Bulky Substitute Mega Metagross

Metagross @ Metagrossite
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 192 HP / 232 Atk / 84 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Meteor Mash
- Zen Headbutt
- Substitute
- Earthquake

The idea behind this sst is to use Substitute in order to block status, particularly from Rotom-W, and evade Sucker Punches from Bisharp. Substitute also helps ease prediction and scout Choice-Locked Pokemon, for instance, it forces Scarf Landorus-T to lock itself into Earthquake which is very useful. The reason for the heavy HP investment is that you want to prevent Rotom-W from breaking your Substitute with a Volt Switch, which 192 HP EVs enables you to do (yeah, it could Hydro Pump, but it probably won't for fear of missing, imagining Volt Switch will just break the sub).

84 Speed EVs enables you to outspeed Adamant Excadrill out of sand, as well as Mews speed creeping Adamant Excadrill, which is important since it enables you to Sub on them for free instead of being burnt. Remaining EVs in Attack with an adamant nature for obvious reasons. I guess you could run Jolly and Max Speed, but at that point, you sacrifice a huge amount of power which doesn't really seem worth it, so you're better off just going the bulky attacker route.

By the way, the reason it runs EQ is that, since Substitute already blocks Ferrothorn's Leech Seed, you're actually better off hitting it with that in order to block Iron Barbs damage, so Hammer Arm isn't needed for anything on that particular set (bar random Balloon/Shuca steels)

Have you ever got to the end of a teambuild with Mega Metagross only to realise you forgot to put a rocker on your team and need it to score some extra KOs? Don't worry, because Metagross gets this move just like the too-many-other-users do! The moves used have been chosen to allow for the best matchup versus common opposing rockers, with Ice Punch nailing Garchomp and Lando-T, Grass Knot nailing Hippowdon and Hammer Arm nailing Heatran.

Sleep Talk Mega Metagross

Metagross @ Metagrossite
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Meteor Mash
- Dynamic Punch/Power-Up Punch

General idea: Here we have a classic Sleep Talk set which uses Rest to get rid of status (mainly burn, but even paralysis is bad for this Mega) and recover HP. Sleep Talk allows us to use one of the other moves with perfect accuracy without wasting their PP. The moves are Meteor Mash which is the STAB which can boost the Atk and Dynamic Punch which has a good side-effect OR PuP, which is good when you reach +2 in Atk.

Teammates support: Gravity Landorus-T is a good option to rely on Dynamic Punch even outside the Sleep Talk strategy due its sheer power and effect. This is a late game cleaner set which works when its checks are at low health and are unable to break through Mega Metagross defences in 2 turns after which MM can use Rest againg.

EVs spread: it is the basic spread.

Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 160 HP / 252 Atk / 96 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Meteor Mash
- Bullet Punch
- Hammer Arm
- Ice Punch / Zen Headbutt / Pursuit

This is a tankier version of the standard all-out attacking set. By investing into HP over speed, Mega Meta trades a wonderful speed tier for the ability to take advantage of its great 80/150/110 bulk better and also get a tad more damage output with an Adamant nature. As a slower and stronger set, Bullet Punch becomes even more useful than on the standard one and Hammer Arm isn't quite as affected by the speed drop. Pursuit benefits for similar reasons.

The set makes a great check for Clef, Mega Alt, Latis, Breloom, Mega Sceptile and others. This set outspeeds Timid/Jolly Heatran and Diggersby and Adamant Excadrill outside of sand, but 120 HP / 252 Atk / 136 Spe is good to outspeed Mild Kyurem-B.

Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 240 Atk / 16 SpA / 252 Spe

- Meteor Mash
- Icy Wind
- Grass Knot / Earthquake
- Thunder Punch

Ok so like, you know all those times when you're using Mega Metagross and you go, "Damn. I wish I wouldn't take so much damage hitting that Garchomp!" or "This shitass Skarmory pisses me off." Well with this set you bypass a lot of your would be counters ez. Thunder Punch gives you the ability to screw over Specially Defensive Skarmory 100% of time. No more shall it switch into you with impunity since you can actually KO that bastard. Grass Knot is Grass Knot and allows you to break past fat shit like Slowbro and Hippowdon so they won't just eat up your moves. If you don't really care for that then EQ or Hammer Arm would be the better option. This is where it gets really fun. Icy Wind is actually the based move. For those who don't know it lowers your foes speed by a whole stage making offensive switch-in's and revenge kills to this monster far and in between. Know how I said you take a metric shitload of damage from hitting Chomp? Or even Lando? Well with Icy Wind you not only slow them down, you also cleanly 2HKO both after Stealth Rock.

