Draft Sandaconda

Status
Not open for further replies.
[overview]
**Draft Order**: Round 6 onwards

**Price Range**: 5-6 points

**Overview**: Sandaconda is an okay option as a cheap Ground-type if premier options are taken or too expensive. It has great physical bulk and utility in Stealth Rock, and it is one of the few Pokemon with access to Glare, dissuading would-be answers from switching in. Additionally, its support can be leveraged further by its two abilities in Shed Skin to let it act as a status absorber and Sand Spit to facilitate Sand Rush users and provide chip damage. Despite this, Sandaconda suffers from having poor Speed and Special Defense, which can easily be preyed upon. It also relies on Rest to maintain longevity, which is not reliable with Shed Skin, leading to further exploitation by foes. Additionally, it lacks pivoting and entry hazard removal options, which is often desired in late draft picks, making Sandaconda only a budget pick.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Physical Wall**: Using its high Defense stat, Sandaconda can be a check to some strong physical attackers. With access to a solid pool of utility in Glare and Stealth Rock as well as access to Rest + Shed Skin to keep itself healthy, it can be annoying to take down. It also has a serviceable Attack stat to whittle down foes, which can then allow its partners to wallbreak and clean once enough damage has been done. As another form of support, Sandaconda can utilize Sand Spit to set up sand to force residual damage to bulky foes to make it easier for its teammates to wallbreak or sweep.

**Bulky Sweeper**: If the opportunity allows it, Coil can allow Sandaconda to become a potent late-game sweeper. This set often uses Rest alongside Shed Skin to keep itself healthy and become very difficult to remove if it has enough boosts. It also has the niche option to boost its Speed using Scale Shot.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Earthquake

**Setup Moves**: Coil, Scale Shot, Iron Defense

**Utility Moves**: Glare, Stealth Rock, Rest, Substitute

**Coverage**: Stone Edge, Rock Slide, Rock Blast, Body Press, Fire Fang, Thunder Fang, Zen Headbutt, Iron Head, Skitter Smack

Niche Moves
========
**High Horsepower**: Sandaconda should run High Horsepower if it is expecting to go up against a foe utilizing Grassy Terrain, which weakens Earthquake.

**Sand Tomb / Wrap**: Sand Tomb and Wrap can be used to trap specific checks and deal continuous damage. This can also give Sandaconda a great opportunity to set up with minimal disruption.

**Rock Tomb / Bulldoze**: Rock Tomb and Bulldoze can be used as another form of speed control and valuable chip damage for Sandaconda's teammates to take advantage of later in the match.

**Endeavor**: Sandaconda can use Endeavor to weaken foes for its teammates to revenge kill after it has taken enough damage.

Common Items
========
**Rocky Helmet**: Sandaconda can utilize Rocky Helmet to chip down and punish pivots and physical attackers using its high Defense.

**Leftovers**: Leftovers gives Sandaconda more longevity while it's on the field to make use of its utility movepool to the fullest. This is also useful to keep itself healthy if it wants to setup.

Niche Items
========
**Heavy-Duty Boots**: As Sandaconda likes to switch to check threats, Heavy-Duty Boots allows it to enter the field without fear of taking damage from entry hazards.

**Mental Herb*: Given its low Speed stat, Sandconda can use Mental Herb to guarantee getting up entry hazards or inflicting foes with paralysis.

**Sitrus Berry**: Sitrus Berry allows Sandaconda to avoid getting 2HKOed, giving it an opportunity to set up Stealth Rock or paralyze a foe with Glare.

**Custap Berry**: As it has no reliable means of recovery, Custap Berry allows Sandaconda to use one more attack or Glare on a foe so that a teammate can revenge kill it afterwards.

**Eject Button**: Sandaconda can use Eject Button to safely pivot to Sand Rush users on the same turn that Sand Spit summons sand onto the field.

**Smooth Rock**: Sandaconda can use Smooth Rock to extend sand duration for late-game sand cleaners to take advantage of.

