Checks and Counters
===================

**Fighting-types**: Hariyama, Pheromosa, and Buzzwole are practically the only Pokemon in the format that can cleanly OHKO Snorlax.

**Kartana**: Kartana's Sacred Sword hits Snorlax for super effective damage and slices right through any Defense boosts it has gained from Curse. Even though Kartana doesn't OHKO Snorlax, it deals heavy damage, and Snorlax deals mediocre damage in return unless it's boosted.

**Celesteela**: Celesteela takes very little damage from Snorlax's attacks and can heal back any lost health with Leech Seed and Leftovers. It can't deal much damage to Snorlax in return, however, so Snorlax can set up and eventually break through Celesteela.

**Preventing Berry Use**: Snorlax's Berry is central to its bulk and its ability to set up; Pokemon with the ability Unnerve can prevent Snorlax from eating its Berry while on the field, making it much easier to KO. Knock Off is even more dangerous—if Snorlax's Berry is Knocked Off, not only does it not get recovery on that turn, but it can't use Recycle to regain the Berry later in the game. Bug Bite and Thief are much rarer than Knock Off but can similarly prevent Snorlax from using its Berry at any point in the game.

**Intimidate and Burn**: Intimidate offsets boosts from Curse and forces Snorlax to keep boosting in order to have offensive pressure, although Belly Drum sets are not greatly hindered. If not partnered with Tapu Fini, all Snorlax sets are vulnerable to being burned and having their damage output severely hampered.

**Toxic**: Toxic slowly wears Snorlax down and eventually deals more damage than it can recover with Recycle and its Iapapa Berry.

**Taunt**: Taunt prevents Snorlax from setting up with Curse or Belly Drum and from recovering its Berry with Recycle.

Kartana deserves mention as a counter as it cant cut through Snorlax's Curses with Sacred Sword or just get a crit with Scope Lens Leaf Blade. Otherwise this looks solid, QC 1/2

Why does the Belly Drum set have max attack? Even with less Attack it OHKOes everything that doesn't resist it. I've used Yoshi's EV spread, and found the improved bulk very helpful, for example Garchomp failing to 2HKO with single-target EQ - this means Snorlax can Recycle stall it. And along with Recycle stalling other things too if needed including LO Tapu Koko - I would have won a match when i just had Snorlax left against 3 Pokemon; LO Tapu Koko, Arcanine, and Rhimboee had Koko did not have Taunt (stall Koko till LO recoil, then Arcanine and Rhimboee together failed to 2HKO Snorlax so I could slowly chip at their HP with Return whilst using Recycle to get berry back).

This was Yoshi's EV spread. Not sure of the exact calculations, but after using Belly Drum, I never found myself needing more Attack and appreciating the bulk. In fact the lack of Attack only made a difference when I didn't use Belly Drum.

Yeah he used it for a Curse set, I haven't used a Curse set so I'm just commenting on the Belly Drum side of things but the bulk could be helpful htere too.

Fair question; honestly the answer is "because that's what Gavin ran." I haven't used BD nearly as much as Curse, so when picking a spread to list I went to the one that has been used most successfully. As for the actual reasoning behind it: Belly Drum Snorlax requires significant support from some combination of Trick Room, Fake Out, Follow Me/Z-Bond, and Quash. If you have that support then Snorlax shouldn't be tanking that many hits anyways, so maximizing attack to OHKO even the bulkiest targets (eg phys def P2 which could reverse your TR, non-sash Kartana, opposing Snorlax if they got a Curse up) is the best use of EVs. If your team isn't offering that support and you need Snorlax to be soaking up damage, you're probably better off not using Belly Drum at all and going for Curse+Recycle, or going mono-attacking with Return/Belly Drum/Stockpile/Recycle.

Honestly not sure about the specific scenarios you mentioned--Garchomp single-target EQ does under half even if Snorlax only has 68/188, making it a 4HKO if berry is intact, and Tec Rage into EQ doesn't KO through berry either. Stalling LO Koko and Arcanine is cool, but Snorlax with a defensive setup move does it better and could probably even handle a crit or tbolt para->full para one turn.

I will slash Recycle for Protect and mention the option of a bulkier spread under set details, but I do think max attack should stay as the main spread, if for no other reason than that it's the most successful way the set has been run.

Other Options
=============

* Mono-attacking sets can be viable, since few Ghost-types are common in the VGC 2017 metagame. Usually these sets are Return / Recycle / Protect with Curse or Belly Drum, but variants such as Return / Belly Drum / Stockpile / Recycle are also usable.
* Facade deals more damage when Snorlax is inflicted with status, but it is weak otherwise.
* Rock Slide deals spread damage and can cause a flinch if Snorlax is moving first due to Trick Room, but it is rather weak and has imperfect accuracy.
* Choice Band gives Snorlax much greater immediate power, but running it sacrifices bulk and setup potential.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fighting-types**: Hariyama, Pheromosa, and Buzzwole are practically the only Pokemon in the format that which can cleanly OHKO Snorlax.

**Kartana**: Kartana's Sacred Sword hits Snorlax for super effective damage, (RC) and slices right through any Defense boosts it has gained from Curse. Even though Kartana doesn't OHKO Snorlax, it deals heavy damage, and Snorlax deals mediocre damage in return unless it's boosted.

**Celesteela**: Celesteela takes very little damage from Snorlax's attacks and can heal back any lost health with Leech Seed and Leftovers. It can't deal much damage to Snorlax in return, however, so Snorlax can set up and eventually break through Celesteela.

**Preventing Berry Use**: Snorlax's Berry is central to its bulk and its ability to set up; Pokemon with the ability Unnerve can prevent Snorlax from eating its Berry while on the field, making it much easier to KO. Knock Off is even more dangerous—if Snorlax's Berry is Knocked Off, not only does it not get recovery on that turn, but it can't use Recycle to regain the Berry later in the game. Bug Bite and Thief are much rarer than Knock Off but can similarly prevent Snorlax from using its Berry at any point in the game.

**Intimidate and Burn**: Intimidate offsets boosts from Curse and forces Snorlax to keep boosting in order to have offensive pressure, although Belly Drum sets are not greatly hindered. If not partnered with Tapu Fini, all Snorlax sets are vulnerable to being burned and having their damage output severely hampered.

**Toxic**: Toxic slowly wears Snorlax down and eventually deals more damage than it can recover with Recycle and its Iapapa Berry.

**Taunt**: Taunt prevents Snorlax from setting up with Curse or Belly Drum and from recovering its Berry with Recycle.
