[SET COMMENTS]
Being one of the two preeminent sand setters in the metagame, Hippowdon finds itself being a near staple on numerous Ground-type teams, being able to fit itself just about anywhere due to its superb physically defensive bulk. Eject Button helps Hippowdon escape from bad matchups and foes dealing powerful hits, to safely get teammates like Choice Band Excadrill in so it can pressure the opposition. Optionally, Hippowdon can run Leftovers instead to better preserve its HP in tandem with Slack Off to ensure that it can stay on the field longer against non-lethal physical attackers like Meowscarada, Weavile, and Ogerpon-W. Earthquake is Hippowdown’s main form of stab, decimating annoying Fire-type threats like Non-Air Balloon Heatran, Mega Charizard X, and Cinderace, while also hitting Steel-, Rock-, and Poison-type foes such as Non-Air Balloon Gholdengo, Iron Boulder, and Alolan Muk. Body Press on the other hand can safely check Ogerpon-C, Blissey, and Meowscarada better. Stealth Rock gives chip damage to Ice-types like SubRoost Kyurem, Articuno, and Alolan Ninetales, hiding both their abilities to repeatedly set up once they come out, granting Excadrill, Landorus, and Mega Garchomp a more threatening presence. Whirlwind is an excellent utility move that lets Hippowdon rack up chip damage on numerous foes on the opposing team, making it a plausible obstacle for setup sweepers like Ceruledge, Gliscor, and Volcarona before they can overwhelm Hippowdon in retaliation. Choice Band Excadrill thrives in sandstorms set by Hippowdon, and thanks to its ability Sand Rush, its newfound Speed can help it check Mega Diancie, Tapu Lele, and Ferrothorn effectively, foes that Special Defense weak Hippowdon would rather not face or come in on. Mamoswine is a great Ice-type move absorber that can threaten to OHKO Assault Vest Tornadus-T and Gliscor with Icicle Crash can stomach hits from both Kyurem and Weavile with the help of Thick Fat, and threaten the two of them with Superpower in return. Great Tusk can handle the Ice-types as mentioned earlier, but can also act as a wallbreaker to get rid of Archaludon quickly. Clodsire is another great teammate for Hippowdon to have thanks to its decent Special Defense and ability to spread poison with Toxic to wear foes down and give both itself and its teammates leverages, however, Clodsire is quite frail, so it too needs to rely on teammates to patch up its crippling physical weaknesses for it as a downside. Gastrodon can absorb Water-type attacks from Greninja, Keldeo, and Mega Swampert with Storm Drain to grant it a boost towards its Special Attack, so that it hits Grass-types like Meowscarada better with Ice Beam. Gliscor provides a Grass-type neutrality and brings utility to the table like Spikes, and the ability to become threatening with the aid of Swords Dance to hit Ferrothorn, and the Ability to stay in long with Poison Heal from its Toxic Orb. Landorus is also a very powerful attacker that can ground any floating foe with Gravity like Celesteela, Air Balloon Gholdengo, and Corviknight, and destroy them with its STAB moves. Finally, Garchomp and its Mega Evolution are great in sand also, since its ability to be both physically and specially offensive decimates both physical and special walls alike like Hisuian Goodra, Imposter Ditto, and Mega Venusaur.

A spread distribution of 252 HP / 128 Def / 128 SpD or 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD can help Hippowdon handle special attackers like Tornadus-T, Choice Specs Greninja, and Mega Venusaur better, while getting the best out of Eject Button and stomaching would be lethal moves like Giga Drain and Ice Beam.

Clodsire is another great teammate for Hippowdon to have thanks to its decent Special Defense and ability to spread poison with Toxic to wear foes down to give both itself and its teammates leverage, however, it’s quite frail, so it too needs to rely on teammates to patch up its crippling Psychic-type for it as a downside. Landorus is also a very powerful attacker that can ground any floating foe with Gravity like Celesteela, Air Balloon Gholdengo, and Corviknight, and destroy them with its STAB moves, despite not having that much usefulness in comparison to Gliscor, despite often being paired with each other. Finally, Garchomp and its Mega Evolution are great in sand also, since its mixed attacking capabilities it decimates physical and special walls alike like Hisuian Goodra, Imposter Ditto, and Mega Venusaur.
