[SET]
Defensive Pivot (Rotom-Wash) @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Poison / Steel
EVs: 252 HP / 216 Def / 44 Spe
Bold Nature
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
- Will-O-Wisp / Thunder Wave
- Pain Split / Defog
[SET COMMENTS]
Rotom-W's unique typing, good utility options, and ability allow it to become a great defensive Pokemon capable of pivoting in wallbreakers using Volt Switch. It is also capable of burning physical attackers like Urshifu-R, Weavile, and Mega Mawile with Will-O-Wisp while also denying recovery from Leftovers from Pokemon like Landorus-T. It can also use Thunder Wave effectively, allowing its allies to outspeed the other team's wallbreakers like Gouging Fire, Mega Lopunny, and Hisuian Samurott. Although unreliable, Pain Split allows Rotom to have some form of recovery to avoid being chipped down. Rotom-W is also a great Defogger, as its ability to check common entry hazard setters like Landorus-T, Gliscor, and Heatran allows it to reliably keep hazards off short-term. Leftovers is the preferred item for Rotom-W, as it lacks reliable recovery. Tera Poison is useful for turning Rotom-W's only weakness into a resistance, granting an immunity to Toxic and dealing with Pokemon like Kartana and Great Tusk reliably. Tera Steel is also an option, as, along with the Toxic immunity, it grants an overall greater resistance pool, as well as being an emergency check to Tapu Lele, but the new weaknesses gained means Rotom-W can't take on Pokemon like Heatran and Mega Lopunny. The Speed EVs allow Rotom-W to outspeed uninvested Landorus-T. Rotom-W fits best on offensive teams that appreciate it giving teammates like Tapu Lele, Ogerpon-W, and Weavile opportunities to switch in and are fast-paced enough to where Rotom-W's lack of longevity is mitigated. Pokemon like Gouging Fire and Volcarona also appreciate Rotom-W luring in Grass-types, giving them a free switch-in and possibly a setup opportunity. Rotom-W's biggest weakness is its lack of reliable recovery, making it easy to deal with over time, so Rotom-W should be used more aggressively to make the most of its bulk, but putting Rotom-W on a defensive core with Pokemon like Ferrothorn and Iron Crown is useful to take on strong Grass-type Pokemon like Ogerpon-W and Rillaboom that Rotom-W cannot check. Landorus-T, Galarian Slowking, and the aforementioned Iron Crown all work well as partners, as they can form a VoltTurn core with Rotom-W that opposing teams can struggle to break.
