Moves
========
Close Combat is Sawk's strongest STAB move and deals huge amounts of damage to most Pokemon that do not resist it. Knock Off hits the Ghost- and Psychic-type Pokemon that are immune to and resist Sawk's Close Combat and has the added benefit of removing items such as Leftovers and Eviolite from the foe. Zen Headbutt is Sawk's best way of hitting defensive Poison-types such as Weezing and Vileplume that can switch in on Close Combat. Alternatively, Stone Edge hits Flying-types such as Scyther, Pelipper, Rotom-S, and Colbur Berry Xatu. Earthquake can be used to hit Garbodor and Skuntank without taking recoil damage from Rocky Helmet and Aftermath. Taunt is an option to shut down recovery and status moves such as Synthesis and Will-O-Wisp from Pokemon such as Vileplume and Gourgeist-XL. Taunt also helps Sawk's matchup against Garbodor, preventing it from setting up Spikes or Toxic Spikes.
Set Details
========
Maximum Attack and Speed investment with an Adamant nature allows Sawk to hit as hard and fast as possible. Jolly is another option that allows Sawk to outspeed positive-natured base 80 Speed Pokemon such as Mesprit, Kabutops, and Shiftry while also being able to outspeed the likes of neutral-natured Zangoose and Kangaskhan. Expert Belt is used due to Sawk's great coverage allowing it to hit most of the tier super effectively, increasing its damage output without the downsides of Life Orb recoil or a Choice item's lock-in effect. Lum Berry is another option to dodge harmful status moves such as Will-O-Wisp from Pokemon such as Weezing and to keep Sawk's Sturdy intact if Toxic Spikes are on the field. Using a Custap Berry also works well in conjunction with Sturdy, as it allows Sawk to move first if it drops below 25% of maximum HP.
Usage Tips
========
Sawk works best if it is able to bluff a Choice item in order to lure in common switch-ins for the first move it goes for. Taunt should be used on Pokemon that require recovery in order to check Sawk more than once, such as Vileplume, Musharna, Gourgeist-XL, and Mega Audino, but Sawk still has to be careful because they can choose to attack it, often dealing super effective damage. Close Combat should be used most frequently, as Sawk can just change moves on the Close Combat switch-in. If Sawk is not running Lum Berry, it should be careful of Pokemon that can burn it, such as Weezing and Misdreavus, but Taunt mitigates this most of the time.
Team Options
========
Due to Sturdy, Sawk really appreciates entry hazard control from the likes of Prinplup, Claydol, and Xatu, as keeping its Sturdy intact allows it to revenge kill most offensive Pokemon. Xatu in particular can get in Sawk safely with U-turn, and it lures in many Rock- and Ice-types such as Rhydon and Aurorus that Sawk can take advantage of. Other physical attackers such as Klinklang, Barbaracle, Gurdurr, and Shiftry appreciate Sawk being able to break down physical walls such as Weezing with Taunt should it be running the move. Fighting-types in work well in tandem with this set because Sawk is able to lure in and KO common Fighting-type answers such as Gourgeist-XL, Vileplume, and Xatu in order for Gurdurr and other Fighting-types to sweep the opposing team. Shiftry gets a special mention, as it can provide entry hazard control with Defog to keep Sawk's Sturdy intact and appreciates Pokemon such as Weezing being lured in and weakened.
