is an official Team Rater
post your funny tournament stories that have very little to do with the games and everything to do with the context surrounding them (inspired by a chat in compgen ty about15gals Ineros)

mine is:
i played DPP ubers cup quarterfinals against elodin on hotspot on my laptop in my car because i just broke up with my girlfriend and had to go deliver her stuff to her after school, so i couldn't go home— but i had already scheduled the game and just wanted to get it over with. that resulted in this insane game 2 which might be the funniest game i've ever played. (i won the set 2-0 btw)

Played a tournament set in a hotel room one night. I was in a middle of a 100+ turn game 3 balance fest where I was about to win due to some hax that was in my favor against AstilCodex. My phone then suddenly died, causing me to DC. I couldn’t find my phone charger anywhere in the room because I settled into the room not long before the set. So I had to rush to my computer, wait for it to boot up, connect and sign into the hotel WiFi, and get back into the battle in order to finish it out. I think I got back into the battle with less than 30 seconds left.

Here are some ones that I can recall after looking back:

• In this one Rby lc spotlight tour I was paired with someone who only was scheduling in Portuguese I think? Either way it was funny because I needed to pull up a translator for every scheduling message he sent (he sent a lot…)
• I played for this random unofficial team tour called the euphonos legacy league and despite playing like shit for most of the tour I did end up winning one week where in the 3rd game my internet kept cutting out and I was low on timer so I was scared I would dc in the middle of a teamtour game lol…
• In capcl I scheduled for playing at night on a Friday I believe and I accidentally took a nap and slept through the time LMAOOO, I had my managers fucking dm me and when I woke up that same night I played the game (very badly..). This also happened in some nd same six trios tour. If I had a nickel for every time I slept through a tour game with people that needed me to win then I’d have 2 which is weird that it happened twice.
• In mfpl I played wincon in oras monotype and I was asking for games in mono room because I didn’t feel like pinging my team on a fucking Tuesday to play test games so what he does is that he goes on an alt and plays a game with me when I was using the team I was going to use so I had to switch it up. I got cooked in the actual game and although he made fun of it in the least kind way possible in his winpost it’s funny looking back on it. Never asking ps chatrooms for games again.
• In Solomod pl in week 1 I had a horrible fever or whatever it was. I wasn’t really in any teamtours atm so I wasn’t too worried and I wasn’t starting, however one of the players for mg4 didn’t show up and I was the one called on to sub… when I was sick. I ended up playing because I’m addicted and I wanted a win on the sheet but I played pyukumuku stall with a team that wasn’t very good and lost lol.

And that’s all that I can remember rn. Hopefully this made you guys laugh a bit

This was me and iirc was also super sick at this time and fell asleep and forgot about the match

Background: RBY has a low tier circuit, where top 8 from the low tier tournaments throughout the year qualify for the year end championship. This match was Game 1 of a Bo5 for the chance to make top 4. I was playing this match in front of my girlfriend at the time, who knew I played Pokemon but never saw me play competitively before.

I did NOT deserve to win this game. First half of the match I made some pretty bad blunders if you review the tape. I was feeling nervous because she was watching I guess. But Turn 32, I called Yazu’s Dugtrio switch by Exploding with Electrode and I popped the fuck off. Obviously, the game is not over, and it was far from won, but I was hella excited about it. If you keep watching, I was still in a losing position. I deserved to lose. But then, Yazu misses a Hyper Beam. There’s a chance if he misses another Hyper Beam. He does. I win the game and pop the fuck off even harder than I did before.

I ended up winning this Bo5 in six(!) games because we actually tied the one game. So it was super memorable to me for that reason anyway. But because my girlfriend was watching it was especially memorable because she got to see me win something relatively high stakes (for me). As a reward, we went out and she bought us ice cream after. It was sick, even if she ruthlessly made fun of me after for getting so excited about Pokemon lol

I have multiple instances of playing in random environments

Here’s a list of places where I’ve played a tournament game in:
During a School lockdown
Disney’s Hollywood studios
Epcot
Magic kingdom
Six flags great adventure
Mcdonalds
in class (multiple times)
hotel room (multiple times)
on the clock at an internship
among many others that I’m not remembering rn

just to be fair I lost most of them

When I first went to university, the video game club had a gym challenge set up for orientation week: find club members at specific points around campus and battle them to receive a button. I had little experience with competitive mons at this point, and so went for what was listed as the easiest leader first. Fairly obviously, I had a lot going on in my first week at university that wasn't optimizing my teams, so it was mostly done by whatever mons I happened to have lying around. Thing is, this was during gen 6 and I had been nostalgia tripping for ORAS on account of my first mainline game having been Emerald. The main team I had was a tribute to my progress as a trainer, six mons that I associated with milestones or strong memories. So that's what I ran with to one of my first notable social interactions at a new chapter of my life.

