provided this is true, mega staraptor i can see being pretty damn good as a secondary mega, incin deterrent + hard to hit and remove if you leave it too long + tailwind utility outside of mega. especially with mega metagross (or mawile maybe) i could see it putting in work.
as for the others mega scraft is cool for double intim ig but also ape just got added. mega eel kinda sucks cause its pretty frail, slow and struggles to really get those koes in the first place to spark its ability (modest tbolt isn't even ohkoing bulky zard most of the time and its physical options are ugh) , pyroar can reach nice calcs but does not much else just outclassed mostly by zard tbh. barb kinda just doesnt work in a 2v2 secnario but could be ok..?. galge seems mid as shit, mega falinks is the same-ish just more cheesy. malamar and scolipede are just absolute garbage unsurprisingly. none of these really feel like to be actually that good, especially when your also adding fucking megagross in the same wave

that being said i think this update is generally good for the health of the meta, somewhat excited for M-B but feels a little underwhelming

Mega Raichu X seems to be the biggest winner of this batch. There are no other auto Terrain setters in the meta and the only manual setter worth a damn that I can think of is Whimsicott.

if you need 3 bare passable frauds to stop the goat from not being #1, he is still #1 in our hearts
all hail the fucking cat
Calling Kingambit a fraud when it had a ridiculous amount of usage at NA Internats (also possibly the most used mon on ladder?) and made its way onto the winning team when Incinear didn't is definitely a choice lmao.

Milotic is also fine. Serp is 100% a fraud, though.

Initial thinkings (this is mainly theorycrafting):

Megas:
The raichus are prob going to be very good since x is a manual terrain setter (aka sneasler best partner) while y not only helps with speed control due to zap cannon but also is a nuke.
M-sceptile could be interesting with its access to ep but its most likely just something you chuck on as a second mega if you really lose to the raichus.
M-blaze is interesting but most likely middle of the road though it does throttle incin+gambit in one.
M-pert is going to be bonkers LOL. Knock+wave crash is insane and flip turn is just the cherry on top. Rain was already decent in reg m-a so I see it being even better.
M-mawile is one that I think is under the radar, it has intim pre mega and it ofc hits so insanely hard while dealing with m-floette.
M-meta is going to be fucking insane LOL. Like yeah this fucker is legit going to be in top 3 territory most of the time. Doesn't seem like it kept heavy slam or knock off from what I can see? Still going to be amazing though.
M-staratptor looks like a good option for double mega teams. Faster then m-floette and the like while having intim support pre mega. Add on tailwind support and i think this will have a solid niche due to its ability to snowball+utility.
M-scolipede is dogshit LOL. Yeah I don't think this is going to be good at all.
M-scrafty having intim pre and post mega is great for stuffing certain mons really hard, but its typing looks very awkward in the meta due to double fairy weakness and knock off not being as impactful against stuff like m-meta.
M-eel is prob fine? idk it seems a bit on the frail side and its speed tier feels awkward but pair it with things that can chip down foes for it and you got a scary threat.
M-pyroar actually I think is better then people give it credit for. 126 speed outspeeds the likes of sneasler and m-froslass which is certainly great, and while its coverage is dicks fire stab is going to heavily sting. It also will prob rip apart m-yard teams since flamethrower 2HKO's even max hp yard so yeah. I think people should keep an eye on this cause it def has the tools to be amazing. Oh it also has entrainment so yeah get ready for shit like fire mane typhlosion/volc or some shit LOL.
M-malamar is just, man no. Don't use this.
M-barb prob has some sauce? Shell smash is amazing as m-stoise has shown so maybe it gets used a bit.
M-dragalge I also think looks underexplored on more balance teams since it can check m-yard+m-floette with regen and it has respectable damage to its name.
M-falinks looks dicks, it has a broken move but dedicating mega for that sounds not exactly great.

Non megas:
Plume, qwilfish, musharna look ass.
Overqwil is also prob in that above category but it at least is okay as a swift swimmer? Prob cope though.
Holy fuck grimmsnarl is back get your ass back into retirement sableye (sab still has quash and weather moves so it isn't flipping burgers just yet). Setup megas look like they get buffed immensly from this.
Houndstone is prob okay as a sand rush mon but prob meh.
Ape had rage fist nerfed and lost final gambit. It has defiant ig? But its prob way worse in this meta.
Ghold got nerfed hard with make it rain nerf+losing twave for speed control with it gaining surf ig? I think even still this is going to be good though since steel type and it hard walls sneasler+certain m-meta but will def be worse.

I am still baffled by the choice to not bring back any terrain setter. Raichu teams will at least have uncontested electric terrain, + a guaranteed answer to Venusaur RNG I suppose.

The items they choose to bring back are... interesting.

