I'm glad that's not the case. I'm also glad that Zygarde 10% can be acquired mid-game. I originally wanted Kommo-o but it pops up way too late for it to be considered part of my in-game team. Up until then, though, I'm gonna be rocking a Lyncanroc-Midday (the primary reason I'm going with Sun version tbh). if I get a guy Rockruff, I'm calling it Balto. if by some stroke of luck I manage to get a shiny Rockruff, I'm naming it Tiger after the blue wolf from Monster Rancher. I decided on using Ash-Greninja cuz.....I might as well. Greninja's one of my favorite starters and I'm not even sure if it will be allowed in OU so I might as well use it while I can. If Ash-Greninja didn't exist, I'd run Wishiwashi and call it SQUAD!! or something

Decidueye (Artemis if female, Shinon if male)
Magnezone (Legion)
Ribombee (Jaco if male, Luma if female)
Salazzle (Morinth)
Zygarde
Greninja

So apparently I just found out NOW that Lycanroc cannot learn Earthquake. I have already taken the liberty of screaming in frustration elsewhere. I'm still using the Midday form for my Sun Team but should I drop Alolan Raichu for Palossand so I have a Ground type attack to back me up or not? Or just teach Earthquake to something else on my Sun Team that can use it effectively?

EDIT: Just a reminder as to what my Sun Team is for those too lazy to go back through this thread.

Well I think Kommo-o gets Earthquake. Does the terminator bug get it?

I'm trying to space these pokemon out so that I only catch about 2 per island and have a full team by the 4th.

Does anyone know if there's an item that lets you change Oricorio's form? Is it a key item or can I trade for it? I intend to catch Oricorio on the second or third island.

Here are the Pokémon I used in my playthrough.

Litten-Torracat-Incineroar
Rowlet-Dartrix-Decidueye
Popplio-Brionne-Primarina
Meowth-Persian
Rattata-Raticate
Bounsweet-Steenee-Tsareena
Stufful-Bewear
Wimpod-Golisopod
Geodude-Graveler
Sandshrew-Sandslash
Lunala

My final League team was Incineroar, Tsareena, Sandslash, Graveler, Bewear and Lunala.

You catch Oricorio on the first island. Then on the other islands you find Nectar that allows you to change its form. This is a consumable item, so the amount is limited, though every day it regenerates in the places you find them, so you can get more.

But can I trade it from someone else?

apparently Sandygast evolves into Palossand at level 42 so if you're willing to wait that long go ahead. its movepool isn't....that great for in-game since most of the moves it gets prior to 36 are physical and it's a special attacker.

if you absolutely *had* to have a Ground type, Alolan Dugtrio or Mudsdale seem like good picks. no Arena Trap and a 10 point speed nerf on Alolan Dugtrio sucks for competitive but for in-game its a god with base 100 atk and 110 speed +Steel typing. Mudsdale has great stats outside of its speed and its pre-evo has base 100 Attack, comes with Bulldoze (they appear at level 10-13 in the route they first pop up) and learns its signature move at level 24 (which is basically a single-target Earthquake with 5 less base power and base accuracy)

also the TM for Earthquake becomes available post-game

How exactly does a wild Pokémon call for help? I really want a Mareanie but I've read that they're rare.
Fish up a Corsola, use Adrenaline Orb, weaken the Corsola to as low HP as possible (False Swipe is the best), then keep defeating the allies it summons. Soon enough a Mareanie will show up. Corsola will probably use Recover - keep its HP as low as you can, this will make it call for help often.

Probably not the best team I can come up with, but for my first playthrough I thought I could just go with some of my favourites.

This team is a bit weak to Rock and Ground though...

Koumashiki

n o h o m o
is an Artist Alumnus
Moon team:

Yes, having 3 faes in one team is a very good idea, but I just pick what I like that can be caught at the first 2 islands. But well, I kinda have the tool to handle poison, and defensively the team isn't that bad (maybe offensively lacking a little super effective hits on some stuff but eh)

upload_2016-11-15_10-7-23.png

Basically most of my favorites from gen 7 on a team with some other options to alleviate some weaknesses. Primarina/Kommo-o/Salazzle are the basis of the team, and Tsareena was added for an FWG core. Toucannon and Palossand are mainly for immunities and Kommo-o because Dragon is indisputably my favorite type and it's pretty customizable in its abilities. The main problems with the team are that it's completely vulnerable to Psychic and Flying spam and half of my team won't be available until the second island, so I'm probably going to patch up my team temporarily with mons like Crabrawler and Cutiefly to get past Hala and the trials. In terms of trying to get natures, Salandit's female-to-male ratio is pretty low, so getting a Timid/Modest one will be a pain. Also, Kommo-o won't be available to me for a majority of the game, but I've usually had to cope with not having the 6th team member for quite a while in previous playthroughs, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem. The team's hella weak to Ice, but Primarina is a decent special tank and Salazzle demolishes most Ice-types.
