Destiny Warrior

is a Smogon Media Contributor Alumnus
On QC recommendations, changed SD set to Agility.

[Overview]
• Has access to Swords Dance, Agility, Nasty Plot AND Cheer Up.
• Movepool on special side is rather poor, must rely on Focus Blast + Hidden Power Ghost, and has problems with Munchlax, not recommended.

[Set]
Name: Agility
Move 1: Agility
Move 2: Hi Jump Kick
Move 3: Crunch
Move 4: Ice Punch
Ability: Inner Focus / Steadfast
Item: Life Orb
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 36 HP / 196 Atk / 36 Def / 36 SpD / 196 Spe

[Set Comments]
• Riolu’s only effective set that is not outclassed, reaching 30 Speed with a single turn of set up.
• STAB Hi Jump Kick does a lot of damage when backed by Life Orb.
• Crunch works well with Hi Jump Kick, only being resisted by Croagunk.
• Ice Punch hits Dragon-type Pokemon and Gligar.

[Additional Comments]
• Needs Stealth Rock support.
• Appreciates Stealth Rock and Spikes support to soften up Croagunk.
• Other options in the 4th slot are Blaze Kick(for hitting Grass types, especially paras, who resists Hi Jump Kick), ThunderPunch(for hitting Mantine harder) and Rock Slide(for hitting Fire types and Bug types).

[Team Options]
• Works well with Wynaut, who can get it a free set up turn.
• Gligar and Mantyke are excellent teammates, as they stop Croagunk.
• Misdreavus can take advantage of it luring in Meditite, who causes it major problems.

[Optional Changes]
• It can try to use Nasty Plot, Cheer Up or Swords Dance, but its movepool is too small for a special set, and it is too weak for a mixed set and too slow for Swords Dance.
• It can potentially run an Ankle Sweep + Inner Focus lead set, though that is gimmicky at best.
• It has access to Quick Attack and Bullet Punch, but they are not very useful on Riolu.

[Counters]
• Meditite causes it major problems.
• Croagunk can do heavy damage to it.
• Has major problems with bulky Pokemon like Hippopotas who can take a hit and retaliate, since Riolu is rather frail.

[Dream World]
• Riolu gets Mischievous Heart through the Dream World, but the only competitively viable moves that it boosts are its various stat-boosting moves, something...it probably won't need except to evade the rare users of Taunt who lack Mischievous Heart.

Why not try an agility set? I got sweeped by one before X_X
Name: agility
Move 1:agility
Move 2: Hi Jump Kick
Move 3: Crunch
Move 4: Bullet Punch / Quick Attack / Blaze Kick / Ice Punch
Ability: Inner Focus / Steadfast
Item: Life Orb
Nature: Jolly
IVs: 0 HP
EVs: 196 Atk / 116 Def / 196 Spe

Riolu has decent bulk, it can survive a Gligars EQ. ice pucnh for gligar n stuff, high jump kick for stab, and crunch for ghosts. Blaze kick for croagunk, bullet pucnh and q attack for priority.

You say Riolu has decent bulk, and yet the HP IVs are zero. :0 Seems a tad contradictory. Also, no, Riolu is not bulky, almost nothing in LC is (least of all Riolu). Machop is bulky.... Riolu isn't. In any case, that issue aside, I just find myself wondering if Agility Riolu would hit hard enough. :\ SD Riolu is good because he's mini-Luke, having priority boosted by SD... Agility Riolu has the problem of having little use for priority, as it is weak, unSTABbed, and unboosted; but without it, it's revenge-killed too easily. Bottom line, it sounds outclassed by the SD set.

Shouldn't "Swords Dance" be "all of them?"

Also Steadfast is way worse than Inner Focus, because you're boosting your speed with Agility.

I think Steadfast should be completely removed and just have Inner Focus there, since you're boosting with Agility anyways and some scarfers with flinching moves can just 2HKO you anyways.

Why are you mentioning NP SD and Agility if you're only using one of them as a set.............

And I honestly don't think there is any way an Evo Stone Drain Punch set will be bad with Swords Dance. It will wall-break like Meditite but not lose to Misdreavus automatically.

Riolu doesn't have a terrible MH movepool. Just an incredibly bad one!

- Overhead Throw
- Copycat
- Substitute
- Toxic
@ Evo-stone ofc

or something.

Sure, it's not great, but it can sometimes work?

Wait, if Crunch and Hi-Jump-Kick are only resisted by Croagunk, why don't you slash a move to counter Croagunk, especially if Croagunk is more problematic to a team than Gligar

List teammates who can learn Stealth Rock and Spikes.

Maybe Bronzor for Stealth Rock, and Ferroseed for Spikes?

Not much else Riolu can do.

I'll stamp this when / if you edit the OP with this and all the above changes.

Agreed with Azelf ^
Entry hazards really are what depends on whether you can OHKO some pokes, so those are very important.
