CAP 37 So Far

-----

In this stage we will first reflect on the process so far, discussing what we've learned from this process, how this well we have fulfilled its concept, and what impact CAP 37 had on the metagame. After that, we will discuss some possible minor tweaks to the product in order to better fulfill our goals. Please follow the Topic Leader's instructions and don't propose any specific changes until they say so.

Changes allowed:
  • Move additions and removals
  • Changes to secondary ability
  • Small stat changes
Changes not allowed
  • Typing changes
  • Changes to primary ability
  • Large stat changes

Long time no see, CAP faithful. We've had 8 weeks of CAPPL and a Playtest tournament's worth of SV CAP games between Obliteryx's 1.0 release and now, and now that we have this sample size in mind, we can answer a few key questions about Obliteryx and its relation to the metagame and its process. Let's begin!
  1. Has Obliteryx fulfilled its concept?
  2. How has Obliteryx performed in the CAP metagame? Is its role in the metagame significantly different than what we envisioned for it? What aspects of Obliteryx have the most impact on its current metagame state?
  3. What changes to Obliteryx are needed, if any? Does its power level and overall viability need to be adjusted? If so, in which direction?
  4. What are some key takeaways from CAP37 as a whole? What have we learned?
Let's tentatively say 48-72 hours for this first round of questions. Cheers!

tldr: remove analytic, process good, learnt a lot
Has Obliteryx fulfilled its concept?

Oh, and how. There were worries about Beak Blast not being conditional enough, as it is still a 100 BP, 24 PP move on a type with no immunities. Even the burn effect does not activate too often in games. But I think this “threat is greater than the execution” build really explores conditionality in practice, where opponents have a choice in whether to activate it or not. Obliteryx was built to make progress no matter or because of what they do. So the question for opponents becomes: what among attacking, switching, setup, status, and other utility options can you use when Obliteryx might have an answer for everything?

I think of what playtest winner ILSB said, that Obliteryx can “develop its own condition 100% of the time by itself”, although their point was more so that it is so oppressive in its power that it overshadows the more interesting conditionality aspects. But something I've noticed due to this process is that successful users of conditional moves often make themselves “less conditional” due to an intersection of various factors, as Obliteryx has done here. The ultimate reverse sweep Pokémon Kingambit, with Sucker Punch, Supreme Overlord, and Swords Dance, combined with its good bulk, is also fairly unconditional in its gameplan. It punishes most things you can do against it, and even when you are in an endgame 1v1 against it, the odds are always in its favour. Substitute + Focus Punch follows the same plan. Mirror Coat Alomomola has Assault Vest and Regenerator as well as utility moves and pivoting to take the least amount of punishment while having the maximum flexibility. And so on.

I personally have learnt a lot about conditionality through Obliteryx’s process as well as Obliteryx the product. If Obliteryx is somewhat unconditional in practice, this is a result of its options against varying conditionalities (opponents’ Physical attacks, setup, status, switching, using attacks on it) layering on top of each other and leaving a very narrow space for counterplay. This is more interesting than plain ol’ power… which Obliteryx also possesses through Analytic, and which is somewhat overshadowing these interesting dynamics at the moment.

How has Obliteryx performed in the CAP metagame? Is its role in the metagame significantly different than what we envisioned for it? What aspects of Obliteryx have the most impact on its current metagame state?