Tera
========
Sandaconda is not reliant on Tera to function, as its base Ground typing is sufficient enough to fulfil its roles, but it can be a decent secondary Tera Captain if no others are suitable. Tera Dragon is a good Tera type in order to boost the damage dealt with Scale Shot, turn a couple of weaknesses into resistances, and become a more deadly sweeper in the right circumstances. It's important to note, however, that Sandaconda is too slow and needs time to get itself going to utilize this offensive Tera to the best of its ability. Defensively, Tera Water, Steel, and Fairy can be used to check specific threats and become harder to remove with Coil. Finally, Tera Ghost can be used to block Rapid Spin.

Draft Strategy
========
Sandaconda should be drafted if a team lacks a Ground-type late into the draft or needs additional utility and bulk to take the burden of higher-tier partners. It is generally outclassed by higher-tiered Ground-types that have access to more utility and better stats. Therefore, it is important that the draft considers of teammates with access to pivoting and high damage output so that Sandaconda is able to fully support its team with entry hazards and status.

**Sweepers**: Sandaconda does its best setting up its partners to go in for the sweep late-game using Stealth Rock, spreading paralysis, and sometimes setting sand for residual damage. Pokemon with priority such as Palafin and Urshifu-R or fast cleaners such as Iron Valiant and Iron Bundle are good partners for it.

**Fast Pivots**: Frail Pokemon such as Greninja and Meowscarada appreciate Sandaconda's presence in order to pivot it, and let it take incoming hits.

**Special Walls**: As Sandaconda lacks Special Defense, it appreciates partners to take on strong special attackers in the meta. Pokemon such as Galarian Slowking, Latias, and Primarina are good partners to consider.

**Sand Rush Users**: Although not a stellar option, Excadrill and Houndstone may appreciate Sandaconda's ability to set up sand with its Sand Spit ability in certain matchups in order to help clean up late-game.

Checks and Counters
========
**Special Wallbreakers**: Sandaconda can easily be preyed upon by strong special attackers such as Darkrai, Latios, and Landorus. While they have to be wary of Glare, they can easily overwhelm it via their superior Speed stat and threaten an OHKO.

**Lum Berry / Substitute**: Given its reliance to spread status with Glare, Lum Berry can easily be teched onto wallbreakers and sweepers to check and deal heavy damage to Sandaconda. Substitute can also be used to avoid Glare altogether, giving the foe more momentum during the match.

**Taunt / Encore**: Sandaconda can be disrupted easily by Taunt and Encore users, limiting its utility while it's on the field.

**Grass-types**: Grass-types such as Rillaboom, Ogerpon, and Zarude can easily switch in and threaten Sandaconda with their STAB combination and Ground resistance, forcing it out.

**Opposing Bulky Setup Sweepers**: As Sandaconda has no phazing moves, it can struggle to deal with bulky Pokemon that can set up against it with either Bulk Up or Calm Mind. Annilhape, Hatterene, and Slowbro are examples that can set up reliably against it.

**Draft Order**: Round 6 onwards

**Price Range**: 5-6 points

**Overview**: Slithering its way in, Sandaconda is an okay budget option as a Ground-type for your draft. It has great physical bulk, coupled with its useful utility move pool in Stealth Rock and the 100% accurate move to paralyze foes in Glare, dissuading would-be answers to switch in reliably to check it. I feel like there's a better way to word this. You'll note on specific moves later but can still allude to Glare dissuading switch-ins in less words. Additionally, its support can be leveraged further by its two in abilities in Shed Skin to act as a status absorber, and Sand Spit to facilitate Sand Rush users and provide chip damage, although this is less common. Despite this, Sandaconda suffers from having a low Speed I feel like 71 speed is more middling than low and Special Defense stat which can easily be preyed upon, as well as having to relying on Rest to maintain longevity, which foes can take advantage of during a match if Shed Skin does not activate. Might be more easily readable to split this sentence and mention that Rest + Shed Skin is unreliable at best as a sole healing option. Additionally, it lacks pivoting and removal options, which is often desired during the latter drafting stages, therefore landing Sandaconda to only be a budget pick.

Common Roles
========
**Physical Wall**: Using its high Defense stat, Sandaconda can be a check to some of the strongest physical attackers in the meta. With access to Glare to disrupt foes, access to Stealth Rock to chip down foes, and access to Rest + Shed Skin to keep itself healthy got any synonyms to access?, it can be annoying to take down. Sandaconda also has a serviceable Attack stat to whittle down foes, which can then allow its partners to wallbreak and clean once enough damage has been done.

