What is the Unofficial Metagame of the Month?

Unofficial Metagames serve as a catch-all term for a wide range of formats that are cart-legal but otherwise do not stand on their own as a fully-fledged format for any number of reasons. The UMotM serves to provide some of these metagames that can't support full year-round ladders with a monthly spotlight ladder. This month, the UMotM is 4v4 Doubles UU!

What is the concept of 4v4 Doubles UU?

While VGC is an incredibly popular format, its development as a Nintendo-run metagame results in a lot of differences from how the average Smogon metagame tends to be run. The largest difference on an organizational level is the lack of accompanying lower tiers, in the same way that OU has been joined by nearly half a dozen usage-based tiers, each eliminating the most used Pokémon of the one above it.

4v4 Doubles UU serves that purpose, relying on Pokémon Showdown! usage stats to remove some of VGC's most popular Pokémon to explore what a metagame without the best of the best being present would look like. However, as a Smogon format, 4v4 Doubles UU comes with the additional ability to tier the metagame, removing overpowered or uncompetitive presences like Annihilape and evasion-boosting moves to increase enjoyment and the chances of the better player winning.

Threats In 4v4 Doubles UU

Iron Hands | Okidogi

iron hands okidogi

With an intimidating wrestler cat, both Urshifu formes, and a number of fast offensive powerhouses threatening to shut down these bulky Fighting-types conspicuously missing, Iron Hands and Okidogi have risen to be the powerhouses themselves, combining strong Attack stats, good bulk, and a wealth of coverage moves to leave their mark on the metagame. However, these are not just wallbreakers with solid defenses as an added bonus, as both bring some level of utility to the field, such as Iron Hands's Fake Out and Okidogi's Knock Off.

With so many high-tier Fighting-weak threats, such as Brute Bonnet, Heatran, Iron Bundle, Ursaluna-B, and Tyranitar, it's rare for a turn to go by with either Iron Hands or Okidogi on the field unable to threaten significant damage, if not an outright KO. With additional coverage to bypass resistances or immunities, Okidogi and Iron Hands force considerable preparation in the builder and in-game to avoid being bowled over. However, unlike other Pokémon that boast such offensive pressure, these two have considerable defenses, making them difficult to remove from battle should they show up.

Speed Control

talonflame iron bundle sinistcha

For as much as speed control matters in singles metagames, it's functionally mandatory in a doubles metagame like 4v4 Doubles UU. Whether it's a matter of making sure your team is faster than your opponent's, making it slower than yours is, or flipping the field entirely on its head via Trick Room, walking into a match without any access to speed control can significantlu decrease your chances of winning before Team Preview even ends.

Tailwind is an exceptionally popular move in VGC, and it's no different here, with Talonflame joined by friends like Murkrow, Pelipper, the Hoenn Prankster bug duo, and even Latios and Iron Jugulis finding space to run the move. Speed reduction for foes comes in a number of different forms, such as Iron Bundle's Icy Wind breaking Focus Sash alongside a double Speed drop. Thunder Wave from Thundurus, Grimmsnarl, and Gyarados or Electroweb from Electabuzz can also serve as targeted Speed reduction that potentially lasts longer than the brief time Tailwind stays up. Last but certainly not least, Trick Room outright flips the Speed game on its head thanks to users like Sinistcha and Bronzong, with teams entirely dedicated to the strategy joined by "semi-room" approaches that use it as a secondary or reactive strategy.

Weather

articuno excadrill Archaludon

It shouldn't be terribly surprising that weather has a strong presence in 4v4 Doubles UU, with weather-related Pokémon often being limited to just weather teams and therefore struggling to meet usage barriers to avoid "dropping" to the tier. Here, however, these strategies can thrive either as secondary approaches or as the primary means of operation. With Alolan Ninetales, Tyranitar, and Pelipper serving as automatic setters for their respective weathers, and Thundurus and Murkrow handling manual sun setting, a number of weather-inclined Pokémon are capable of running amok.

Each weather has sweepers that can run away with the game if they're not properly countered, as they take advantage of the changes that their preferred weather provides to amplify their offenses. Articuno and Archaludon benefit from changes to certain moves, Excadrill and Protosynthesis Pokémon like Walking Wake and Slither Wing boost stats such as Speed and Attack, and others like Heatran simply rely on damage amplification for their preferred STAB attacks.

Setup Sweepers

With many of the strongest threats locked out of the metagame, numerous Pokémon can flourish as setup sweepers, using moves like Swords Dance and Nasty Plot to boost their offensive stats beyond the tier's usual level of defensive presence. While setup sweepers exist in VGC, with options like Nasty Plot Gholdengo and Calm Mind Raging Bolt making splashes at the highest level, a lack of some of the strongest defensive and utility options in 4v4 Doubles UU increases the reward of a successful boost.

With the usual presence of redirection and moves like Fake Out and Protect, a single wrong prediction, such as doubling into the wrong Pokémon, can cause a sweeper to snowball out of control. While it isn't an automatic game over if a foe successfully sets up, as with VGC, many 4v4 Doubles UU EV spreads are crafted for specific benchmarks and rolls, and a single boost can throw that preparation out the window.

Conclusion

4v4 Doubles UU serves a unique flavor, combining the fast-paced, cerebral gameplay of the classic VGC format with a focus on the less popular and less powerful Pokémon, dashed with a touch of Smogon sensibilities and tiering. While some Pokémon like Ursaluna-B and Volcarona may see more use in the occasional VGC regulation, in the current version of VGC that 4v4 Doubles UU inherits from, these former stars can join Pokémon that always seem to be the bridesmaids such as Talonflame or Arcanine, alongside Pokémon that were doomed from the beginning for being outclassed or unviable, like Torracat directly with Incineroar and Spectrier indirectly with Flutter Mane. 4v4 Doubles UU is the UMotM for the month of February and can be found as a ladderable format in the Ladder Spotlight section. You can discuss it in the forum thread, the Unofficial Metagames Discord, and the Unofficial Metagames room on Pokémon Showdown! See you on the ladder!
