SubPunch Tyranitar
248.gif

Tyranitar @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 192 Atk / 64 SpA
Brave Nature
- Substitute
- Focus Punch
- Crunch / Stone Edge
- Ice Beam

Tyranitar can set up a substitute against many pokemon like Heatran and Talonflame which gives you an opportunity to hit the incoming pokemon with a 150 BP move coming from a 134 atk stat. Crunch is for coverage which is only resisted by fairy types, though Stone Edge is also a great option as it gives you better neutral coverage. Ice Beam is to hit physical walls with enough SpA to OHKO Scarf Landorus-T and 2hko SpD Gliscor and 404 HP gives you 101 subs which helps against seismic toss users.

Calcs:
64 SpA Tyranitar Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-T: 320-380 (100.3 - 119.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
64 SpA Tyranitar Ice Beam vs. 244 HP / 192+ SpD Gliscor: 248-292 (70.4 - 82.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Poison Heal
192+ Atk Tyranitar Focus Punch vs. 248 HP / 216+ Def Rotom-W: 124-147 (40.9 - 48.5%) -- 69.5% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock, sandstorm damage, and Leftovers recovery
192+ Atk Tyranitar Focus Punch vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 336-396 (87 - 102.5%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Tyranitar @ Leftovers / Smooth Rock
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Stone Edge / Crunch / Pursuit
- Ice Beam
- Thunder Wave
- Dragon Tail / Roar

I used this set in a sand team near the end of XY and it worked pretty well. The point of the set was to be a nuisance and spread Paralysis everywhere while crippling offensive pokemon. Tyranitar has overlooked 100/110/100 bulk, which allows it to stick around for a while, while constantly screwing over the opponents momentum and crippling things. Stone Edge is Rock STAB and hits things like Charizard, Thundurus or Talonflame for SE damage while having great neutral coverage. Ice Beam is for pokemon like Landorus or Garchomp who can't be stopped with Thunder Wave and can OHKO them after SR damage (Naive Garchomp has a 68% chance). Crunch or Pursuit can be opted for over Stone Edge or Ice Beam as it allows Tyranitar to hit things like Lati@s, Starmie or Gengar much harder.

Curse Tyranitar
(Won't work for Mega)

Tyranitar @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Att / 4 SpA (These can be changed)
Brave Nature
- Curse
- Crunch
- Stone Edge
- Fire Blast

Tyranitar can use Curse to take advantage of its base 134 attack and base 110 defense, while Sandstorm buffs its base 100 special defense by 50 percent. Leftovers helps to heal off damage, and Curse adds that extra defense and power. Crunch and Stone Edge are two nice STABs for Tyranitar, as well as coverage. Fire Blast is there so that Ferrothorn doesn't wall you.

Specs Lure Tyranitar
Shiny_Tyranitar.png

Tyranitar @ Choice Specs
Ability: Sand Stream
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Dark Pulse
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt / Surf
- Fire Blast

Here's Specs Tyranitar. Lures in basically every usual T-Tar switch in and 2HKOs them. Dark Pulse is STAB and hits pretty hard, even off of 90 SpA. Ice Beam is for Gliscor and Landos, as well as Dragons. Thunderbolt can be used for an accurate way to hit Skarmory, as well as Azumarill and Keldeo, while Surf can be used to hit Diancie and Heatran for super effective damage. Finally, Fire Blast is for hitting Skarmory and Ferrothorn as hard as you can, as well as Scizor and Klefki. Certainly not an amazing set and Clefable is a problem, it is still a pretty cool lure imo.

And since I like to do calcs, have some:

Rock Polish T-tar
Tyranitar @ Life Orb
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naughty Nature
- Rock Polish
- Stone Edge
- Crunch / Ice Beam / Thunderbolt
- Fire Blast / Ice Beam

While Dragon Dance Tyranitar has some speed issues, Rock Polish T-tar outspeeds the entire unboosted tier (Mega Aerodactyl and Mega Alakazam) after a boost and has less commitment when it does set up. With a base 134 Attack stat boosted by a Naughty nature and a Life Orb, Tyranitar is quite powerful and can muscle through most weakened offensive teams when Keldeo and Landorus-T are out of the picture. Against Stall, it generally has enough power to at least wallbreak, 2HKOing the likes of Mega Sableye and Mega Slowbro with Stone Edge and Crunch respectively.

Tyranitar needs 248 speed EVs to outspeed Mega Aero and Zam, but 252 is used to outspeed Landorus-T pre-Rock Polish. Fire Blast beats Ferrothorn and Skarmory mainly, but Ice Beam can be used for Gliscor and the Landos especially with trapping from Magnezone or Gothitelle. Thunderbolt is also an option to beat Keldeo and do slightly more damage to Mega Slowbro, but it is subpar outside of that. Stone Edge is mandatory because of its power, despite its accuracy problems.

