Overview
########

Pro's:
  • Is the only viable Pokemon that can use Rapid Spin + Foresight succesfully in the tier.
  • Good bulk on both sides that can be boosted further by Eviolite and a decent defensive typing.
  • Wartortle's niche over Avalugg lies in being able to guarantee a Rapid Spin against Ghost-types by hitting them on the switch-in with Foresight.
Cons:
  • Faces heavy competition from Avalugg as a spinner due to its access to Roar and better offensive presence.
  • Wartortle's niche lies in being able to guarantee a Rapid Spin against Ghost-types by hitting them on the switch-in with Foresight, as well as a better defensive typing.
  • Weak offensive stats and extreme set up bait that cause a huge momentum loss when Wartortle is sent in against teams; offensive teams are where it matters.
  • No reliable recovery.
  • Very item-reliant.

Rapid Spin
########
name: Rapid Spin
move 1: Rapid Spin
move 2: Scald
move 3: Foresight
move 4: Toxic
ability: Torrent
item: Eviolite
evs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
nature: Bold

Moves
========
  • Rapid Spin is the main use on this set, as it removes hazards without removing eventual own entry hazards, unlike Defog.
  • Scald is useful as it has a good chance to burn and cripple physical attackers by preventing them from sweeping.
  • Foresight ensures Wartortle to pull off a Rapid Spin against Ghost-types after use.
  • Toxic limits the opponent's longevity by inflicting increasing damage every turn the opponent stays in.
  • Seismic Toss provides the same amount of damage every time it attacks and benefits from Foresight and can break most Substitues, but Scald is better in most situations as it can burn Pokemon.

Set Details
========
  • Torrent is the standard option, as Rain Dish provides even less usefulness.
  • Eviolite directly boosts up Wartortle's defenses on both sides.
  • The EVs and nature invested maximize Wartortle's physical bulk, and Water-types are better suit for taking on physical attackers.
  • A specially defensive spread of 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD can also be used in order to tank special hits better.

Usage Tips
========
  • First thing you should do when sending in Wartortle is basically using Rapid Spin if the opponent has set up hazards on your side.
  • When predicting a Ghost-type Pokemon to come in, use Foresight in order to allow Wartortle to Rapid Spin the hazards away directly the turn after.
  • Use Scald on a predicted switch-in to finish off an opponent quickly when it is at slightly low HP.
  • Use Toxic against Pokemon without cleric support, walls, and Pokemon that are immune to Water.
  • Wartortle shouldn't stay in long unless it can beat the opposing Pokemon due to it losing momentum and being passive.
Team Options
========
  • Wartortle fits well on balance and stall teams due to its access to remove hazards and reasonable defenses.
  • Roselia deserves a special mention, as it has good synergy with Wartortle, resists both its weaknesses and is absorbs status for Wartortle due to Natural Cure.
  • Wartortle is better placed on balance or stall teams as these can handle the loss of momentum.
  • Pokemon such as Dodrio, Flareon, and Rotom-F which appreciate the clearance of hazards, make good partners.
  • Allies that can beat up Electric-types that threaten Wartortle, such as Marowak, Piloswine, and Torterra, as these kind of Pokemon take out Wartortle with ease.
  • Allies that can defeat Grass-types that threaten Wartortle, such as Ninetales and Rotom-Frost, as these kind of Pokemon easily deal with Wartortle.
  • Cleric support is useful too from Pokemon such as Lickilicky and Altaria, and the latter one can also handle Electric- and Grass-type Pokemon well.
  • Wish support from Pokemon such as Lickilicky, that can also provide cleric support, is particularly useful, as Wartortle cannot recover on its own.
Other Options
########

  • Yawn is for forcing switches and preventing Pokemon from setting up
  • Haze stops setup sweepers from getting their boosts even behind Substitutes.
  • Rest provides the only recovery Wartortle has access to and can be used with cleric support.
  • A set of Counter + Mirror Coat is an option, however its a gimmick, requires Wartortle to take heavy damage and doesn't aid it in using Rapid Spin.

Checks & Counters
########

**Grass-types**: Grass-type Pokemon such as Tangela, Roselia or Gourgeist, can either stall Wartortle out by putting it to sleep, as that prevents it from using Rapid Spin, inflict Leech Seed on it, or directly KO it with one of their super effective STAB moves.

