SPOILERS! Legends ZA Data Dumps - Adding Info to OP

Dang, I haven't even had time to finish the five stages of grief over no mega marshadow and suddenly gen10 tera build leaks are coming out.

Anyways, focusing on the dlc megas that we can talk about here:

-While I expected some mons with megas to potentially get second megas, I figured it would be mons like venusaur and blastoise (not so much because of pattern completion but because until the datamine there was no sign of them showing up in base game). Absol, Garchomp, and Lucario are... fine, I guess. At very least Absol deserves to a second shot. Garchomp deserves a better looking mega but I think it would be funny if its stats are similar to regular mega chomp, just a different type or something. Lucario also hopefully changes type.

-Not disappointed that no other starters got megas. They can get something special in a future legends game.

-Mega chimecho is so funny, I hope it looks awesome.

-Disappointing that we're getting a bunch of gen 9 megas but no more gen 8 megas. Maybe it's partly to make up for no special tera forms other than ogerpon and terapagos.

-Alola gets more love than Galar, but 2/5 are Magearna (or 2/4 if Zeraora gets added to base game before the dlc comes out). Golisopod is a nice pick, Crabominable... not what I would've gone with, even if I was trying to give some love to kooky mons.

-I am surprised there is no mega hoopa, xerneas, or yveltal. Ok, Hoopa has Unbound form, but Zygarde gets a mega so it's not that crazy that Hoopa could also get one. Could also have been interesting to give bound hoopa a mega, instead of unbound. For Xerneas and Yveltal, I guess even GameFreak couldn't bring themselves to unleash mega Xerneas on the vgc community.

-Not new megas, but the scrubbed dex entrees add the missing latis and weather trio. I haven't seen anything about whether the primal forms might make it in (e.g., scrubbed slots in the item list corresponding to the orbs), so I'm curious if there's anything to glean about that from the datamine.

Overall, fine enough list, but other than Darkrai and Zeraora (which may be base game anyways) nothing jumps out at me as a definite want for an in-game team. Will have to see the types and designs for sure.

The primal forms are scrubbed like the rest of the prospects fwiw.

Anyone else thing Mega Pyroar's mane looks like a cartoon squid?

>Meganium: This Pokémon can fire a tremendously powerful Solar Beam from its four flowers. Another name for this is Mega Sol Cannon.

>Emboar: Brandishing a blazing flame shaped like a serpentine spear, it rushes in to rescue its imperiled allies.

>Feraligatr: With its arms and hoodlike fin, this Pokémon forms a gigantic set of jaws with a bite 10 times as powerful as Mega Feraligatr’s actual jaws.

Ngl, I kinda wonder what the underlying theme behind this choice of starters and their Megas is given this. Emboar stays Fire/Fighting but Meganium becomes part Fairy and Feraligatr becomes part Dragon. Which is pretty cool, having more Dragon and Fairy starters, even if they're Megas, but starter trios since Sinnoh have generally had a bit of an underlying design theme. Even the Hisuian starters in Arceus had a bit of it too with a ronin archer, a ruthless samurai, and a monk-like Typhlosion.

I kinda wonder what they're going for with Mega Meganium, Mega Emboar, and Mega Feraligatr here that suits Z-A.

I"m sorry but Smogon is not the entire fanbase lmao.

That isn't really what I said though. It's just an observation that Garchomp's lay popularity was such that within the community there were concerted efforts to keep it from dropping. The only other mon I can recall that being a thing with at scale was Tyranitar, which I'd contend is definitely more popular than Nite as well. And yeah, a lot of that is because of how good they were in both the games and competitive from their inception.

The popularity conversation is ultimately silly as someone else pointed out, but I have been around mons for over 25 years at this point and it's really a very small group of mons that aren't box legends, early gen starters, or anime/merch darlings (Luke, Gren) that I can remember ever being more popular than Chomp was/is, especially because of how pivotal DP was in the series. It and Luke getting second megas is honestly kind of a no-brainer in that regard.

The mega-Meganium dex entry sounds more like a hint towards a potential paradox Pokémon.

How so?

Incidentally, Garchomp will perennially linger in the consciousness of even casual fans for being the centerpiece of the most iconic final boss in the whole franchise which got not one, but two even more challenging reboots for Switch zoomers & gen alphas
The only Pokémon/Trainer combination from the games that are in the same realm of popularity as Cynthia & Garchomp is Red & Pikachu and Whitney & Miltank

Now that Im actually home and can comment on these:

Meganium: saw it a bit earlier, Very cute, very chonky. I like that its solarbeams are so strong it gets its on special in universe name for it like its a secret anime technique.