It was six Steel types (Skarmory, Aggron(Mega), Heatran, Ferrothorn, Excadrill, Aegislash). And the leader was Fairy type.

(In the end I didn't get time to fight all 8. I went 2-3, with my other win being against Dark. Lost to Water, Ground, and (VGC-sytle doubles) Normal).

2022 SPL XIII Week 8: emma vs. Mako

I scheduled my first SPL set for Saturday afternoon and purposely made zero plans the entire weekend, knowing if I lost I would be too depressed to do anything. Despite my hands quite literally shaking, I won 2-0 and screamed so loudly that my housemate had to ask what was going on.

2022 Vancouver Regionals Round 4

I was 2-1 going into Round 4 before my friends and I misinterpreted when the lunch break was and got a round loss, and I subsequently lost my remaining rounds to finish 2-5.

2022 SCL II Finals: Ren-chon vs. tazz

I missed my Power Plant Dynamos win SCL II for my second trophy because I was, uh, having sex.

2023 SPL XIV Week 1: Nails vs. Heroic Troller

I was in Puerto Rico conducting Social Science Research for a majority of SPL XIV, and I delayed traveling to Old San Juan with my friends to watch Nails, despite getting his Snorlax frozen in Game 3, upset Heroic Troller, for the happiest I've ever been after a team SPL/SCL win.

2023 Hartford Regionals

My friends' Airbnb turned out to be fake (?) so they last-minute stayed over at my college housing. Despite playing zero (0) games of the format before the tournament, I went 7-2 in Day 1 and advanced to Day 2. After winning my first Day 2 game, I subsequently lost my remaining four to the 2016 World Champion Wolfe Glick, two Top 5 players in North America, and an auto-loss FullRoom matchup.

2023 RoAPL Week 7: emma vs. Don Eduardo

I was up 1-0 against 6-0 Don Eduardo before my fire alarm went off in the middle of Game 2, had to swap from my PC to my Laptop, and subsequently lost Games 2 and 3.

2024 SPL XV Week 3: Nails vs. chuva de perereca

Nails was initially unresponsive and I prepared to substitute in while in the lab performing a chemical reaction for my Undergraduate Senior Thesis project.

2024 RBYWC II Finals: Excal vs. UltiNooba, Isza vs. M Dragon, SaDiSTiCNarwhal vs. Don Eduardo

Down 1-2 going into Sunday, we ripped off three consecutive wins back-to-back-to-back (winposts at 5:27 PM, 6:11 PM, and 7:11 PM) to secure the championship while I watched on my laptop at a New Jersey Turnpike service area, as I was driving back from college after graduating with my B.S. in Chemical Engineering.

2024 RoAPL X Semifinals: emma vs. RaiZen1704

I played and won this Semifinals set on my phone, in the car, as I was last-minute en route to a Live Racing Haskell.

2025 RBYWC III Quarterfinals: Isza vs. King Billu

Down 2-3 and needing a win to force tiebreaker, my friends and I watched the game while ****** outside on 4/20 in-between movies.

not pokemon but i pulled up melty blood on my laptop during a school thing a few weeks ago and i watched some white kid i'd never met in my life (who had never played a fighting game before in his life) go 2-1 against a tekken player and 2-0 against ME (the best mb player in the school by proxy of no one else has heard of this game before)

For me it was when I played a RBY UU match against a friend of mine who goes to the same college as me and lived in the same dorm building as me at like 2 AM and we both had classes at 8:30.
Honorable mention to when I played an OMFL match at a hotel in Copenhagen one day before I was scheduled to return back home from a study abroad trip