Band Explosion
376.gif

Metagross @ Choice Band
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 144 HP / 224 Atk / 140 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Meteor Mash
- Hammer Arm / Earthquake
- Thunder Punch
- Explosion

Band Explosion Metagross is an excellent partner for pokemon such as Excadrill, Charizard-X, Bisharp and Talonflame, who struggle against bulky pokemon such as Landorus-T, Rotom-W, Garchomp, and Ferrothorn. I like to pair this Metagross set up with obvious mega's, such as Lopunny and Charizard-X, so people suspect you are AV Metagross and use for example Rotom-W as their Metagross check. It can work both as a wallbreaker by punching holes with Banded Meteor Mash and good coverage, or explode early game to give other wallbreakers a much easier time throughout the match. Hammer Arm / Earthquake kinda depends on what you want to lure; Hammer Arm is nice to lure in Ferrothorn, while Earthquake is the better option against Jirachi, opposing Metagross and electric types (although Hammer Arm already does a lot to both Raikou and Manectric). The last slot is also pretty much whatever fits your team best. I like Thunder Punch most to lure in Slowbro and Skarmory, because I have used this on a team with Excadrill and Charizard-X, but other options such as Ice Punch and Zen Headbutt are perfectly fine too (I didn't want to put too many slashes in the set). The EV spread allows Metagross to survive a scarfed Earthquake from Landorus-T, and OHKO it with Explosion. Enough speed for 8 speed Rotom-W so you can either take away at least half its health with Zen Headbutt, or outright defeat it with Explosion. Remaining EVs in attack for the best damage output.
I guess Trick is also a viable option over either Thunder Punch or Explosion, but I have never played with it and someone already reserved that set but I will try that out someday.

224+ Atk Choice Band Metagross Thunder Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 156-184 (46.7 - 55%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
224+ Atk Choice Band Metagross Thunder Punch vs. 252 HP / 232+ Def Slowbro: 188-222 (47.7 - 56.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
224+ Atk Choice Band Metagross Explosion vs. 0 HP / 24 Def Landorus-T: 481-566 (150.7 - 177.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
224+ Atk Choice Band Metagross Explosion vs. 252 HP / 164+ Def Garchomp: 364-429 (86.6 - 102.1%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
224+ Atk Choice Band Metagross Explosion vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Rotom-W: 311-366 (102.6 - 120.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

224+ Atk Choice Band Metagross Explosion vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Suicune: 296-349 (73.2 - 86.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
224+ Atk Choice Band Metagross Explosion vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 362-426 (91.8 - 108.1%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Hone Claws Metagross

metagross-mega.gif

Metagross-Mega @ Metagrossite
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Hone Claws
- Hammer Arm / Dynamic Punch
- Meteor Mash
- Zen Headbutt

Hone Claws is pretty cool on Metagross, as most of its common moves have imperfect accuracy. Hone Claws is also very useful because it lets Metagross muscle past some of its supposed checks like Celebi or Skarm lacking Whirlwind. This set puts in the most work against more passive builds like stall which lets it set up most easily (immunity to clear smog helps with this), but is by no means dead weight vs offense as 3 move coverage is still good. It can effectively destroy everything that doesn't resist all its moves at +1 because of its massive attack stat combined with tough claws. You can also run dynamic punch to try and take advantage of the accuracy boost from hone claws, but it requires 2 turns of setup to be effective, and the tradeoff in consistency is questionably worthwhile.

Careful Nature

- Toxic / Zen Headbutt

The premise here is kind of like a reverse Calm Mind Pokemon, where we usually buff up their defense stat and let Calm Mind do the rest. This is the opposite. Rest is there to account for Metagross' lack of recovery, not so much for a RestTalk set. The idea is to get an Iron Defense up before having to Rest, that way both defenses are as high as can be.

I recognize this set has counters like Bisharp, but none of them are perfect right?

That person was me btw. I don't think it's effective as it was now considering surprise factor is not necessarily a point in M-Gross excels at now a days. It's a cute set but I wouldn't really recommend it these days. Good for brainstorming though.

-Magic- I've used your set in the past on multiple occassions, the Icy Wind variant. I think by the time you use 3 lures on M-Gross it's time to get a partner to cover something else. It's hard to justify a M-Gross that has a moveset that is totally troubled by Bisharp or doesnt have Earthquake or Hammer Arm for coverage. Seems more appropriate to mention Icy Wind is the main function, cause the other lures are not really a surprise unless you're a novice builder these days.

SketchUp Using a choiced Metagross sort of mandates Trick. I did read the sentence at the end so I'm aware about the reserve but if you were to ever make a serious build or at least something semi-decent it's much more than a "I guess" choice. Figured I would mention that seeing as I've used both a Band and scarf variant in the past for testing purposes.

