not to be pretentious but yall should really read this… C.H.A.T. (Come Here for All Talk)

Yknow considering the ever-mounting disillusionment with algorithm-centered social media sites and nostalgia for the early internet I really do feel like the conditions are in place for some sort of forum/personal website revival movement courtesy of stuff like Neocities but I don't know what is necessary to fully light the spark. Maybe Reddit doing something really, really stupid?
Elon's catastrophic handling of the website formerly known as Twitter has helped, if only because a lot of the people who formerly used the website for networking now have personalized Substack publications. To be honest, though, I doubt that we'll ever see the forum and personal website revive to more than a fraction of their former status. A lot of young people on the Internet today don't remember a time before the big algorithms, and they'll probably just go to successor websites should the established names fumble the bag (e.g. people going to Bluesky/Threads after Elon's takeover of Twitter). The forum will have a niche place on the Internet for a while to come — we're posting on one right now, after all — but the Web 2.0 gigamachine isn't going back in the box.

My frame of reference is the return of vinyl. Obviously the boom days are gone, it wont ever be the industry leader again, but don't underestimate the affection of young people for "old-timey" aesthetics egged on by the wistful reminiscing of their nostalgic elders

All we need is for Taylor Swift to make 20 nearly identical copies of the same old-school webpage, and we'll be in business!

Reddit already did something really stupid last year but redditors are too addicted and brainrotted to leave this site. There's also been several attempts at alternatives for reddit, but they all devolved into posting "this is so much better than reddit!" or flocks of people with... Questionable believes populating these alts. An example of this would be Voat, which was exclusively used for alt right posts

But I like your idea. I think forums like Smogon may grow over the years beyond their current scope. Something like MySpace or Neocities coming back would be great

Reddit in particular gets out of a lot of trouble by being fragmented into so many insular sub-communities. The company might be doing some boneheaded shit, but most users won't care as long as their preferred shitposting subreddit isn't disrupted. This is in stark contrast to the website formerly known as Twitter, where Elon's neuroses are everyone's problem.

You're completely right, which is why "something really, really stupid" would basically have to be a mass subreddit ban of unprecedented scale

something really, really stupid could be a business choice too. Reddit's monetization is already questionable, they could do serious cash with the userbase they have, but they are awful at capitalizing that. If they go iliquid, maybe there could be some niche to fill

I really wanna see a serious film critic muster a case in favor of the Disney live action remakes. Obviously they're shit, obviously there's no argument for them having any value over the originals in their current state, I just wanna see a sort of devil's advocate thought experiment type thing where they attempt to envision a scenario where redoing all these classic animated films in live action could've had some real artistic merit that revitalized the renaissance catalog in a worthwhile way

Twitter rn is literally just 4chan vs old Twitter in a battle royale, plz can we get out of this hellscape

I tried to use Tumblr but there just aren't enough people, and Bluesky is too under developed, and they're already kinda fumbling imo

Bluesky just isn't really Growing

I just really wish there was a social media where artists could share their material

Twitter and Tumblr aren't viable anymore. I really want to share what I make but there's no proper platform for that at this moment
Naw Twitter is def viable for art in a cynical way, you just gotta draw a character in a meme and boom you win a fanbase for a day

Do this over and over and get five trillion followers, up your commission price, GG

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have never been forced to make a Twitter for marketing purposes. I just post here and let the big websites rot.

rn im disabled and therefore jobless, and therefore dont got shit to do

ive deleted and reinstalled twitter a few times in the last few months, its just not easy to not get bored.

the last week has been worse bc of a flare up so im like, way more bed ridden than usual, so i am struggling to find entertaining shit and inevitably twitter peeks my interest unfortunately

Fair enough. I catch myself scrolling the subreddits that are just screenshots of posts from other websites more than I would care to admit. In my defense, I don't have an account, so I do have to pick my own forums to browse instead of just getting an assortment of content slopped onto my home page.

cant look at comments

cant use twitter search function

cant look at qrts

i was twitter account free for like 3 years. he fucked that up

I've got you covered, friend.

is it back up? i was trying it for a bit albeit tedious, but then it went down for some reason
Most instances were shuttered after Elon restricted the ability of guests and basic accounts to access posts. This one still works great; I'm pretty sure that it uses a paid account to scrape, but I can't be certain.

A few other nitter instances remain as well. These have to cycle through tons of old/free accounts to read posts from to avoid one single point of failure.

It's so funny how there were rulers and powerful, influential people throughout history who did everything to be remembered, only to be forgotten and their legacy to be decimated by the sands of time

But some merchant that sold shitty copper and was rude to the servants of his customers is still remembered to this day, thousands of years after his death

You know that is a good point. For example in World War 2 we only hear about the Hideki Tojo guy when it comes to who led the Japan during that time. Why don't we ever really talk about the actual emperor of Japan?

The moral of the story: In the really long term, who gets remembered by history is often arbitrary, and you shouldn't stress about it. Also, for crooked traders who offer bum deals, the hate stretches on forever.
