Little things you like about Pokémon

tfw you have the best trainer battle theme in the game 3 times in a row

Here's a thing I randomly thought about thanks to the release of Z-A. I like how, starting with Gen 4 (or the DS era of Pokémon), the date which you caught or obtained a Pokémon can be seen on its summary screen. All thanks to the DS, 3DS and Switch having a built-in clock and calendar, which the GBC and GBA didn't have.

Here's the very first Pokémon I obtained with a date, my starter Infernape on Pearl:

I got it on July, 27, 2007 (the day D/P were released in Europe). 18 years ago! Crazy.

Anyway, I like how you can see the date because it allows you to see exactly when you caught/obtained a Pokémon, and maybe even think about special memories regarding the day some Pokémon were obtained. I know that's the case for me with many of my Pokémon, like with this Infernape from Pearl.

Z-A reuses dex entries for everything when possible, including megas. So you come to Mega Pinsir, and that thing has 5 to pull. Does it grab the ones talking about its newfound power? The scentific look at its new wings & horns? No

After Mega Evolution, it becomes able to fly. Perhaps because it's so happy, it rarely touches the ground.

It grabbed the one about how it's just so happy it can fly. And god bless them.

I’ve only fought the first few, but I like that the Rogue Megas are a much bigger step up in difficulty than the Nobles. In PLA, most people just cheesed the Noble fights by not even bothering to send out their Pokemon and just spamming Balms until it went down, and the attack patterns were fairly predictable. Now you have to keep both yourself and your Pokemon safe and the attack patterns are much more difficult and varied.

Idk if it matters that much, but I really like how slaking is handled by God. It ofc has to be given some bad aspect with no ability, and that's in the fast attack. But it goes high CP and gets a good enough charged imo.

It's been a hot minute since I played Legends Arceus but I'm pretty sure the game itself tells you to send out your Pokémon once you've stunned the Noble to get some hits in.

I like some of the new megas, I won't spoil anything, for instance I am assuming I don't know all of them yet even. But I can say that some are to my favorites. As far as I know not my like top 3, but in the neighborhood of that ranking. Za won't really have a meaningful comp scene with how weird fights are, so I bet I only ever incorporate one new mega, but at some point I can try them all...

God in heaven almighty I hope this series makes it to Alola because trying to get past the USUM Totems with Mt. Lanakila teams is gonna be a hilarious bloodbath
Galar, whose victory road is the final hill on Route 10, will be genuinely interesting. On one hand some pretty limited teams with some wide spread, on the other hand Dynamax boosts, on the other other hand the boosts available vs their boosts...

I also assume he'll do something Quirky for Paldea since it lacks a Victory Road but they call the storyline Victory Road...

I was goign to make a joke about SM's Mt Lanakila but much like GS he'd at least have the rival with Gladion.

Another possibility for Galar that came to mind is that he uses the teams of the postgame Champion Cup regular trainers but those could be too easy since they're all fairly competent fully evolved groups of 5

I figure if he does those teams it'd be as a follow up video ala the E4 videos

And if he did do those I imagine he'd do all the Challengers in the Alola League which would be fun. Show us Tristan's journey, adef.

I don’t know if this counts as a story spoiler, but I’m enjoying how much everyone around the MC in Z-A freely admits that you’re hard-carrying the squad. Don’t think I’ve seen anything like that before.
To be honest ZA has more the problem that apparently everyone in Lumiose is fucking incompetent...

I'm still traumatized by how in the intro you find out you're the *First person in the city* who can catch 5 pokemon apparently :|

The running implication through the majority of the series is what makes us so good as a trainer is our ability to just like. Catch things. Raise a bunch of Pokemon at once. Remembering the concept of evolution and not dragging around a team of 4 level 30 pidgey, in general.

Unless you misinterpreted the dialogue this is funny because it's also just blatantly wrong. There are multiple trainers in the game with teams of 5 and 6, being pretty above average in terms of the full team count especially

If memory serves right Arceus was actually kind of similar about its own player character too.

The Galaxy Expedition Team, especially the Survey Corps which you join, didn't make it very far before the player was isekai'd into the region, and your comrades comment on how far they've genuinely come in their progress in studying the Hisui region and its Pokemon once you entered the picture.

Both because of your exceptional catching ability (something that's even commented on in Arceus iirc) and because of your ability to forge bonds with your own Pokemon. Something Rei/Akari (the one you don't pick) points out because they still couldn't really become a team with their Pikachu.

So Z-A in that regard is kind of reiterating on that idea. In general, it's implied throughout the series that the player character is exceptional and one of a kind, but both Legends games were rather explicit about it in similar ways.

Yeah for L:A the capture thing in particular is something noted as special. iirc it's so dire that a lot of people have trouble doing the "tutorial" quests they give to everyone.

I do think some of that is just from being from different eras; the Player is from the modern Poke-world where this stuff is more common. Granted this would imply we, like, were still somewhat of a capture savant~ since we presumably had no Pokemon caught. But still!

Shoutouts to Nemona who is a good trainer in spite of being absolutely terrible at aiming her throws.

My personal theory is that Nemona has a (possibly undiagnosed) physical disability. She's wearing a wrist brace, it's mentioned that she's terrible at throwing pokeballs, and she's regularly seen as being physically exhausted by things that younger chars handle just fine. I doubt it's intentional, but it makes for an interesting background beat for her.

I've seen her headcanoned as neurodivergent - the brace because she's so obsessive about Pokemon battling that she strains her arm.