To say it has done very well is an understatement. One of the top usage % in CAPPL (although this might also be new toy syndrome), along with a high winning % during most weeks. Its offensive prowess as well the power boost from Analytic have pushed it more into a wallbreaker role rather than a progress-making tank. On ladder, usage during the first month was 60-40 in favour of Opportunist, although I imagine the trend has somewhat shifted to favour Analytic even though I don’t have the raw stats. Our designated targets are still good, but Revenankh, Zamazenta, and Great Tusk all need to be more careful now, needing team support or different team structures to deal with the Obliteryx threat. Opportunist has provided some dopamine activation, clip-worthy moments of stealing boosts from Gliscor, Snaelstrom, Ogerpon, Chuggalong, Dragonite, the Bulk Up bros Hemogoblin and Revenankh, among others, and is a major factor in teambuilding as well as in-game decisions. No longer can you start setting up mid-game with some of these Pokémon and get your free win. On the other hand, Obliteryx’s teammates really appreciate how it limits options for opponents just through its existence in the back. I have a core I call “guys that sit in the back, menacingly”, with Opportunist Obliteryx/Hatterene/Chuggalong, and it narrows opponent options by denying setup, status, hazards, and priority while opening up your own. Very fun to use. Taunt is the bane of slower teams, and I’ve seen high-level players also run Stealth Rock successfully.

Spammernoob cooked up the now iconic Red Card set, which can turn games into 6v5s with a pretty good chance for such a strong outcome. Analytic generally improves this strategy with the power boost it provides. Heavy-Duty Boots is the vanilla set as expected, but other items like Dark Glasses have also seen use. Life Orb and Choice Band combined with Analytic give ridiculous levels of power but are not the main sets.

Sets are often maximum HP combined with either maximum Attack or Defense, with quite a lot of flexibility in how many Speed EVs to run. Benchmarks include outspeeding in the mirror or underspeeding for Analytic sets; being able to Taunt uninvested Corviknight or Arghonaut; or, for Body Press sets, outspeeding maximum Speed Tyranitar.

I think at the moment Analytic is the biggest winner (in terms of all the benefits it gets, not necessarily due to its viability being better than Opportunist’s) even though perhaps Opportunist has the bigger metagame impact. Opportunist forces considerations in teambuilding and move-choice during games until Obliteryx is brought out, but then Obliteryx can KO you with an Analytic-boosted attack anyway. You cannot really predict that opponents are running Analytic and start boosting up either, because that might lead to a quick 6-0. This was the kind of bluff game that our ability leader brought up during secondary ability discussion, and ironically, the condition of “which ability is it running” does lead to a better synergistic whole than the Pokémon with either ability alone. But surely this is not healthy.

What changes to Obliteryx are needed, if any? Does its power level and overall viability need to be adjusted? If so, in which direction?

Due to all of the reasons above, removing Analytic has been the most popular suggestion by far and I back it 100%. I think other than that, a small nerf in bulk could be warranted. I like a small nerf to Special Defense as it is not crucial to the dynamics that follow from Beak Blast, but spoo mentioned that a HP nerf could make choosing between bulky or offensive sets more of a decision.

If Analytic is removed, it also affects the viability of Stealth Rock and Taunt sets, so I don’t think we need to worry about these options being too strong on their own.

What are some key takeaways from CAP37 as a whole? What have we learned?

At a concept level, it was a fantastic exploration of conditional moves and conditionality in general.

From a process level, I really liked viol and bass’s dichotomy of “needs versus wants” while designing a Pokémon. Viability was never the most pressing issue, with Beak Blast being an underrated but undeniably good move as seen from its usage in STABmons. Further choices like Dark/Flying; a compressed but complete three-move combination in Beak Blast, Knock Off and Roost; our fourth-slot options; and tanky stats meant that it would be quite surprising if Obliteryx wasn’t viable. Maybe Analytic as a secondary was a step too far, maybe it wasn’t, but our options throughout were wants in service of the concept, not viability. I prefer this to directionless bloat in service of viability or patch-up options in case decisions during previous parts of the process weren’t enough. Although perhaps we as a community need to appreciate the value of “less is more” in CAP (I, for example, still placed Analytic above No Competitive Ability during the secondary poll)

Perhaps we could afford both direction and viability because of the nature of the concept (i.e., focus on a specific type of thing). This kind of concept is not nourishing soil for the innovative solutions that emerge when both viability and concept-fulfilment are in question, such as No Guard Inferno for Ramnarok from recent memory. But Perfect Conditions was still a deep exploration of its target topic, and is not any lesser for the relatively easier implementation.

