Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
The purpose of this thread is to help new players and experienced players alike in choosing optimal EV spreads and natures for their Pokémon. It also serves as a dump for players to share particular EV spreads that they've found success with.
You may suggest EV Spreads and Natures for Pokemon of all ranks on the viability rankings. These suggestions must have brief descriptions that explain the purpose of the spread and what it is to accomplish. If you are suggesting an EV spread that is not 252/252/4, you must provide valid reasons such as damage calcs as to why this spread is effective.
Please, do not suggest gimmicky or unviable spreads in an attempt to create more sets for a Pokemon. In addition to this, including additional spreads whose purpose is to speed creep new EV spreads is disallowed. We don't want another Heatran vs Mega Scizor situation.
Remember to back up your argument with damage calcs (if applicable) and the speed of the Pokemon you are attempting to outspeed.
You may refer here to the speed-tiers.

Let me start with the Drill EVs because its by far the #1 usage and most complicated to EV
Max Speed
Excadrill @ Leftovers
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 32 HP / 60 Atk / 56 Def / 108 SpD / 252 Spe OR 32 Atk / 136 SpD OR 20 Atk / 148 SpD OR 0 Atk / 168 SpD
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance / Toxic / Stealth Rocks / Substitute
- Rapid Spin
- Iron Head / Rock Slide / Rock Tomb
- Earthquake
This is the base Drill EV spread. Max speed is just too good of a speed tier, sniping Modest Manaphy's and Adamant Medichams is huge.
32 HP is an odd number and a leftovers number
32 HP / 56 Def = Lives Weavile Knock from full
The Atk and SpD are basically a combination of what you want to hit. If you want to be good into stall, 60 Atk and SD is probably the way to go. It has the highest chance of 2HKO-ing Gliscor with +2 Iron Head for example, or dealing the most into Cofa. 108 SpD guarantees living non-LO 252 SpA Thundurus Focus blast, and Rotom-W pump after rocks.
If you want to live Thundurus Focus Blast after rocks and have a high chance of OHKO-ing bulky MGarde, 32 Atk and 136 SpD is the way to go.
If you want to 2HKO bulky Volcanion, 20 Atk and 148 SpD is the way to go
If you want the highest chance of living 2 Heat Waves from Torn, then you want 168 SpD

As mentioned above, 40 HP / 252+ Def is the least you want for MScizor. Personally I prefer to go speed to just outspeed Jolly Ttar. The rest are in SpD to live Hydro Pump from Rotom-W from full while maximizing the chances to live after rocks.

Xray's MGarde, which is by far the most common MGarde nowadays in tours, is a very strong threat. This is EV'd to OHKO and always live. This is used when the team especially struggles with Clefable, MGarde, MDiancie and so on. This is pretty much the only Drill spread the lives Mega Diancie's Moonblast + Earth Power (can't really live 2). The extra EVs are really needed so Drill just outspeeds Ada bisharp / Modest Volcanion. The HP / Def combination continues to live Weavile Knock.
44 Atk Excadrill Iron Head vs. 112 HP / 56 Def Gardevoir-Mega: 306-360 (100.3 - 118%) -- guaranteed OHKO

