[Overview]

With horrid stats in everything but HP, and a total of 8 available moves, one could easily assume Wynaut is a terrible Pokemon. However, Wynaut does have a niche in Shadow Tag, which allows it to be a great trapper. His decent HP stat and acceptable bulk with Eviolite equipped go a long way in making Wynaut an effective Pokemon, allowing it to easily revenge Choice-locked Pokemon and provide useful set-up opportunities for sweepers.

[SET]
name: Why Not in NU?
move 1: Encore
move 2: Counter
move 3: Mirror Coat
move 4: Tickle / Destiny Bond
item: Eviolite
ability: Shadow Tag
nature: Bold
evs: 4 HP / 152 Def / 148 SpD / 208 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]

This is the only set Wynaut can pull off, making it adept at killing Choice-locked attackers, as well as other weak attackers who cannot 2HKO it. Above average bulk in tandem with Shadow Tag allows Wynaut to easily trap any Pokemon and either kill it with the appropriate move, or Encore it to support the team. Encore is a great move that, while nerfed in the generation shift, effectively gives Wynaut complete control of the game, preventing other Pokemon from setting up in front of Wynaut, and also giving it a much easier time countering non-Choiced attackers. Counter and Mirror Coat are perfect moves for Wynaut, who would otherwise be unable to kill a single threat. Tickle is the primary option in the last slot, as it gives Wynaut a way to cripple slow walls that it otherwise could do nothing against. Destiny Bond is also an option, allowing Wynaut to play mind games with its opponent. It should be noted that Wynaut is generally too slow to use the attack before the opponent, making Destiny Bond dead weight at times.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EVs are designed to outspeed base 55s with no investment, such as Torterra, and the remaining EVs are split between physical and special bulk. Eviolite is the only item choice for Wynaut, as it gives it acceptable bulk, while Shadow Tag is also a must, as it makes Wynaut capable of doing its job. Encore provides great team support for set-up sweepers, such as Absol and Gorebyss. Wish support from Pokemon such as Alomomola is very useful, as it removes passive damage from Wynaut, thus allowing it to be as effective as possible.

[Other Options]

Wynaut literally has 3 other moves. These three moves are the great Splash, Safeguard, and Charm. All three options are infinitely inferior to the moves listed on the set.

[Checks and Counters]

There are some good "counters" for Wynaut. Any Pokemon that can OHKO or significantly damage it are great checks, effectively preventing Wynaut from doing its job. However, there are no true counters to Wynaut, as Shadow Tag stops one from bringing in a Pokemon of their choice. Nevertheless, Bug-type Pokemon, such as Armaldo and Pinsir, are great at crippling Wynaut with their STAB moves; Absol also threatens Wynaut with its powerful Dark-type STAB moves. It should be noted that Ghost-type physical attackers and Dark-type special attackers are immune to Counter and Mirror Coat, respectively.
