To Ragequit or Not to Ragequit? That is the Question.

Hi guys,

I discovered this site a few months back, but this is the first time I'm posting a Warstory. I didn't really get into competitive battling until a few weeks ago. I threw together a Sand/Stall team and somehow managed to make it into the top 1% on the Pokemon Online server. This is probably just due to dumb luck, however, because as far as I'm concerned, I'm as noobish as they come.

I don't care to memorize Movesets and EV spreads; I don't really think my decisions through during battle; and I often don't recognize what Pokemon my opponent is using even with team preview. Yes, I am a bona fide noob. So if you're looking for:

-Awesome predictions skills
-Amazing in-depth commentary
-A match between seasoned pros

Then stop reading here. You’ve been warned.

On the other hand, if you're looking for:

-Laugh-out-loud noobishness
-Terrible jokes
-Edge-of-your-seat suspense
-A peerless example of what NOT to do during battle

Then read on and enjoy :)

Note: For the sake of my opponent's privacy, I have erased all mentions of his handle. He will henceforth be referred to as "Opponent."

Note #2: It was difficult keeping track of all the HP percentages, so I may be a few % off every now and then. Correct me if you care to.

Note #3: A big THANK YOU to Opposite Day for providing an awesome Warstory format!

Everything I do will be in cool blue; my opponent's actions will be in evil red.

HakoNiNeko's Team

My recently updated SandStall team, thanks to the generous advice of other Smogon users on the Rate My Team forum.

Opponent's Team

I don’t really know what the unifying theme is here, and I can’t really be bothered to try and figure it out. Let’s get battlin’!

I assume that my opponent will be starting with Ferrothorn, and since I don't want to lose the arms...err, hazards race, I decide to send out Skarmory to set up Stealth Rock and then Whirlwind that annoying spiked weed away.

VS

Opponent sent out Ferrothorn!

As expected. Let’s get this party started!

Start of Turn 1
Skarmory used Stealth Rock!
Pointed stones float in the air around Opponent's team!

The foe's Ferrothorn used Stealth Rock!
Pointed stones float in the air around HakoNiNeko's team!

No surprises here. Now it's time to get that thing outta there before it can set up too many hazards. I just pray I don’t end up phazing in Arcanine.

Pointed stones dug into the foe's Hydreigon!

Hydreigon: 87%

Alright, we've got ourselves a Hydreigon here. Anyone else get swept by Ghetsis’s Hydreigon in-game? I can only hope that same fate does not await me here. I figure this one probably has a toasty Flamethrower or Fire Blast waiting for my Skarmory, so I decide to switch to Jellicent to take the hit.

Yay, my prediction was correct! Still, my Jellicent took quite a bit of damage from those entry hazards and my opponent’s attack, which already puts me on the defensive. I need to regain the momentum, so I decide to send in Tyranitar and change the weather in my favor. My opponent is either gonna stay in and go for a Dark move or switch out to a more effective counter, so even if he has Focus Blast, I doubt he’ll predict well enough to use it.

Dammit, he outsmarted me there :/ I totally forgot that he had an Arcanine with Flash Fire, and I underestimated his ability to predict a Fire Blast from my Tyranitar. Fail.

***
PROTIP #1: Always take note of Pokemon on your opponent’s team that have “Flash Fire,” “Water Absorb,” or other abilities that may cause you to unwittingly assist them in killing you.
***

Well, I figure even a boosted Fire-type attack won’t hurt my TTar much, especially with his Special Defense boost thanks to Sandstorm, so I stay in and go for the Roar to get rid of his bonus before he really fries my team.

In retrospect, I probably should have asked myself, “Why would my opponent switch in an SR-weak Arcanine to face my Tyranitar? He must have a good reason.” But I didn’t really feel like using my head at the time. And sure enough, I paid the price.