**Bulky Sweeper**: If the opportunity allows it, the combination of Coil + Scale Shot can allow Sandaconda to become a deadly late-game sweeper. This set often uses Rest alongside its Shed Skin ability to keep itself healthy and become very difficult to remove if it has setup enough turns. Sandaconda could function with just Coil, so Scale Shot could be mentioned as a bonus instead of a requirement or even as a different type of sweeping set. Iron Defense + Body Press for teams without a Fighting-type switch-in might also be worth the mention but I'm less sold on that.

**Sand Setter**: Although not as practical, Sandaconda can utilize its Sand Spit ability to set up Sand to both force residual damage and facilitate Sand Rush sweepers for the late-game.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Earthquake, High Horsepower

**Setup Moves**: Coil, Iron Defense Idk if Scale Shot counts as Setup or Coverage but I would lean toward Setup imo

**Utility Moves**: Glare, Stealth Rock, Rest

**Coverage**: Stone Edge, Rock Slide, Rock Blast, Scale Shot, Body Press, Fire Fang, Thunder Fang, Zen Headbutt, Iron Head, Skitter Smack

Niche Moves
========
**Sand Tomb**: Sand Tomb can be used to trap specific checks and deal continuous damage. This can also give Sandaconda a great opportunity to setup with minimal disruption. Is it worth noting Wrap can do the same thing for Flying-types and Levitate pokemon? Turning would-be checks into setup fodder?

**Rock Tomb / Bulldoze**: Something something speed control for self AND teammates something something

Common Items
========
**Rocky Helmet**: Sandaconda can utilize Rocky Helmet to chip down and punish pivots and physical attackers using its high Defense.

**Leftovers**: Leftovers give Sandaconda more longevity whilst its on the field to utilize its utiltiy movepool to the fullest. This is also useful to keep itself healthy if it wants to setup.

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: As Sandaconda likes to switch to check threats, Heavy-Duty Boots allows it to enter the field without fear of taking damage from entry hazards.

**Loaded Dice**: On sweeper sets, Loaded Dice allows Sandaconda to deal more damage with Scale Shot and Rock Blast.

Niche Items
========
**Mental Herb*: Given its low Speed stat, Sandconda can use Mental Herb to guarantee getting up hazards or paralysis.

**Chesto Berry**: As Rest is a common move on Sandaconda, a guaranteed wake-up call in the form of Chesto Berry can be used after Rest without having to wait for Shed Skin to activate.

**Eject Button**: Sandaconda can use Eject Button to safely pivot into Sand Rush users as it activates its Sand Spit ability to summon sand onto the field.

Smooth Rock is definitely niche for Sand Spit endgames. I feel like Choice Band / Damage boosting items are worth a note in Niche to help boost Sandaconda's damage on switch-ins, although choice items would be heavily prediction reliant.

Tera
========
Sandaconda is not reliant on Tera to function, as its base Ground typing is sufficient enough to fulfill its aforementioned roles, however it can benefit from being a secondary Tera capatain if no others are suitable. Tera Dragon is practically its best Tera type in order to boost the damage dealt with Scale Shot, and become a more deadly sweeper in the right circumstances. A sentence on the best defensive Tera types to enable Wall sets to be more flexible and Coil Rest sets to win is worth a mention; types like Water, Poison, Fairy, Grass, even Ghost to spinblock for itself maybe. It's important to note, however that Sandaconda is too slow and needs time to get itself going to utilize Tera to the best of its ability.

Draft Strategy
========
Sandaconda should be drafted if your draft lacks a Ground-type at the latter stage, or if you are in need for additional utility or bulk to take the burden of your higher-tier partners. It is generally outclassed by higher tiered Ground-types that have access to more utility and reliable recovery outside of Rest. Therefore, it is important that your draft considers of teammates with access to pivoting and high damage output, so that Sandaconda is able to fully support its team with entry hazards and status.

**Sweepers**: Sandaconda does its best setting up its partners to go in for the sweep in the latter course of a match using Stealth Rock, paralysis and sometimes sand for residual damage. Pokemon with priority such as Palafin and Urshifu-Rapid-Strike, or fast cleaners such as Iron Valiant or Iron Bundle are good partners for Sandaconda.

