Sports NFL Thread: 2024-25 Season

If i ran a team now i'll suck a few years and tell my owner "Let's build the offensive line and defensive line, then worry about QB and weapons."
Look at some of the QBs balling out now, you can sign them guys in between the years you "Building."

I know the patience is almost nonexistent with owners (ask Panthers fans) but thats how it should be done.
Instructions unclear, traded our entire draft and most of next year's draft to move up for Ricky Williams.

im just happy we preserved honour on our names after that start tbh...

enough games have passed that i might do a pr after this week. one fun thing about the exercise is, when the most popular standards seem to be just "present teams in order of win percentage and shuffle around a bit", its hard for me to dosuper badly in comparison!

edit that you'll probably find funny: i couldn't bear to follow the game after a point, so seeing your post merely say we "lost" instead of "got turned into sedimentary rock" alerted me that it went less bad than it could have!

To quote Seth Rollins anytime his Bears lose, I'ma borrow his energy to say: "I. Hate. Football." on my end/fandom lol

I called out today too smh lol.

I hate how artificial everything is. The presentation, the music, even the commentary team. It wants so bad to be something. It doesn't help that they get boring-bad matchups up every week.
In terms of game quality, I think the problem is twofold:
  1. They get a ton of divisional matchups, but an intense divisional rivalry like Cowboys/Giants doesn't necessarily make for a great game when both teams are stumbling.
  2. The shorter rest period means more injury risk and sloppier play all around.
Even though I am a football fanatic, I really think we ought to launch this thing into the sun. It's a bad product, and the injuries make it bad for the sport as a whole. It prints money for the NFL despite the problems, so I doubt it'll happen, but a man can dream.

We did it! The losing streak is no more! It nearly killed me because we can't put opponents away, but we did it. The first half of this game represented the theory of what this team can be when all goes according to plan: blazing offense complimented by tough defense. Unfortunately, our defense couldn't get off the field in the second half, and that level of gassed combined with bad penalties on the corners (stop fucking grabbing, Arnold!) to make this game far more cardiac than it had to be. Still, a win is a win. I expect a more thorough domination against the Cowboys after our bye.

Also, Goff had a perfect game while taking a safety, so that's epic.

Spoke to my lady cus she's a massive Commanders fan "I feel like yall make most sense for DaVante, yall or the Ravens" (and as a DMV baby with the Washington fandom she was like "Don't say Baltimore" LOL) that said as a member of a Jets vs Bills family with both linked as well I think it'd be incredible there too, more so with Josh than Aaron, and yes, I know... history.
But he left Green Bay because of fear of post-Rodgers as much as to be on his childhood team with his college friend. So as someone that hears the Jets side as much as the Bills side every weeks - you're gonna give up draft capital for someone that might be gone in a year or two for someone who already showed he don't wanna play in a place with uncertainty, twice?
**And don't get me wrong if he landed on the Jets I'd be down to see it**

I'm not blaming DaVante at all, if anything that's why I'm saying if it was Jets vs Bills, Bills make more sense since Josh is younger. A-Rodg probably plays 2-3 years more at MOST (4 years he'd be where Brady was when he called it quits).
If I was DaVante I'd be like WAS or (hate to say) BAL, please.
I know Pittsburgh in there too but does he really wanna deal with "So what happens with Wilson and Fields if one or both of them have a few clunkers?" (obv right now Fields been playing well, but Wilson is looming with his health)

I forget are you a Lions head or was it someone else?
They're one of those teams I'll never claim in sense of like "Pat my back if they do well" cus I would still want my team to beat em, but a team I always had a soft spot for back to my youth just loving Barry since im a late 80s baby lol.
I watched that game on my off day and was like "Hell yeah, good job!" --- got lots of friends from Detroit being into the music scene from there (ICP and going to shows and such) so I've shared many drinks and fun times with Detroit friends lol.

I am indeed the resident Lions fan. We may currently be getting trolled out of the division lead by the resurgent Sam Darnold, but breaking Seattle's iron grip has me feeling optimistic.

