Warubiaru

[Overview]

  • Respectable Attack and Speed stats (117 and 92) yet poor special attacking prowess. (65)
  • Access to two excellent abilities; Intimidate and Overconfidence.
  • Effective Choice Scarf pokemon that can potentially sweep due to his Overconfidence ability.
  • Good offensive movepool with access to Earthquake, Pursuit, Stone Edge, and the semi-exclusive Trickery.
  • Has relatively poor defensive typing but with decent 95/70/70 defenses. (Intimidate can pick up the slack in terms of physical defense)
  • Weak to common priority. (Mach Punch, Aqua Jet, Ice Shard) and neutral to Bullet Punch.
  • Lack of access to excellent boosting moves like Dragon Dance and Swords Dance, but is capable of using Bulk Up to some success.
[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Crunch / Trickery
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: Pursuit
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Overconfidence / Intimidate
nature: Adamant
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

Set Comments:

  • Warubiaru is quite fast after a choice scarf boost, reaching 424 speed enough to outspace most of the metagame.
  • Excellent coverage allows it to revenge most of the tier.
  • Plays like similarly too Choice Scarf Tyranitar. In fact, Jolly Choice Scarf Tyranitar reaches the same attack stat as
  • Adamant Warubiaru and significantly less speed.
  • Overconfidence provides with an attack boost per kill, while Intimate lowers the attack of an opposing pokemon giving
  • Warubiaru an easier time at absorbing physical hits.
  • Weakness to common priority moves means that Warubiaru will have to fall back on teammates occasionally.
Additional Comments:

  • Gets good enough coverage with Earthquake and Stone Edge and is able to trap and kill dark weak pokemon with pursuit.
  • There isn't a good reason for running for running Jolly because there isn't anything notable in Warubiaru's speed tier. Timid Choice Scarf Heatran is in fact outsped, even with Adamant.
  • Trickery is unique 95 Dark Physical attack that uses the "targets" attack stat to deliver damage. In short, it's useful for powerful foes but weak against pokemon with poor attack stat. Crunch can be used as a weaker but more reliable attacking move.
  • Outrage is an option for KOing power Dragon pokemon and gets good enough coverage with Earthquake. (Dragon Claw is not powerful enough to OHKO most Dragon types)
Teammates & Counters:

  • Fighting Types are the greatest counters to Warubiaru. Breloom is an excellent counter due to his resistances to both of Warubiaru's STAB moves and common coverage move (stone Edge) while threatening him with Mach Punch.
  • Skarmory completely walls Warubiaru and sets up on him.
  • Bulky Water Types like Swamper, Suicune and even Gyarados are decent counters to Warubiaru as they can sponge most his hits and threaten him with a Super Effective Water type move.
  • Celebi is a decent teammate to Warubiaru, resisting his Fighting and Water weakness while Warubiaru can take Dark and Ghost aimed at her. Celebi can also deal with most of the bulky Waters and Fighting types while Warubiaru checks Tyranitar pretty well.
  • Pokemon who benefit from the removal of Ghost- and Psychic Types are good teammates for Warubiaru.
[SET]
name: Bulk Up
move 1: Bulk Up
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Crunch
move 4: Stone Edge
item: Life Orb
ability: Intimidate
nature: Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

Set Comments:

  • Unfortunately, Bulk Up is Warubiaru's only boosting move. Fortunately he has the tools to succeed with a bulk up set.
  • Intimidate allows Warubiaru to set up Bulk Up's on weak physical attacks.
  • Warubiaru Earthquake and Stone Edge form the always useful "Edgequake" combo and it gives Warubiaru excellent coverage.
  • Crunch is Warubiaru's most reliable Dark STAB move and can cover pokemon who resist the EdgeQuake combo. Trickery is not an option because after a bulk up, Warubiaru's attack stat is most likely going to be higher than the opponent.
Additional Comments:

  • Warubiaru has passable defenses and can opt for a bulkier and slower approach at sweeping with bulk up.
  • Taunt can be used to shut down most defensive pokemon and turn them into setup fodder.
Teammates & Counters
  • The counters in the previous set still apply, but frailer fighting types don't like taking a 1+ Earthquake. Fighting moves will still typically
  • OHKO Warubiaru even after a single Bulk Up boost.
  • Skarmory walks all of over it unless Taunt is used.
  • Bulky Waters (Suicune, Swampert etc) are still an effective stop to Warubiaru.
  • Pokemon like Scizor, and Genosect can give Warubiaru a hard time. Running a Choice Scarfed Magnezon or Heatran is recommended to remove these threats.
[SET]
name: Choice Band
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Stone Edge
move 3: Crunch
move 4: Pursuit
item: Choice Band
ability: Intimidate / Overconfidence
nature: Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

Set Comments:
  • Warubiaru can use Choice Band bolster his pretty good Attack, allowing him to get by his counters.
  • Good enough coverage between Earthquake, Stone Edge and Crunch.
  • Pursuit can be used to trap and kill Dark weak pokemon.
  • The ability is up to you, but Intimidate is more reliable. Overconfidence can help him sweep if manage to score a KO.
Additional Comments:
  • Dragon Claw gives Warubiaru some nice neutral coverage and it lets him kill some pokemon on the revenge kill.
  • An Adamant nature can be used for noticeably more power at the cost of speed.
Teammates and Counters:
  • Pokemon that counter the previous sets still apply.
  • Stronger Earthquake means that Fighting types and Bulky waters are going to have a tricker time dealing with you.
  • Skarmory has an easy time walling Warubiaru. Fortunately you can use a Magnezone to trap and KO Skarmory.
[Team Options]
  • Celebi serves as decent partner to Warubiaru and has decent defensive synergy with him.
  • Warubiaru is an excellent teammate for pokemon who require pursuit support. Zapdos is also an effective partner to Warubiaru, as he resists most of his weaknesses and threaten's most of his counters.
  • Genosect and Scizor are troublesome for Warubiaru as they both threaten to with an OHKO with their STAB moves of choice. Heatran is excellent at countering the above threats with his STAB Fire Blast.
  • A Magnezone could be used trap and KO the aforementioned without much trouble.
[Optional Changes]
  • Mean Look is an incredibly a risky option for Warubiaru. If you can manage to trap a pokemon that doesn't threaten you can set up a sweep.
  • Warubiaru can use Claw Sharpen set, but it's almost completely inferior to the Bulk Up aside from nice accuracy boost in Stone Edge.
[Counters]
  • Fighting types are excellent counters to Warubiaru, especially if they have a priority move. Unfortunately for Warubiaru, Breloom resists
  • both of his STAB moves, and has mach punch on top of that. Roopushin is also an excellent due to his good bulk and access to mach punch.
  • Warubiaru has a tough time getting past bulky waters, who all threaten with him with surf or Boiling water.
  • Skarmory completely walls Warubiaru. However, Bulk up sets can utilize Taunt + Bulk Up to actually beat Skarmory one on one.
[Dream World]
  • Warubiaru receives Anger Point as a Dream World ability. Anger point is a horrible ability and you should never pass up the other abilities for it. If you do consider it, a moveset consisting of Substitute, Earthquake, Crunch, Stone Edge and with the Salac Berry is your best bet.

Trickery needs a test to make sure that its base power isn't lowered. For now I'd keep Crunch as the main slash until we know for sure how Trickery works.

Why use Trickery on a Bulk Up set? After 1 Bulk Up your Attack is significantly higher than 99% of the opponents that will be coming in, so Crunch is so much more reliable and stronger in this case.