**Fast Pivots**: Frail Pokemon such as Greninja and Meowscarada would appreciate Sandaconda's presence in order to to pivot into it, in which Sandaconda can take on the damage aimed at is frailer partners.

**Special Walls**: As Sandaconda lacks bulk on the special side, it appreciates partners to take on strong special attackers in the meta. Pokemon such as Galarian Slowking, Latias and Primarina are good partners to consider.

**Sand Rush users**: Although not a stellar option, Excadrill and Houndstone may appreciate Sandaconda's ability to set up sand with its Sand Spit ability in certain matchups in order to help cleanup late game.

(repeat as necessary)

Checks and Counters
========
**Special Wallbreakers**: Sandaconda can easily be preyed upon by strong special attackers such as Darkrai, Latios and Landorus-I. While they have to be wary of Glare, they can easily overwhelm Sandaconda via their superior Speed stat and threaten an OHKO.

**Lum Berry**: Given its reliance to spread status with Glare, Lum Berry can easily be teched onto wallbreakers and sweepers to check and deal heavy damage to Sandaconda.

**Grass-types**: Grass-types such as Rillaboom, Ogerpon and Zarude can easily switch in and threaten Sandaconda with their STAB combination and Ground resistance, forcing Sandaconda out. Pokemon such as Rillaboom, Ogerpon and Zarude can easily come in and threaten Sandaconda.

I feel like bulky setup can also beat Sandaconda since it doesn't have access to phazing; Mons like Hatterene and Slowbro can set up Calm Mind or faster mons like Annihilape using faster Bulk Up.

AMQC, not 1/2 after making edits. Just offering some suggestions. Very good start, love seeing the snake get love.

Thanks for the AMQC, added quite a lot of ur suggestions but I did not add in the following, unless QC1 & 2 disagree:
  • Did not remove the line that Sandaconda is a budget pick, as there are other Ground-types that are far more desirable with better utility, pivoting and reliable recovery.
  • Did not mention Iron Press as Coil already boosts Defense, Coil is just the better setup option but in specific niche matches, Iron Press may be better but again, don't think it's worth mentioning.
  • Did not mention Choice Band/damage boosting items because I think it's too niche to be mentioned.

Common Roles
========
**Physical Wall**: Using its high Defense stat, Sandaconda can be a check to some of the strongest physical attackers in the meta. With access to a solid pool of utility in Glare and Stealth Rock, as well as access to Rest + Shed Skin to keep itself healthy, it can be annoying to take down. Sandaconda also has a serviceable Attack stat to whittle down foes, which can then allow its partners to wallbreak and clean once enough damage has been done.

**Bulky Sweeper**: If the opportunity allows it, the combination of Coil + Scale Shot can allow Sandaconda to become a deadly use a word more like competent late-game sweeper. This set often uses Rest alongside its Shed Skin ability to keep itself healthy and become very difficult to remove if it has setup enough turns. It also has the more niche option to boost it's Speed with Scale Shot.

**Sand Setter**: Sandaconda can utilize its Sand Spit ability to set up Sand to both force residual damage and facilitate Sand Rush sweepers for the late-game. See what QC2 says but I think this is too niche. We can chat about this on Disc.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Earthquake, High Horsepower move to niche and explain this is used in Grassy Terrain.

**Setup Moves**: Coil, Scale Shot, Iron Defense

**Utility Moves**: Glare, Stealth Rock, Rest, Substitute

**Coverage**: Stone Edge, Rock Slide, Rock Blast, Body Press, Fire Fang, Thunder Fang, Zen Headbutt, Iron Head, Skitter Smack

Niche Moves
========
**Sand Tomb/Wrap**: Sand Tomb or Wrap can be used to trap specific checks and deal continuous damage. This can also give Sandaconda a great opportunity to setup with minimal disruption.

**Rock Tomb/Bulldoze**: These moves can be used as another form of speed control and valuable chip damage for Sandaconda's teammates to take advantage of later in the match.

**Endeavour**: just mention its good to weaken foes when you are low.

Common Items
========

Would move to top of niche since shed skin is good into tspikes and only spikes really threaten it.

