Overview
########
Tentacruel's unique typing and good defenses allow it to be an effective wall in the OU metagame that can check multiple threats, such as Keldeo, Azumarill, and Clefable. It also has a good support movepool, with access to moves such as Rapid Spin and Toxic Spikes. Unfortunately, Tentacruel's walling capabilities are hindered a by lack of reliable recovery and weaknesses to common types, such as Ground and Electric. It also receives competition from other bulky Pokemon that share a type with it, such as Mega Venusaur, which has better mixed bulk and offensive stats; Rotom-W, which has access to Will-O-Wisp and is only weak to one type; and Starmie, which can also Rapid Spin but has reliable recovery and a better Speed.

Physically Defensive
########
name: Physically Defensive
move 1: Scald
move 2: Rapid Spin
move 3: Acid Spray
move 4: Sludge Bomb / Knock Off
ability: Liquid Ooze / Rain Dish
item: Black Sludge
evs: 224 HP / 252 Def / 32 Spe
nature: Bold

Moves
========

Scald is Tentacruel's main STAB move; its burn chance helps Tentacruel check and deter physical attackers. Rapid Spin clears entry hazards from your side of the field. Acid Spray lets Tentacruel check Calm Mind sweepers, such as Clefable and Suicune, by lowering their Special Defense so that they can be easily revenge killed or taken down by Tentacruel itself. Sludge Bomb can be used as a reliable secondary STAB move that lets Tentacruel check Azumarill and Clefable more easily, whilst Knock Off provides nice support and hits Gengar harder than Scald, which is useful for when it tries to spinblock Tentacruel.

Set Details
========

32 Speed EVs let Tentacruel outspeed Jolly Tyranitar, while the rest of the EVs are dumped into Defense and HP to increase its physical bulk as much as possible. Black Sludge is Tentacruel's only source of recovery and can cripple Trick users. Liquid Ooze is the preferred ability, punishing Leech Seed and Giga Drain users. Rain Dish can be used on rain teams for more recovery.

Usage Tips
========

Tentacruel has the bulk to take most neutral attacks, but it prefers to switch into resisted hits due to its lack of reliable recovery. After switching in, you should either try to burn the opponent with Scald or use Rapid Spin if entry hazards are present. Before using Rapid Spin, check if the opponent has any Ghost-type Pokemon to spinblock Tentacruel. When they do, attacking might be the best option in order to hit the Ghost-type on the switch. Tentacruel should switch in against Calm Mind sweepers in order to lower their Special Defense with Acid Spray.

Team Options
========

Due to its lack of reliable recovery, Tentacruel appreciates Wish support from the likes of Chansey and Clefable. Ferrothorn resists Electric and Psychic, and Celebi resists all three of Tentacruel's weaknesses and can provide Heal Bell support, whilst Tentacruel also resists both Ferrothron's weaknesses and three of Celebi's: Bug, Poison, and Fire. Tentacruel fits well on stall teams, as it can beat common threats to stall such as Calm Mind Clefable and Keldeo. It also has good defensive synergy with Gliscor, which is immune to both Ground and Electric, whilst Tentacruel resists both Ice and Water.

Other Options
########

Toxic can be used to help stall the opponent; similarly, Toxic Spikes can do so for an entire team, but it is less reliable due to the prevalence of hazard control and Poison-types. Ice Beam hits Dragon- and Flying-types, such as Garchomp and Mandibuzz, for super effective damage. Haze can be used to stop set up setup sweepers, while Mirror Coat punishes special attackers that do not OHKO Tentacruel. Finally, Rain Dance supports Tentacruel's team and gives it passive recovery via Rain Dish. A specially defensive spread can be used to check Pokemon such as Greninja and Gengar.

Checks & Counters
########

**Electric-types**: Electric-type Pokemon, such as Thundurus and Mega Manectric, can switch in on Tentacruel and deal heavy damage with their STAB moves, but they do not want to take too many Scalds or Sludge Bombs. However, Rotom-W resists Water and is fairly bulky, so it can easily switch in.

**Psychic-types**: Mega Medicham, Mega Gardevoir, and other Psychic-types can threaten Tentacruel with their STAB moves. Latios and Latias resist Water and can recover back any health lost.

**Ground-types**: Ground-types dislike switching in on a possible Scald, but Pokemon like Excadrill and Landorus-I can easily KO Tentacruel with a bit of previous damage.

**Water-types**: Other than a Scald burn, Water-type Pokemon such as Manaphy and Starmie completely wall Tentacruel. Notably, Gastrodon is immune to Water and resists Poison, so it can easily switch in.

**Special Walls**: Specially bulky Pokemon such as Chansey can easily switch in and take little damage from Tentacruel's attacks, even after Acid Spray's Special Defense drops.

**Setup Sweepers**: Boosted attacks, such as Mega Pinsir's Return and Mega Heracross's Rock Blast, can KO Tentacruel after a little chip damage. All Tentacruel can do to respond is fish for a Scald burn; as such, sweepers immune to burns, such as Mega Charizard X and Substitute Gyarados, can use it as setup fodder.