The weather items on paper sound useful but with Charizard still probably being a top 3-5 mega, you will still have weather wars so I am not sure if there is any point in running those on Pelipper / Tyranitar over other things when weather is going to be overridden before it runs out or the match will be over before then.

Life Orb is also back (but not the choice items) so we are also getting another bump in damage output for non megas. Guess you can't lose a match to a Rock Slide flinch if you're getting 1hkod instead. But LO has not been that common in VGC (outside of the Dynamax interaction) so I am curious of which Pokemon will end up running it as preferred item. Basculegion I would assume? It already had item flexibility and LO lets you run Jolly while getting practically Adamant damage rolls, or get more 1HKO ranges with Adamant itself. Probably Sylveon too (if it even stays meta, Metagross is almost guaranteed to be a top 3 mega and Sylveon just dies to it).

people keep talking about rage fist being nerfed but its not by much for vgc, you were rarely switching anyways and the power is the same (unless im missing smth). tera is the big one for it asw as final gambit being pretty tough but still seems quite solid

Yeah I have to agree, I think Annihilape will still be a monster once people figure out how to use it. It does hate M-Floette and Zard-Y, but maybe it could fit in well on Rain or Sand?

Speaking of Rain, Mega Swampert is an absolute beast. I was worried it would be outclassed by Basculegion, but it absolutely isn't. Way better bulk and defensive typing make it hard to stop, and the lack of Rillaboom (or indeed any other splashable offensive Grass type).

Mega Mawile looks a lot of fun too, could Trick Room actually be viable now? True it does face stiff competition from Mega Metagross and Kingambit, but it is more powerful than them and has better defensive typing.

Scrafty might be a solid 2nd mega in the vein of Tyrnaitar or Aerodactyl. It has Quick Guard and Coaching to distinguish itself from Incin (sadly it didn't get to keep Parting Shot).

Mega Metagross I'm both relieved and sad that it didn't get to keep Heavy Slam. A drawback free 120 BP STAB backed by Tough Claws coming off that attack stat is disgusting. I still think it'll be a great choice, but it won't be the unstoppable demon we feared it would be.

We've also got Life Orb, Zoom Lens and Wide Lens back, so Maushold can run Population Bomb again. Weather sweepers like Venusaur and Excadrill that don't get their STABs boosted could enjoy this too.

Overall I'm quite happy with this update, I think it will shake the meta up nicely. I'm dissapointed we didn't get to find out Mega Golisopod and Tatsugiri's abilities, but I think the Z megas and the legendary megas won't be coming for a while. I'm not in any rush to have Mega Salamence back - that thing was disgusting in Gen 7, even after the Aerilate nerf.

this is prob just me but ive 3-0ed a couple games with speed boost protect --> sd --> protect --> mega with scolipede, offsets the massive speed drop and if oppurtunity is provided to grab another sd can actually delete entire teams with just sd protect and megahorn, honestly really fun

My first impressions during the ladder, Mega Staraptor is everywhere and pretty annoying to deal with, between screens from an ally like Grimmsnarl, Charm from Whimsicott or redirection and healing from Sinistcha. It's manageable but irritating, as you can expect from its kind.

I've been laddering with Mega Metagross. Even with the loss of Heavy Slam--bless you, a wise decision--, it still functions very well. Iirc, uninvested Iron Head still OHKOs all but the bulkiest Mega Floette possible. I had a lot of fun pairing Mega Metagross with Coaching Sneasler. Incineroar and Kingambit haven't been much of a problem to it so far even when Sneasler wasn't or was no longer present since Body Press does a ton of damage. Non Chople Berry Kingambit even dies to Body Press with the right Def investment. Basculegion can be annoying, though, unless you decide to run Thunder Punch or Psychic Fangs. I haven't fully settled on Mega Metagross's movepool. And ofc, that's team dependent. Since this Pokémon pairs well with Sneasler, I figured Ice Punch would be necessary to handle Garchomp. Kingambit also makes for a good partner as it handles Basculegion and can also benefit from Coaching while punishing Intimidate with its Defiant ability.

I ran into a few Mega Eelektross teams, and the Mega has been underwhelming so far. Which makes sense since it's too reliant on OHKOs to become threatening, and its damage output is nothing truly special. It's susceptible to Intimidate, thus, special sets may seem more appealing, unless you go for a Coil set and pair it with anti Intimidate options. You also need some pre-work if you want to reliably take out certain targets, like Mega Charizard-Y; bulky versions can live Thunderbolt, for instance. Ofc, it's too early to tell. I'm sure as time goes on, people will optimize Mega Eelektross.

Now, I will talk about some of the Pokémon I haven't faced or used yet. I think Mega Pyroar has potential. As some people have already pointed out, it is faster than Sneasler and Mega Froslass. But also, imo, it is very similar to Mega Salamence who loves running Double-Edge and Hyper Voice. Mega Pyroar can basically do the same thing with Flare Blitz and Heat Wave if you wanted to. Furthermore, Overheat is a nuclear option. And if you want to go crazy, Helping Hand boosted Hyper Beam takes out Garchomp. Mega Pyroar seems useable.