**Electric-types*: Electric-types, such as Raichu or Rotom-Frost, can beat Wartortle quite easily with one of their STAB moves. They can switch in on the turn that Wartortle goes for Rapid Spin or Scald and force it to either switch out or get OHKOed by Thunderbolt. Rotom-F can use Wartortle to gain momentum with Volt Switch if there is no opposing Ground-type.

**Set up Sweepers**: Pokemon that can set up, especially those behind a Substitute, such as Bouffalant and Poliwrath and Calm Mind Serperior can easily defeat Wartortle as it is extreme setup bait. When Wartortle is against Serperior, Serperior can either go Giga Drain or predict the switch and get up a Substitute and proceed to Calm Mind.

**Knock Off**: As Wartortle is very item-reliant, Knock Off can remove it and allow other Pokemon to beat up Wartortle pretty quickly. Wartortle can use the turn to Rapid Spin as a Knock Off user such as Sneasel switches in. Sneasel is either going to Knock Off Wartortle's Eviolite or the incoming Pokemon if it isn't gone already.

**Status**: As Wartortle lacks reliable recovery or cleric support, status, especially Poison from Toxic or Toxic Spikes users such as Poliwrath, Pelipper, and Garbodor, can bring it down to low health pretty quickly. Pokemon such as specially defensive Altaria can resist Scald and absorb burns and poison due to Natural Cure when switch. Altaria can get a Toxic of against Wartortle, forcing it to switch or get worn down.

**Haunter and Misdreavus**: Wartortle has access to Foresight for using Rapid Spin against Ghost-type Pokemon however Misdreavus and Haunter both have access to Taunt and can easily predict the incoming Foresight. This renders Wartortle from using Rapid Spin against them and forces it to switch out or take powerful hits.

Overview

Wartortle is the only viable Pokemon that can utilize Rapid Spin + Foresight successfully in the tier, allowing it to Rapid Spin against Ghost-types; this is Wartortle's niche over Avalugg. Wartortle still faces heavy competition from Avalugg, however, due to Avalugg's access to Roar and better offensive presence. Wartortle has good bulk due to its base 80 Defense and Special Defense stats, which is boosted further by Eviolite, not to mention Water is a decent defensive typing. Unfortunately, Wartortle's low offensive stats can render it as setup bait and cause momentum loss against offensive teams. Wartortle has no access to reliable recovery moves unlike Avalugg, which gets Recover, and relies on its item to ensure it can take hits.

Rapid Spin
########
name: Rapid Spin
move 1: Rapid Spin
move 2: Scald
move 3: Foresight
move 4: Toxic
ability: Torrent
item: Eviolite
evs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
nature: Bold

Moves
========
Rapid Spin is mandatory on Wartortle, as it removes entry hazards from only your side of the field, unlike Defog. Scald is useful, as it has a 30% chance to burn and cripple physical attackers. Foresight ensures Wartortle is able to pull off a Rapid Spin against Ghost-types, such as Misdreavus and Haunter. Toxic limits the foe's longevity by inflicting increasing damage every turn it stays in. Seismic Toss provides the same amount of damage every time it is used and pairs well with Foresight to hit Ghost-types; it can also break most Substitutes, but Scald is better in most situations for its chance to burn.

Set Details
========
Torrent is the standard option, as Rain Dish is even more useless. Eviolite increases Wartortle's defensive stats. The given EVs and a Bold nature maximize Wartortle's physical bulk, which is the better option, as Water-types are generally better suited for taking on physical attackers. A specially defensive spread of 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD can be used instead in order to tank special hits better.

Usage Tips
========
The first thing to do when sending in Wartortle is to use Rapid Spin if there are entry hazards on your side of the field, unless the opponent has a Ghost-type. If the opponent has a Ghost-type, use Foresight on the turn it comes in and immediately Rapid Spin the entry hazards away the next turn. To accommodate for Rapid Spin's momentum loss, double switches, U-turn users, and slow Baton Pass users are appreciated. Use Scald on a predicted switch-in to finish off a foe quickly when it is at low HP. Toxic should be used against Pokemon without cleric support, walls, and Pokemon that resist Water-type attacks. Wartortle shouldn't stay in too long unless it can beat the foe, as otherwise, it will lose momentum due to its passivity.

