Week 112: Sorry for the big delay; I couldn't login to smogon yesterday, so that was definitely a part of it. Thanks to all for the nominations and votes! The results are...

Checks: Mega Diancie (CrystalRam) | Rhyperior (Infernal) | Rotom-W (michaeloche)
Counters: Zapdos (Random Passerby) | Hippowdon (nameless90) | Solrock (Hot dog pizza)

I'm in awe that Solrock was picked over Skarmory...

Anyway (cue Friends-esque transition),

Week 113: Choice Specs Magnezone
upload_2016-7-29_12-40-7.png

Magnezone @ Choice Specs
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 76 HP / 252 SpA / 180 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SpA / 30 Spe
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Volt Switch
- Flash Cannon

Charizard-X as a check.

Charizard @ Charizardite X
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Flare Blitz
- Dragon Claw
- Roost/Earthquake

First of all, let's appreciate just how freaking powerful Magnezone is. Zard-X resists every attack Zone can throw at it, and yet Specs T-Bolt is still a clean 2HKO after rocks (46.4 - 54.8%). That said, Zard can switch in on some things, especially if it's already gone mega, and proceed to wipe it out with STAB Flare Blitz (157.4 - 185.8%). If you're running EQ over Roost, save yourself the recoil (132 - 155.5%).

Gastrodon as a Counter

Gastrodon @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 252 HP / 112 Def / 144 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Curse
- Scald
- Earthquake
- Recover
Gastrodon it's a very good counter of magnezone thanks to his typing and unlike chansey it can block Volt Switching, but it's weak to HP Grass anyway this option it's too rare to see
252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Flash Cannon vs. 252 HP / 112 SpD Gastrodon: 111-132 (26 - 30.9%) -- 7.8% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

Check: Banded Terrakion

Terrakion @ Choice Band
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge
- Rock Slide
- Quick Attack

Terrakion can't switch into magnezone but it can revenge kill it very easily. Close Combat from banded Terrakion 100% kills magnezone. Terrakion can also take 1 thunder bolt and volt switch from specs magnezone.

252 Atk Choice Band Terrakion Close Combat vs. 76 HP / 0 Def Magnezone: 518-612 (172.6 - 204%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Terrakion: 262-310 (81.1 - 95.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Volt Switch vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Terrakion: 205-243 (63.4 - 75.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Dugtrio as a Check

Dugtrio @ Focus Sash
Ability: Arena Trap
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Earthquake
- Reversal
- Memento
- Stealth Rock
Dugtrio is a very solid Check to Magnezone in its own way. Because of Arena Trap Magnezone can't switch out and will always be trapped and taken out the field. Dugtrio normally couldn't switch into Magnezones attacks because of the risk of a Flash Cannon and even HP Fire, but (if SR aren't up) with a Focus Sash it can allow to, because it doesn't get OHKO.
Basically Dugtrio comes in, takes every one hit, traps the trapper, OHKOs it with EQ.
252 Atk Dugtrio Earthquake vs. 168 HP / 0 Def Magnezone: 420-496 (130 - 153.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Scald
- Recover
- Earthquake
- Toxic / Encore

Role: Counter

Quagsire resists or is immune to all four moves the Magnezone carries, and as such, avoids the 2HKO from Flash Cannon even after rocks and takes very little from HP Fire. In return, Earthquake is an OHKO.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Quagsire: 76-89 (19.2 - 22.5%) -- possible 6HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Flash Cannon vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Quagsire: 152-179 (38.5 - 45.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Quagsire Earthquake vs. 76 HP / 0 Def Magnezone: 336-400 (112 - 133.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 SpA Quagsire Scald vs. 76 HP / 0 SpD Magnezone: 67-79 (22.3 - 26.3%) -- 10.4% chance to 4HKO (in case you were wondering)

Name: Chansey
Status: Counter

Chansey @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Bold Nature
- Toxic
- Soft-Boiled
- Seismic Toss
- Heal Bell

Chansey laughs off every attack from Magnezone and can heal up or wear it down with Seismic Toss. Just watch out for Volt Switch which will allow your opponent to force Chansey out later.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. 4 HP / 252 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 124-147 (19.3 - 22.8%) -- 8.4% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Volt Switch vs. 4 HP / 252 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 96-114 (14.9 - 17.7%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock
Chansey Seismic Toss vs. 72 HP Magnezone: 100-100 (33.4 - 33.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

Mega Manectric as a check.

Manectric @ Manectite
Ability: Lightningrod
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Hidden Power Ice
- Overheat / Flamethrower

Manectric is one of the best checks to Magnezone, being able to resist its STAB combination, while also acting as a great switchin pre-mega, as it forces Magnezone to think before going for Volt Switch to try and get momentum off of it. Specs Thunderbolt is a 2HKO on Manectric, and so is Flash Cannon after Rocks, but Manectric can force it out by threatening it with Fire coverage like Overheat which OHKO's and Flamethrower which kills with prior damage:

252 SpA Mega Manectric Overheat vs. 76 HP / 0 SpD Magnezone: 318-376 (106 - 125.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Mega Manectric Flamethrower vs. 76 HP / 0 SpD Magnezone: 222-262 (74 - 87.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Manectric: 145-171 (51.6 - 60.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Flash Cannon vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Manectric: 129-153 (45.9 - 54.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Check