WHAT WAS I THINKING? I honestly have no idea what the heck was going through my head. I guess I can only chalk it up to the noob in me. At this point, I’ve basically given up any hope of winning this match. But rather than ragequit, I decide to stick it out and at least give the impression that I’m putting up a fight. Besides, I can’t complain about other ragequitters if I do it myself, amirite? So I send in Jellicent to hopefully nail Arcanine with Surf, or at least force a switch.

Oh well, guess I should make the most of this “gift.” Now both I and the opponent each have SR + 1 layer of Spikes up. And the hazards work their magic again, severely crippling the mighty Conkeldurr. But I can’t risk getting hit with a Mach Punch, so I switch to Skarmory. My opponent will probably predict this.

Yep, as I expected, he prepared a nice little Stone Edge just for Skarmy, bringing it dangerously close to fainting. That burn is starting to annoy me, too. I anticipate another Stone Edge, so I go for Roost.

He switches to Jellicent. It’s almost dead, though it’ll probably try to Recover next turn. Can’t do much about that since it’s faster than me, and I can’t outstall it, so it’s time to play Pokemon Roulette! Actually, Russian Roulette is a more apt description, because if my Whirlwind brings in Hydreigon, it’s GG for me. Lady Luck, you’ve brought me this far. Don’t forsake me now!

Woohoo, a miss. But now I face Hydreigon, which spells the end of my Whirlwind spree. A job well done, Skarmy. But this is gonna come down to the wire. I already know Conkeldurr’s dead on the next switch-in. The question is, can my Excadrill survive another switch-in? Three layers of Spikes + SR does 28.25% to him, and that’s about how much HP he has left. This is gonna come down to single digits. Talk about nail-biting suspense!

MVP:
Hmm, this is a toss-up, but I’m gonna have to go with…

Skarmy is such a pimp.

I couldn’t have won without this bundle of steely awesomeness. Excadrill also gets a shoutout for finishing what Skarmory started AND surviving 3 layers of Spikes + SR with THREE HP for the win!

Props:
-Skarmory for setting up SR and Whirlwinding everything into oblivion, not to mention walling most of my opponent’s team
-Ferrothorn for dodging Fire Blast and setting down two layers of Spikes, thus paving the way to an unexpected and probably undeserved victory
-Excadrill for the aforementioned reasons
-The RNG god for saving me in an otherwise hopeless battle

Slops:
-LOSING THREE POKEMON IN A ROW TO UTTER STUPIDITY
-See above
-The other innumerable mistakes and miscalculations that I undoubtedly made
-My opponent for making some questionable decisions of his own

Thank you for reading my first Warstory. I realize it does not portray me in the most flattering light, but I swear I’m not usually *this* bad. Any comments, critiques, and other feedback are welcome!

Standard stall team those things are pretty frustrating... Watching you fail to a mixed Arcanine was certainly enjoyable considering had you anticipated the wild bolt (Though I know it's a risky switch) it would have been a nice switch in for Excadrill.

Good work on winning regardless (even if it was by phasing)

6.5/10

What. ._.

i was gonna give you 5/10 for that silly naruto pic, but the skarm one changed my mind. 8/10.

PROTIP: PACK A DAMNED COUNTER TO ARCANINE
PROTIP: DON'T RUN THREE STEELS THIS ISN'T PLATINUM

A mixed Arcanine, lol. I run a physical the normal Arcanine set up. But yeah good win, good thing you didn't rage quit but there are moments where I want to just close out the app or my ds in whatever case I play on.

huh and here i was thinking rocks+spikes+seed on ferrothorn was illegal.

not a good battle but not a bad battle either; the fire blast miss probably changed the game because of dem hazards. your commentary was good though, so imma give this a 7/10.

Swellow is basically finished next round unless he switches it out...though I don’t know why he’d do that, since it would just be KO’d by SR on the next switch-in.

...

Wow, he actually did it. Maybe this guy’s as noob as I am?

...The NEXT FRIGGIN' TURN...