Team Options
========
Wartortle fits well on balanced and stall teams due to its access to Rapid Spin and its reasonable defenses; it should absolutely not be used on offensive teams. Wartortle needs partners that can help make up for the momentum loss it causes such as Scyther, Rotom-F, and Togetic, which can gain momentum from U-turn, Volt Switch, and slow Baton Pass, respectively; they all resist Grass, and Rotom-F resists Electric-type attacks too. Walls such as Roselia and Gourgeist-XL can make up momentum by taking hits and double switching; Roselia deserves a special mention, as it has good synergy with Wartortle due to resisting both Wartortle's weaknesses and absorbing status for Wartortle due to Natural Cure. Pokemon such as Dodrio, Flareon, and Rotom-F appreciate the removal of entry hazards, thereby making Wartortle a good partner. Pokemon that can threaten Electric-types, such as Marowak, Piloswine, and Torterra, or Grass-types, such as Ninetales and Rotom-F, are appreciated, as Wartortle is weak to their STAB attacks. Cleric support is useful too and can be provided by Pokemon such as Altaria, which can handle Electric- and Grass-types, and Lickilicky; the latter can also provide Wish support, which Wartortle finds particularly useful, as it can't recover its health on its own.

Other Options
########
Yawn forces switches and prevents foes from setting up. Haze removes the boosts of setup sweepers, such as Carracosta, even if they are behind Substitute. Rest is the only form of recovery Wartortle has access to and can be used in conjunction with cleric support. A Counter + Mirror Coat set can be used, but it is a gimmick, requires Wartortle to take heavy damage, and doesn't aid it in using Rapid Spin.

Checks & Counters
########
**Grass-types**: Grass-types such as Tangela, Roselia, and Gourgeist can either put Wartortle to sleep and prevent it from using Rapid Spin, use Leech Seed on it, or directly KO it with one of their super effective STAB moves.

**Electric-types*: Electric-types, such as Raichu and Rotom-F, can beat Wartortle quite easily with one of their STAB moves. They can switch in on the turn Wartortle goes for Rapid Spin or Scald and either force it out or OHKO it with Thunderbolt. Rotom-F can use Wartortle to gain momentum with Volt Switch if you have no Pokemon immune to Electric.

**Setup Sweepers**: Pokemon that can set up, especially those behind a Substitute, such as Bouffalant, Poliwrath, and Calm Mind Serperior, can easily use Wartortle as setup bait and defeat it. When Wartortle is up against Serperior, Serperior can either use Giga Drain or predict the switch, get up a Substitute, and proceed to set up Calm Mind.

**Knock Off**: Wartortle is very Eviolite-reliant, and Knock Off can remove its Eviolite and allow other Pokemon to beat up Wartortle pretty quickly. If Wartortle uses Rapid Spin as a Knock Off user, such as Sneasel, switches in, Sneasel it is either going to Knock Off Wartortle's Eviolite or, if Wartortle switches out, the incoming Pokemon's item.

**Status**: As Wartortle lacks reliable recovery or cleric moves, status, especially poison from Toxic or Toxic Spikes users, such as Poliwrath, Pelipper, and Garbodor, can bring it down to low health pretty quickly. Pokemon such as specially defensive Altaria resists Scald and can absorb status effects due to Natural Cure; as such, it can easily get a Toxic off against Wartortle, forcing it to switch or get worn down.

**Haunter and Misdreavus**: Wartortle has access to Foresight for using Rapid Spin against Ghost-types; however, Misdreavus and Haunter both have access to Taunt and can easily predict the incoming Foresight. This stops Wartortle from using Rapid Spin against them and forces it to either switch out or take powerful hits.

Darnell you need to beef up C&C (as I recall you said you would punch yourself in the face if you heard that in a C&C thread :D)

In team options the first point needs to be that Wartortle fits on balance and stall, I think I told this to the previous writer but he never implemented it. I'll probably do more later :)

I think Protect should be in OO if you want that free extra turn of Toxic damage.
Wartortle's whole set is geared towards allowing it to pull off a successful spin and giving it utility throughout the match; Protect does nothing to help this.

