Dust off those history books, folks, we're going back in time.

I have a habit of randomly remembering things that have happened on Smogon that were pretty inconsequential, but still make me chuckle. Sometimes they're very difficult to find though, so I'd like to compile some old shit into a thread that makes it easier for me (and you) to come back to. General rule for this thread is that I'd like everything we're doing "archaeology" for to be at least ten years old, though that's not a hard and fast rule. I feel like 10+ years on these forums is enough to make something vintage, or at least a classic. Also nothing that's already been preserved in Gallery/Greatest Hits because those are obvious.

Here are the first round of highlights:

1. bugmaniacbob's lengthy Necturna analysis (2009)

Yes, you read that spoiler tag correctly. 17,000+ words for this analysis. To put that in perspective, that is more than beloved children's book Frindle, which has a word count in the 16,000s. (I bring that up because I remember an old Tumblr post or tweet referencing the length of something in comparison to Findle, and I can't find that, so any help with Frindle archaeology would be appreciated too). I looked and the character count for this analysis is over 100,000 characters, which is actually more than the current limit of 65,000 characters on Xenforo. Apparently, posts used to be able to be longer, and it didn't break on the switch from vBulletin to Xenforo all those years ago. Who would've thought? Anyway, while this analysis is not as famous as his Claydol analysis (preserved in Smogon Gallery), bugmaniacbob really showed that you can literally write novel-length analyses, and for that, we should thank(?) him.

2. bojangles' creative callout (2012)

This is a personal favorite of mine from back in the day. In the social forums ages of old, "callout" posts were pretty common. If a joke fell flat, or someone was being annoying, it was more acceptable to make a post letting them know to go lurk more (there was even a time where I made a post that I can't find right now where it was literally just two images: a Golurk and a s'more). Anyway, bojangles, who I'm pretty sure was an admin at the time of this post, stuck his nose into the social forums and found a thread that he didn't like. In fact, a thread that he thought was incredibly stupid. So he let the OP know. Thankfully, unlike the OP, whose gif links are now broken, the glorious image format that bojangles used still works, so we can appreciate this classic callout.

3. Tokyo Tom destroys kokoloko (2015) (Inside Scoop only, sorry unbadged users)

Speaking of callouts, this is probably one of the most legendary ones ever written. In this thread, now-permabanned user Stratos was complaining about his demotion. It's honestly a long thread with a lot of posts but there are some ones worth reading in there... specifically this callout. kokoloko was just trying to tell people to cut Senior Staff some slack basically, that they're not the villains that they're made out to be. And he did it in a... colorful manner. Tokyo Tom comes in to save the day and make one of the funniest callouts I have ever seen in any medium, whether that be online or in real life. BRICK SQUAD forever.

Honorable mention to the Lavos quitpost, but that's only like five years old so it's not quite vintage yet. Though I did want to mention that it's the first post on Page 5 of that thread lol

Now that our first little history lesson is out of the way, I'd like to put out a call to action: I need help finding something on these forums. Does anyone have the link (or at least a screenshot) to the original "Overall B+" meme from way back in the day. IIRC, this was a post in Smeargle's Studio where a user famously gave an artist's work a rating of B+, which is a now (mostly) forgotten meme on this site. Thanks for your help.

---

Post your own favorite pieces of forum history here too!

I am so sad I can't find the original Overall: B+ post.

Zracknel's made art about it https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/zracknels-logo-thread.85344/page-2#post-3745086 (the classic Metapod).

I am pretty sure the original post was made in Chou Toshio's art thread, and the name indicates the same (https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/overall-boobs.75472/page-10). The linked page should be where the post is because the post was presumably by user PerfectMetapod. Unfortunately, I can't search his post history to see if that post exists elsewhere.