**Loaded Dice**: On sweeper sets, Loaded Dice allows Sandaconda to deal more damage with Scale Shot and Rock Blast. would also move to niche idt its that reliably good although usable yes

Niche Items
========
**Mental Herb*: Given its low Speed stat, Sandconda can use Mental Herb to guarantee getting up hazards or paralysis.

**Sitrus Berry**: mention it can use this to avoid 2hkos and get off rocks, glare, etc.

**Chesto Berry**: As Rest is a common move on Sandaconda, a guaranteed wake-up call in the form of Chesto Berry can be used after Rest without having to wait for Shed Skin to activate.

**Custap Berry**: good to move first and get one last glare or attack off when low considering it has no healing.

**Eject Button**: Sandaconda can use Eject Button to safely pivot into Sand Rush users as it activates its Sand Spit ability to summon sand onto the field.

**Smooth Rock**: Sandaconda can use Smooth Rock to extend sand duration for late-game sand cleaners to take advantage of.

Tera
========
Sandaconda is not reliant on Tera to function, as its base Ground typing is sufficient enough to fulfil its aforementioned roles, however it can benefit from being a secondary Tera captain if no others are suitable. Tera Dragon is its best a good Tera type in order to boost the damage dealt with Scale Shot, turn a couple weaknesses into resistances, and become a more deadly sweeper in the right circumstances. Common Roles
========

========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Earthquake, High Horsepower move to niche and explain this is used in Grassy Terrain.

**Setup Moves**: Coil, Scale Shot, Iron Defense

**Utility Moves**: Glare, Stealth Rock, Rest, Substitute

**Coverage**: Stone Edge, Rock Slide, Rock Blast, Body Press, Fire Fang, Thunder Fang, Zen Headbutt, Iron Head, Skitter Smack

Niche Moves
========

========

Niche Items
========

Tera
========
It's important to note, however that Sandaconda is too slow and needs time to get itself going to utilize this offensive Tera to the best of its ability. Defensively, Tera Water, Steel, and Fairy can be used to check specific threats and become harder to remove after Coil and Tera Ghost can be used to block Rapid Spin. just generally in this analysis you def way overhyped scale.

Draft Strategy
========
Sandaconda should be drafted if your draft lacks a Ground-type at the latter stage, or if you are in need for additional utility or bulk to take the burden of your higher-tier partners. It is generally outclassed by higher tiered Ground-types that have access to more utility and better stats and reliable recovery outside of Rest.

**Sand Rush users**: Although not a stellar option, Excadrill and Houndstone may appreciate Sandaconda's ability to set up sand with its Sand Spit ability in certain matchups in order to help cleanup late game. could add lycanroc midday maybe but meh

Checks and Counters
========
**Special Wallbreakers**: Sandaconda can easily be preyed upon by strong special attackers such as Darkrai, Latios and Landorus-I. While they have to be wary of Glare, they can easily overwhelm Sandaconda via their superior Speed stat and threaten an OHKO.

**Lum Berry / Substitute**: Given its reliance to spread status with Glare, Lum Berry can easily be teched onto wallbreakers and sweepers to check and deal heavy damage to Sandaconda. also explain sub can avoid glare.

**Taunt and Encore**: Sandaconda can be disrupted easily by Taunt and Encore users, limiting its utility whilst its on the field.

**Grass-types**: Grass-types such as Rillaboom, Ogerpon and Zarude can easily switch in and threaten Sandaconda with their STAB combination and Ground resistance, forcing Sandaconda out.

**Opposing Bulky Setup Sweepers**: As Sandaconda has no phazing moves, it can struggle to deal with bulky Pokemon that can setup against it with either Bulk Up or Calm Mind. Annilhape, Hatterene and Slowbro are examples that can setup reliably against Sandaconda.

Implemented QC1 ty, I still kept the sand setting role; it may not be a stellar option but dealing residual damage on foes that are hard to take down is another form of support that I feel should still be mentioned. Can deffo chat on discord and if QC2 feels strongly against it, I'll remove it.

For QC2 when they read it, I've deleted and merged the sand setter role to highlight its usage for Sandaconda to support its teammates.

