Hello Smogoff! Introducing everyone's favorite new game show...

bit or legit island.png

Logo shamelessly based off Deal or No Deal.

In this game show, I will give contestants (all of you) two statements, one of which is a bit (false), and one that is legit (true). It is up to you to determine which is which! Healthy discussion is encouraged in this thread. It would be really easy to look up the answers and just spoil it for everyone so please don't do that (honors system). In order to submit an answer, just bold something in your post that makes it obvious what you're submitting. After enough time has passed, I'll reveal the answer and those that picked the legit answer will be awarded... uh... let's call them Island Points. Because I don't know what makes this an island other than the fact that the word Island fit in my crudely made in MS Paint logo. And besides, it would be funny if someone tried to steal your "IP." Anyway, let's get started. It's time to play...

BIT!

OR!

LEGIT!

Your first category is: WAR

First statement: Australia fought a "Great Emu War" where soldiers with machine guns attempted to kill off emus that were destroying crops. Australia lost the war (i.e. the campaign was unsuccessful, and the emu population remained relatively unchanged).

Second statement: There is an advanced pitching metric in professional baseball called WAR. It stands for "Without Additional Runs," and measures how many runs a pitcher has given up NOT including those scored by fielding errors or runners inherited from a previous pitcher.

Have fun everyone!

I can't wait for this thread to be a massive failure

Second one is the bit because Shohei is not leading the stat, therefore the MLB social media admin has declared it not a real stat.

First is legit, but wasn't really a notable historical event. The term 'Great Emu War' was invented by newspapers at the time to mock the government for what was seen as a waste of national resources. The second is a bit: WAR is a legit stat, but it stands for Wins Above Replacement.

Got beaten out by everyone else, but first is legit, so second must be a bit.

Emus can now be the only species to have the right to state they won a war!

woah! a new game show. i'm going to say the first is a bit and the second one is legit - you've gotta have dissent for there to be entertainment, of course.

edit: the second fact is true - I am a baseball addict

First one is common knowledge because of how much it infested YouTube for years only a little while back. Because content creators are lazy, the Emu War is a pretty widely misunderstood event, so I'd recommend that anyone interested look into it themself (just skim the Wikipedia page at least) before uncritically repeating the story to other people.

In baseball, WAR is wins above replacement. It measures (estimates) how many additional wins a player, not just a pitcher, earned their team compared to if they were replaced by a replacement player (basically a mediocre player that would cost the team very little to employ).

I've already read both Wikipedia pages before seeing this question, so pretty free one. Neat idea.

edit: I'm going to guess you, phoopes, first heard of WAR from a Jon Bois video.

Alright think we're going to close up submissions on the first question. As pretty much everyone chose...

The Great Emu War is legit! WAR indeed is an advanced metric in baseball, but it does stand for Wins Above Replacement rather than Without Additional Runs.

Commentary: perhaps this was a bit too easy... didn't realize that we had so many Great Emu War fans in the chat lol. Or just Australians. I tried to come up with a pretty believable lie for the baseball stat, but seems like Great Emu War was too famous of a silly thing/perhaps something that you could just look up (not that any of you would, I have faith <3). Also Volk I AM a very big Jon Bois fan, but I've been aware of WAR independent of his content. Dead by Daylight I am actually a Philadelphia Phillies phan. Phitting for phoopes.

Standings:

1 Island Point:
chimp
skippergamez
bro torterra
Tbolt
Mathy
MAMP
Rugi
Jungle cruiser
Uber45
shadowpea
Lightniong
Let's go shuckles
Volk

0 Island Points:
Dead by Daylight

Good job, (almost) everyone! Not a lot of dissent on this one, but maybe this next one will trip some more folks up. Now it's time to play...

BIT!

OR!

LEGIT!

Your category this time around is: ROCKET

First statement: The Houston Rockets are the NBA team that most recently won a title without a player making 2nd Team All-NBA or higher. For their title team in the 1994-95 season, Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler both made 3rd Team, but every champion since then has had at least one player make 1st Team or 2nd Team.

Second statement: Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime was a game released for the Nintendo DS in Japan in 2005, and the US in 2006. Is is the second in a trilogy of games, with the first and third games being Japan exclusives. In the plot of Rocket Slime, there are 100 total residents of the town of Boingburg, each of which need to be saved in order to 100% the game.

---

Today's question is brought to you by recent events: the Houston Rockets just traded for Kevin Durant yesterday, and not that long ago I decided to do a replay of Rocket Slime for the first time in years. Hopefully it's a bit more of a challenge than the last one.

Happy debating!

Well, in that case, you should join the Smogon Fantasy Baseball league.

I'm going to say the Rockets one is legit, but I'm not an NBA watcher so don't burn me at the stake if I am wrong.

this one i actuallly do not know my life seems to have more australians than basketball or dq but im betting dbd is wrong again and so the second statement is legit