While RP Tyranitar faces competition from Tyrantrum, its ability to go mixed to beat physical walls makes it stand out. Common checks and counters to RP T-tar include Keldeo, Landorus-T, Gliscor, Mega Lopunny, Excadrill (ironically), Garchomp and defensive Mega Altaria.

It's also worth mentioning that RP Tyranitar is a great Swords Dance recipient as it pairs well with Gliscor and Celebi and has the natural bulk to switch into attacks.

Trapping Taunting Tyranitar
tyranitar-gif-gif.38954

Tyranitar @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 84 HP / 252 SpD / 172 Spe
Careful Nature
- Whirlpool
- Taunt
- Stealth Rock
- Pursuit

This set aims to set up Stealth Rock right away while preventing defensive leads from doing so. Taunt is the thing that sets this set apart from others and is incredibly useful for preventing the foe's pokemon from setting up hazards on you, such as Ferrothorn and Skarmory. Stealth Rock is to set up stealth rock. Pursuit is there to take down rapid spinners/defog users such as Starmie and the Latis. Whirlpool is an interesting and gimmicky move to use. At first it appears to contradict with Pursuit. However, Whirlpool allows Tyranitar to take down several pokemon that could wall it. With correct prediction, you can use whirlpool on a slower pokemon that relies on status moves (Chansey, Skarmory, etc) and slowly stall them while preventing them from healing themselves with taunt. Stone Edge is an alternative option if you want immediate power.

The EV spread accomplishes many goals. With 252 Sp.Def investment, Tyranitar's job of pursuit trapping the Latis, Starmie, and other special attackers is made easier. With 172 spe, Tyranitar can outspeed many defenisve pokemon, such as Mandibuzz and Skarmory, allowing you to whirlpool and taunt. The rest of the EVs are dumped into attack.

Also, you beat Chansey. Suck it, blob.

DEFENSIVE CALCS

Hmmm, Tyranitar certainly does have an interesting movepool, allowing it to pull off things like this...
Torment T-Tar
248.gif
Torture is an art (Tyranitar) @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 48 Atk / 208 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Torment
- Substitute
- Protect
- Crunch (Why no knock off GF ;_;)

This set aims to completely screw over a large array of Pokemon with the combination of torment, sub, protect and sandstorm. An extremely large array of 'Mons, such as Hippowdon, Slowbro, Venusaur, Heatran, Bisharp, Celebi etc. All carry either a single offensive move or only one move capable of hurting T-Tar, as Tyranitar has a very impressive array of resistances, as well as some stellar bulk. What this set aims to do is to get a sub up in a predicted switch (say, as a Latios user goes out into Bisharp after you eat their Draco up), as this 'Mon comes in, it will use the one move it has to break T-Tars sub, only to get the shock of their lives when you use torment on them! After this you set up another sub as they hit you with one of their weak secondary offensive moves, and then protect the next turn. After that you can continue the cycle, using crunch to get off chip damage when you know the next hit won't break your sub.

This isn't just an endless PP stalling war to, as T-Tars ability, sand stream, will constantly wear down the opponent while you continue the cycle, leaving you a very strong chance of emerging victorious in a 1v1 situation. Prediction is very necessary with this set, as you must know (if the poke is faster than you) when your sub is going to be broken so you can set up another one before they can use their super-effective move against you. Stall and balanced teams are extremely irritated by this set, as allot of 'Mons found on those teams are commonly mono-attackers/have very weak coverage moves.

Evs are Max HP to reach the magic 404, meaning seismic toss fails to break your substitute, the speed is to creep standard Specially Defensive Heatran, as a large number of defensive 'Mons are under that speed tier, and the rest is dumped into attack with an adamant nature to speed up the process with harder hitting crunches.

Moveset is simply Torment to torment stuff (no pun intended), sub to take advantage of the turn the opponent wont be able to hurt you, protect to stop the opponent breaking your sub when they are able to attack you, and crunch for a hard hitting, good neutral coverage STAB move to use on turns when you are safe with a sub up, and to speed up the whittling process.

