[SET]
Calm Mind (Celebi) @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 40 Def / 92 SpA / 4 SpD / 120 Spe
Modest Nature
- Psychic
- Hidden Power [Fire] / Giga Drain
- Calm Mind
- Protect / Recover / Reflect
* Psychic is a strong STAB move that hits premier Pokemon in the metagame such as Zapdos, Tauros, and Arcanine for substantial, consistent damage because of the lack of Psychic-resistant and -immune Pokemon in the tier.
* Hidden Power Fire is excellent coverage for Celebi as it lets it beat Metagross and opposing Celebi after 2 Calm Minds which lets it quickly snowball out of proportion.
* Recover is used to provide more consistent longevity on teams with alternative ways to position around Tauros and Aerodactyl.
* Reflect can be used to benefit both Celebi and team members, covering late-game cleaners such as Aerodactyl. Giga Drain also has the bonus of providing both recovery and offensive pressure, buying Celebi extra turns as well as stacking excellently with Leftovers.
* Leftovers is the best item for Celebi because it provides extra longevity and Natural Cure removes the need for Lum Berry.
* The Special Attack investment allows Celebi to 2HKO Zapdos with 252 HP EVs at +1 with Psychic and 2HKO Metagross with 252 HP and 64 Special Defense EVs using Hidden Power Fire. The Defense investment lets Celebi tank an Overheat from Modest Arcanine with 32 Special Attack EVs, and prevents it getting 2HKOed by the various non-STAB Ice-type moves in the tier. The Speed investment enables Celebi to outspeed maximum Speed Metagross. The rest of the EVs are dumped into Defense. If Celebi is not running Hidden Power Fire, though, it can move 4 Speed EVs to Defense for slightly better bulk.
* Celebi holds the coveted resistance to both Earthquake and Thunderbolt, so it can switch in, take minimal damage, potentially force out a threat, and set up a Calm Mind. Celebi should be preserved until late-game, as it thrives on weakened opposing Pokemon, and easily setting up multiple Calm Minds and proceeding to sweep.
* Celebi can also threaten the likes of Swampert, Marowak, and Suicune with Giga Drain; Metagross, Regice, Sceptile, and other Celebi with Hidden Power Fire; and Gengar with Psychic.
* Celebi struggles against physical attacks from the likes of Tauros, Aerodactyl, and Metagross, so Intimidate and strong Fire-type attack support from the likes of Arcanine is greatly appreciated. Swampert is also a great partner, as Celebi resists Grass-type attacks for Swampert; in return, it covers common threats to Celebi, such as Aerodactyl, Arcanine, Tauros, and Metagross. Suicune offers similar typing benefits, but instead of the utility of STAB Earthquake, it works with Celebi to overwhelm opponents with its own Calm Mind boosts. Metagross is also quite a good teammate thanks to its matchup against Flying-type and Ice type moves and for removing the likes of Aerodactyl, opposing Celebi, and Regice. Celebi also matches up quite well against the Ground-type moves that Metagross hates.