Sorry, my sweet, thorny weed, but your cremation is imminent. I promise to use your ashes as fertilizer for my garden.

...

Oh, forgot about those entry hazards. Poor thing didn't even get a proper sending-off :( Oh well, dead is dead.
Favorite part. XDD

Also, anyone who bothers rating this... it seems like you missed the point.

huh and here i was thinking rocks+spikes+seed on ferrothorn was illegal.
I think it works if you have a parent with them TM'd on from 4th gen and some kind of crazy breeding chain, I think I figured it out once, but I can't remember.

Also to the OP: He switched his Swellow out because when it comes in again and does to SR, it gives his whatever (in that case, Conkeldurr) a free switch in. He wasn't going to leave it in on an obvious Roost. It wasn't a "noob" thing, it's something that people actually do.

3/10 Warstory, bad playing, un-insightful comments, boring finish.

8/10 for the laughs and watching my favourite pokemon (Arcanine) kick your ass.

@TEA_DEMON Skarm had SR, not Ferrothorn, but you're right it can't get all 3. It can have 2 (from Roselia/Cacturne (Spikes/Seed), Dwebble (SR/Spikes) or Torterra(SR/Seed)), but nothing learns all 3 and can breed with ferrothorn.

Was it you who was taking all my luck the other day? Lol.

This warstory made me smile, didn't learn much (other than what a mixed Arcanine might run), but I consider the comments very well written at least for entertainment factor.

Not too bad, especially if you acknowledge that it's bad. On a scale of Shakespeare to Stephanie Meyer, you'd be a Dan Brown.

Whoo, I'm using quick reply! I wonder what'll happen?

I loved this. Your formatting was beautiful, the battle was hilarious and I laughed a couple times.

I think that turn 28 was a pretty big misplay for your opponent though. Conkeldurr was his lynchpin at that point, so losing him to entry hazards was a bad thing. If he knew you were going to roost, he should have drain punched himself back up to +50% and possibly taken skarm out too.

I give this warstory 8/10 kinky ferrothorns.

Don't worry, I've read the warning at the beginning. You see, if I hadn't seen that, I would've given you 3/10. But seeing that Skarmory managed to weaken his team by proper thinking AND the fact that you acknowledge your misplays is good. Also, for your opponent...

PROTIP: Never underestimate Skarmory
PROTIP: Even if you've foreseen your future and it told you that you would win, you may lose at any time

Overall: 7/10

PROTIP: consider a Dugtrio.

That Arcanine sweep was awesome. I often face palm myself when that dumb moments happens too lol.

Protip: Don't use "Protip" in a warstory

oh was that already used..

Either way.. makes you seem super arrogant and stupid at the same time.

In your opinion. Given that they were mistakes he was making, I figured it just made it seem like a stupid mistake that he found funny.

On the whole, warstory clearly wasn't serious and shouldn't be taken as such - if it were, it'd probably be a pretty bad one. As it is, I found it quite funny to read. The end mistake was a shame, though. :P

I'm happy to see nonserious warstories, but I don't think you can say you're playing competitively if you try to seed a grass type ._.

Also to the OP: He switched his Swellow out because when it comes in again and does to SR, it gives his whatever (in that case, Conkeldurr) a free switch in. He wasn't going to leave it in on an obvious Roost. It wasn't a "noob" thing, it's something that people actually do.
Ahh, that makes sense. I guess that proves how noob I really am :P Thanks for explaining.

Also, just to reiterate (in case anyone missed it), this wasn't meant to be a serious Warstory, but rather a public self-mockery for entertainment's sake. I hope it accomplished its objective ^^

I'm happy to see nonserious warstories, but I don't think you can say you're playing competitively if you try to seed a grass type ._.
I thought he would switch Ferrothorn out, which I admit in retrospect was not a smart move. I wouldn't *deliberately* seed a grass type, I'm not that bad :P
