Draft Sandslash

[overview]
**Draft Order**: Round 7 onwards

**Price Range**: 1-2 points

**Overview**: Sandslash is a decent budget option, since it offers much-needed role compression for teams lacking a Ground-type as well as entry hazards and removal. It can also occasionally take things into its own claws and sweep under sand. Unfortunately, what massively hold it back are its stats, which leave a lot to be desired aside from its solid Defense. Its mediocre Speed often leaves it vulnerable to being knocked out before it can fully utilize its utility, and its poor Special Defense frequently forces it to switch out, allowing opponents to gain positive momentum. It is also heavily outclassed by higher-priced Ground-types with better stats and coverage.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Utility**: Sandslash is mostly viable as a utility Pokemon thanks to its access to a variety of support moves such as Stealth Rock, Spikes, Rapid Spin, and Knock Off.

**Bulky Setup Wallbreaker**: Thanks to its solid Attack, Sandslash can work as a bulky setup wallbreaker thanks to its good physical bulk which gives it opportunities to set up a Swords Dance. With Rapid Spin it can outspeed and break down foes during the mid-game.

**Sand Sweeper**: With Sand Rush, Sandslash can become an effective late-game sweeper. Paired with Swords Dance, it can raise its Attack to threatening levels. To further enhance its offensive presence, damage-boosting items like Life Orb and Soft Sand can be utilized to increase damage output.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Earthquake, High Horsepower

**Setup Moves**: Swords Dance, Curse, Agility

**Utility Moves**: Stealth Rock, Spikes, Rapid Spin, Knock Off, Brick Break, Super Fang

**Coverage**: Rock Slide, Stone Edge, Iron Head, Leech Life, Gunk Shot, Poison Jab, Shadow Claw, Aerial Ace

Niche Moves
========
**Smack Down**: Smack Down allows Sandslash to threaten Ground-immune Pokemon that otherwise would wall it.

**Bulldoze**: Sandslash can use Bulldoze to check some threats that may expect some easy setup opportunities.

**Sandstorm**: Sandslash can set sand by itself, although it much prefers a teammate to do it.

Common Items
========
**Leftovers**: Leftovers give Sandslash passive recovery and enhance its longevity, which is valuable when it is used in a defensive role.

**Sitrus Berry**: Sitrus Berry offers more value than Leftovers if Sandslash is not expected to survive for long.

**Rocky Helmet**: Thanks to its high Defense, Sandslash can punish physical attackers with Rocky Helmet, especially ones that use U-turn for momentum.

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Heavy-Duty Boots protect Sandslash from taking chip damage from entry hazards, especially Toxic Spikes.

Niche Items
========
**Damage-boosting Items**: Damage-boosting items such as Soft Sand and Life Orb make Sandslash a more formidable offensive threat under sand.

**Focus Sash**: Focus Sash gives Sandslash a guaranteed turn to set Stealth Rock or Spikes if they need to be up at all costs.

**Resistance Berries**: Rindo, Passho, and Yache Berry can all allow Sandslash to take a super effective hit, giving it an extra turn to revenge kill a foe or set or remove entry hazards.

**Assault Vest**: Assault Vest can be used to help with Sandslash's Special Defense, especially on utility sets that utilize Rapid Spin and Knock Off.

Tera
========
If Sandslash is able to activate Sand Rush reliably, it can be a decent budget choice for a secondary Tera Captain. But otherwise, it's better to consider other options, as its Ground typing is usually sufficient for utility sets. Tera Grass is particularly valuable, as it flips the Water- and Grass-type matchups in Sandslash's favor while also giving it an edge against fellow Ground types. It can also use Tera Ground, Rock, and Dark to boost its existing coverage and Tera Ghost to prevent foes from using Rapid Spin.

Draft Strategy
========
Sandslash is a complementary piece, offering valuable entry hazard control, support, and potential wallbreaking and sweeping power. While it shouldn't be the centerpiece of any draft, it can occasionally enable the rest of the team with its support.

**Specially Defensive Pokemon**: While Sandslash has decent physical bulk, its low Special Defense makes it vulnerable to special attackers. It greatly benefits from a specially defensive partner that can cover its weaknesses. Pokemon such as Hisuian Goodra, Scream Tail and Galarian Slowking make excellent partners for Sandslash.

**Sand Setter**: Although its utility is generally preferred, Sandslash can be a decent sand sweeper when paired with a sand setter. Tyranitar is the best choice thanks to its Dark typing, access to Knock Off, and ability to take special attacks well.

**Other Entry Hazard Setters**: Sandslash shouldn't be the sole entry hazard setter. Complementing it with other hazard setters enhances team flexibility, allowing each to perform other roles as needed. This reduces the burden, ensuring it isn't over-reliant on setting hazards alone and isn't forced to come to nearly every match.

Checks and Counters
========
**Special Attackers**: Any decently powerful special move poses a significant threat to Sandslash, even ones that are resisted. Pokemon like Terapagos, Hydrapple, and Iron Bundle can easily withstand its attacks and pressure it in return.

