Nominating Dialga as a check.

Dialga @ Shuca Berry
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 Spe
Modest Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Flash Cannon
- Stealth Rock
- Fire Blast

Simple enuff. If you see Salamence, bring in dialga and take it out with draco. If it DD's on the switch, you live a +1 Earthquake with ease and ohko it with draco. Mence cant beat this mon in a 1v1 scenario as long as the shuca berry is intact. Avoid switching into earthquake if possible since any smart user will just switch out and set up at a later time as you will have no berry to beat it.

calcs:
252 Atk Mega Salamence Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Shuca Berry Dialga: 102-120 (25.3 - 29.7%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
+1 252 Atk Mega Salamence Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Shuca Berry Dialga: 152-179 (37.7 - 44.4%)
0 damage.
252+ SpA Dialga Draco Meteor vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Salamence: 566-668 (170.9 - 201.8%)
lots of damage.

As a side note people - don't be afraid to list standard sets. The entire idea of this thread is for users to come in and see what is used by your average team to check the biggest threats of the metagame. If the standard ones are outta the way then post whatever you came up with but we dont want a thread full of random ass sets that i doubt even the poster of it would use. also why do people "reserve" things? just write the whole set out and then post it, i dont get the idea of this whole reservation stuff outside of ubers c&c.

edit: since it will probs be brought up - run 12 speed if u want to outspeed diancie pre-mega.

Nominating Lugia as a counter.

Lugia @ Leftovers
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Ice Beam
- Roost
- Toxic
- Whirlwind

Assuming Stealth Rocks are off your field, there is absolutely no chance this Salamence set is breaking through Lugia. The only thing you have to be careful about is switching in on double-edge if rocks are up, but otherwise it's a pretty straightforward counter.

252 Atk Aerilate Mega Salamence Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Multiscale Lugia: 83-98 (19.9 - 23.5%) -- 0% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

+1 252 Atk Aerilate Mega Salamence Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Lugia: 247-292 (59.3 - 70.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Aerilate Mega Salamence Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Lugia: 166-196 (39.9 - 47.1%) -- 96.9% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery - worst case scenario

+6 252 Atk Aerilate Mega Salamence Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Multiscale Lugia: 330-389 (79.3 - 93.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery - lol

0 SpA Lugia Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Salamence: 260-308 (78.5 - 93%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Skarmory is a Counter

Skarmory @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Impish Nature
- Roost
- Whirlwind
- Toxic
- Brave Bird

So, this set is pretty simple. It takes frustrations very well, toxics, and can phaze mega-mence out. Brave bird is so you aren't complete taunt fodder. Cool thing is that you are a fairly reliable counter, until people start running fire blast.
+1 252+ Atk Aerilate Salamence Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 129-152 (38.6 - 45.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Skarmory Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Salamence: 85-102 (25.6 - 30.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252+ Atk Aerilate Salamence Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252 Def Skarmory: 94-111 (28.1 - 33.2%) -- 95.3% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

Rhydon

Check

Rhydon @ Eviolite
Ability: Rock Head
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Avalanche
- Stone Edge
- Rest
- Toxic

Simple enough, Rhydon switches in, salamence can't 3hko Rhydon.
252+ Atk Salamence Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Rhydon: 112-132 (27 - 31.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
Whilst Rhydon can Ohko Mence if it attacks,
0 Atk Rhydon Avalanche vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Salamence: 344-408 (103.9 - 123.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO,
And if mence dragon dances, Rhydon can 2hko, and live the earthquake on the next turn. Small prediction is required to get a toxic off on Salamences that spam roost/dd, and you can run protect over toxic to help with roost spammers.

Also can provide stealth rock for team/check ho-oh/is 1st mon eva!

Reserving Bronzong as a check.

Bronzong @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Gyro Ball
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic
- Protect

Bronzong doesn't care about anything Mega Salamence does and can 2HKO it with Gyro Ball. Toxic can be used if one predicts the Mega Salamence will Roost. Protect allows Bronzong to stall for Toxic turns and gain a little health while Stealth Rock provides support for the team.

Calculations:
252 Atk Aerilate Salamence Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Bronzong: 90-106 (26.6 - 31.3%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
4 Atk Bronzong Gyro Ball (130 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Salamence: 153-181 (46.2 - 54.6%) -- 61.3% chance to 2HKO

Reserving phys. defensive P-ogre
Edit:
Check:

Kyogre-Primal @ Blue Orb
Ability: Primordial Sea
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 Spe
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

P-Kyogre is pretty underrated right now but it can run a physically defensive set to beat salamence. You can switch in on the dragon dance live the +1 double edge and KO with Ice Beam. You have to be weary of switching in on a double edge tho because kyogre can't 2. This is one of the better mence checks because a.) it's not niche, (everyone needs a check to rayquaza and mence and this acts as one) b.) It can fit on many teams whether it's balance, bulky offense or even stall. c.) It can do a lot more besides check mence because even an unboosted and uninvested scald hurts from primal kyogre. So Yeah try our phys. def kyogre you will not be disappointed.