Hydreigon @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Roost / Flash Cannon
- Dark Pulse
- Fire Blast

Hydreigon is one of those Pokemon that really punishes Magnezone trapping Ferrothorn or Mega Scizor. If you're able to catch it locked into Thunderbolt or Hidden Power Fire, the next switch in it going to be severely punished by Draco Meteor or Dark Pulse, which hit like nukes. Even if Magnezone stays in, Thunderbolt can't 2HKO without any prior damage, and Hydreigon outspeeds and can OHKO in return with Fire Blast. Switching in is risky thanks to Volt Switch and Flash Cannon, though, so be careful with that.
252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Hydreigon: 132-156 (40.6 - 48%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252+ SpA Life Orb Hydreigon Fire Blast vs. 168 HP / 0 SpD Magnezone: 364-429 (112.6 - 132.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Status: Check

Garchomp @ Lum Berry
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw
- Stealth Rock

Garchomp's typing allows it to stop any attempts to Volt Switch or Thunderbolt while taking little damage from HP Fire, though it must beware of switching into Flash Cannon. Earthquake easily OHKOes Magnezone.

Against Garchomp:
252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Hidden Power Fire vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 62-73 (17.3 - 20.4%) -- possible 5HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Flash Cannon vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 246-291 (68.9 - 81.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Against Magnezone:
252 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 76 HP / 0 Def Magnezone: 580-688 (193.3 - 229.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Counter: CM Blissey

Blissey @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Bold Nature
- Soft-Boiled
- Heal Bell
- Calm Mind
- Flamethrower

0 SpA Blissey Flamethrower vs. 168 HP / 0 SpD Magnezone: 112-134 (34.6 - 41.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. 4 HP / 252 SpD Blissey: 156-184 (23.9 - 28.2%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

Blissey tanks very well every special attacks and solidly solidly 3HKOes Magnezone recovering HP with Leftovers. Calm Mind allows this pink blob to have a niche over her small -but fat- sister Chansey. If your opponent doesn't have physical attackers available, you will win because you can check well TG Manaphy at +6 SpA.

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 188 SpD / 68 Spe
Calm Nature
- Lava Plume
- Toxic
- Taunt / Protect / Roar
- Stealth Rock

Heatran resists Flash Cannon, avoids the 2HKO from Volt Switch, and is immune to Hidden Power, allowing it to switch in, then OHKO it with Lava Plume after hazard or burn damage.

Thunderbolt is a 2HKO if the damage rolls are in Magnezone's favor, so switching into that is somewhat risky.

Offensive:
0 SpA Heatran Lava Plume vs. 76 HP / 0 SpD Magnezone: 236-282 (78.6 - 94%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Defensive:
252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Volt Switch vs. 252 HP / 188+ SpD Heatran: 136-162 (35.2 - 41.9%) -- 83.3% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Flash Cannon vs. 252 HP / 188+ SpD Heatran: 39-46 (10.1 - 11.9%) -- possibly the worst move ever
252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 188+ SpD Heatran: 177-208 (45.8 - 53.8%) -- 2.3% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

BIG G CHOPPA

Banned deucer.

Zygarde @ Life Orb
Ability: Aura Break
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Earthquake
- Outrage
- Stone Edge

Check

Zygarde holds some pretty good bulk and its natural typing allows it to resist Hidden Power Fire from Magnezone and is immune to Volt Switch and Thunderbolt. While it can take a Flash Cannon and retaliate back with Earthquake, able to cleanly OHKO the magnezone. Also can use it as setup bait if locked into any move other than Flash Cannon.

Calcs

252+ Atk Life Orb Zygarde Earthquake vs. 76 HP / 0 Def Magnezone: 691-816 (230.3 - 272%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Flash Cannon vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Zygarde: 225-265 (62.8 - 74%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

You want a counter? I'll give you a counter.

Enter:

Lanturn @ Leftovers
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 228 HP / 48 SpA / 232 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Scald
- Heal Bell
- Toxic

Tired of fast electric pivots? Thundurus break through your team again? Your Zone answers being constantly worn down? Allow me to introduce you Lanturn, the better Rotom-Wash. With Volt Absorb, it completely discourages any kind of Volt Switch shenanigans, or if not, provides Lanturn with some free health. We all know how annoying Rotom is type wise, and Lanturn possessing the same enables it to act as a similarly annoying Pokémon, while being a counter to essentially any electric type in the tier, including Rotom thanks to Heal Bell. Magnezone itself just cannot touch Lanturn, being 4x resistant to Flash Cannon, resisting HP Fire and obviously being immune to Electric type attacks enables Lanturn to act as the perfect counter. EVs are there basically to hit a Leftovers number while 4HKOing Magnezone with Scald.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Hidden Power Fire vs. 228 HP / 232+ SpD Lanturn: 47-56 (10.4 - 12.5%) -- possibly the worst move ever
252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Flash Cannon vs. 228 HP / 232+ SpD Lanturn: 47-55 (10.4 - 12.2%) -- possibly the worst move ever
48 SpA Lanturn Scald vs. 168 HP / 0 SpD Magnezone: 81-96 (25 - 29.7%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