**Physically Bulky Pokemon**: Sandslash often faces challenges when dealing with physically defensive Pokemon that can revenge kill it or inflict it with status, such as Weezing, Rillaboom, and Dondozo.

**Ground-immune Pokemon**: Sandslash struggles significantly against Pokemon that are immune to Ground, including Flying-types such as Corviknight, Gliscor, and Zapdos. Pokemon with Levitate like Rotom-W and Hydreigon can also completely avoid Earthquake and retaliate with powerful moves like Hydro Pump or Draco Meteor, respectively.

**Draft Order**: Late round 6 onwards Round 7 onwards

**Price Range**: 3-5 1-2 points

**Overview**: Sandslash is a solid budget option for teams wanting to fill the gaps for a cheap price. Sandslash offers the much-needed role compression for teams lacking entry hazards, hazard removal, an Electric-type immunity, and the option to take things in their own claws and sand sweep. Unfortunately, what massively hold Sandslash back are its stats, which, except for solid defense stat, leave a lot to be desired. Its average Speed also causes it to get KOed before making use of its utility, and its incredibly low Special Defense forces it to swap out often, allowing foes to gain positive momentum. Feel free to put in your own words but these points are def worth mentioning as downsides

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Utility**: Sandslash shines as a utility Pokémon, thanks to its access to a variety of support moves such as Stealth Rock, Spikes, Rapid Spin, and Knock Off. This combination allows it to set up hazards, clear them from its side of the field, and disrupt opponents by removing their items. Its Ground typing also grants it an Electric-type immunity, making it a reliable switch-in to Electric-type attacks and a valuable asset to teams needing hazard control and disruption.

I'd maybe add bulky setup sweeper - it can just run a lot of bulk and swords dance and be a solid mid-game wallbreaker

**Sand Sweeper**: With its ability Sand Rush, Sandslash can double its Speed under Sandstorm, turning it into an effective late-game sweeper. When paired with Swords Dance, it can boost its mediocre Attack to threatening levels, allowing it to clean up weakened teams with ease. However, it requires careful team support, particularly in setting up Sandstorm and eliminating its counters, to fully capitalize on its sweeping potential.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Earthquake, High Horsepower

**Setup Moves**: Swords Dance, Curse, Hone Claws

**Utility Moves**: Stealth Rock, Spikes, Rapid Spin, Knock Off, Brick Break, Super Fang

**Coverage**: Knock Off, already in utility Rock Slide, Stone Edge, Iron Head, Leech Life, Gunk Shot, Poison Jab, Shadow Claw, Gyro Ball, Aerial Ace

Niche Moves
========
**Scorching Sands**: Despite Sandslash's special attack stat, it could be used in certain utility sets in hopes of crippling threats with a burn. this is never getting used

**Throat Chop**: This could be used instead of Knock Off if the opponent relies on things like Sylveon's Hyper Voice or Incineroar's Parting Shot. too niche

**Smack Down**: Gives a niche option to threaten Pokemon that are immune to Earthquake.

**Bulldoze**: Useful to check some threats that will expect some easy setup opportunities.

**Sandstorm**: Sandslash can set sandstorm by itself, although it would much prefer for someone else to do it.

**Agility**: Could be used as a surprise factor, when Sandstorm is not desirable or possible for some reason. move to common setup

Common Items
========
**Leftovers**: Provides passive recovery, enhancing Sandslash's longevity, especially when used in a defensive role.

**Pinch Sitrus Berry**: Could offer more value than Leftovers if it's expected for Sandslash to not survive for long.

**Rocky Helmet**: Thanks to its high defense, it can punish physical attackers, especially those who use U-turn for momentum.

**Life Orb Damage-boosting Items**: Increases Sandslash's damage output, making it a more formidable offensive threat when using Swords Dance. move to niche

**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Always useful to protect Sandslash against other hazards, especially Toxic Spikes.

Niche Items
========
**Focus Sash**: Useful if you need to set Stealth Rock or Spikes at all cost.

**Resistance Berries**: Rindo Berry, Passho Berry, and Yache Berry may allow Sandslash to take a super-effective hit.

**Assault Vest**: Could be used as an attempt to help with Sandslash's Special Defense, but sacrifices Hazard or Sword Dance Setting. especially on utility sets that utilize Rapid Spin and Knock Off.

Tera
========
If Sandslash is able to activate Sand Rush reliably, it's a decent budget choice for Tera Captain, with a variety of options to choose from. Without that, it's probably better to consider other options, as Ground type is usually sufficient for utility sets. Tera Grass is particularly valuable, as it flips the Water and Grass matchups in Sandslash's favor while also giving it an edge against fellow Ground types. Tera Dark helps against Ghost types attempting to block Rapid Spin, and boosts Knock Off damage, and makes it (slightly) harder for Prankster users to stop Sand Rush sweep. Tera Ghost is useful for preventing the opponent's hazard removal via Rapid Spin. Tera Ground boosts Earthquake damage to dangerous levels. Tera Steel and Bug are fine options to make respective coverage better. Lastly, Tera Rock is an underrated choice that synergizes well with Sandslash—providing a strong STAB Rock/Ground combo while boosting its Special Defense in Sandstorm.

