Lando-I is a good check to mega bee thats on a lot of teams right now, and for good reason. The most bee can do to this is 3hko with poison jab, and u-turn isnt even a guaranteed 3hko without rocks. It clearly ohkos with earth power and psychic, and even with its item knocked off, lando is able to 2hko with earth power (ohko with rocks) and ohko no matter what with psychic. Rock polish is recommended for this, as it allows lando to outspeed bee after rock polish, so you dont risk knock off and losing your item unless you rock polish on it (which like. why.)

heres some calcs!

Do checks need to be able to switch in?

Do checks need to be able to switch in?
Technically a check has to be able to switch in on a certain move. A revenge killer counts as a check, but crawdaunt isn't very reliable as it can't switch in on any of mega beedrill's moves.
It's still a check, just very very unreliable.

K, I will change it to a soft check then.

Alomomola @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spa
Bold Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Scald
- Knock Off / Toxic
Can always switch in, U-Turn deals less than the regenerating HP's as you switch out: infinite possible switchins and infinite possible rocky helmet damage without being hurt. Also, wishprotect -which makes it impossible go break through for the bee- with huge HP, and knockoff/Toxic, make it a great defensive wall in general for any team, as a healer and such.
Also has scald which has a good burn chance, and could wear the bee out even faster thanks to the halved down Atk.

calc:

Cobalion @ Leftovers
Ability: Justified
EVs: 140 HP / 112 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Volt Switch
- Iron Head
- Stealth Rock / Taunt

Cobalion can freely come in on any of Mega Beedrill's moves (except Drill Run) and OHKO it back with Iron Head if Stealth Rock is up. Volt Switch is a free momentum button for the team while Close Combat allows Cobalion to take on Bisharp, Kyurem-B and Tyranitar. Cobalion can also set up Stealth Rock or disrupt the opponent with Taunt.

Calculations:
252+ Atk Mega Beedrill Drill Run vs. 140 HP / 0 Def Cobalion: 172-204 (48 - 56.9%) -- 64.5% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

EXTREME SPEED CHECKS COMIN' UP!!!

Entei as a (shaky) Check

Entei @ Choice Band
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Sacred Fire
- Extreme Speed
- Stone Edge
- Bulldoze

Alright. This one only works effectively when M-Beedrill has entered the field with rocks up. If so, Entei can take (not well though) either a Poison Jab or a Drill Run (U-turn makes M-Beedrill go away and it can KO later with Poison Jab/Drill Run and Knock Off strips it of its CB) and retaliate with an Extreme Speed before M-Beedrill has the chance to do anything else but manually switching out.

Calcs:

252 Atk Adaptability Mega Beedrill Poison Jab vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Entei: 222-262 (59.8 - 70.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Mega Beedrill Drill Run vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Entei: 222-262 (59.8 - 70.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Choice Band Entei Extreme Speed vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Beedrill: 267-315 (98.5 - 116.2%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO (guaranteed one with rocks up)
Lucario as a (shaky) Check

Lucario @ Life Orb
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Close Combat
- Extreme Speed
- Iron Tail / Earthquake / whatever filler move

If M-beedrill has Knock Off, then Lucario can come in on anything and deal a good amount of damage (OHKO with rocks) with ES. If M-Beedrill has Drill Run though, Lucario has to wait until M-Beedrill has entered the field when rocks are up, switching in on anything bar Drill Run and then OHKO back with ES.

Calcs:

252 Atk Adaptability Mega Beedrill U-turn vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Lucario: 56-67 (19.9 - 23.8%) -- guaranteed 5HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Mega Beedrill Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Lucario: 78-92 (27.7 - 32.7%) -- 0.5% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Mega Beedrill Drill Run vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Lucario: 260-306 (92.5 - 108.8%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock (don't switch on this)
252+ Atk Life Orb Lucario Extreme Speed vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Beedrill: 225-265 (83 - 97.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

And after having its LO Knocked Off:

+1 252+ Atk Lucario Extreme Speed vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Beedrill: 260-306 (95.9 - 112.9%) -- 75% chance to OHKO (guaranteed one with rocks up)
Dragonite as a Check

Dragonite @ Choice Band
Ability: Multiscale
Evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Outrage
- Extreme Speed
- Earthquake
- Fire Punch

Due to its Multiscale ability, Dragonite can safely come in on any move bar Knock Off (little dragon loves its CB) and reliably OHKO with ES. If rocks are up though, Dragonite barely survives rocks + Poison Jab.