I've heard they're short of room in hell
Is there some special reason for Rain Dance? Using a turn to get 6% hp when you could be using knock off, toxic, or toxic spikes, fishing for a scald burn, pressuring the opponent by lowering their special defense.. Wouldnt Giga Drain return more health per turn on average even? Tentacruel's passive nature doesn't really fit that well with rain teams, unless hyper modern variations are more stalling now?

If the point is to remove the opponent's sand you should probably mention that.

I think it is mainly for rain teams, getting extra health is just a nice side effect (CTC built a good one with tentacruel on his thread). I didn't think about it removing opposing weather either, i'll add that :)

You should slash slash sludge bomb next to rain dance as it lets you beat clefable after lowering the spdef as well as damages Azumarill. I think Knock Off deserves a main slash as well (4th slot) and rain dance in other options. don't forget to post why

yea ive been using this more and sludge is rly valuable for clef, azu, and actually damaging stuff eg keld, latis on switch for however much damage in general. sludge / knock sounds good.

Ok, I have been paying with CTC's rain team (which is why rain dance was suggested) and it is only useful for rain teams. I, also, feel that sludge bomb would be nice, for switch ins and substitues (0spatk sludge bomb has about 50% chance to break mild kyubs sub- just an example). It also allows it to beat clef with much more hp left over while 2hko standard azu. I havent yet tried knock off but i can imagine it being helpful vs bulkier teams (otherwise is sleep fodder vs stall).

I will add these and try out knock off (even on a rain team, i never get the time/barely get the need to use rain dance, especcially with a toed on my team)

Liquid Ooze should be the first slash on abilities, it allows you to turn the opponent's Giga Drain and Leech Seed against them. Rain Dish is much more situational, and usually not worth it.

Seeing as Tentacruel can counter Greninja and LO Gengar, both big threats to defensive teams, maybe a SpD spread deserves a Set Details mention? Also, with Liquid Ooze, Tentacruel can fuck up Mega Venusaur pretty nicely, tanking Giga Drain pretty comfortably, and staying in until it can burn it with Scald.

Team options need a lot of work ( talk more about synergy, wish mons mentioned stupidly and twice, consolidate and clarify)

So does c and c. Don't forget about sludge bomb and acid spray. Make double sure you're right.

Comments:

Tenta can realistically take down cm mons, espc. Clef, by itself, espc. w/ sludge bomb.

If you want to talk about grassed in team options, just mention them all, srsly.

Ofc prevalence of msaur basically ruins tspike utility, worth noting.

Sludge Bomb can be used as a reliable secondary STAB move that lets you check Azumarill and Clefable more easily, whilst Knock Off provides nice support and hits Gengar fohar more damager than Scald, which is useful for when it tries to spinblock Tentacruel.

Set Details
========

32 Speed EVs let Tentacruel outspeed Jolly Tyranitar, while the rest iof the EVs are dumped into Defense and HP to increase its physical bulk as much as possible. Black Sludge is Tentacruel's only source of recovery and can cripple Trick users. Liquid Ooze is the preferred ability, deterrpunishing Leech Seed and Giga Drain, whilst Rain Dish can be used on a rain team for more recovery.

Usage Tips
========

Tentacruel has the bulk to take most neutral attacks, but it prefers to switch into resisted hits due to its lack of reliable recovery. After switching in, you should either try to burn the opponent with Scald, or use Rapid Spin if entry hazards are present. Before using Rapid Spin, check if the opponent has any Ghost-type Pokemon to spinblock Tentacruel; if so, attacking might be the best option in order to hit them on the switch. Tentacruel should switch in against Calm Mind sweepers, in order to constantly lower their Special Defense with Acid Spray.

Team Options
========

Due to its lack of reliable recovery, Tentacruel appreciates Wish support from the likes of Sylveon and Clefable. Grass-Types resist two of Tentacruels weaknesses: Electric and Ground. Of these, Ferrothorn resists Electric and Psychic and Celebi resists all three of Tentacruel's weaknesses. Tentacruel fits well on stall teams, as it can beat common threats to stall such as Calm Mind Clefable and Keldeo, whilst common stall Pokemon such as Chansey can provide Wish support. It also has good defensive synergy with Gliscor, which is immune to both Ground and Electric, whilst Tentacruel resists Ice and Water.

Other Options
########

Toxic can be used to help stall the opponent.; Ssimilarly, Toxic Spikes affectan do so for thean entire team, but it is less reliable due to the prevalence of hazard control and Poison-types. Ice Beam hits Dragon- and Flying-Types, such as Garchomp and Mandibuzz, for super effective damage. Other options include Haze, which can be used to stop set up sweepers, while Mirror Coat, which punishes special attackers, and Rain Dance, which can be used to supports Tentacruel's team whileand providinges passive recovery via Rain Dish.

**Psychic-types**: Mega Medicham, Mega Gardevoir, and other Psychic-types can also threaten Tentacruel with their STAB moves.

Thanks and implemented

Regarding comments. Grass types arent too common. I have mentioned two which synergies well, whilst other relevant grass types are mega venusaur, which shares a type and a weakness, breloom and chesnaught, who also share a weakness.