Speaking as a Seahawks fan myself, you guys earned that win. Goff played out of his freaking mind and this team has quite a few weak spots that your coaching staff quickly picked up on and took advantage of. Truth be told, I actually haven’t watched very much of “our” team this year for the same reasons as every other team (that is to say, sports betting and fantasy football is lowkey killing my interest in football entirely) but on a fundamental level, I can pick out a good football team when I see one.

As for the situation with the Vikings, we’ve seen this before and we’ll see it again, where some random team comes along and looks like they’re going to win a championship after just four weeks or so. Currently the Vikings are the only team remaining that are undefeated both outright and against the point spread, but history shows fierce trends against teams in such a position. Recall the 2016 Vikings team as a possible analog to what we’re seeing now- that team started off white-hot and ended up at .500 missing the playoffs. With a Vikings win and a Chiefs loss in Week 5, Minnesota could also find itself as the next victims of one of the NFL’s most overlooked “curses”, so to speak- the last remaining undefeated team each season hasn’t gone on to win, several times even reach the Super Bowl in almost 20 years. Without cheating, let’s see if any of you can guess who was the last team to do this. Your prize for getting this question right? Uhhh… I dunno, I’ll give you a cookie or something. I’ll figure something out.

I still wouldn't pick them to win the Super Bowl or anything like that, but I also won't be surprised if they're for real. Quarterback was the big problem; most people, myself included, wrote them off when they had to start Darnold for the whole season. If the recent performances from the people's MVP aren't a fluke, and this is actually what he looks like all the time with a squad as talented as the Vikings around him, I could see them never letting go of their grip on the division. Only time will tell, though. Maybe this will be another iteration of that 13-win Vikings squad from a couple years ago that was cardiac every game and lost to Daniel Jones in the playoffs.

As it turns out, we do have one tool we fans can use to help us figure out whether or not a team is good. Following their Week 4 win, the Vikings currently sit at a league-best 15.7 Pythagorean Expectation. There’s a chance some of you might not know what that means. Basically, it’s a super complicated way of analyzing a team’s point differential through X amount of weeks of the season to determine how many wins that team should have relative to the competition. If you’ve ever heard someone say something like “this 13-4 team is playing like a nine win team”, it’s possible that this is what they’re referring to. That being said, this is definitely not a sign that Vikings are a 15-win caliber football team. Extremely high PEs are actually pretty common early into the season like this; heck, the Saints also reached over a 15.0 PE coming off of those first two games they played, and now they’re sitting at 2-2 through four.

Fortunately, we can look at the other end of the spectrum to see how this statistic is actually supposed to be used. You would think that the team with the lowest PE right now would be the only 0-4 team, the Jaguars, but if memory serves me right, the 1-3 Dolphins actually have a lower PE than anyone else through four weeks; upon further inspection it’s easy to see why, since said Jaguars team was their only win so far and the Dolphins have, on average, lost by more points per game than the Jaguars have. Switching focus back over to the Vikings and why they could be a postseason contender, their 15.7 PE is reflected in two upset wins over in-conference playoff contenders and statement wins over the Giants and a debatably upset Texans game. Things could always change, of course, but for now, this team’s gotten their work done more efficiently than anyone else. I’m willing to bet that a strong NFC North title race is going to come down to them and your Detroit Lions, as the Lions have a solid resume of their own through the first four and I trust the Lions to maintain good fundamentals through the later half of the season, whereas I can see the Vikings losing steam during a difficult second half of the schedule.

the vikes are a team notorious for starting strong and fading late. they have one playoff win in the past 5 years (4 years ago OT wild card win). their early seaon success is enough for me to call them a real contender to make noise, but i still think their long-term projection is weaker overall than the two teams with proven recent success in the division, the lions and packers. the packers are limping in injury h*ck, and they were middling to start last season to explode in the playoffs. i'd be careful about underestimating them.

the texans have given me no reason to believe real contenders. minnesota's win is notable for its magnitude, though. nevertheless, as you allude to, there are dangers to using it as a base for PE here; that is the one (one) game where minnesota won against a decent team by more than one possession.