Calcs:

252 Atk Adaptability Mega Beedrill U-turn vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Multiscale Dragonite: 44-52 (13.6 - 16%) -- possible 7HKO
252 Atk Mega Beedrill Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Multiscale Dragonite: 61-72 (18.8 - 22.2%) -- possible 5HKO
252 Atk Adaptability Mega Beedrill Poison Jab vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Multiscale Dragonite: 102-120 (31.5 - 37.1%) -- 83% chance to 3HKO
252 Atk Adaptability Mega Beedrill Poison Jab vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Dragonite: 204-240 (63.1 - 74.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Choice Band Dragonite Extreme Speed vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Beedrill: 298-351 (109.9 - 129.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Zygarde as a Check

Zygarde @ Life Orb
Ability: Aura Break
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Earthquake
- Outrage
- Extreme Speed

Sounds like I'm repeating myself (and I am), but when rocks are up, Zygarde has to wait until M-Beedrill switches in and can then come in on any move bar Knock Off (LO is essential here) and OHKO with ES.

Calcs:

252 Atk Mega Beedrill Drill Run vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Zygarde: 83-98 (23.1 - 27.3%) -- 99.9% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Adaptability Mega Beedrill Poison Jab vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Zygarde: 83-98 (23.1 - 27.3%) -- 99.9% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock

Talonflame as a Counter

Talonflame @ Sharp Beak
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 88 HP / 252 Atk / 168 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- Roost

Even with Stealth Rock up, Talonflame can freely switch in to any of Volcorona's moves, especially Quiver Dance, and KO back with priority Brave Bird. Even if Talonflame needs to stay in, it can use priority Roost until the opponent runs out of Fire Blast PP or misses, meaning Talonflame will be left with close to full health once Volcorona is beaten.

Scenarios:
-Talonflame comes in on a Quiver Dance, priority Brave Bird always KOs and Volcorna can't do anything back.
-Talonflame comes in on a Fire Blast, Giga Drain or Bug Buzz, lives even with Stealth Rocks up, and KOs back with Brave Bird

252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 88 HP / 0 SpD Talonflame: 125-147 (39.1 - 46%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252 SpA Volcarona Giga Drain vs. 88 HP / 0 SpD Talonflame: 28-33 (8.7 - 10.3%) -- possibly the worst move ever

Tyranitar as a Check

Tyranitar @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Crunch
- Pursuit
- Superpower

Pretty simple check, if they carry Bug Buzz, you lose - if they dont, you win, as at +1 Scarf Tyranitar is outsped by Volcarona. Most Volcarona tend to run HP Ground these days due to how common Heatran is (and its nice for Zard X) and Tyranitar can sponge up any hit if necessary and OHKO in return.

Volc vs. Tyranitar:

252 SpA Volcarona Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 112-134 (32.8 - 39.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

252 SpA Volcarona Hidden Power Ground vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 90-108 (26.3 - 31.6%) -- 40% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock

+1 252 SpA Volcarona Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 170-200 (49.8 - 58.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

+1 252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 306-360 (89.7 - 105.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpD / 8 Spe
Careful Nature
- Waterfall

- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Gyarados doesn't care about anything Volcarona does and can 2HKO it with Waterfall (OHKO if Volcarona doesn't have Passho Berry). Rest and Sleep Talk allows Gyarados to heal itself and does its jobs more consistently. Roar and Dragon Tail can be chosen to phaze out sweepers who attempt to set up in front of Gyarados while Thunder Wave cripples them for the rest of the match.

Calculations:
252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Gyarados: 66-78 (16.7 - 19.8%) -- possible 6HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Aerodactyl @ Aerodactylite
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 248 Atk / 44 Def / 216 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Aerial Ace
- Earthquake / Fire Fang
- Aqua Tail / Ice Fang

Thanks to Mega Aerodactyl's typing and amazing speed, it can come in on any of Volcarona's moves at least once:

252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Aerodactyl: 117-138 (38.8 - 45.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Volcarona Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Aerodactyl: 107-126 (35.5 - 41.8%) -- 77.7% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Aerodactyl: 96-113 (31.8 - 37.5%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

+1 252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Aerodactyl: 144-171 (47.8 - 56.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Aerodactyl: 132-156 (43.8 - 51.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Aerodactyl: 118-139 (39.2 - 46.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

You can then respond with a nice accurate Aerial Ace (don't even need to mess with Stone Miss):
248 Atk Tough Claws Mega Aerodactyl Aerial Ace vs. 72 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 380-450 (115.5 - 136.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

So, in a worst case scenario (you come in without being Mega Evolved) you are guaranteed to come out on top. However, the reason this is listed as a hard check is because between M-Aero's general frailty and its SR weakness, it's likely to only do this once. Technically, you could drop a coverage move for Roost, which can help improve M-Aero's longevity on paper and arguably make this a Counter, but given said frailty, there's little you can really use Roost on against an offensive team, so it's not recommended.

