These two Pokemon should be implemented on the server and available for playtesting soon! In the meantime, feel free to discuss the new spreads, and their potential influence on the metagame.
Note that changes to the spreads can still be made, if found necessary by common consensus.
  • How viable are the newly introduced Pokemon?
  • Can the sample sets still be refined, and are there other sets that could be added?
  • What would be effective partners for these Pokemon?
  • How does the metagame adapt around the new threats?

Discussion will continue until 11.12.15, after which we'll begin with our next fossil Pokemon! ;)

If we go with this, I think Assault Vest could probably even take the first slash, as RegenVest is a very potent combo and Armaldo has the movepool that is very compatible with Assault Vest (mainly U-Turn, Knock Off, and Rapid Spin). Even Water Absorb works decently well with Assault Vest.

I honestly am in love with Kabutops now. Now that it has access to Technician, U-turn, AND Bug Bite, I think that is becomes a lot better as a Pokemon.

A set that I thought of with Kabutops is:

Kabutops @ Life Orb
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant / Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- U-turn
- Aqua Jet
- Bug Bite

Technician (obviously) boosts Aqua Jet and Bug Bite for Kabutops. The EVs are used to maximize Kabutops's Attack and Speed stats so that it can damage as hard as possible and outspeed as many Pokemon as possible. The Natures are interchangeable between Adamant and Jolly. Adamant makes Kabutops hit harder, but it means that Kabutops won't be as fast as it can be. Jolly means that Kabutops can't hit as hard, but it is recommended over Adamant, as it allows Kabutops to outspeed as many Pokemon as possible. Swords Dance is used to make up for Jolly nature over Adamant (and then some). U-turn allows Kabutops to gain momentum against the opposing team. Aqua Jet and Bug Bite are used to allow Kabutops to hit as hard as possible when used in tandem with Technician, STAB, and +2 Attack thanks to Swords Dance.

Alright, so I had the chance to try out Armaldo and Kabutops for a bit, and both did really well in battle so far. Kabutops might be a bit more match-up reliant since it has a fair share of counters that can prevent it from doing much, but once those are gone it can usually clean up the remaining team fairly easily.
Both Armaldo and Kabutops work together remarkably well, wearing down their defensive answers while only sharing a weakness to Flying types. Armaldo reliably deals with the Electric types which threaten Kabutops, who in turn sets up on the Fire, Ice and Water types which force out Armaldo.

Mega Gyarados is a great partner for both of them, since it appreciates the hazard removal and free switch-ins by a slow U-Turn provided by Armaldo, and Kabutops' ability to lure and weaken their mutual counters such as Ferrothorn, Chesnaught and Garchomp. It also deals with opposing Kabutops and Armaldo very effectively, setting up on the former while hitting the latter with a super effective Water STAB regardless of Water Absorb.

Flying types in general benefit very much from the introduction of Kabutops and Armaldo, so Rotom-W and Skarmory were included to reliably deal with them while providing utility with Will-O-Wisp and Stealth Rock, respectively. Finally, Talonflame is a good offensive check to opposing Kabutops who might have been able to set up a Sword Dance boost, and also covers Fairy types such as Mega Altaria and Clefable who would otherwise prove troublesome for the team.

Code:
Armaldo @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe

Kabutops @ Lum Berry

This battle shows the effectiveness of Assault Vest Armaldo and SD Kabutops against balanced teams quite nicely. Between U-Turn and Volt Switch, Kabutops can usually find an opportunity to set up rather easily, due to its decent bulk and useful defensive typing. Since the opposing teams didn't really have anything to deal with a +2 Kabutops, a single turn of set-up was all that was needed for a sweep.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/aqua-thelostworld-978
This is a match against a defensive OU team, which wasn't specifically prepared for the new threats, yet managed to take on both of them quite competently. The presence of Skarmory and Mega Altaria on the opposing team prevented Kabutops from doing much at all, while the rest of the team limited the switch-in opportunities for Armaldo with the threat of super-effective damage and status. The critical hit on Slowbro was quite crucial in the match, since it eventually opened the way for a late Talonflame sweep.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/aqua-thelostworld-1103
Assault Vest Armaldo can be quite an effective lead, since it deals with most opposing hazard setters and oftentimes manages to keep the field clear of hazards for its teammates. Talonflame missing its Will-O-Wisp was unfortunate for my opponent, since I don't really have anything to take it on my team, and the passive damage would have put a lot more pressure on my Flying type checks. As before, Kabutops couldn't really do much early game due to the threat of priority Brave Bird preventing it from setting up.

