Game Freak hit with another hack, info leaking

XY, for all its faults, feels pretty complete

The Powerplant is the only thing that feels off to me, and ofc the fact that yeah Zygarde never got its game

The scope doesn't seem that large until you realize they had to 3D model every single Pokemon for this game to ship lol
The transition from 2d to 3d was always going to be pretty big, I don't really fault them for that

With that out of the way, I always feel like it's kind of a shame that XY never really made the most out of the mega evolution gimmick, setting everything else aside (because I have a lot to say about XY) that was its single biggest fault (literally none of the major bosses except lysandre at the end use mega evolution. rip)

that is probably the single biggest factor for why the game feels incomplete to me, anyways

I could personally delve into my grievances/criticisms of X/Y but that seems more apt for a different day; regardless, something tells me more kalos mons and more mega evolutions were in the works and then got cut (and that's not talking about the plot/lore elements for kalos, if any)

looking forward to the discourse once we reach that part of the Big Leak

The dynamic camera in the XY prototype sure is flashy, but I could see it becoming annoying after a while lol. I think the final version is a good compromise.

Interestingly, Pikachu seems to have an idle pose for when it's low on HP. I wonder if when they deciding on which animations to prioritize, they cut this one out so battles wouldn't look so "violent"?

people are thinking about it in the one video they see and not how it'd look for a 20 hour JRPG

the actual secret to "dynamic" battle feel in a turn based RPG is just good UX, Persona 5 doesn't get fancy with its camera angles but people feel the UX really hard and half the screen is flashy

this is something Legends Arceus pushed harder and it works well

With the shift to 3D models, and how Creatures was handling that, I don't necessarily think they'd have spent a lot of time making scratch models. I can easily see going through all their drafts prior to creation and only did minor touch ups later.

Feel like our best bet would be concept art. Maaaaybe the scrapped bergmite midle evolution got far enough along, but I dunno if I can see it getting to the model phase and then scrapping it after that.

Ah speaking of concept art, I'm surprised we didnt get high resolution concepts for N & other BW1 characters that Masuda showed off ages ago. Maybe it just hasn't been released, though?

Oh yeah I agree, for XY onward any beta Pokemon designs coming forward hinges on concept art leaks unless they happened to slap in placeholder jpegs in place of models or something. If anything Mega Evolutions are still the most plausible thing to find evidence of because theoretically partially implemented Mega Stones could be in there maybe.

And yet sadly I doubt this will do much on the people who have already decided that it was true and used it to attack the people who they were gonna attack anyways. Seriously, Genwunners have become such a boogieman in this fandom. You never really see them much yet you have plenty of fans who are willing to blame literally everything they don't like with the franchise on them.

Genwunners haven't functionally existed since the early 2000s.

Oh believe me they're still all over the place.
Expecially if you go by any Pokemon related Twitch chat, I can promise half of it will be praising anything before gen 5 as the holy grail and trashtalking everything released in last 5 years.

Actually wait that's also half of this forum....

From a programmer perspective the best bet is reference data for Pokemon that never made it in

ie. why people think Mega Jynx exists, but More

I genuinely hope that the Game Freak employee who was a victim to the phishing scam is ok. I cannot imagine the stress and the weight of the guilt for being partially responsible for the biggest leak in your company's history. Their information is now public knowledge and they probably will incur a lot of ire in the industry. Whoever they are I hope they can make it through this

Yikes, happy XY anniversary to GameFreak. I would like some LZA news soon too, but this is a bit extreme! Hopefully the hackers stick to their claim that they won't reveal info on LZA and beyond despite apparently not giving any thought to releasing employee data...

As for the meat of what we're allowed to talk about here, I thought getting to see all the beta designs from the Spaceworld demo was pretty cool, but a lot of the gen3 beta sprites definitely left me feeling like GameFreak made the right decisions when cutting most of them or redesigning the ones that didn't get cut. e.g. the final Absol and spoink lines are definitely better than the early work.

I mean, I'm sure most of the cut lines would eventually have been reworked into something more palatable, it's just that they don't have the immediate appeal of the spaceworld mons like Kotora (round tiger) or Norowara (straw doll ghost).

In gen 5 there are a few beta designs that I like better than the final: elgeyem with the tail looks more menacing, and the timbur line looks like it was originally heading in a more interesting direction than it landed in. I gotta say, though, I didn't expect beta tank-inspired hydreigon to basically just be hydreigon with functional feet...

So far we only have a few pieces of art for gen 6 -- interesting to see Hawlucha was originally blue, and Klefki had a weird face. I definitely think 8 prefer Klefki's final face.