Relevant Calcs:
252 Atk Mega Salamence Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Primal Kyogre: 91-108 (22.5 - 26.7%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Aerilate Mega Salamence Double-Edge vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Primal Kyogre: 213-252 (52.8 - 62.5%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 Atk Aerilate Mega Salamence Double-Edge vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Primal Kyogre: 319-376 (79.1 - 93.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Primal Kyogre Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Mega Salamence: 472-556 (142.5 - 167.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 SpA Primal Kyogre Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Mega Salamence in Heavy Rain: 118-139 (35.6 - 41.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Arceus @ Pixie Plate
Ability: Multitype
EVs: 236 HP / 88 Def / 8 SpA / 176 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Judgment
- Calm Mind
- Recover
- Refresh / Earth Power

This thing created Salamence's world... and it can just as easily destroy it! It lives +1 Double Edge and, with the 8 SpA EVs, OHKOes mence with Judgment. It is the perfect definition of a check to that particular Mega Salamence.
Saucer v Space GoatHorse:
~ 252 Atk Aerilate Salamence Double-Edge vs. 236 HP / 88 Def Arceus-Fairy: 220-259 (50 - 58.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
~ +1 252 Atk Aerilate Salamence Double-Edge vs. 236 HP / 88 Def Arceus-Fairy: 328-387 (74.5 - 87.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Space GoatHorse v Saucer:
~ 8 SpA Pixie Plate Arceus-Fairy Judgment vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Salamence: 332-392 (100.3 - 118.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
~ 8 SpA Pixie Plate Arceus-Fairy Judgment vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Salamence on a critical hit: 498-588 (150.4 - 177.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

EVs: 160 HP / 88 Def / 8 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Judgment
- Calm Mind

- Ice Beam

This is a full counter to Mence.

EVs are just to enable it to act as a late game win condition as well as comfortably tanking hits, being able to survive 2 double edges after stealth rocks if you lose the speed tie. Ice beam KO's without investment, so I put the remaining 8 in SpD. Judgement is there so that this thing also checks pdon. Also, if he gets the bright idea of roosting up to avoid the OHKO, ice beam does a lot more than 50% to it, so it wont work.

Edit: relevent calcs

0 SpA Arceus-Ground Ice Beam vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Salamence: 364-432 (109.6 - 130.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252 Atk Salamence Double-Edge vs. 160 HP / 88 Def Arceus-Ground: 169-199 (40.1 - 47.2%) -- 1.2% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Salamence Double-Edge vs. 160 HP / 88 Def Arceus-Ground: 113-133 (26.8 - 31.5%) -- 0.3% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock

Slowbro-Mega @ Slowbronite
Ability: Shell Armor
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunder Wave
- Slack Off
- Ice Beam
- Scald

Counter. This set ultilizes Slowbro's very good mega-evo, as it gives him a massive buff in defence and also gives him an ability that removes any chance of critical hits landing on any turn, after he has evolved. A crit at the switch-in, is the only thing that Mence can win against this Slowbro. Thunder Wave is here to completely ruin Salamence's chance of sweeping, and coupled with Slack Off, this guy can just wait for the full para to happen. Ice Beam is a oneshot and can be used to easily defeat this poke, when you feel like it. Scald is just a standard move that this thing should have. Although I'm not sure how much the speed stat of a paralysed pokemon becomes, Slowbro might actually still be slower than a paralysed Mega-Mence at +1, so keep that in mind.

Relevant calcs:
252 Atk Aerilate Salamence Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega-Slowbro: (32.9 - 39.0%)
+1 252 Atk Aerilate Salamence Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega-Slowbro: (49.4 - 58.1%) -- 98.4% chance to 2HKO
252 Atk Aerilate Salamence Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro: (47.2 - 55.8%)
0 SpA Mega-Slowbro Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Salamence: (107.5 - 126.8%)

Skarmory @ Rocky helmet
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 atk
Impish Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- iron defense
- roost
- brave bird
- toxic

Skarmory is probably the most solid check to mega salamence as skarmory resists mence's STAB and earthquake is immune. Toxic is there to force mence into attacking while rocky helmet also does some handsome damage when mence attacks. Brave bird is to do extra damage, roost is for recovery and iron defense, not required for this challenge but decided to put in the moveset because the set looks cute now.

Reserving Rotom-Wash as a check.

EDIT:

Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA
Bold Nature
- Thunder Wave
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Pain Split
- Volt Switch

Rotom-Wash can work as a check to Mega Mence since it resists Double-Edge and it is immune to eq, with Thunder Wave it can slow down Mence and making it a much smaller threat, hp ice allows Rotom to 2HKO Mence, and it can use Pain Split to regain health after being worn down, Volt Switch is here to gain momentum. With these EVs Rotom can take three unboosted Double-Edges and at +1 Mence only has a small chance to 2HKO Rotom.

Relevant calcs:

252 Atk Aerilate Salamence Double-Edge vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Rotom-W: 95-112 (31.3 - 36.9%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

+1 252 Atk Aerilate Salamence Double-Edge vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Rotom-W: 142-168 (46.8 - 55.4%) -- 17.6% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

8 SpA Rotom-W Hidden Power Ice vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Salamence: 200-236 (60.4 - 71.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Giratina-A as a counter although all its other sets are only checks

Giratina @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD

- Will-O-Wisp
- Dragon Tail

252 Atk Aerilate Salamence Double-Edge vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Giratina: 177-208 (35.1 - 41.3%) -- 74.4% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

+1 252 Atk Aerilate Salamence Double-Edge vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Giratina: 262-310 (52 - 61.6%) -- 98% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

So if salamence comes in on any teammate, you can send in giratina with rocks on your side and regardless of which move he clicks. Of course the great wall predates XY and is now a bit of a liability if they have fairyceus / xerneas as a partner, and is also built to support spikes teams, but this goes beyond the scope of the thread.

Hey I think their is something wrong with your calcs. I believe you calced this using regular Salamence and not mega. I think you should fix up your post with the correct calcs. http://gamut-was-taken.github.io/ <--- This has all the new megas including mega salamence and the primals. I'd bookmark it so you can use it for the future until the showdown one is updated.