CHRISTMAS SPECIAL | Submissions

Aurorus
Original typing:

Original stats: 123 / 77 / 72 / 99 / 92 / 58 (BST 521)
Original abilities: Refrigerate / Snow Warning

Hey everyone, welcome to the second submission stage in this project!

Today's slate features Aurorus, a very unique Pokemon among the fossil roster. Though it is mostly known for its two excellent abilities, Aurorus does have an interesting movepool to work with especially in the specially offensive department, including options such as Freeze Dry, Frost Breath, Earth Power and Discharge, which can hit a huge part of OU for good damage. Note that Aurorus will be competing directly with Kyurem when going the route of a defensive Ice-type and wallbreaker, so a higher power level might be required to turn it into a top threat.

When making a submission, please factor in the following criteria:
  • Flavor: Any changes should be sensible with the original concept and design of the Pokemon.
  • Competitiveness: The goal is to make each Pokemon a top threat by OU standards (S/A-rank).
  • Originality: Avoid making the Pokemon too similar to current OU threats and previously winning entries.
Try to be as explicit as possible with your justification, so other people can follow your thought process more easily.
Feedback and constructive criticism for others is very appreciated, in case you feel that certain aspects of their submission could use a more thorough reasoning. Make sure to be specific though, and give them a chance to explain the rational behind their decisions.

Abilities: Refrigerate / Magic Guard
Movepool additions: Recover / Trick Room / Surf

Niche in the metagame: With its incredible 140/95/120 bulk, now Aurorus can deal with some of the nastiest special attackers in OU, such as Latios, MegaZam, Keldeo, Mega Gardevoir and Serperior. Thanks to the ability to set its own TR, now it can revert the enemy's Speed boosts against itself. Both its abilities can help it a lot, either boosting its attacks with Refrigerate or preventing it from taking damage from hazards and statuses. Its STABs combination can allow it to hit supereffectively many strong threat of the actual metagame, including Thundurus, Zapdos, Gengar, Venusaur (either normal or megaevolved), Garchomp and even less frequent mons like Dragonite and Nidoking. It can work also as a supporter: it can set hazards, TR, Screens and spread paralysis and has a reliable recovery. At last, Surf can help it to deal with some of its weaknesses (Rock- and Fire-types).

formerly The Reptile

Typing:

Stats: 128 (+5) / 87 (+10) / 92 (+20) / 114 (+15) / 117 (+25) / 63 (+5) [BST 600]
Abilities: Refrigerate / Snow Warning
Movepool additions: Volt Switch / Wild Charge / Wish

Niche in the metagame: This Aurorus is a very strange one. While it has insane bulk in 128/92/117, it's typing kind of holds it back due to the common weaknesses that Ice has, along with a new weakness to Ground. Meanwhile, Ice / Electric would be an insane STAB combo but it is held back by its low-ish speed. Still, Aurorus has good things going for it. For one, it resists BoltBeam meaning it, which is a nice asset to have. While it doesn't have that many resists, what resists it does have are pretty good. Aside from BoltBeam, it also resists Flying which is a neat little resist to have.

While it doesn't have reliable recovery, it has Wish Protect as a way to heal itself and its teammates. With 128 HP, those are some big wishes. Not only that, but Aurorus also have Volt Switch to safety bring in something thanks to its low speed. What really makes Aurorus shine is its abilities - Refrigerate makes its Ice STAB hit harder than 114 would lead you to believe while Snow Warning lets it get residual damage and also kind of powers up its Ice STAB in the sense that it can use Blizzard. On a lesser note, while I don't think Aurorus is going to make Hail teams viable by itself, it is definitely a good boost to them.

