[OVERVIEW]
Dragon
========
Typically outclassed by the likes of Latios and Raging Bolt due to its lower Special Attack stat alongside being less threatening against Flying and Water teams, Hydreigon can be difficult to slot into Dragon teams. However, it provides distinct niches in its Dark typing as well as its access to Nasty Plot, Flamethrower, and Earth Power, allowing it to severely threaten Steel and Ghost teams while still providing a Ground immunity like Latios.

[SET]
Hydreigon @ Leftovers
Name: Nasty Plot (Dragon)
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Dark Pulse
- Flamethrower / Earth Power
- Nasty Plot
- Substitute / Taunt

[SET COMMENTS]
Hydreigon's great stats, colorful movepool, and useful ability let it serve as an excellent wallbreaker on Dragon teams, checking threats like Gholdengo, Iron Treads, and Toxapex. Dark Pulse targets Ghost-types such as Gholdengo, Pecharunt, and Ceruledge. Flamethrower threatens Steel-types like Air Balloon Iron Treads, Corviknight, and Skarmory, while Earth Power aids in the Poison matchup, hitting Clodsire, Alolan Muk, and Toxapex as well as threatening non-Air Balloon Heatran and Hisuian Goodra. Substitute alongside Leftovers makes Hydreigon difficult to revenge kill and offers more setup opportunities against passive Pokemon such as Amoonguss, Klefki, and Toxapex. Alternatively, Taunt stops Ting-Lu, Swampert, and Empoleon from phazing Hydreigon with Whirlwind or Roar, as well as preventing Blissey and Unaware Clodsire from healing.

Hydreigon's ability to break past physical walls such as Sableye, Corviknight, and Skarmory is heavily appreciated by Dragonite. In return, Dragonite threatens Assault Vest Gallade, Keldeo, and Urshifu-R lacking Ice Spinner. Choice Specs Dragapult combats Flutter Mane, Gallade, and opposing Dragon-types faster than Hydreigon, while Hydreigon helps wear down shared checks such as Alolan Muk, specially defensive Corviknight, and Ting-Lu. Archaludon sets up entry hazards to enhance Hydreigon's wallbreaking capabilities and helps take care of the Ogerpon formes and Meowscarada. Hydreigon provides a Ground immunity for Archaludon, helping combat Gliscor, Sand Rush Excadrill, and Hippowdon. Hisuian Goodra takes on Fairy-types such as Flutter Mane, Primarina, and Hatterene while offering Knock Off support and phazing via Dragon Tail, compounding chip damage on enemy teams to help Hydreigon wallbreak. It also appreciates Hydreigon's Ground immunity and ability to threaten Ceruledge, Landorus-T, and Iron Treads. Raging Bolt helps in the Flying and Water matchups, threatening specially defensive Corviknight, Assault Vest Tornadus-T, and Hisuian Samurott. Choice Scarf Latias picks off Fighting-types such as non-Choice Scarf Sneasler, Iron Valiant, and Choice Scarf Great Tusk; provides Healing Wish support; and can cripple shared checks such as Alolan Muk with Trick. Latias cherishes Hydreigon's ability to threaten Ghost-types like Gholdengo, Ceruledge, and offensive Brambleghast. Garchomp removes Alolan Muk, Hisuian Goodra, and Unaware Clodsire, valuing Hydreigon's ability to threaten Skarmory and Air Balloon Gholdengo in return. Additionally, Garchomp provides Spikes and can use Stone Edge to threaten Articuno, which checks Hydreigon should it not opt for Flamethrower.

Hydreigon may use Flash Cannon to hit Fairy-types such as Iron Valiant, Enamorus, and Hatterene; however, it has to be behind a Substitute to do so against the former two, as they outpace it and threaten it back with an OHKO. Focus Blast is an option to deal more damage to Ting-Lu while still threatening Hisuian Goodra and Heatran, but Earth Power and Flamethrower are more consistent and deal super effective damage to more targets. Draco Meteor is a niche option to target opposing Dragon-types and hit Fighting-types such as Urshifu-R and Great Tusk, but it negates Nasty Plot boosts and requires Hydreigon to give up useful utility.