I was going to caution against counting out the Packers, yeah. If Jordan Love can return to full power, they can easily storm back to contending for the division. It's too early to make predictions beyond which three teams the division race will come down to, at any rate. I'll decide how I feel about these Vikings in the long run when I see how they do against the Lions in a few weeks. We know what experience says with regards to the Vikings and the later part of the season, but as any investor can tell you, it's fallacious to assume that past performance indicates future results. Experience says that the Lions aren't allowed to have two good years in a row, and we just vanquished a team that we've been snake-bitten against since the Vikings' quarterback was Christian Ponder. You can turn narratives around in this league, and teams have gone deep into the playoffs under stranger circumstances.

The one time I skip TNF, it's an offensive shootout that ends in a walk-off overtime TD. Just my luck.

I followed the score just off phone notifications till i got outta work and it still looked like Bucs had it when I stopped paying attention cus my shift was near end.
Get into my driveway, see the score and I'm like "Oh wow lemme che-... -sees Kirk threw for 509 yards-" WELL HOLY HELL! LOL

Kudos to Kirk in all honesty, especially after all the talk around him since his injury and the draft.

i saw a tweet today that said something about Aaron Rodgers crawling like hes down in fortnite" today lol (and i'm sitting there watching these games with both Bills and Jets fans) and ofc the Jets heads got mad, and the Bills fans threw jokes (tbf it was funny in imagery but I do feel bad for A-Rodg, people questioning his cadence that's worked for 15+ years, getting his ass beat like when he got folded 3 ways and ya see his face, still testing his body/rehab to see what he can/can't do).
then the bills game and the offense and well - the hours of jokes from the bills heads to the jets were short lived cus the jokes had to be got back before mutual sad drinks and dinner lol.
football, a uniting force lol

Nothing brings two people together quite like watching their sports teams skid. It's a magical thing.

The funniest thing is you know what united them most in the past?

Giants beating the Patriots in two superbowls. :totodiLUL: (Not cooking Pats fans, if anything it cooks them)
And they have no love lost for Giants fans, when Giants fans come over they tell em "12 pack & a snack plate" LMAO.

I got love for both teams cus I love all the people and both sides and as I get older and people pass the bonds just solidify and ill stand on "Yes I know I'm an oddity the 2 teams I grew up on are rivals but I get dead ones I grew up with watching these things before I even understood what "Allegiance" is - it was just fun."
I choose to keep that. ----- Seems a cop out I know (deep down I'd probably say I'm slightly more Bills) even as I get older I just enjoy that even if people roasting one another theyre together in each others company.
Football itself is the bond.

FACT: 95% of general managers stop one firing before Aaron Rodgers returns to MVP form.

I won't defend Saleh like he was a good coach; he wasn't from a *HEAD COACH* sense... that said the Jets defense always been the power of the team and they been consistently if not top 10ish, still solid (obv some bad showings like any other team) but the issue was the offense.
The fact Saleh got let go and the next report to come out was "Hackett is safe" shows all you need to know in regard to who runs the Jets rn.
It ain't even Woody (tbf probably better off with anyone else regardless), he just signs the checks. lol
Saleh was never set up to have a chance from Zach Wilson to Aaron Rodgers dictating the team structure, Hackett wasn't a sign he wanted, to Aaron's injury (tbf that's the chaos variable - no one's fault), to Aaron not being around to really build any team chemistry on field wise (hence the "cadence" situation) even after the injury.

Defensive coach (who their side did the job at least, we can give him that), worst OC, and a (and I always enjoyed A-Rodg but) seemingly unengaged with the actual work when it's not demanded to build team chemistry QB with a bigger cache than you? Yeah he was doomed.

hearing people speculate on the next Jets head coach:

Me: lol interim aint even had a chance to coach yet.
Media: Ben Johnson
Fam: Would be ideal.
Me: Offensive coach won't happen cus Hackett
Media: Mike Vrabel
Fam: Fits the team perfectly always had that hard nosed defense.
Me: Won't happen cus Hackett if he's smart
Media: Bill Bellichick
Fam: ...Ain't no way.
Me: You right; there is in fact no way. Why would any self respecting Jets fan even think that? lol

Just my read of things.