Finally, I want to just touch on the Stakeout -1 decision from a process level. While I was personally okay with either having it on the slate or not (same for Analytic during secondary), I believe that a little more discussion time regarding this decision with the TL participating in the thread would have been better. This extra discussion time would not be in hopes that people could convince the TL with just one more argument that they missed, of course not, but more to adhere to the community engagement vision of CAP. I think the TL’s word having so much weight makes their situation a tightrope walk: if they say too much, they can have undue influence on the process; if they abstain, some of their decisions might come as a surprise to the community. I think a signal of intention and a short discussion period thereafter would allow for voices both in support or against their decisions to be heard (and there would be both), even if the final decision might be unaffected by this.

I was one of the main advocates for Analytic during the secondary ability stage, but the option I liked the most was NCA. That's still true for me today - I believe we should replace Analytic with NCA.

I am glad we tried Analytic over other options like Natural Cure. I think the other proposed secondaries would've been effectively useless, and probably remained on Obliteryx forever (in the tradition of most other useless secondaries). Analytic sets are a powerful and interesting exploration of the concept in their own right, which was cool to see for a short while. That's what secondaries are supposed to do. Issue is that it's not at the right power level for us. To clarify: I don't believe Analytic sets are inherently busted, or even the best set the majority of the time — I maintain that Opportunist sets are a bit more useful overall — it's just that Obliteryx is doing way too much atm. Mon is crazy versatile and all of its sets are amazing. This CAP doesn't have to be like S- rank lol. Also, no one predicted the Analytic red card stuff cropping up, and that shit sucks to play against.

Obli's stat spread is also too good. Many will agree on this, but disagree on what to do about it. To provide some context for my argument, here is the EV spread I have been running the most:

Obliteryx @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Opportunist
Tera Type: Whatever you want
EVs: 248 HP / 160 Atk / 20 Def / 52 SpD / 28 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Knock Off
- Beak Blast
- Roost
- Stealth Rock / Taunt / Sucker Punch

Defense lives a +2 five-hit Miasmaw Scale Shot. This is an easy benchmark to hit with only 20 EVs, and Miasmaw is scary for balance, so why not. 48 EVs hit a Chuggalong benchmark, but going 4 more to 52 will let you eat two consecutive MIRs from Gholdengo, very nice. Speed for Corviknight, rest into Attack. However, this is very versatile. You can disinvest from Attack and run 92+ Defense to live two Tera'd Cudgels from Ogerpon-W - I run this spread on many bulkier teams. Dropping Attack even further to 44, the minimum necessary to switch in on a Gliscor's SD and 2HKO with Beak Blast through two rounds of Poison Heal, and investing the rest into SpDf (248 HP / 44 Atk / 92+ Def / 92 SpD / 28 Spe) is also pretty good. You can hit any/all of these benchmarks, or say fuck it and run max HP + max Atk/Def. Other people also have their own unique spreads, which I'm sure look different to this.

Point is, Obli can choose very freely where it wants to lie on the spectrum of bulk vs strength. My proposal is a small HP cut. This is a mon that's bulkier than Skarmory on the physical side, and about as bulky as Garganacl on the special side. And we hit as hard as Terrakion. That's CRAZY man. I think being able to choose what benchmarks you want to hit is a cool feature, but it can hit way too many right now. Decreasing HP will make it a real tradeoff between hitting your important bulk benchmarks and doing proper damage.

I don't find current Opportunist Obliteryx broken or oppressive, it's just a lil' too good at what it does. I don't want to nerf Opportunist sets into the ground. Accounting for Beak Blast + Knock Off switch-ins in the builder has been painful at times, but on the flipside, Obli provides so much great role compression that I've really enjoyed having access to. I think it's a net-positive addition. Small bulk decrease and we're golden.