0 SpA Zapdos Heat Wave vs. 56 HP / 252+ SpD Excadrill: 156-184 (41.6 - 49%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
You want maximum offense. Personally I think Jolly Sand Rush Drill is kind of an overkill w/ speed. 40 SpD minimizes the chances of Clef's flamethrower 2HKOing while having a jump point in attack. Going max attack is also totally viable but on sand balance I usually need the drill to come in on clef 1-2 times.
0 SpA Clefable Flamethrower vs. 0 HP / 40 SpD Excadrill: 168-198 (46.5 - 54.8%) -- 10.9% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
I'm going to continue posting optimized EV spreads for common pokemon. It might seem like a small difference, but the optimization is definitely there.
I posted somewhere else, this should be the base Rotom-W spread. 8 Speed outspeeds Ada Crawdaunt, 52 SpA provides a very good chance of breaking Suicune's +1 Sub w/ Volt Switch, and 200 in Def is a jump point.
Based on this, you can substract from the Defense and put in Speed. 128 Spe to outspeed Bisharp puts 80 evs in Def, still a jump point.
A simple optimization but it makes Zapdos a better pivot into Serperior which is quite useful w/ Pressure. I'm also posting this because I see some people running the 68 SpA sample spread which is very outdated.
Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 248 HP / 24 Def / 16 SpA / 180 SpD / 40 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Stealth Rock / Protect
- Taunt
- Earth Power / Toxic
- Lava Plume
This is a Heatran I really enjoy I posted somehwere else. Modest lava plume is very good at making progress thanks to decent damage and burns. 24 Def means you live 2 EQs from burnt gastrodon. Heatran has quite a bit of SpD and doesn't really need Calm, in practice it will take more chip from Volt Switches and so on, but it doesn't come to mattering too much in the long run. 40 Spe outspeeds Belly Drum Azumarill.
This is my version of the Bulky MGallade. 28 Atk is the exact minimum atk investment needed to 2HKO Clefable w/ +2 Pyshco Cut. The rest is put into HP with 4 Def investment to take hits better. The point is to make MGallade as hard as possible to revenge kill.
Aerodactyl @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Taunt
- Stealth Rock
- Defog / Iron Head / Double-Edge
- Earthquake
So I want to kind of debunk the idea that you want to go 385 Speed on Aerodactyl. You absolutely want max speed to outspeed Scarf Volcanion. This does mean that MLopunny has a small chance of killing with Fake Out + HJK, but I think we are way the past the point of Lopunnies trying that and fear of RH chip. Also IMO pressure is the best one, having 1 PP less on something like Hydro Pump or Steam Eruption can come in handy. Unnerve is pretty much never coming in handy, except maybe shuca Drill or smth.
I want to make a small note that I think Naive MDiancie is, IMO, a bad nature on Mega Diancie. Mega Diancie is often used to pivot on Cofagrigus, or it will often be revenge killed by 2-3 Volt Switches from Thundurus, or sit on a Clef 1v1. On the physical side, it will come into play vs. Talonflame or Weavile, but IMO it is less relevant. It is important to note that Hasty will make you more susceptible to Bisharp as +2 or +4 Sucker is often doing quite a bit on MDiancie.
However, I do think MDiancie's strongest feature is Magic Bounce, and being able to pivot on Rocks Clefable or Tspikes Cofa better makes the matcup significantly easier. ORAS is a very trade-heavy tier, and Diancie is blessed with defenses that make it a very good trade bot. Having Hasty/Naive really compromises its trading ability, which is something I find not optimal.
What I often do is run Timid when the team has fine with MDia doing less to Chansey / Amoonguss / Mega Vensuaur / Mega Scizor. If the opponent doesn't have these, you will be clicking Moonblast or Earth Power 99% of the time and -atk diamond storm is still OHKOing Talonflame and Zard Y. This allows MDiancie's incredible bulk not to be wasted.
This is my go to with Physdef. 176+ Def is about all the defense you need if not over kill. 12 SpA has good rolls. I'm not much on speed creep but this outspeeds 0 speed Mttar (bulky rocks). Rest in SpD.
Moveset: I'd never go without Roar tbh, otherwise you are really gonna struggle vs. Manaphy and Sub Volcanion / Keldeo
12 SpA Volcanion Flamethrower vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Pinsir-Mega: 270-318 (99.6 - 117.3%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO
12 SpA Volcanion Steam Eruption vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Heatran: 206-246 (53.3 - 63.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 0 Atk Gliscor Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 176+ Def Volcanion: 276-326 (76 - 89.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Pure Power Medicham-Mega High Jump Kick vs. 248 HP / 176+ Def Volcanion: 261-307 (71.9 - 84.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

