Ogerpons task is to be used as a solid pivot and a late game setup sweeper thanks to its wonderful coverage options, a strong STAB move in Ivy Cudgel, and great offensive capabilities. The use of Knock Off on Ogerpon makes it so normally switchins such as Tornadus-Therian ,Zapdos and Mandibuzz lose their item which removes a lot of their threats. U-Turn allows Ogerpon to bring momentum to your teams and switch it out on mons like Okidogi, Skeledirge and even do a decent chunk to Hydrapple if that comes in and while pivoting it will remain healthy due to its heavy-duty boots. Encore being on this set is to give it that extra turn to set up on a Zapdos Roost, Mandibuzz Defog or Weezing Galar’s defog which when paired with its ability Defiant gives Ogerpon a free attack boost. On the contrary Ogerpon is able to use the pressure it creates as opportunities to set up Spikes for its team, helping its teammates and itself at slowly chipping down the opponents answers to Ogerpon. Now sadly Ogerpon’s Tera type is locked into grass but this is not as bad as most think when Ogerpon teras it gains the ability Embody’s Aspect which gives it a plus 1 speed boost and with the additional power from stab can easily OHKO Slowking and helps it get a guaranteed 3HKO on physically defensive Toxapex. Not only does this mean Ogerpon can be a powerful breaker with tera, but as a very reliable pivot mon that can outpace mostly every unboosted mon, as well as a number of boosted pokemon such as Choice Scarfed Mienshao, Choice Scarfed Arcanine-Hisui and Excadrill after Rapid Spin. Its speed also helps it get fast encores onto popular set up threats like Belly Drum Azumarill or Calm Mind Latios/Latias.
Ogerpon’s pivoting and utility options are best suited on bulky offensive teams that cherish its abilities to disrupt opponents while bringing in their own threats. Breakers such as Azumarill, Banded Scizor and Hisuian Arcanine love Ogerpons ability to pivot them in safely, weaken their checks and potentially setup spikes so they have an easier time at breaking the opponents team. In return these mons also deal with some of Ogerpons checks in Mandibuzz and Hydrapple. Pivots that can suit well with Ogerpon include Slowking and Tornadus-Therian help teams synergize and take the stress of Ogerpon with threats like Iron Crown, Excadrill and Lokix. If you wish to take a different route with this Ogerpon set and wish to use it as a spike setter, having a stealth rock setter such as Tinkaton or Kommo-o will be an amazing choice for you, but the best teammate for this route is Sandy Shocks as it takes on the flying types that Ogerpon can’t as well as bringing volturn on the table while it sets up stealth rocks and spreads Thunder Waves Ogerpon will deal with the water types Sandy Shocks struggles with in Azumarill and Rotom-Wash.