EVs: 64 HP / 192 Atk / 252 Spe

Altaria resists all of Volc's attacks (except hp ground...but lol) and uses it as set-up fodder. Unboosted fire blast is only an 18% chance to 3hko, and Altaria can easily just roost off that damage. It's not a safe switch in usually, because after rocks +1 fire blast is a 2hko, but 1v1 it comes out on top barring any hax. +1 Altaria's earthquake/return is always an ohko after rocks, and is a 2hko without them.

EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature

Not much to say here but Scarf Terrakion easily outspeeds +1 Volcarona and threatens it with a Stone Edge, while easily taking any move from Volcarona at neutral.
Terrakion can be fairly easy to wear down over a game, so it simply struggles as a counter to Volcarona

So Azu switches in, then Waterfalls on the next turn (activating the Passho Berry), and then finishes with Aqua Jet. Volc can only hit back either a single +1 Giga Drain or two +0 Giga Drains, neither of which deal enough damage to KO. I'd call this a counter because in order for Volc to deal enough damage it would have to take a Waterfall, at which point the priority kills it afterwards.

Chansey @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Bold Nature
- Soft-Boiled
- Stealth Rock

- Seismic Toss

Volcarona's moves have very little effect on Chansey due to its spectacular special bulk. In return, pink blob here can regain its health via Soft-Boiled, badly poison Volcarona (Lum Berry variants will take an additional turn to do so, but Chansey can take it, so it's fine) with Toxic, deal direct damage with Seismic Toss and even setup SR to discourage the flaming moth from switching out (and, eventually, in), which puts Volcarona in a lose-lose situation: if badly poisoned Volcarona stays in, it'll be quickly worn down and KOed by the poison and occasional Seismic Tosses before it can boost to the (reliable) 2HKO range while Chansey will stay healthy throughout the matchup, but if Volcarona switches out, then Chansey only has to setup SR so that Volcarona becomes nothing but a liability for its team.
252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 4 HP / 252 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 94-112 (14.6 - 17.4%) -- possible 6HKO

Scarf Garchomp is a great check to Volcarona. It resists Fire Blast, is neutral to HP Ground, and is only 2HKOed by Bug Buzz at +0. Even after Volcarona sets up a Quiver Dance, Garchomp still outspeeds thanks to Choice Scarf and can OHKO back with Rock Slide.

Hard check;

Dragonite @ Lum Berry
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Claw / Outrage
- ExtremeSpeed
- Fire Punch
- Dragon Dance

Comes in,
-Can use Volcarona as a setup fodder for DDances if no rocks, or goes into the Giga/HPGround/bugbuzz
But, at worst, DNite will switch into FBlast or QD. Either way, it tanks..
-no quiver dance- ...two of these
252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Dragonite: 93-109 (28.7 - 33.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

-yes quiver dance- ....this
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Dragonite: 138-163 (42.7 - 50.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

And attacks with a combo of DClaw+Extremespeed to check.
[252+ Atk Dragonite Dragon Claw vs. 72 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 210-247 (63.8 - 75%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+
252+ Atk Dragonite Extreme Speed vs. 72 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 140-165 (42.5 - 50.1%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO] > 100 %

This works similarly to Azumarill, and you can also heal a Burn if flame body wants to work thanks to Lum Berry.
This could easily counter with a roost set but, since there are clefable, chansey, talonflame, then it would prolly be useless.

Mega Charizard X

Check

Charizard @ Charizardite X
Ability: Blaze -> Tough Claws
EVs: 104 HP / 220 Atk / 184 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Flare Blitz
- Dragon Claw
- Roost

Mega Charizard X can switch into any of Volcarona's moves easily except for HP Ground, and threatens to OHKO with a Flare Blitz.