(AP) It also relies on Rest to maintain longevity (RP) Speaking of the move, Rest + Shed Skin , (AC) whichis not a reliable form of recovery with Shed Skin, leading to further exploitation by foes. Additionally, it lacks pivoting and entry hazard removal options, which is often desired during the latter drafting stages in late draft picks, therefore landing making Sandaconda to only be a budget pick.

Common Roles
========
**Physical Wall**: Using its high Defense stat, Sandaconda can be a check to some strong physical attackers in the meta. With access to a solid pool of utility in Glare and Stealth Rock (RC) as well as access to Rest + Shed Skin to keep itself healthy, it can be annoying to take down. Sandaconda It also has a serviceable Attack stat to whittle down foes, which can then allow its partners to wallbreak and clean once enough damage has been done. As another form of support, Sandaconda can utilize its Sand Spit ability to set up sand to force residual damage to bulky foes to make it easier for its teammates to wallbreak or sweep.

**Bulky Sweeper**: If the opportunity allows it, Coil can allow Sandaconda to become a potent late-game sweeper. This set often uses Rest alongside its Shed Skin ability to keep itself healthy and become very difficult to remove if it has setup enough turns boosts. It also has the niche option to boost its Speed using Scale Shot.

Tera
========
Sandaconda is not reliant on Tera to function, as its base Ground typing is sufficient enough to fulfil its aforementioned roles, however but it can be a decent secondary Tera Captain if no others are suitable. Tera Dragon is a good Tera type in order to boost the damage dealt with Scale Shot, turn a couple of weaknesses into resistances, and become a more deadly sweeper in the right circumstances. It's important to note, however, (AC) that Sandaconda is too slow and needs time to get itself going to utilize this offensive Tera to the best of its ability. Defensively, Tera Water, Steel, (AC) and Fairy can be used to check specific threats (RC) and become harder to remove with Coil. Finally, Tera Ghost can be used to block Rapid Spin.

Draft Strategy
========
Sandaconda should be drafted if your draft a team lacks a Ground-type at late into the latter stage (RC) draft or if you are in need for needs additional utility or and bulk to take the burden of your higher-tier partners. It is generally outclassed by higher tiered higher-tiered Ground-types that have access to more utility and better stats. Therefore, it is important that your the draft considers of teammates with access to pivoting and high damage output (RC) so that Sandaconda is able to fully support its team with entry hazards and status.

**Sweepers**: Sandaconda does its best setting up its partners to go in for the sweep in the latter course of a match late-game using Stealth Rock, spreading paralysis, (AC) and sometimes setting sand for residual damage. Pokemon with priority such as Palafin and Urshifu-Rapid-Strike (RC) Urshifu-R or fast cleaners such as Iron Valiant or and Iron Bundle are good partners for Sandaconda it.

**Fast Pivots**: Frail Pokemon such as Greninja and Meowscarada would appreciate Sandaconda's presence in order to to pivot into to it (RC) in which Sandaconda can and let it it take on the damage aimed at is frailer partners incoming hits.

**Special Walls**: As Sandaconda lacks bulk on the special side Special Defense, it appreciates partners to take on strong special attackers in the meta. Pokemon such as Galarian Slowking, Latias, (AC) and Primarina are good partners to consider.

**Sand Rush Users**: Although not a stellar option, Excadrill and Houndstone may appreciate Sandaconda's ability to set up sand with its Sand Spit ability in certain matchups in order to help cleanup late game clean up late-game.

Checks and Counters
========
**Special Wallbreakers**: Sandaconda can easily be preyed upon by strong special attackers such as Darkrai, Latios, (AC) and Landorus-I Landorus. While they have to be wary of Glare, they can easily overwhelm Sandaconda it via their superior Speed stat and threaten an OHKO.

**Taunt and / Encore**: Sandaconda can be disrupted easily by Taunt and Encore users, limiting its utility whilst its while it's on the field.

**Grass-types**: Grass-types such as Rillaboom, Ogerpon, (AC) and Zarude can easily switch in and threaten Sandaconda with their STAB combination and Ground resistance, forcing Sandaconda it out.

**Opposing Bulky Setup Sweepers**: As Sandaconda has no phazing moves, it can struggle to deal with bulky Pokemon that can setup set up against it with either Bulk Up or Calm Mind. Annilhape, Hatterene, (AC) and Slowbro are examples that can setup set up reliably against Sandaconda it.