Part of me kinda wants to give this mon Defog. Maybe in addition to Rocks, maybe replacing Rocks, I'm not sure yet. We have great type synergy with many of the best current setters, arguably better synergy than Rocks Obli has with the current removers. Replacing Rocks with Defog would also cut down greatly on lead Read Card sets, which I believe to be uncompetitive. Fitting good removal has been one of the biggest hurdles in building SV CAP lately, IMO. The days of slapping a Libra on your team and calling it a day are over. We have too many spinblockers, too many great hazard setters, and too many great Knock Off users. Many teams want double removal, or unblockable removal at the very least. Super-fat teams are especially starved for consistent removal outside of Mollux. I think it could be a positive change for the tier, but I'm still mulling it over - just wanted to raise the possibility.

I've spent too long talking about potential changes now, so I'll just echo most of what Guingil had to say about the process. I'd call this a total success. Very happy with our end product, despite being a little overtuned - hats off to the TLT.

Has Obliteryx fulfilled its concept?
Yes, it has, maybe too well since everything about it is so conditional that in the end at least one of the conditions is met (Beak Blast -> contact move, Opportunist -> setup move, Analytic -> switching, Knock -> Item held (broad), Sucker Punch -> move clicked (broad) among other status moves). I think this is good but maybe a bit limiting especially when you can consider you don't have a lot of options to prevent it from making any kind of progress.
How has Obliteryx performed in the CAP metagame?
Very well. It is not new toy syndrome, it is cracked. Clicking strong Knock Off is and will always be cracked. Tyranitar and Weavile have shown us what strong Knock Off can do and thats where Obliteryx definately shines, especially when Dark is usually switched in to from Fighting types and Fairy types, both of which are nuked by Beak Blast, especially Fighting types who are more common switch ins to it since fairies hate losing their Item more on average. Opportunist can nullify Calm Mind/Bulk Up (or general setup) to make its bulk feel even stronger than it already is and that helps against the Revenankh problem immensely. Tera Fire infront of Hemogoblin also renders it useless and makes Hemogoblin work for Obliteryx in the way that either it switches out into a partner that probably can't take 2 Beak Blasts or it clicks Bulk Up and lets Obliteryx sweep (this has happened to me before, the Black Glasses bluffed Analytic and it swept me). Otherwise it targets another threat we wanted to keep in control more in Zamazenta, nullifying the IDBP sets (though Roar + Tera Fire / Steel does end up winning against it) and beating the HDB sets through sheer bulk and Beak Blast ("No touchy, no touchy!" - Zamazenta probably).
What changes to Obliteryx are needed, if any?
-Analytic. Please. Don't let Alomomola be 2HKOd after rocks (also gets burned from Flip Turn) and don't let every single offensive mon in the meta be KO'd by Knock Off / Beak Blast -> Sucker Punch. My issue with Analytic isn't that its too good as a wallbreaker, more that nearly everything that
could switch into it is offensive or has no recovery to do it often and it just kills offense
252+ Atk Analytic burned Obliteryx Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 104 HP / 0 Def Kitsunoh: 258-304 (78.8 - 92.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Analytic Obliteryx Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Equilibra: 232-274 (56.8 - 67.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Analytic Obliteryx Beak Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Hemogoblin: 259-306 (67.4 - 79.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO.
252+ Atk Obliteryx Beak Blast vs. 0 HP / 252+ Def Alomomola: 148-175 (31.4 - 37.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO (62% + burn minimum before Alo can Flip Turn)
Think about what you've done here.
Otherwise I think 102/126/90 is a lot of bulk for something like this, so taking away some HP would be cool to actually be threatened by super effective moves more than it threatens the mon with the type advantage.
252 Atk Cornerstone Mask Ogerpon-Cornerstone Ivy Cudgel vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Obliteryx: 306-360 (88.6 - 104.3%) -- 25% chance to OHKO
252+ Atk Obliteryx Beak Blast vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Ogerpon-Cornerstone: 204-241 (67.7 - 80%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (dies to Sucker Punch after)
252+ Atk Pixilate Hemogoblin Extreme Speed vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Obliteryx: 230-272 (66.6 - 78.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Obliteryx Beak Blast vs. 40 HP / 0 Def Hemogoblin: 201-237 (60.7 - 71.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Shox Volt Switch vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Obliteryx: 176-210 (51 - 60.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Obliteryx Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Shox: 193-228 (40.5 - 47.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
All of this is pushed so that Obliteryx does more damage than it takes with Analytic.
We basically have another Ting-Lu where it can't be OHKOed by basically any move without Band, Specs or some Boost (can't do that anyway), but this Ting-Lu can 2HKO your whole team.