Aurorus:

Typing:

Stats: 150 (+27) / 77 / 78 (+6) / 113 (+14) / 100 (+8) / 82 (+24)
Abilities: Mold Breaker / Multiscale
Movepool additions: Spikes / Recover / Power Gem

Niche in the metagame: Aurorus, thanks to its new Ice / Ground typing, can work as an amazing special wall / pivot against a lot of special attackers such as non-Calm Mind Clefable, Specially Biased Kyurem-B, Manaphy, Mega Diancie, Raikou, Rotom-Wash, Slowbro, Starmie, Thundurus, and Life Orb Tornadus-T. It also even tanks some physical attacks with investment such as +1 Adamant Mega Altaria's Pixilate-boosted Return if Stealth Rock isn't up, Mega Pinsir's Close Combat, non-Life Orb Bisharp's Iron Head, and any move Tyranitar normally runs. Mold Breaker provides an amazing utility ability as it allows Aurorus to Earth Power Rotom-W while also being able to set up Spikes much easier. Mold Breaker also gets past Mega Venusaur's Thick Fat, which would allow Mega Venusaur to win 1v1. Multiscale is a really nice ability as well since with Aurorus' new typing and decent bulk, it can tank any one super effective hit and proceed to fire back with a powerful STAB Freeze-Dry (against Water-, Flying-, and Grass-types) or Earth Power (against Fire- and Steel-types). Multiscale is proven even more effective thanks to it now gaining access to Recover, meaning it can reactivate its Multiscale multiple times throughout the match. Spikes gives Aurorus a less prominent entry hazard to lay down and is able to carve a niche over other Spikes setters such as Ferrothorn and Armaldo thanks to Mold Breaker, which allows Aurorus an easier time setting up Spikes against Magic Bounce users since they cannot bounce back the Spikes like they can against Ferrothorn or Armaldo (although Ferrothorn and Armaldo can threaten Mega Diancie with super effective STAB). It also fits better as a team's Ground type because the only Ground-type Spike user in the metagame, Armaldo, has an arguably worse offensive typing, making Aurorus a better offensive Spiker while also providing utility thanks to Mold Breaker. That is not to say that Aurorus is just delegated to being a defensive pivot as with its base 113 Special Attack and 82 Speed, it can be amazing cleaner with its natural access to Rock Polish and amazing neutral STAB coverage. Power Gem gives such sets a way around some checks such as Talonflame and a special variant of EdgeQuake coverage, which is amazing neutral coverage alongside its Ice-type STAB. A bulky Calm Mind set can also be used as it has great neutral STAB coverage and access to reliable recovery; however, it is very susceptible to status which ends up making Multiscale null and void.

Ice/Ground idea super greninja'd by NV. Still gonna try it.

Typing : Ice / Ground
Stats 123(+7)/77(+3)/72(+13)/99(+12)/92(+30)/58(+4) -> 130/80/85/111/122/62 [BST:600]
Abilities : Refrigerate / Regenerator
Movepool Additions : Wish / Heal Bell / Baton Pass
Justification : Aururos always looked like a support Pokemon, from its stats to its movepool. Unfortunately Ice sucks defensively, so I decided to focus on balancing it out (a bit). Ice/Ground is a stellar offensive typing, having almost perfect neutral coverage. Its stats are very balanced, having great 130/95/122 bulk, while having OK 111 special attack. I even gave it enough speed to outspeed TTar if running similar spreads. Due to having great coverage, I expounded on its supportive stats and gave it Wish and Heal Bell, to heal itself and teammates, and Baton Pass so it can gain momentum and safely bring in a teammate. Regenerator enables it to WishPass quite efficently, making it an even more effective cleric. It kept its original ability Refridgerate to provide it with powerful Hyper Voices, so the choice of abilities lie between power or longivity. Its a really balanced Pokemon that has a variety of sets.

Aurorus

Stats: 123+17 / 77+13 / 72+3 / 99+21 / 92+3 / 58+22 --> 140 / 90 / 75 / 120 / 95 / 80 (BST 600)
Abilities: Refrigerate / Pixilate
Movepool additions: Tail Glow / Play Rough / Moonblast

Niche in the metagame: While Kyurem-B is a very strong physical Dragon type, which sets a Substitute then begins a sweep with Dragon claw/Outrage and coverage options, sadly, without Ice STAB, Aurorus is a strong special Fairy type, which sets up Tail Glow and dominates everything with -ate boosted STAB Hyper Voice. It can go mixed with Play Rough, and also is unpredictable with both Refrigerate and Pixilate. Alternatively, it can run a Choice Scarf nicely with its 80 Speed and just delete everything from existence by clicking on HV. Its 80 Spe also allows it to outspeed a lot of different threats like TankChomp and non-speed-invested Lando-T/Gliscor while OHKO'ing them. This Aurorus outclasses a lot of other Tail Glow users: Manaphy for example has only 100 SpA and the best STAB it has is Scald, which is 80 BP before STAB, while Aurorus has Hyper-ate, which has 117 BP before STAB and also has a humongous 120 SpA. Aurorus can set up on a lot of Stallmons, to break them more easily later on. But this Pokemon is countered by nearly ALL Steel mons, making it non-OP.