I find it really hard to not go any defense on Volcanion. This way you live Mega Medicham HJK from full and can comfortably check Mscizor while being a very good counter to moth and zard Y.
+1 252+ SpA 30 IVs Life Orb Volcarona Hidden Power Ground vs. 248 HP / 236 SpD Volcanion: 250-294 (68.8 - 80.9%) -- 50% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock (Switching into moth w/ lefties means you are at 81.5% so its guaranteed to live)

The first spread is w/ HP Grass. 220+ SpA is a jump point w/ HP Grass IVs and is enough to 2hko physdef clef or if it has spd after a knock. With Sludge wave i prefer more tankiness. Some of the SpD can also go to Def. 96 SpA with 152 SpD is a set designed to be more tanky than offensive but still retain qutie a bit of power. It lives 2 MZam Psychics after rocks.
220+ SpA 30 IVs Volcanion Steam Eruption vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Clefable: 210-247 (53.2 - 62.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

- Spore
- Stun Spore / Protect / HP Fire
- Clear Smog / Sludge Bomb
- Giga Drain
I want to go over Amoonguss because I see many errors in EVing it. 99% of the time in mons you want an odd hp number to save 1 HP. Now to be clear, this 1 HP is also lost in calcs, but the benefit is that you get 4 extra EVs to invest somehwere else. So the HP gain/loss is actually 0, but you save 4 EVs.
Amoonguss is among a special case of mons where 252 HP is not only a leftovers number (multiple of 16), but also a regenerator number (multiple of 3). So actually 252 HP you save 3 HP and lose only 1. 3 HP = 1 from regenerator, 1 from black sludge, and 1 from the actual EV you put in, makes you lose 1 HP on less on average in calcs. But you only lose 1 HP from rocks. So basically the net benefit is +2 HP. And because amoonguss tends to stay in for more than one turn, it procs multiple leftovers, so every switch / every time amoonguss is on the field it's more so like 3-4 HP that you save vs. going 248 HP.
I really like Bold Amoonguss as it comes in on Mega Diancie and Mega Lopunny much more consistently. 176+ Def is a jumpt point and is about all you need. I'm not gonna do speed creep here so I'm not really gonna suggest or discuss speed EVs, you don't really need them 99% of the time anyways.
The Calm spread (200 Def / 56 SpD) is an alternative spread that still lets Amoonguss check Mega Diancie but can take less from Serperior, Rotom, Zapdos, Torn, Keldeo etc. It also has an 81.2% chance of living MZam's Psychic which can come in handy.
HP Fire EVs: If using HP Fire, I strongly recommend putting 4 EVs in SpA, because the 30 IVs in SpA actually change a good amount of calcs:
0 SpA 30 IVs Amoonguss Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Keldeo: 152-182 (47 - 56.3%) -- 81.3% chance to 2HKO
4 SpA 30 IVs Amoonguss Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Keldeo: 156-186 (48.2 - 57.5%) -- 89.5% chance to 2HKO
252 Atk Lopunny-Mega Return vs. 252 HP / 176+ Def Amoonguss: 169-199 (39.1 - 46%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery
4 Atk Diancie-Mega Diamond Storm vs. 252 HP / 176+ Def Amoonguss: 159-187 (36.8 - 43.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery
4 Atk Diancie-Mega Diamond Storm vs. 252 HP / 200 Def Amoonguss: 169-201 (39.1 - 46.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery
252 Atk Lopunny-Mega Return vs. 252 HP / 200 Def Amoonguss: 180-213 (41.6 - 49.3%) -- 20.7% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Psychic vs. 252 HP / 56+ SpD Amoonguss: 374-444 (86.5 - 102.7%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO
Bisharp @ Assault Vest
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Pursuit
- Sucker Punch
- Knock Off
- Iron Head
For AV Bisharp, I want to stress that me and xray both came to the conclusion that the mon is really not worth it unless you go 252+ Atk. Otherwise you hit like a wet noodle and you don't even do a proper job of pursuit trapping psychics, particularly Slowbro/MLatias/Cress.