Mega Dragalge could be an interesting options for Balance teams. I'm sure you could do sth with poisoning, Flip Turn, and Intimidate cycling. (Wolfey, where are thou?) Sure, the metagame can be hostile between Garchomp and Kingambit but that's why you have friends to rely on. Perhaps, an Ice Pokémon like Weavile or Mamoswine could help? Since it's one of my favourite Mega Pokémon, I'll definitely experiment with Mega Dragalge.

Mega Mawile. I'm not quite sure how viable this thing will be. It competes with Kingambit who doesn't fear Intimidate. So, Trick Room might be necessary to distinguish it a bit more.

Ok so going through the mons one by one:
Raichu X feels good as an uncontested terrain setter in this format, though there isn't much that benefits from Electric Terrain. The most viable Rising Voltage users in the format are Raichu X itself, which it can use to bypass recoil that would be there from a Volt Tackle set, or Jolteon. It is a nice secondary mega against rain though imo, being able to redirect Electro shot and as a bonus it counters both Raichu forms without Mega Evolution. Being able to threaten Zard and to an extent Floette (32 Atk Raichu Volt Tackle vs. 2 HP / 0 Def Mega Floette in Electric Terrain: 153-181 (101.3 - 119.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO) is nice.

Raichu Y is cool and all, with Zap Cannon for Yard and Focus Blast for Gambit. 160 base Spa is really impressive too. Thankfully the only real competition for special electric is Rotom-W, so maybe Raichu Y will see niche play among Raichu teams, since I'm not sure Raichu will be a primary Mega in MB.

Vileplume isn't much to talk about, it could do something with Acid Spray + Chlorophyll next to Yard but that's all I see.

Qwilfish is never making it in a format with Toxapex.

Sceptile getting Earth Power is cool and all, and the speed is nice, but lightning rod isn't an amazing ability for a mega and its coverage is bad into the established metagame.

Blaziken I actually have serious hopes for. Sash Coaching or baton pass sets can help boost the team, and Swords Dance Mega Blaziken provides an alternative to Xard on certain teams, single turn of Swords Dance + Protect is two Dragon Dance worth.

Swampert is going to be really nice for rain teams, though does face an issue that rain will end up tripling waters with Basc Peli Pert. Earthquake next to Pelipper is really nice to go for off the bat considering Incineroar is hard to bring into rain. Being immune to Electric is quite nice too if Raichu gains popularity. Ice Punch is probably the play of third move to stave off Garchomp, though I can see options like secondary mega Mega Swampert using Wide Guard. (Just heard it got wave crash too which is a crazy buff)

Mega Mawile has a base attack of effectively 261. It honestly seems like a nice mon for Trick Room teams, Rock Slide can threaten Yard pretty heavily if you have the speed advantage.

Mega Metagross is a really good addition into the metagame, it outspeeds Floette and Garchomp with bulk to spare, coverage wise its got huge defense for body press, Ice Punch for Garchomp, Rock Slide for Charizard, Zen Headbutt for Sneasler/Toxapex/Venusaur/Annihilape, etc. We might see a lot of Jolly sets without Bullet Punch and then Bulky Bullet Punch adamant sets.

Staraptor is honestly not too bad, its an intimidator that can boost its defenses, so can take full advantage of Sinistcha. Being weak to Floette is kinda ass though so we'll see how it does. Base 110 for tailwind is really neat however, especially with intimidate to mitigate the aero weakness. Could see play as an aero alternative.

I can't see Musharna doing anything this format.

Scolipede mega unfortunately doesn't get enough to work. Iron Defense speed boost sets are probably the best but there's a million and one set up sweepers around and many of them don't get Heat waved away by Yard.

Scrafty with two intims in one is nice but I feel like you mega so rarely and you're so weak to sylv/Floette that you'd rather just use Incineroar.

Eelektross getting Beast Boost is p cool but its movepool is what holds it back, maybe it got something new. Speed stat is also a bit awful.

Pyroar is just far worse yard, Malamar did not get saved, and Barbaracle got worse typing and only 600 bst to show for it.

Dragalge feels like a Mega Toxapex, good defences, maybe an Acid Spray set could be nice as a very slow position heavy team.

Grimmsnarl losing twave is a bit meh, but it still has plenty of tools. Fake Out, Parting Shot, Sucker Punch, and Scary Face come to mind. Grimmsnarl could either go Roseli or Light Clay, depending on the pace of the team.

Mega Falinks after an omniboost is a pretty funny cheese team idea, might not be the most serious but its funny.

Overqwil's typing is amazing, Gunk Shot and Throat Chop are really good into Floette and Incin, and its got a decent support pool.