Sample set(s):
Code:
Aurorus @ Life Orb
Ability: Refrigerate/Pixilate
EVs: 252 SpA/4 SpD/252 Spe
Timid Nature

- Moonblast/Ice beam (Moon if Refrigerate, Ice if Pixilate)

Abilities: Refrigerate / Magic Guard
Movepool additions: Psyshock, Recover, Icicle Crash

Niche in the metagame: With an Ice / Psychic typing, Aurorus would have a better coverage with its STAB moves, hitting Dragon-, Fighting-, Flying-, Grass-, Ground-, and Poison-type Pokemon for super effective STAB-boosted damage. In addition to this, Aurorus's new typing and defenses allow it to switch into and take a lot more hits from a more common range of Pokemon, such as Alakazam, Mega Alakazam, Celebi, Latias, Clefable, and Latios. With 137 / 107 / 107 bulk, Aurorus has an excuse for having low Speed and can live a lot more hits from both physical and special attackers. With 114 Special Attack, Aurorus can now hit more Pokemon for more damage and not have to be as worried about being KOed because of its bulk. With Refrigerate, Aurorus can have access to a wider range of stronger, STAB-boosted Ice-type moves. Alternatively, with Magic Guard, Aurorus can switch into Pokemon even when Stealth Rock and other entry hazards are up, making it more reliable for teams in general. This also means that Aurorus's bulk doesn't go to complete waste when used versus hazard setting teams. Psyshock allows Aurorus to have another STAB-boosted Psychic-type move that it can use to hit specially defensive or physically frail Pokemon such as Chansey and Keldeo. Recover provides Aurorus with a means of recovery for when it's using Refrigerate versus entry hazard setting teams, so that it doesn't faint so fast. Icicle Crash is for those gimmicky players that like to run unviable/goofy sets for random Pokemon. All of this means that Aurorus has a new intended role of a bulky special attacker. With this new typing, Aurorus hits less types super effectively, and it makes it gives Aurorus the same amount of weaknesses, making up for its newly found bulk. For example, Aurorus is now threatened by Bug-, Dark-, Fire-, and Ghost-types such as Scizor, Volcarona, Weavile, Hoopa-U, Bisharp, Talonflame, Mega Charizard Y, Heatran, Mega Sableye, and Gengar. However, this now means that Aurorus can now threaten Fighting- and Poison-types such as Chesnaught, Mega Lopunny, Keldeo, Nidoking, and the rare Crobat.

Sample set(s):

Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 244 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA / 8 SpD
Modest Nature

Niche in the metagame:
Aurorus' role in the metagame would to be a very powerful wallbreaker with Refrigerate-boosted Hyper Voices and 130 Special Attack. Not much would like to switch in to this monster, bar incredibly bulky things such as Chansey. Ice-Fairy is generally a pretty good offensive typing, but with both STABs being walled by the ever-present Steel types, it would balance out. Granted, it is a terrible defensive typing, weak to common types such as Steel and Fire as well as some less common types such as Rock and Poison. Moonblast is an obligatory STAB move, and I think it is justified by the fact that it only evolves at night. Moonlight is a recovery move that, along with good 123 / 90 / 110 bulk with Intimidate, allows Aurorus to survive awhile. I think the best set would probably be Rock Polish, becuase once it got set up, it would tear through offensive teams which are everywhere rn. The other sets are mostly self-explanatory.

Abilities: Magic Guard / Sheer Force
Movepool additions: Volt Switch / Wish / Power Gem

Niche in the metagame:

With access to Magic Guard and STAB Volt Switch, Aurorus carves out a unique niche as an Ice type which can switch around and provide momentum throughout the game as an offensive pivot. Ice / Electric is a great offensive typing which allows Aurorus to exert immediate pressure especially against defensive teams, while taking advantage of opposing switches with Volt Switch. A base Speed of 85 ensures that Aurorus can outspeed most defensive threats, and max speed Bisharp and Breloom even with a Modest nature, while its base Special Attack stat of 120 in combination with a potential recoilfree Life Orb boost back up its already decently powerful STAB attacks. Aurorus' secondary ability Sheer Force sacrifices longevity and the ability to switch around freely for an even greater power boost, and takes good advantage of its most commonly used moves (Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Earth Power). With Sheer Force, this Aurorus is somewhat comparable to OU Theorymon Kyurem, making up for the slightly lower power and speed with its useful secondary typing and a generally better special movepool.