Usage Tips:

- Explain why Wartortle shouldn't stay in for too long unless it can beat the opponent (ie. it loses momentum and is very passive)

Team Options

- Roselia never used Aromatherapy, instead you could say that it absorbs status for Wartortle

Other Options

- Haze is actually a pretty good option, and don't say that it's outclassed by Garbodor either because you can't really compare like that
- Yawn is more for forcing switches and preventing setup than putting stuff to sleep
- You rarely have to predict for CounterCoat. Just say that it is gimmicky and requires Wartortle to take heavy damage and doesn't aid in spinning

Checks and Counters:

- Add Misdreavus and Haunter, because some variants carry Taunt, which prevents Wartortle from using Foresight and can proceed to destroy it.
- I feel like "Status" needs better examples than Roselia. Roselia seems to fit in with Grass-types more because it rarely has a status move and it doesn't use TSpikes often.

Good work, implement these Darnell

Overview:

"Wartortle's good bulk is somewhat let down by its mediocre HP, that means that Wartortle works best on stall and balanced teams due to their ability to make up for the momentum loss with their walls." - having low HP has nothing to do with fitting on balance / stall or momentum loss

"Weak offensive stats and extreme set up bait that cause a huge momentum loss when Wartortle is sent in against offensive teams." - it's not just against offensive teams that momentum loss occurs, it is on offensive teams that the momentum loss matters.

Usage Tips

The last two points are pretty much the same thing, so you can merge them (and idk why you say to stay in when Wartortle is at low HP though)

(You should slash Seismic Toss over Scald if it could really be useful on this set. If you do that, also move scald to the fourth moveslot and move the sentence about Scald right before the one about Seismic Toss to properly reflect the set's move order.)

**Knock Off**: As Wartortle is very item Eviolite-reliant, and Knock Off can remove its Eviolite and allow other Pokemon to beat up Wartortle pretty quickly. Wartortle can use the turn to Rapid Spin as a Knock Off user, (AC) such as Sneasel, (AC) switches in. Sneasel is either going to Knock Off either Wartortle's Eviolite item or, if Wartortle switches out, the incoming Pokemon's, (AC) if it isn't gone already.

**Status**: As Wartortle lacks reliable recovery or cleric moves or cleric support, status, especially poison from Toxic or Toxic Spikes users, (AC) such as Poliwrath, Pelipper, and Garbodor, can bring it down to low health pretty quickly. Pokemon such as specially defensive Altaria can resist Scald and can absorb burns and poison status effects due to Natural Cure when switch. Altaria can get a Toxic off against Wartortle, forcing it to switch or get worn down.

**Haunter and Misdreavus**: Wartortle has access to Foresight for using Rapid Spin against Ghost-types; Pokemon however, (AC) Misdreavus and Haunter both have access to Taunt and can easily predict the incoming Foresight. This renders stops Wartortle from using Rapid Spin against them and forces it to either switch out or take powerful hits.

**Setup Sweepers**: Pokemon that can set up, especially those behind a Substitute, such as Bouffalant, Poliwrath, and Calm Mind Serperior, can easily defeat use Wartortle as it is easily used as setup bait and defeat it.

If (needs some rephrasing because it came off like an option/usage tip, which it obviously isn't) Wartortle can use uses Rapid Spin as a Knock Off user, such as Sneasel, switches in, (comma) Sneasel it is either going to Knock Off either Wartortle's Eviolite or, if Wartortle switches out, the incoming Pokemon's item, if it isn't gone already.

**Status**: As Wartortle lacks reliable recovery or cleric moves, status, especially poison from Toxic or Toxic Spikes users, such as Poliwrath, Pelipper, and Garbodor, can bring it down to low health pretty quickly. Pokemon such as specially defensive Altaria resists resist Scald and can absorb status effects due to Natural Cure; (SC) Altaria as such, it can easily get a Toxic off against Wartortle, forcing it to switch or get worn down.

Darnell Nice work, I really like how the overview explains its role and niche and detail, compares it with another Pokemon, and mentions its metagame shortcomings succinctly. As some feedback, you could've linked its lack of recovery to it being unable to consistently spin due to this, or the like, but overall a very good job.