Houndstone I can definitely see next to basc on sand for a really brutal last respects team.

Annihilape and Gholdengo suffer a lot from losing terastallization, though the current metagame is very conducive to set up and they can pair with things like Mega Delphox as a secondary set up sweeper. The Rage Fist nerf means Ape is more or less stuck in one place, probably meaning the bulk up will remain THE ape set. Gholdengo's MIR nerf hits hard for consistency but its still a threat, I think on rain this thing could actually do well since Swampert actually does well into a lot of Gholdengo counters. Choice Scarf Power Gem Gholdengo could also be really good on offense teams.

I've been trying out charm or tickle whim or scaryface parting shot grimmsnarl. I haven't figured out which I like better. Whim adds the tailwind + encore ability while grim provides fake out and parting shot pressure on opp. Overall they have been working well.
any idea about Staraptor+charm?

Mega Pyroar seems like good competition for Mega Charizard Y, but while Zard Y can be put on many different teams, paired with top threats, Mega Pyroar instead will probably fill a more Sun team role, as when paired with Helping Hand Torkoal, it can effectively triple its damage. It also pairs well with quite a few Sun Pokemon, such as Venusaur, which helps with Rock and Water types with Solar Beam/Energy Ball and Heliolisk, which helps with Water types, Charizard Y, and potentially Garchomp if it runs Dragon Pulse. I believe both Mega Pyroar and Mega Charizard Y will see use, neither canceling out the other’s viability, despite filling effectively the same role.

Love the thorough breakdown! Vileplume feels like the budget Lilligant, I believe it still should get After You...? Falinks probably isn't surviving in a Delphox and Floette setup team environment. Pyroar (maybe I am pushing the limits) feels like the Sylveon-Floette interaction but vs Zard Y. Fire Mane stacking with Sun + maybe late game last respects immunity as a niche? But its honestly wishful thinking more than anything on my part

Mega Electross feels the most potent here. Being able to blend in alongside Garchomp spamming earthquakes, having 0 weaknesses, alot of pieces already present to support this beast
I feel like Zardy Goodstuffs isn't going anywhere... The last slot may be up for debate but imo Floette still works pretty well. the biggest added threat to Floette is Metagross which Garchomp, Basc, Gambit and Zard Y feel more than welcome to take care of. Maybe Eelektross is a good 6th slot given how well it patches up Rain and Mirrors especially if they come with Aerodactyl over Whimsi. Gambit might just switch over to running Life orb... Garchomp could benefit from Scarf more now that Metagross is in the format, but these 5-6 mons are still the most solid core.
An Idea I had for Rai Y was Sinistcha + Incin and have it be a bulky Nasty Plot sweeper (inspired by Cybertron's vid) Kingambit, Basc and Tyranitar are probably the biggest threat to this duo and they are handled so well by No Guard Focus Blast and Zap Cannons. Rai Y could also pressure Rai X comps by benefitting from electric terrain
Shame to see Mawile and Scrafty not get a solid trick room setter piece getting added. I get that adding Gothitelle this early could feel like overkill but Trick room as an archetype still doesn't feel solid... Would have to test and see where Scrafty + Farig goes. Mawile can atleast put up vs late game scenarios with sucker punch.
Gholdengo feels like it would be a solid Choice Scarf mon right now, -2 with Make it Rain and then Nasty Plotting to get it back up doesn't feel as worth it right now even thought the supporting pieces are there.
Mausape still feels solid but no tera on Ape would hurt this archetype, Sinistcha in the back makes alot of sense but what are you doing vs Zard Y spamming heat waves? Not much.
Grimmsnarl could be a fun replacement on Sableye ArchRain teams, but honestly depending on how the metagame develops, not having fake out immunity might actually be worse off. Given how many things you can trigger with Spirit Break, Foul Play Sableye might still be the go to.
IDK why but I'm really fascinated by (Paradox) Mega Staraptor, Staraptor's been a solid mon in low power formats by itself. I still remember the reckless choice band set that Ashton Cox piloted in 2014 worlds, its absurdly strong, mega Staraptor being able to stack defense boosts via Close Combats? I would have never guessed it would do by the looks but excited to see what comes of it, especially if you lead with the base form carrying Intimidate, now neutral to rock slide and you just take care of opposing Kingambits with your own CC.

As someone who managed to reach Masterball Tier within a day, Mega Staraptor feels like the #1 best new Mega. Contrary is very easy to Prop, and you have things like Charm from Whimsicott and Maushold for support to bring in case they your opponent doesn't have intimidate. Mega Metagross and Mawile are also popular thanks to matchup against Floette, though the latter is often paired with Zard-Y, which devours them for breakfast. Other than the format seems to be very similar to the previous one, the Charizard-Garchomp-Kingambit-Basculegion is still dominating.