A lot of these as usual are sort of nonsense but thought I would mention some points about ones I'm familiar with.

Magnet Rise Mega Metagross

metagross-mega.gif

Metagross-Mega @ Metagrossite
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Magnet Rise
- Meteor Mash
- Ice Punch / Hammer Arm
- Grass Knot

This set is designed to beat Bulky Ground types much more easily. With Magnet Rise, most ground types will be walled by Metagross due to the lack of a second super effective attack. Meteor Mash is standard on Mega Metagross, hitting a lot of things hard thanks to STAB and Tough Claws. Ice Punch and Grass Knot destroy pretty much every Ground type in the tier, with Ice Punch OHKOing Landorus, Gliscor and Garchomp and Grass Knot 2HKOing Hippowdon and OHKOing Quagsire. Hammer Arm is slashed if you want to be able to hit Ferrothorn and Heatran, as Gliscor and Landorus can still be beaten by Meteor Mash thanks to Magnet Rise.

This set not only does well against ground types, but also does well against threats such as M-Diancie, Slowbro and M-Slowbro and variants of Dragonite such as CB. Metagross 2HKOs Slowbro with Grass Knot and M-Diancie can barely touch Metagross when Magnet Rise is set up, though HP Fire variants could be troublesome.

The moveset can be adjusted to fit your teams needs/preferences so using Zen Headbutt, Thunderpunch, Bullet Punch, Pursuit or Earthquake is fine, but make sure you keep at least one of Ice Punch or Grass Knot so you can beat whichever ground types the move can deal with and use the move that checks ground types you struggle with more. If your team struggles with Gliscor, Landorus and Garchomp more, use Ice Punch. If your team struggles with Hippowdon and Quagsire more, use Grass Knot.

Good partners to this set are essentially anything that struggles with the aforementioned threats, so partners such as Scizor, Talonflame, Landorus-T, Jirachi and Excadrill will work well. The first 4 partners suggested can also use U-Turn to pivot into Metagross when they switch their ground type into you, allowing you to mega evolve and set up with Magnet Rise and threaten them. You will obviously have to watch out for potential fast variants of Gliscor, Landorus and Garchomp as they can outspeed before you mega and KO or do serious damage with EQ. Hippowdon and Quagsire are less worrying as they are really slow.

Metagross @ Life Orb
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 188 Atk / 232 SpA / 88 Spe
Naughty Nature (+Atk, -SpD)
IVs: 30 Def, 30 SpA, 30 Spe
- Meteor Mash
- Hidden Power Fire
- Grass Knot / Icy Wind
- Earthquake

I think the sheer number of sets posted is a testament to just how wide Metagross' movepool really is. This set capitalizes on Metagross' great typing that forces switches and tanks hits in addition to its potential insane coverage with an overlooked 95 SpA. This is what you wanna use if you want some Steel and physical wall hate. With this spread, Skarmory is always 2HKO'd by HP Fire without Stealth Rock, factoring in Leftovers recovery, and Slowbro is cleanly 2HKO'd under the same conditions. Mega Metagross can't do either of those things, even with Thunder Punch. Grass Knot also 2HKO's Hippowdon and nails the rare Quagsire, while HP Fire handily 2HKO's both Ferrothorn and Scizor as well. Meteor Mash brings in a strong, pretty reliable STAB that crushes Fairies like Clefable, while Earthquake rounds out coverage, making quick work of Heatran, Magnezone, Jirachi, rare Empoleon, and always KOs bulky Bisharp after SR if it tries to be ambitious or in dire situations. Icy Wind is an option if you'd rather handle Garchomp, Dragonite, Gliscor, and Landorus-T instead of the bulky Waters and Ground-types.

The Speed EVs are for ouspeeding everything up to support M-Altaria (and other uninvested base 80's) to KO it before it can use Earthquake or Fire Blast. Metagross also crucially outspeeds specially defensive Heatran and Mega Scizor. 232 SpA EV's guarantee the 2HKO on Slowbro and Skarmory as mentioned before, and makes Metagross' special moves sting a lot with base 95 SpA and Life Orb, much stronger than Mega Metagross. The rest is poured into Attack with a boosting nature to boost its best stat and allow Metagross to dish out heavy damage to everything it can usually handle with Meteor Mash or Earthquake. By comparison, Meteor Mash is roughly the same power as a max Attack M-Meta Meteor Mash, and Earthquake is noticeably stronger. One of the best parts is that you don't even have to use your Mega slot, at the cost of struggling against some faster threats.

188+ Atk Life Orb Metagross Meteor Mash vs. 248 HP / 104+ Def Mega Altaria: 315-374 (89.2 - 105.9%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO (Stealth Rock guarantees)