I came to the similar conclusion of above that the critique itself was contained in the lost photobucket embed of this post.

thats completely fine. Being a casual artist doesnt negate the intense feeling of having accomplished something though. It may be debunked a level lower than becoming professional, but it is still a great satisfaction all artists should have in their life

EDIT: Durrrr forgot the critique i made. Went all out on it since i like you

Brimming with words, bugmaniacbob’s posts transcend time and space… spooky…

For real though Bughouse is probably right, I forget how merging posts works now that I’m not a smod, but I thiiiiink new posts get merged into old ones? Probably what happened, because there’s no “last edited” date on the post. Though it could’ve been edited silently too, that’s a possibility. But I doubt edit history goes back that far now that I think about it so most likely case is a post merge

I can't find any relevant posts or threads or whatever but also good smogon archaeology is the time Birkal permanently deleted Bull of Heaven's account by mistake, which is why you'll see weird posts that look like this from their original permanently deleted account:

With all the other stuff I mentioned I can’t believe I forgot to mention that incident too lol, good call

To be fair when you’re using the admin functions there’s a lot of trash cans icons that delete, for example, moderator powers from a user and other stuff like that. Thankfully I never (knowingly) came close to deleting someone, and I think these days the only things that are possible are “soft deletes” rather than “hard deletes,” where something is truly gone forever. At least that’s how it is with posts. Unsure about users because I never deleted anyone’s account

Hard to believe that this was over 10 years ago but the Bloo / Style incident was one of the craziest things that ever went down on this site in my opinion. For the uninitiated, smogon admin / top tier player Bloo made an alt named Style who claimed to only start playing a few months before and I’m pretty sure rigged the bracket to get matched up with his friends (I don’t remember if that was real or not) but used his close relationships with these other players to “build teams” with them that he counter teamed to hell and back. He then went on an absolute tear through the tournament until ultimately getting DQed in the finals of the tournament. For the badgeholders there’s a few IS threads with a lot more detail and for everyone BKC made a dramatic video about the whole incident

I've been trying to be conversative with my posting lately since I'm about to hit the illustrious 1k, but eh, i wanna post here

Some that live rent-free in my head to this day:

1. DestinyUnknown post-OST9 meltdown

This needs some context. Firstly, OST9 was, as far as I know, the first individual Smogon tour to have prizing Most relevant for this situation: The winner would receive a fresh off the shop 3DS, and the 2nd place finisher would receive a brand new copy of Black 2 or White 2 (incidentally, I think these two prizes have about the same value nowadays lol). Secondly, despite this being after Smogon had largely moved to Pokemon Showdown, Dunk and Hugo elected to play their finals on Pokemon Online instead. Dunk loses Game 1 and then, for some godforsaken reason (allegedly it was due to a PO bug?), he loads up a UU team for Game 2 and Hugo forces him to play it out. Hugo takes the easy W, the entire Smogon community melts down over who was in the right or wrong or whatever, but the now permabanned Dunk caps it off with easily one of the greatest lines I've ever read on this website and still sits with me even long after reading it in sophomore year of high school:
enjoy your 3ds you fucking piece of shit

2. A really bad a forum thread that someone (presumably vader) hijacked (this one isn't really that funny tbh i just remember it fsr)

3. The LonelyNess rant

This post walked so the Lavos meltdown could run. I guess for a little bit of context, the Smog Frogs were a very short-lived SPL team that replaced the Cryonicles during BW2, and it was infamous for being absolutely awful, to the point where "SEND THIS MAN TO THE FROGS" quickly became a fun haha meme everyone would post. Anyways, someone decided enough was enough and decided to hop on an alt and write the ad-hominem attack to end them all.

---------------------------------------

There is one other post that I REAAAAALLY love, but I can't share it because we're actually considering adapting it for a Smogon YT video at some point down the line, so I'd rather keep it close to my chest to avoid it getting sniped by other youtubers lol. Guess I'll post it here if/when we ever do it.

Also there's no associated post, but do any other oldheads remember the /birkal command? Good times.