I hope we get some beta art for gen 7, and hopefully some scrapped ultra beasts or regional forms. I remember there was apparently some work done for a regional snorlax, would be neat to find out what it was meant to be. Would also love if there was some lore and more art for the mythicals revealed.

If anyone is trudging through the docs themselves and comes across anything about Marshadow, please share. :)

what do we think abt this (based on datamine)

personally i think it'd still be pretty bad in gen 6, and it'd definitely be bad in gen 7 with all of the ultra beasts

It’s pretty clear from the beginning that Mega Evolution aren’t made for balance to begin with. If SpA and SpD were swapped, and increased Speed (-15 SpA to +15 Speed), maybe Mega Jynx could be a threat in Gen 6 with powerful SpA, immunity to Stealth Rock and a Poison status / Burn / Toxic absorber, and high Speed.

Certainly not something that’ll be missed in Gen 6 / Gen 7 OU nor VGC if that statline is kept as is.

aww, they were so close, yet so far, pains me to see they dropped the ball with this one (legitimately, jynx is one of the more simple mega evos to make a stat spread for, how the fuck do you get THAT)

I mean, I imagine it'd be usable, probably in a lower tier somewhere (both in Gen 6/Gen 7), but damn that stat spread is not saving that godawful defensive typing LOL

now that I think of it were there any mega evos whose stat spreads were changed between development and release

Early color schemes for Volcanion and Hawlucha, also a slightly different look for Klefki
I think the final hawlucha is the better one, red just suits it more. It's a nice blue though.
Klefki's final face was for the best

I think Volcanion being red sells the fire/water more, but that color scheme would look great as the shiny instead of the gold (not that we're getting shiny any time soon...)

I was looking at this Early Pokémon List on tcrf, and it seems to allude to more cut beta pokémon.

Some highlights:
Fire16バシャーモ BlazikenFireFlyingStage 3 of the Fire starter Pokémon. ← Game fowl.Event

Blaziken being Fire/Flying at this stage (Combusken is pure Fire).

Fire19?????Fire????
Fire20?????Fire????
These blank spaces were eventually used by Torkoal and a pre-evolution for Torkoal that was later scrapped.
Apparently more hints at a Torkoal pre-evo. Looking at documents from the 2020 gigaleak, it seems like Nosepass took the pre-evo's slot.

Flying50コソラトリKosoratoriFlyingFlyingTall Grass
Flying51コソラトリKosoratoriFlyingDragonStage 2 of Kosoratori.Tall Grass
Swablu is still using its November 2001 name, while Altaria is using the name of the scrapped white dragon Pokémon. It's not clear if the design had changed by this point.
More evidence that the white bird dragon was indeed redesigned to become Altaria

Steel73?????SteelSteelStage 1 of the futakuchi Pokémon.Tall Grass
Steel74?????SteelSteelStage 2 of the futakuchi Pokémon.Tall Grass

Mawile being planned as a 2 stage line. I guess the idea was scrapped when they decided on making Mawile the version counterpart to Sableye.

Normal100エボロットEvolottoNormalNormalPokémon that can evolve into whatever.Tall Grass?

I suspected this pokémon would have a randomness based evolution like Wurmple, but not  this random. This is insane. Would put it in a similar vein as Ditto and Smeargle.

Ice111?????IceIceStage 1 of Boyatto.Tall Grass
Ice112ボヤット BoyattoIceIceTall Grass

Boyatto (the weird bigfoot/yeti thing) was planned to be included and get a pre-evolution. I'm assuming they were replaced with the Snorunt line, since they aren't found in this document.

???113サンサン Sansan????????サンサン(炎)→ザーザー(水)→ゴーゴー(電気)Sansan (Fire) → Zaazaa (Water) → Gougou (Electric)Event?

A very unclear entry. The names refer to the proto versions of the Castform forms. Apparently one of them was going to be Electric-type instead of Ice.

Confirmed127フナクイン FunaquenWaterWaterPuddle
Confirmed128WaterWaterStage 2 of Funaquen.Puddle

These two are really making me scratch my head. I have no idea what pokémon they refer to, and yet they are listed as confirmed, like other early gen III pokémon such as Kecleon and Wailmer

There is another document like this, but it hasn't been translated yet on TCRF

Edit: formatting broke horribly after posting, hopefully this is more readable

This actually looks pretty damn cool. I can see the flood of comments saying we were robbed of the 3DS games looking like this instead of the less 'dynamic' look the battles ended up in the final product, but at the same time, considering that Gamefreak had trouble optimizing shit for those games (Gen 7 notoriously lagged on older 3DS models, for instance), that's probably why they cut back?