Yay! First Mega T-tar set!
Mega Support Tyranitar

Tyranitar @ Tyranitirite
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic
- Pursuit
- Stone Edge

As opposed to regular Mega T-tar sets, this one benefits from its even greater bulk upon MegaEvolving to greatly support its teammates. Combining said bulk and a total of 7 resistances (including the prevalent Flying-, Fire- and Dark-type moves in OU) makes it one of the more reliable SR user in the tier and is really useful to help its teammates obtain OHKOs/2HKOs they normally couldn't. Toxic is used to cripple physically defensive mons that commonly switch into [Mega] T-tar like Hippowdon, Landorus-T, Rotom-W, Chesnaught, Alomomola and others. It also can be used to put setup sweepers on a timer as Mega T-tar is very hard to break through. Pursuit, even uninvested, is able to effectively trap and KO certain mons with little prior damage (Latias after one LO recoil) and even OHKO others (Latios for example). Its enourmous SpD stat helps it Pursuit trap many targets including but not limited to Gengar, offensive Starmie and, as stated, the Latis. Stone Edge is Mega T-tar's strongest move and still fairly hits hard coming from a 364 Atk stat (only 3 points less than ScarfTar!).

The given spread maximizes Mega T-tar's special bulk while still having great defensive bulk. An Impish nature with a spread of 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD can be used to better tank the prevalent physical moves in OU and have 400+ in all defensive stats (which is kinda cool), but it lessens Mega T-tar's effectiveness at Pursuit trapping since its targets are mostly specially based. Leftovers is also nice for passive recovery, but without the Tyranitarite, it misses out on KOs with Pursuit and is also a lot less bulky, which makes this variant a lesser Pursuit trapper/supporter.

Yay I won :) Anyway, this time I'll go for:

Whirlpool Lure Tyranitar

Tyranitar @ Leftovers/Smooth Rock
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 100 HP / 212 Def / 196 S.Atk
Modest Nature/Quiet Nature

- Stone Edge/Dark Pulse/Crunch/Earthquake
- Ice Beam
- Fire Blast
- Whirlpool/Earthquake/Crunch

You lure, you trap, you KO. Using Tyranitar's unlikely access to the move whirlpool and cool special movepool including fire blast and ice beam, TTar lures alot of potential KOs. This set aims to lure + KO them. The first move, either Stone Edge or dark STAB, is there just to be reliable STAB, or you can use EQ for Heatran if you like. The other moves are where things get interesting. Ice Beam lures both Lando formes and Gliscor, while also hitting Serperior, Thundurus and a few other relevant pokes, although Thundi would never switch in to TTar for any reason. Fire Blast hit annoying steels who like to wall TTar's normal sets, like Skarmory and Ferrothorn. Whirlpool can trap and weaken the lured pokes, meaning TTar doesn't have to fully invest to beat them. The EVs listed KO Ferrothorn after whirlpool damage + fire blast, while tanking an invested Lando-T EQ after rocks and KOing back with ice beam, although you can use a different spread if you prefer to dish out more damage. If a more offensive spread is used and you are confident in your prediction, you can forgo Whirlpool for EQ or both STABs instead of just 1. This set works similar to the rather well known power herb Heatran lure, utilising a partial trapping move to get off a powerful SE attack. A pretty cool set IMO, worth trying out if you like being a hipster lure sets.

Specially Based Mixed Life Orb Attacker Tyranitar
life-orb.png

(or just LO T-tar)

Tyranitar @ Life Orb
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Stone Edge
- Dark Pulse
- Ice Beam
- Fire Blast / Filler
This set aims not only to lure most common T-tar counters, but also turning him into a excelent wallbreaker thanks to its vast movepool and his ability (sandstream) to deal indirect damage to the oponent and neutralizing their leftovers.
Max speed and spA evs for better wallbreaking power (the attack doesn´t need investment since it´s already high afk). Stone Edge, Dark Pulse and Ice Beam are almost mandatory and Fire Blast is great for steels but ThunderBolt is also good for Keldeo switchins. This set can also pack SR for support the team.
Little Tip: Try to keep your rocks up since it lets T-tar get some useful K.O.s

My set for tyranitar is AV tyranitar. This set further boosts tyranitar's sp defense to higher lvs, making him a very the a threatening sp wall. Now I know that people think this will not work because tyranitar cannot recover well thats 9 because there is something called a cleric. Having clefable with wish and heal bell will help this tyranitar a lot. Now here's the move set I went with.

Tyrant (Tyranitar) (M) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Stone Edge
- Pursuit
- Earthquake/Flamethrower
- Ice Beam

Now if you choose earthquake make sure that clefable has flamethrower to take opponents down like scizor. Stone Edge is his main stab that still hits very hard. Pursuit is to keep latias and latias in check like he does best. Ice Beam Is To Take Care Annoying gliscor, Who honestly should get suspect tested along with whismicott, Sp Defensive or not.