Wish and Power Gem are both reasonable options on Aurorus, though they face rather strong competition for a moveslot by the more standard options. Wish works well with Aurorus' respectable bulk and immunity to passive damage, turning it into a potent stallbreaker which can easily deal with weaker attacks and pass huge Wishes to its teammates. Power Gem on the other hand can be run as an additional coverage move on Aurorus in order to deal with threats such as Kyurem-B, Charizard X and Volcarona more effectively, should they prove to be especially problematic for the team.

Abilities: Refrigerate/Drought
Movepool additions: Weather Ball/ Solar Beam/ Overheat

Niche in the metagame: The biggest niche this Pokemon has is it Typing, which will be completely unique in this metagame otherwise, Offensively it STAB hits Super Effective on Ice, Steel, Grass, Dragon, Flying, Ground and Bug, and Takes half damage on Grass, Fairy, and Bug + gets 4x Resist on Ice. It's weaknesses are 4x Rock (In hich it gets coverage by Flash Cannon or Solar Beam) and 2x on Ground, Water, and Fighting. It also notably plays an interesting sun mon by both stabs hitting Grass-type (which can take advantage of the sun) and 2 of Sun boosted Fire move Resistant Types(Dragon and Water) Super Effective. Along with its nice bulk and SpAtk stat comes its Trick Room viability with its Speed Stat, while not very common in the OU metagame, It can play the role of a heavy hitting Choice Spec player nicely (in other works a great asset to a Trick Room team) and could even use weather ball on that set and be put into weather teams. Its also counters Hail teams very well. Also can have Calm Mind and Rock Polish for Set up sets.

CHRISTMAS SPECIAL | Voting

Alright everyone, we've had a very nice range of submission this time round with lots of different and interesting types to choose from! Below are the entries that are eligible for the poll, be sure to read through their justifications carefully, since they are an integral part of the submissions and show the level of thought put into them!

Stats: 140 / 77 / 95 / 110 / 120 / 58
Abilities: Refrigerate, Magic Guard
Movepool additions: Recover, Trick Room, Surf

Stats: 128 / 86 / 92 / 114 / 117 / 63
Abilities: Refrigerate, Snow Warning
Movepool additions: Volt Switch, Wild Charge, Wish

Stats: 150 / 77 / 78 / 113 / 100 / 82
Abilities: Mold Breaker, Multiscale
Movepool additions: Spikes, Recover, Power Gem

Abilities: Refrigerate, Regenerator
Movepool additions: Wish, Heal Bell, Baton Pass

Niche in the metagame: Aururos always looked like a support Pokemon, from its stats to its movepool.

Abilities: Refrigerate, Pixilate
Movepool additions: Tail Glow, Play Rough, Moonblast

Abilities: Refrigerate, Magic Guard

Stats: 123 / 77 / 90 / 130 / 110 / 70
Abilities: Refrigerate, Intimidate
Movepool additions: Moonblast, Moonlight, Power Gem

Niche in the metagame: Aurorus' role in the metagame would to be a very powerful wallbreaker with Refrigerate-boosted Hyper Voices and 130 Special Attack.

Stats: 125 / 90 / 80 / 120 / 100 / 85
Abilities: Magic Guard, Sheer Force
Movepool additions: Volt Switch, Wish, Power Gem

Niche in the metagame: With access to Magic Guard and STAB Volt Switch, Aurorus carves out a unique niche as an Ice type which can switch around and provide momentum throughout the game as an offensive pivot.

Stats: 133 / 79 / 92 / 146 / 92 / 58
Abilities: Refrigerate, Drought
Movepool additions: Weather Ball, Solar Beam, Overheat

I just don't really like the Idea of having an Ice- and Fire-type Pokemon. Aurorus doesn't really fit the role of a Ice / Fire attacker or defensive mon to me tbh. (Also, Droughts and auroras dont fit together really)

A few spreads seem to suffer a bit too much from the combination of low speed, exploitable weaknesses and vulnerability to entry hazards, unfortunately.
