Popcorn Mafia 4 - Cycle 3 Deadline August 23 at 10PM EDT

Are we gonna tinfoil skipper and DBD’s minds going to exactly the same place (Smogon Awards) and them posting it in thread a minute apart from each other as them talking about this in scumchat btw

Nope that’s a very natural conclusion to make while simultaneously being not something anyone would discuss in scumchat

Round posted right as I was going to bed last night but here I am!

Keep in mind that I’m an NOC newbie, but I do feel like it makes sense to give the gun to someone seen as a good town player on the first day. There’s the least amount of information out there to make reads on, and just based off numbers and little information it’s more likely that HyHy makes a bad shot and gets eliminated.

Tbh I think because of the lack of information it’d make more sense to stay quiet/undercover if you’re mafia on day one for the above reasons so I think we should keep an eye out for the less talkative people (I know IRL is a thing but still…)

Who would you have picked? I know this is a hypothetical in which you are mafia with 5 other people, but what exactly is wrong with HyHy being picked?

Except less so in this game because there was actually a meaningful N0 result (HyHy was chosen).

My main encounters with Realiti's scumgame were when we were maf together in the previous NOC and also Celever's game where Realiti kinda got lol-bussed on D1 by Emerald. I dont think Realiti acted "above investigation" in EGO mafia but _shrug_. Im kind of curious where you are going with this.

Mostly real. I think you and Des are probably town.
legit i'd probably have picked des because i feel like that immediately makes the thread impossible to glean any useful information out of given how some folks would react to it. alternatively, giving it to folks who tend to try and heroshoot or have the perceived personality to try for it (realiti, pulsar, texas, tommy) seems useful on a d1, or if i was particularly win-hungry, giving it to a newer player like phoopes or shypebble who are likely to struggle with the pressure and therefore aim poorly. i spent most of the decision period trying to wonder what mafia's plan would be. my gut instinct was to give the gun to des, but i think any of those other people would've made good options too. hh would not have been on my shortlist, though i do see the logic.

also re: realiti, nah i mean every game i play with him where he's maf i feel like he tries to play off his early d1 posts as clearing and is deaf to any pushback to that nonsense
I feel framed already, “Hydro is one of the best endgame town players” is something I say frequently :blobglare:
celever as usual thinking im totally addicted to thinking about him eyeroll! /j

Because I kinda want to

The reason Tommy said that is he just got the Top Community Contributor badge everyone say congrats Tommy!
dbd's post wasn't about smogon awards afaict? wasnt it just a post about top cc

this is an attack on my character and I will not stand for it :puff:

for real though, my thought from earlier stands about watching out for people that don't pop their heads in much to the thread on day one. My thought is wait until near the end of the day and then shoot an inactive because that may be a maf trying to lay low (but of course y'all know the meta better than I do haha)

I don't like this idea, inactives are honestly more likely to be town than not and losing a good player in HyHy D1 to a miss would be devastating

phoopes I'm sorry to say that this will be a difficult first game for you, the structure of popcorn leads itself to very different mafia motivations than traditional NOC, somewhat hazy memories from the last time I played this, but given the nature of the kill structure and the lack of night kill analysis motivations, mafia play tends to encourage significantly more isolationist game play than the usual expected coordination. It's fundamentally a structure about individual game reads - this is particularly more difficult from the town side of things in that it also discourages active discussion and consensus building, I don't need to convince you my reads are good if I'm willing to have you shoot me so I can shoot my reads. This approach tends to be the default for anyone coming into the structure because the incentive structure supports the hero shot, but it's of course inherently anti-town to push for a self shot when it limits shots on mafia reads or POE - on that note POEs are very difficult to make coherent given all the above, it's much easier for a mafia member to play a pure town game without consequence and thus slip into the town "core" in the end game.

All town should be first and foremost focused on making their reads on an individual level, assess the motivations, who is making the post and why? What do they gain from it? What are the mindsets in which they are more or less likely to approach? What does the projected emotional state imply about the worlds in which they make that post?

If I have the gun right now I shoot celever because their entry to the thread represents an overly self-aware perception of how others are viewing them in the thread, presenting a general anxiety of coming under suspicion at a point where they are not yet comfortable with their thread presence, in a position where a town oriented mindset would not be concerned unless they were specifically thinking that a fairy was targeting them as a misfire...on page 1.