Sometimes, simple is optimal. If you want to do the thing where you live +3 Surf from manaphy, just use 144 HP / 112 SpD. You wouldn't be able to get the live after rocks but I don't really think its all that necessary.
+3 252+ SpA Manaphy Surf vs. 144 HP / 112 SpD Assault Vest Bisharp: 259-306 (84.3 - 99.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
There are many ways to EV MScizor, but I think in the current economy where MZam / MDiancie are quite strong, I really like going SpD. 96 Speed is my go to as it outspeeds Crawdaunt which MScizor often pivots onto. It also means MScizor outspeeds slow trans. The speed is very flexible, if you like more Def, can take from speed and go down to 56 Spe (200 speed) or even no speed. An alternative spread with more physdef or more offense also work. MScizor EVs in genreal are very flexible but I think this is a very good base spread.
Moves: I think all 3 are good, but Knock off stands a little bit above the rest for me as it is the only one that hits Cofagrigus and also allows you to beat Zapdos/Volcanion long term if you keep rocks up. Superpower makes MScizor a fantastic check for Bisharp and Drill tho, but I'd use more Def if that is the case.
252 Atk Tough Claws Metagross-Mega Hammer Arm vs. 248 HP / 24 Def Scizor-Mega: 113-133 (32.9 - 38.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 124 SpD Scizor-Mega: 145-171 (42.2 - 49.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
216+ SpA Gardevoir-Mega Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 124 SpD Scizor-Mega: 149-176 (43.4 - 51.3%) -- 6.6% chance to 2HKO
+2 252 Atk Excadrill Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 24 Def Scizor-Mega: 246-291 (71.7 - 84.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
+2 252+ Atk Black Glasses Bisharp Sucker Punch vs. 248 HP / 24 Def Scizor-Mega: 246-289 (71.7 - 84.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
PSA: I know this is common knowledge at this point, but for people like me that are still starting out, do NOT use the sample sets provided in the builder's import option. I got that drilled fairly quickly with this set right here. This set right here, produced by good players, allows it to 1v1 MLop, MZam, Thundy, and Zap, and lets it eat a Torn T's Hurricane from full. Rest doubles its lifespan while making it function as a decent status absorber as well, enabling its ability to 1v1 the aforementioned mons.
252 Atk Fake Out vs. 200 HP / 44 Def 30 IVs 67-81 (19.6 - 23.7%) into High Jump Kick 220-259 (64.5 - 75.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Psychic vs. 200 HP / 0 SpD 30 IVs 193-228 (56.5 - 66.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
68 SpA Heat Wave vs. 200 HP / 0 SpD 30 IVs 184-218 (53.9 - 63.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
232 SpA Hidden Power Ice vs. 200 HP / 0 SpD 30 IVs 174-205 (51 - 60.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Hidden Power Ice vs. 200 HP / 0 SpD 30 IVs 164-194 (48 - 56.8%) -- 89.1% chance to 2HKO
0 SpA Hurricane vs. 200 HP / 0 SpD 30 IVs 270-320 (79.1 - 93.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

The basic offensive Mvenu set for me. 248 HP / 104 Def is enough to live 2 Icicle Crashes from CB Weavile. Speed for BD Azu. SpD to take scalds and rotom-w better.
252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Icicle Crash vs. 248 HP / 104 Def Thick Fat Venusaur-Mega: 152-180 (41.8 - 49.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Like I said before, you need to go physdef on mbro since its not getting mega'd until later, and the later you mega it the better. So you need adequate physdef investment. Sometimes I even go max defense as it can pivot on weavile really well (base slowbro that is).

CrashinBoomBang preaches this always. Especially on torn, you wanna go max speed. The going less speed for more bulk is nice in SM and SS, but in oras speed is king and you really don't want to be underspeeding Ada MLop or other Torns. Hurricaning first can be game-changing if you get confusion.