What are some key takeaways from CAP37 as a whole?
From what I got in the process, we kept trying to solve every issue it had, and if we give something everything, we can't expect it to not do everything. Something has weaknesses so it can be exploited, if something with no weaknesses exists then how do you want to beat it? Beak Blast takes a turn to come out so opponents can set up on us! Give it Opportunist! What if the target switches out first? Give it Stakeout Analytic! What if it gets statused first? Give it Natural Cure (didn't happen in the end but this one really is "just switch out you'll be fine", you should have status absorbers on your team anyway or you're getting steamrolled by every status spam team ever / the latest CCAT). The opponent doesn't want to attack you? Taunt it, it has to then! The question is, whats left? If you can't set up in front of it, can't switch out of it, can't Pivot on it, can't attack it in general, has perfect coverage STAB that is only resisted by mons with no recovery (and Dedene!), you need to be able to exploit it somehow or it will end up suffocating with you needing one slot dedicated to just Obliteryx which is super limiting, at least with rev I could check Hemo, Rev and Cawmodore while setting Rocks and Pivoting in one slot, which is much harder with Obliteryx.

Hey all! Might be a bit less structured than most but just wanted to chime in here:
What changes to Obliteryx are needed, if any? Does its power level and overall viability need to be adjusted? If so, in which direction?

-Analytic I am very much for. Definitely makes it a tad too overbearing to switch into when its stats are already high enough to still punish switchins.

As for alternative abilities, I think something a little plainer but still useful would be +Pressure, which i think is both healthy for determining the set as it announces itself, but also i believe still has a lot of utility on some teams against higher power physical attackers relying on low PP moves like Great Tusk, Zamazenta, etc. as well as removing doom desires and earth powers from Equilibra, lastly also useful in the mirror match. Would likely be more lower usage but another CAP with Pressure I believe is warranted.

I have heard Natural Cure be floated as an option, I think it would be good but also personally might be a bit much - as some of the better counterplay to Obliteryx *is* status currently, and letting it be another pseudo-immune in a tier already saturated with status immune options is a bit scary imo.

On the topic of stats, I am of the belief that these do not need to be modified much if Analytic goes, but as this would mean Opportunist is more common again I think a minor speed nerf (64 -> 60) would actually do a lot to increase the viability of options like Tyranitar to come in and threaten it out without a surprise Body Press making that option a bit shaky. Obliteryx's bulk is already so immense that it can get away with a lot of speed invest sometimes and this is a small way to dissuade that.

I'm here as Body Press's #1 hater. Opportunist / Encore means we realistically match very well into Kingambit without needing Press, and completely removing Tyranitar as a solid check really sucks for counterplay.

Analytic is really cool, but also needs to go.

I'm not convinced we need to do much more than maybe the HP nerfs spoo proposed.

Swap Rocks for Defog, its what our typing wants us to do. The Spin mindgames haven't really happened because we realistically nuke all the spinners super hard with either Knock, or they're hit SE by Blast (Tusk).