Cleafable: This one is the one I was kind of worried about the most when I heard the dex descriptions. And...its growing on me a bit. The wings are beautiful its got bright sparkly eyes, and the ears are like Snubbull's. The squiggly of hair becoming a hat tho is....hm. Flesh hat. it feels like it should be plush but imagining it feels like it'd be like touching a cyst or something. Maybe the intent was meant to be one of those Fairy Cakes like Slurpuff is based on. Ill need to see it in motion.

EDIT:
And now we have it in motion! Maybe the head is meant to be part beret part desert, like a cupcake or a macaroon.

Pyroar: The original pyroar had the Kanji for Fire (火) as its mane on the male, which we see when anyone uses Fire Blast. Not only does it combine the male and female manes in the design but it also becomes the kanji for Blaze or Flame(炎). I honestly felt Pyroar was done dirty for a while, hoping that it gets proper movepoll additions with Champions. Earth Power is a good start at least!

I’ve seen most of the notable trainers in the royale, save for one i was surprised at the lack of, so i suppose i should ask…

can you actually battle jett? i saw a story leak a while back saying she’d wield mega clefable… but jacinthe has that. so i figured maybe she’d have something else. but now my conclusion simply points to her not fighting you at all.

A lot of the mega designs in this game seem very animation based. They seem to have picked designs which would have provided fun ways to animate their motions, such as feraligatrs fake head, the floatiness of clefable and delphox, the bounciness of victreebel, or the everything about starmie.

If you look at the original megas, a lot of them have very clunky designs that work with figures more than motion, which was fine because they were made for a game where pokémon stand still for the most part and have very simple motions of attack. However once they Are in more involved motion other than doing an attack animation, they look really stupid.
The anime could get past this because it can just ignore weight and gravity and whatever, but in games where they're moving around a lot of them feel like old gojira costumes wobbling around lmfao

Could you name some mega examples? I think I have a few that are already in my mind, but then games like Pokken made some of them shine regardless.

They said as much before release. You can also only ever have one copy of a given stone

That is kind of odd. I am reading they can be held by a Pokemon in game, but work more like key items (1 per game, cannot be removed from inventory).

Do we know what Effect Sequence is for moves? What determines the cool down/recharge time for a move? Looking at Mach Punch it still has a +1 priority but a very high Effect Sequence.

Move #183: Mach Punch (ID 183)

Type: Fighting

Yeah that's been a thing since at least Sun and Moon imo. Some designs have been a lot more based on how they'd look in motion. Stuff like Incineroar come immediately to mind since a lot of its personality is conveyed in its movement.

1. Do Xerneas, Yveltal and Mewtwo have proper boss fights or are they just the same old boring Ultra Ball lottery?
2. Is Lysandre Labs a dungeon or has it been reduced to one room for a legendary encounter like Turnback Cave in Arceus?

I did a chart instead of just naming it all
Green are megas that i think are animated well and have good motion. if you notice a lot of them are the fighting types/anime favorites lmfao

Yellow are megas that have clunky animations but they feel like a natural extension of the og pokemon anyway. like im not complaining here.

Red are megas that just look really bad animated when youre not doing shonen 2d animation cheats. sometimes its pokemon that should be fast and agile just looking bad and clunky and heavy, or pokemon with so many bits and bobs that their limbs cant move properly or they cant twist their torso without stabbing their eye somewhere etc. Where they're kinda designed to only hold the pose they're holding in 2d artwork LOL

maybe it's something like a princess (meganium), a dragon (feraligatr), and a knight (emboar) to have a sort of fairy tale theming? if thats the case, though, they got the type matchups backwards
it shouldve been serperior and empoleon cmon game freak what are you doing

Effect Sequence is a holdover from previous games, where each number corresponds to a different move effect--mostly for the purpose of letting trainer AI have special routines that guide it on the (approximately) correct way to value each type of move. They go up to over 400, so 103 (which has stood for "priority damaging move" going as far back as Gold and Silver) isn't particularly high in that regard.

1. From what I've seen? The latter. Though, I haven't even seen Mewtwo around. Doesn't seem like anyone's found it yet.
2. Definitely not a Turnback Cave situation, there's quite a few rooms, with wild Pokemon also roaming the ruins of the labs.

First answer is a yikes but the second is just about exactly what I asked for. You win some you lose some I suppose (got screenshots of the lab?)