Very thankful to RufflesPro for sharing sets on Pokémon that are difficult to EV. Hopefully more people share their insights and EV spreads.
By the end of this week I'll have finished uploading all the "standard" sets (Pokémon with 252/252/4 like choice band weavile choice specs latios, etc.) so look out for that!
i have no idea what evs rocks landorus uses so i'm gonna share something i've been running with for some time on "offensive" stealth rock landorus sets
Landorus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers / Rocky Helmet

- Stone Edge / Smack Down
the evs let you live +1 bisharp sucker punch and most importantly thundurus hp ice while outspeeding excadrill while also letting you do big damage to the likes of zapdos and if you run smack down, rotom-w and skarmory
Tyranitar-Mega @ Tyranitarite

EVs: 120 HP / 24 Atk / 84 Def / 32 SpD / 248 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Stone Edge
- Crunch / Ice Punch
- Superpower / Earthquake
Enough defensive investment to live meteor mash from metagross after rocks. 24 Atk is a jump point making it reaches 407 attk hitting like a truck. Speed is for adamant bisharp. Could be slower to put 76 atk adamant nature to always kill bisharp after rocks damage with EQ. Overall, my favorite way to use mega tyranitar on sand focused thingy, using SR Clef sometimes doesnt cut it.
Heracross-Mega @ Heracronite
Ability: Skill Link
EVs: 160 HP / 16 Atk / 92 Def / 20 SpD / 220 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Substitute
- Pin Missile / Swords Dance
- Rock Blast
- Close Combat
220 speed outspeeds adamant bisharp and non invested tank chomp. If the landorus-therian lacks edge and the garchomp lacks fire move it subs freely vs them since dragon tail will never break the sub. 160 hp and 20 spdef let it lives moonblast from the tank life orb clef from full (if it is max spa modest you die tho so, not the most favorable roll). The jump point in attack is enough to essentially 2hko anything that doesnt resist it, what a powerful tank. It even lives non invested flamethrower from things like bold volcanion effectively 1v1ing it. Wild.
Altaria-Mega @ Altarianite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 248 HP / 136 SpA / 20 SpD / 104 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 1 Atk / 30 Def / 30 SpD / 30 Spe
- Hyper Voice
- Fire Blast
- Hidden Power [Rock] / Heal Bell
- Roost
Fuck those fire types. I always found hilarious how special altaria-mega could just fall victim of the same things it wants to check. Dragon Dance is overall the better set and there is so much contention for the mega slot, but the incredibly typing cannot be understated. Outstanding check to a lot of things in electric types and dragons. The EV Spread outspeeds adamant max speed tyranitar so you can kill it before it can kill you. Bisharps dont tend to run life orb so just tank an iron head and dont get flinched. the SpDef EVs are to avoid any chance of fire blast from timid zard-Y to 2hko you. HP Rock makes it a more effective check counter to a lot of things, but if you have sufficient for those then heal bell is always great to have.
Garchomp @ Life Orb
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 60 Atk / 208 SpA / 240 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Draco Meteor
- Stone Edge / Fire Blast
2 only Garchomp sets missing. Chain Chomp offers the unique quality of luring specific counters to mons that have a lot of contact moves but are inherently walled by it. Think of something like Mega Pinsir and some Mega Lopunny sets. Chain Chomp is designed to lure most ground rockers that gives problems to something like mega pinch: rocky helmet garchomp or landorus, and electric types like rotom-wash. The ev spread is designed for draco meteor to have good odds vs rotom-wash after rocks if leftovers and if any other items it just gets 2hkod even at -2. I used this thing for supporting Mega Pinsir so it is a fun one for some niche mons. Sub Salac is just the sub SD Chomp, but with the hp divisible by 4 to trigger the salac berry at 25% health. 12 hp, 28 spdef is to make sure Cofagrigus doesnt break the sub with Hex