I had a longer post detailing some of my thoughts, but I just lost it all by some cruel twist of fate and I'd like to get discussion rolling here, so here are my brief thoughts:

Obliteryx easily actualized its concept and in some ways I'd say that this actualization was pretty maximalist. Beak Blast was supplemented by stats, Abilities, and moves that all help Obliteryx use Beak Blast more effectively. This has also contributed to Obliteryx being incredibly overbearing on the CAP metagame; Obliteryx has been one of the top 3 most used Pokemon every single week of CAPPL since the very beginning, and has shown time and time again to be able to force incredible progress via damage, status, hazards, and setup denial. Diminishing some of these avenues by which Obliteryx can impact a game should reduce Obliteryx's overall impact both in-game and in the builder.

We seem to near-universally agree that Obliteryx does require some changes on a small-to-moderate level, and we've already started with some informal suggestions, so I'll open the stage to discussion and submission of nerf packages.

Its not a double post if Earthflaxs posts in between.

-Analytic
+NCA
-Body Press
-Stealth Rock
+Defog

Simple logic here. Analytic is just too much damage going out for a mon with this clickable of STAB moves, aka Knock being the best widely available move in the game, and Beak Blast letting you just nuke stuff super hard. Body Press imo should go purely due to deleting Tar, a mon that resists our dual stab, has a SE non-contact move. Stealth Rock is cool, but Defog is cooler, and I think shifting which supportive role we play likely helps us as a whole given our respective synergy with the rockers and removal in the tier.

Final submission:

-Analytic
-Stealth Rock
+Defog
-7 HP

Explanation:

Defog > Rocks
We gave this mon Rocks because of Beak Blast's interaction with Rapid Spin, but in practice, the two moves almost never collide. Defog seems like a better fit for our typing (we synergize with setters better than removers, mostly), cuts down on the lead Rocks + Red Card nonsense, and is probably a healthier option for the meta at large (we need good foggers).

-7 HP -5 SpD:
You can no longer hit all main three benchmarks I consider important - two tera'd Woger Cudgels, two Ghold MIRs, and winning the SD Gliscor 1v1. Hitting both defensive benchmarks leaves you with with a spread of Impish 248 HP / 132 Def / 120 SpD / 8 Spe - but this forces you to give up all attack investment. Alternatively you can run the 44 Atk for Gliscor, or an even more offensive spread with Adamant and heavy Atk investment, but you'll have to give up bulk to do so.

This lets Obliteryx remain malleable in the builder, easily able to choose whether it wants to flex into a more offensive or defensive role, but it can't do everything at once anymore.

We've done it, we've hit another home run, except this one killed someone in the stands :revenankh: but we're not really all that sad about it. Third (technically fourth) highest attack stat we've given to a CAP, though with the Analytic boost its an equivalent 181 Attack. In my experience, Analytic really only functioned as a tool to dominate the Terry 1v1, but yeah the damage is kinda absurd and further cements the bird as having no counters, only decent checks. Same with Encore, I've seen it like never but it shakes up Terry's game a little too much. Go on, axe Encore for the third time.

I've been wanting Defog as an option on something less vulnerable since we got the typing confirmed. All the Defoggers in CAP are Ground-weak :kitsunoh::cyclohm::astrolotl::smokomodo:, and :weezing-galar:, so another reliable remover like :corviknight: who actually threatens the string cheese man :gholdengo: would be great. Don't mind keeping Stealth Rock, as being an unconventional setter is neat, though I'm not against its removal.

I'm also still gunning for Thermal Exchange, the attack boost would rarely come up, RIP :mollux:, :ramnarok: still hits us with both coverage moves tho. Essentially, we'd be trading Terry's passive utility for the ability to fiddle with soft checks reliant on burn. Every other status should be kept on the table. If not :baxcalibur: signature, I'd at least like something mildly useful. I know Terry is far from a one-trick pony, though the purpose of this PPL is to make him more of one.