Draft Strategy
========
Sandslash is a complementary piece, offering valuable hazard control, support, and potential wallbreaking and sweeping power with sand. While it shouldn't be the centerpiece of any draft, it plays an important role in enabling the rest of the draft team.

**Entry Hazard-weak Offensive Pokémon**: Since Sandslash provides entry hazard removal for the team, Pokémon that are weak to hazards pair well with it. Pokémon like Kyurem, Dragonite, Enamorus-Incarnate, or Chi-Yu appreciate this support. Sandslash shouldn't be the primary remover so idt this is really worth including here

**Specially Defensive Pokémon**: While Sandslash has decent physical bulk, its low Special Defense makes it vulnerable to special attackers. It greatly benefits from a specially defensive partner that can cover its weaknesses, especially if it can throw Wish as well. Pokémon such as Hisuian Goodra, Scream Tail, or Sylveon make excellent partners for Sandslash.

**Sand Setter**: Although Sandslash can set Sandstorm itself, it's much more efficient to have another Pokémon handle this role Although its utility is generally preferred, Sandslash can be a decent sand sweeper when paired with a sand setter. A great option is a Pokémon with the Sand Stream ability. Tyranitar is the best choice, thanks to its Dark typing, access to Knock Off, and ability to take special attacks well. Another reliable method is using a Prankster Pokémon like Klefki to set Sandstorm. Little too much emphasis on sand, especially when sandslash's utility is almost always more important. I kept the other mentions but qc2 might remove mentions of sand altogether

Checks and Counters
========
**Special Attackers**: Any decently powerful special move poses a significant threat, even if it's resisted by Sandslash's typing. Pokémon like Milotic, Hydrapple, or Iron Bundle can easily withstand Sandslash's attacks and pressure it in return.

**Ground immune Pokémon**: Sandslash struggles significantly against Pokémon that are immune to its primary STAB move. This includes Flying-types, such as Corviknight, Gliscor, and Zapdos. Levitate users like Rotom-Wash and Hydreigon can completely avoid Earthquake and retaliate with powerful moves like Hydro Pump or Draco Meteor, respectively. Additionally, some Pokémon may use Air Balloon, which can catch Sandslash off guard. nothing is running air balloon to counter a sandslash

Add physically defensive pokemon - without sd it basically gets walled by a lot of mons, & it won't use sd often since it wants its utility

**Negating Sand**: Even if Sandslash activates Sand Rush, it's not that hard to counter it. For example, Prankster users like Tornadus can easily change the weather and threaten Sandslash with a Rain-boosted Weather Ball. Pokémon with strong priority moves like Greninja's Water Shuriken, Palafin's Jet Punch, or even Urshifu-Rapid Strike's Aqua Jet can quickly take it down. Protect could be used to waste Sandstorm turns. Additionally, any Choice Scarf or Booster Energy user with a base Speed with or above 104 can outspeed a max speed +2 Jolly Sandslash.

Implemented, thanks!
Great points all around. However, I respectfully disagree with the suggestion to lower Sandslash's price range to 1-2 points. I believe this significantly undervalues the utility Sandslash offers and could potentially mislead others about its effectiveness in a draft environment.
A 1-2 point range is typically reserved for Pokémon with very niche use or those that serve as never-to-be-use filler picks. Sandslash is just not that. It brings a combination of valuable tools to the table. Its access to Rapid Spin, Stealth Rock, Spikes and Knock Off offers an important utility that can fit into a variety of team compositions. Additionally, Sandslash's physical bulk allows it to serve as a solid check to many physical attackers, providing defensive value that is not easily dismissed. All of this makes it useful for more than one match per season.
Besides, from my personal experience- and I understand that everyone’s experiences differ- I genuinely don't recall ever seeing a league where Sandslash is valued lower than 3 points in my entire draft league career. It's usually that 3-5 point range.

Youve already said this in the overview.

**Bulky Setup Wallbreaker**: Against particularly ground-weak teams, Sandslash could work as a bulky setup wallbreaker thanks to its good physical bulk and access to Swords Dance. With base 110 Defense and sufficient investment in bulk, Sandslash can absorb physical hits effectively, giving it opportunities to set up a Swords Dance. Once boosted, its base 100 Attack becomes formidable, allowing Sandslash to break through mid-game walls and defensive Pokémon. Would prob say its strong attack stat in conjunction with rapid spin for speed boosting allows sandslash to be a midgame breaker.

Last part feels wordy, we get it has swords dance, id moreso mention you can run damagge boosting items like life orb or soft sand on these sets

Implemented, thanks again!
However, the price range still doesn't sit well with me, as I've never seen Sandslash valued that low in my experience. I've participated in numerous leagues over the years, and this seems unusual. That said, I understand that Smogon draft leagues might operate differently from the ones I'm used to, which could explain the discrepancy.

In WPF, DGBA, and Trick House, Sandslash was priced at 2 points and typically undrafted. Smogon always has it at 1-2 as well. It has massive opportunity cost, since many higher priced ground-types bring much more value to a team, and its below-average attack along with its terrible speed & special defense really hold it back.
