Monotype Terastal is a format that lives up to its name; Pokemon in this metagame have access to full terastal. Your mon can become a new type not necessarily from your monotype. With new types at your disposal, new and even some unanticipated threats emerge from unexpected places!

Clauses
  • Endless Battle Clause: Players cannot intentionally prevent an opponent from being able to end the game without forfeiting.
  • Evasion Clause: A Pokemon may not have either Double Team or Minimize in its moveset.
  • OHKO Clause: A Pokemon may not have the moves Fissure, Guillotine, Horn Drill, or Sheer Cold in its moveset.
  • Same Type Clause: All Pokémon in a team must share a type.
  • Species Clause: A player cannot have two Pokemon with the same National Pokédex number on a team.
    • For example, using a team with two Koffing would break this clause.
    • Using different formes on the same team, such as Rotom-W and Rotom-C, also breaks the clause since they share the same Pokédex number (#479).
  • Sleep Clause: Limit one foe put to sleep
Frequently Asked Questions

Q: "If I choose monotype water, can I terastal into dark for example ?"
A: Yes !

Q: "Can I use the move Tera Blast as a new coverage ?"
A: Yes, as terastal is allowed, a mon that has a limited coverage can now extend its possibilities.

Q: "How does Protean/Libero abilities work with terastal ?"
A: For example with Meowscarada, if you terastal into an ice type, you will only have STAB boost on grass and dark as it's your former dual types and ice as it's your terastal. So moves like U-Turn or Play Rough will not be boosted anymore. You will also be locked into an ice mon with its resistances and weaknesses.

Q: "How does Adaptability work with terastal ?"
A: Two situations :
  • If you terastal into your own type, you will still have your boost plus the one from tera for a total boost of a 2.25 multiplier
  • If you terastal into another type, Adaptability gives the boost to the new type so you only have the regular STAB on your first type so a 1.5 multiplier boost and a STAB + Adaptability + Tera on the terastal type you have chosen so a 2.25 multiplier boost. (note that Crawdaunt tera water loses Adaptability boost on dark moves while keeping STAB but earn another boost on water moves)
Q: "If my opponent terastal their pokemon, what do Ditto transform into ?"
A: Ditto will transform into the regular type.s of your opponent's pokemon. For example, if Ditto transforms into tera Grass Heatran, it will be Fire / Steel.

Cresselia has been banned from terastal monotype due to its incredible bulk allowing it to benefit easily from tera poison giving only a weakness to psychic, not a very common coverage. With calm mind, stored power, draining kiss, moonlight and the possibility to run weakness policy supported by a screen setup, the mon was unbearable for this tier.
 
Terastal is a metagame where things were a bit too static. So some changes will be done.


First of all, I am glad to announce that boomp is joining terastal council.
Unfortunately Dieu Amphibien, Bka Onon and Mada do not show any interest staying in the council and step out.


The metagame is right now centralized like in regular gen9monotype around dragon which is overwhelming everything else. Especially because of two pokemons Latias and Raging Bolt. Both of them benefit too much of terastal mechanic especially with Dragapult being able to set up screens and U-Turn or Curse into the good sweepers alongside spreading status to ease setting up.
Latias :latias: with tera poison mainly is the same reason than Cresselia. Calm mind, Agility, Recover, Stored Power, Draining Kiss was way out of control and swept most of the games. Using weakness policy or even just leftovers, the natural bulk of this mon was enough to end the game alone.
Raging Bolt :raging bolt: is more silent on its own but tera grass or flying to play around ground moves that will come against it with its incredible special attack stat, calm mind a priority is a huge threat able to kill even ground types here.

On another note, Gliscor :gliscor: with tera normal offensively or tera steel and water defensively was too much on the edge.

By prevention, Latios :latios: with a movepool similar to Latias could be tried as a replacement even without access to Draining Kiss. We do not think it is healthy for this metagame.

So we unanimously decided to ban Latias, Latios, Raging Bolt and Gliscor.