Why change the identity of a pokemon that has a perfectly fine identity and whose problem is with its power level? Let's not overcomplicate things. -5 speed allows :equilibra:, :clefable:, :primarina:, and :tyranitar: to outspeed obliteryx, who will still invest in speed enough to taunt :corviknight: but will need 68 ev's instead of the current spreads' 28.

-Knock Off

Seems like an interesting route that limits the brainless guaranteed progress Oblit forces while placing more emphasis on Beak Blast. It also places more pressure on the 4th moveslot, as now Taunt/Encore become more important for sticking progress vs. fat.

I think Analytic is kinda cool, and plays more into our concept than Knock. Also, this will maybe make people use Darkest Lariat, which is kinda funny.

Honestly, this could lead to it being underpowered, but I feel like some people will get mad if I tack on a compensatory +5 Atk or something so I'll leave it at this for now.

-10 Attack
-Knock Off, -Body Press
+Payback

With the attack nerf, max attack Analytic Knock + Sucker no longer guarantees KO on :ramnarok:, :krilowatt:, :kyurem: or :hatterene: (With the move gone, the rolls are all in the defensive mon's favour). The sheer amount of damage has to be addressed somehow, and without removing Analytic this is the simplest way.

Removal of Knock Off gets rid of its strongest spammable STAB option; now, you have to go Darkest Lariat for consistent damage, Crunch for drop fishing or Payback for high damage. Although all these options have higher power, the lack of removal and the first boosted hit makes them easier to switch into.

With the amount of damage Obliteryx can do with its STABs, there should be Pokemon in the meta able to counter it. Having coverage that cuts down the number of Pokemon able to switch into its nuke attacks is too much.

Payback works well with the concept, and with Analytic - which I am against removing, because it fits so nicely with the concept that it could've been made for it. The doubling doesn't activate on switches, which also helps with the oppressiveness of having to take a giant hit to get your counter in - Obliteryx will have to decide between clicking its strongest move and something else that can dent a switch-in.

-5 HP
-15 SpD
-Knock Off
-Body Press

spD spread by Guingil

I think Knock Off removal is the most elegant solution to the power problem to limit it to Darkest Lariat or Crunch, while Beak Blast still does a LOT so -10 atk or -analytic is healthy.

The spread should guarantee benchmarks like getting 2HKOd by Make It Rain and getting KOd by Doom Desire + Earth Power which I think is good while also taking a bit of physdef along with it not so its not taking every physdef move under the sun with ease and keeping the Volcarona check aspect while losing the Chugg check aspect so thats a +. No Body Press to have some actual hard checks instead of just soft checks and Cyclohm.

Softening up Obliteryx's Special Defense gives it a much-needed vulnerability. Maximum HP spreads with no investment in Special Defense are now always 2HKOed by Make it Rain and Chuggalong's unboosted Clangling Scales (while still avoiding an OHKO from the latter's +2 attacks if you steal a Special Defense boost).

My initial proposal was cutting Stealth Rock. I asked the playerbase about how important they felt SR was for Obliteryx, and opinions were varied: some said Obliteryx is the best Stealth Rock setter in CAP and has a low opportunity cost for slotting it as its fourth move. For others, SR pales in comparison to disruptive sets with Taunt or Opportunist-geared sets with Sucker Punch. Others still said that Obliteryx is so bulky it can survive a boosted attack and trade anyway, so even Opportunist doesn't need priority. In fact, there was no definitive answer on whether SR was better on Analytic or Opportunist, or if the ability mattered at all (contrary to my assumption that it was Analytic sets primarily ran Rocks). My takeaway would perhaps be that while Stealth Rock is not necessary for Obliteryx's viability, it is useful role compression and not overshadow-y or harmful enough to the rest of the kit as well as to the metagame to warrant removal.