252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 104 HP / 0 SpD Mega Charizard X: 87-102 (26.9 - 31.5%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 104 HP / 0 SpD Mega Charizard X: 52-62 (16 - 19.1%) -- possible 6HKO
252 SpA Volcarona Hidden Power Ground vs. 104 HP / 0 SpD Mega Charizard X: 156-184 (48.2 - 56.9%) -- 88.3% chance to 2HKO

After a Quiver Dance:
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 104 HP / 0 SpD Mega Charizard X: 129-153 (39.9 - 47.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 104 HP / 0 SpD Mega Charizard X: 79-93 (24.4 - 28.7%) -- 99.7% chance to 4HKO
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Hidden Power Ground vs. 104 HP / 0 SpD Mega Charizard X: 232-274 (71.8 - 84.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

If you switch in before mega evolving:
252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Charizard: 43-51 (14.4 - 17.1%) -- possible 6HKO
252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Charizard: 105-125 (35.3 - 42%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Switch in before mega evolving, then mega evo, you still won't faint:
252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Charizard: 105-125 (35.3 - 42%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+
252 SpA Volcarona Hidden Power Ground vs. 104 HP / 0 SpD Mega Charizard X: 156-184 (48.2 - 56.9%) -- 88.3% chance to 2HKO
= 83.5% - 98.9%, no chance to KO, although Flare Blitz will result in a double down.

Charizard retaliates:
220 Atk Tough Claws Mega Charizard X Flare Blitz vs. 72 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 364-429 (110.6 - 130.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

The only scenario Charizard X fails to check Volcarona after it has already mega evolved is if it switches into HP Ground, then loses a speed tie and is hit by another HP Ground.

If Charizard switches in before mega evolving, it can dodge HP Ground safely. However it takes more damage from Fire Blast in this form, but Volcarona still can't secure a knockout with HP Ground when you choose to mega evolve (this assumes you lose a speed tie as well). This will result in a double down due to Flare Blitz recoil though. Possibility for DD + no mega evo mindgames here, but I'm choosing not to elaborate because this is quite complicated.

Charizard can always switch into a Quiver Dance (regardless of mega evo or not) and survive a +1 HP Ground as long as Stealth Rocks are not up. If Volcarona is running Bug Buzz instead of HP Ground, Charizard X is a counter.

Edit: Sorry I misread/misdid some calcs so this is a lot simpler now, please excuse the constant editing

Reserving Heatran as check

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpD / 8 Spe
Calm Nature
- Stealth Rock/Earthpower
- Ancient Power/Toxic
- Lava Plume
- Taunt/Protect/Roar

Pretty simple check, if volcarano carries hp ground you lose, otherwise you win. Pretty standard Heatran moves. More speed can be used if you want. Ancient Power or toxic is needed to beat roost variants which btw Aragorn the King I think should be slashed. Can also just roar it out but risk getting last mon'd. Air balloon doesn't really make much difference imo as its pretty easily broken and you still get hp grounded

+1 252 SpA Volcarona Hidden Power Ground vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Heatran: 280-332 (72.7 - 86.2%

+6 252 SpA Volcarona Giga Drain vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Heatran: 58-68 (15 - 17.6%)
+6 252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Heatran: 104-123 (27 - 31.9%)

0 SpA Heatran Lava Plume vs. +6 72 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 27-33 (8.2 - 10%)

0 SpA Heatran Lava Plume vs. 72 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 103-123 (31.3 - 37.3%)

0 SpA Heatran Ancient Power vs. 72 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 208-248 (63.2 - 75.3%)

Beware dugtrio

Check

Victini @ Choice Scarf
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- V-create
- Bolt Strike
- U-turn
- Final Gambit / Zen Headbutt

Thanks to Victini's awesome typing it resists Volcarona's main spam moves and can easily come in on them.
Of course this doesn't work so well with the coverage moves like Hidden Power Ground or Bug Buzz, but thanks to Victini's good natural bulk, it can still switch in on them and revenge Volcarona with a V-create (which is a clean OHKO, no Stealth Rocks needed).

The set here is using Jolly Choice Scarf > Adamant Choice Scarf, so that Victini can still outspeed Volcarona after a Quiver Dance because a +1 Bug Buzz has a chance to kill after Stealth Rocks, which would hurt in checking Volcarona.
252 Atk Victini V-create vs. 72 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 348-411 (105.7 - 124.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Victini: 93-109 (27.2 - 31.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Volcarona Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Victini: 42-50 (12.3 - 14.6%) -- possible 6HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Volcarona Hidden Power Ground vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Victini: 136-160 (39.8 - 46.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Victini: 153-180 (44.8 - 52.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Victini: 228-268 (66.8 - 78.5%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
