Love the art style on those guys. In general they’re all really great designs, particularly the dodo/fossil mon. It’s a shame it was cut. I assume Tyrantrum eventually replaced it?

The megas look great, love the ancient dragon vibe charizard has. Venusaur seems to have been what the struggled the most with - interesting how different those designs are to what we eventually got. There’s also another Blastoise design floating around:

Also wondering if the flamingo mon was originally a spritzee evo?

No. That's correct English. It means she's a model and an idol.

Edit: Also, lol, Khu is trying to 'leak' things again tangentially related to the Teraleak. Why do people believe this guy again after he basically showed everyone he has no sources anymore?

Well, we'll have to see if the leaks vindicate some of the things he said about SV regarding features he hinted at but later said were scrapped, like more special tera forms or the npc that could set speed ivs to 0. The still-unaccounted for Pokemon from his hint about the number of new mons in the DLC (which was otherwise correct) was hinted to be movie-related, and the leak did reveal a scrapped movie with an apparently new Pokemon on the poster.

Certainly the thing that strained Khu's credibility the most were their hints at the next game after SV DLC leaned very heavily towards BW remakes, but I am willing to consider the possibility that the person people dislike for being a troll was being a troll (though if that were the case Khu could have done a better job at making hints that more clearly pointed to Kalos in hindsight). Alternatively, I suppose it's possible we could find out there were indeed plans for BW remakes that got cancelled/shelved/postponed (though I guess we might not be able to talk about them in this thread unless they were outright canceled).

Something tells me these beta / alpha Mega designs were scrapped due to Game Freak feeling that it would overlap too much with one of the regular Evolution design philosophies (the “drastically different one but still recognizable” type and not the “just got bigger” type), thusly streamlined Mega Evolution designs to be “small but important changes” so that it is crystal clear that, mechanically, it’s a form change and not true Evolution.

This ended up having Mega Evolutions getting mixed reception for their design, but at least it makes sense for Mega Kangaskhan, Mega Absol, Mega Sableye, Mega Houndoom, and the likes.

Looking at all the Venusaur concepts, it's interesting how hard they went in on being a frog.

It does seem that Venusaur as a frog has been in the cards for a while after they decided it shoudl be....Something and not just an unidentified weird plant monster that can barely move, but not something they really did much with or did much to sell (the run cycle is the one very distinct tell). But all these attempts go in on it. Understandable why they'd pivot to megas being "the base form, but Extra" for both "these are temporary Power Ups" and likely dev pipelien reasons, but also a bit sad to see them drop it entirely.

Considering that Charizard has a Dragon version to fit more in line with what 8 year olds thought Charizard was, maybe the idea for Venusaur fanservice was to play into it in the same way, but they just didn't like it

Looking at the concepts again, I wonder if the conceit for the mega starters was also "making them look old". The venusaurs literally either have actual beards or neck patterns meant to resemble them. Charziard's exaggerated features (the squintier eyes, the jowel making it look like it has wrinkles) make it seem like an older dragon. Blastoise is less exaggerated & pretty close to the final design, but the mustache -in additino to being a callback to Wartortle- & proportions just read as "elderly" more than the final does

This asset spreadsheet has some interesting information, including a changelog. Do note that the changelog seems to end early, since a few pokémon are not in it.

Highlights:
  • There are planned but unused index numbers for a Bergmite middle evo and a pokémon between Zygarde and Diancie. While these empty slots have been known for a while, we now know that the Pokémon after Zygarde was planned as a Steel/Electric-type, and presumably a fourth mythical.
  • The peanut line made it past the concept stage, but were eventually replaced by Skiddo and Gogoat.

It's really weird how nothing about unused Mega recipients besides Jynx has unearthed. It seems like the most sure thing in regards to XY cut content, but I guess the right folders just haven't been sifted through or those cut concepts never got scanned? Still though, that + the proliferation of alternate Mega Kanto starters make you wonder what the design process for Mega Evolution was like

Bergmite's mid stage we've known about since the SWSH leaks, shame we don't seem to have concept art for it.
I wonder if they might return to that scrapped Steel/Electric for Z-A in some regard

I'm honestly a little surprise the peanuts made it a little further. The evo in particular seems a bit too on the nose close to Breloom.

I hope we get someone to do a non-machine translated pass because I am baffled to why the code name for the Skrelp line is "Poison Drawer"

Considering how much of the Megas seems to be basically advertising focused, I imagine that they got a group of popular Pokemon and then did Mega designs for them, rather than making a bunch of Mega designs and then going "alright what makes sense"

ORAS I could see having more cut designs because that game gets more creative with its picks

Yeah, it is easy to forget that some ideas never make it past the drawing board or the meeting room, and only exist now in archives or in-house hard drives.

Iirc, this leak was obtained through a Nintendo portal, and presumably the project repos shared with Nintendo contacts. Not all concepts get added to the repo, only those deemed to have relevance to the projects.

Next plans are obvious: phish Creatures Inc next

I'm pretty sure at this point it was only Jynx. There might be some more for ORAS but XY only had Jynx cut.

It is a shame it is only machine translated, makes a few things more unclear. I think the kana for the Skrelp line is 'Dokudra', short for Poison Dragon, but I do not know for sure. Similarly, the binacle line is kame-no-te (japanese goose barnacle) if I'm not mistaken, hence why it is listed as 'camera' or 'camera note' with the machine translation.

Much like the Bergmite mid evo or 4th legendary, there are a couple of unused index numbers in Gen VII/VIII as well.

Hopefully there is similar documentation for those.

Wouldn't surprise me if 987 didn't have anything designed for it, and was just a placeholder on the assumption that a pandemic wouldn't hit and they would make another mythic for the next movie.

what if the "4th legendary" was when zygarde was based more like rayquaza

or was a form like that, taking a slot before ultimately turning to a form, then ultimately becomes zygarde complete

steel hits xerneas and electric hits yveltal super effectively is why i am considering that
Considering the typing of this mystery legendary, I think the more likely explanation is this is what was gonna be behind the locked Power Plant door