However, CAP's premier spinners, Equilibra and Mollux are special attackers and have their matchups improved by the Special Defense cut. Libra KOes 70% of the time with Doom Desire + Earth Power if Obliteryx decides to Roost now, where it could almost never do so earlier. Which seems fine, because it was not intentional design for Obliteryx to become the best Rocks setter (and even if it was, it was more through Beak Blast's burn chance stopping spinners. This was not very relevant because you can KO most spinners with Beak Blast anyway LOL).

The nerfs are meant to trim Obliteryx down to closer-to-bare essentials.

I was curious to see how Piptochi's argument that we needed to contribute to the hazards game would age. I believe the trend of Stealth Rock usage is that it doesn't dominate usage but good players run it more because they are hazard merchants. Some of the best players in CAPPL have run it in their games, and spoo admitted to this:

Still, Sucker Punch, Taunt, and the more niche Encore and Body Press have all seen use. Sucker Punch will most likely be boosted by the Analytic removal/its synergy with Opportunist. Considering how strong Obliteryx has been, SR is good but somewhat of a bonus. Same for Defog: sure, it'd be good to have for the meta, but it is contributing to Obliteryx's concept?

-12 SpD ensures we get 2HKOed by Chuggalong's Sludge Bomb and consecutive uses of Make it Rain, which seem like enough of a nerf to let special attackers make progress into us while not flipping too many matchups (we still punish reckless Clangorous Soul, for eg). None of the interactions designed around Beak Blast start from the SpD, and making it more average allows these relationships to be more of the "pressure" kind. (We still deal with some Calm Mind users with Tera)

I believe this will allow us to really study the core aspects of Obliteryx's kit and whether all the strengths we've talked about are enough.

-Adding Defog to Terry´s movepool gives him a real niche on being the only non ground-weak defogger who also has a good MU vs :gholdengo: or :ogerpon-wellspring: /:Ogerpon:
-Already made my statement on Analytic, so i only gonna say i disagree with the idea of Natural Cure or any other Competitive ability like Thermal Exchange (Sorry Ix) :psysad:

-6 Spe

Will be my final submission, mostly reiterating my thoughts above but i like the -6 instead of -5 speed more. Have been swayed by the arguments regarding rocks and defog and i think i would rather see oblit contribute as removal to hazard play instead of a hazard generator.

I'd just like to remind everyone submitting stat changes that both the OP & earthflax's posts urge against large stat changes. I know "Large Stat Changes" and "small to moderate adjustment" sounds a bit nebulous, so to put it into a bit of practical perspective, every single stat point removed is an effective -8 EV investment. This compounds very fast the more points are removed, subs like guingil's and pablo's are effectively removing 128/160 EVs respectively, literally an entire half or more of an investment bar. If you wish to explore stat nerfs as an avenue for balancing, it is critical to analyze your work and try to restrict oneself to as little of a reduction as possible to achieve your design goal, and to a lesser extent to keep changes localized to a single stat. We have living proof of what happen when post-play stat adjustments can result in 'over-balancing' a CAP with Saharaja (my beloved), which got a massive 27 points reduced out of it's BST, in 3 different stats, that compounded into dropping the mon's viability more than was desired.

On the other side of the coin, would also like to inform everyone submitting -Knock Off to know that that is a substantial removal that easily classifies as a moderate adjustment on it's own (like the equivalent of dropping the CAP from A+/A to B+ in the VR), and adding any other changes on top of that is subject to well over-shooting the intended "small to moderate" adjustments we're looking for here. I won't be voting for -Knock regardless, but spammernoob's sub has so far been the only one doing it to feel proportionate to its impact.

I am in agreement that the vast majority of the proposed changes so far have been too heavy-handed. I think PPL should be focused on what is most objectionable about Obliteryx.

I don’t think Analytic should ever have gotten onto Obliteryx in the first place. We didn’t design around it in stats and it is predictably very strong on it. I also think Obliteryx is a little too bulky considering its general level of power and innate survivability due to its typing, Roost, and ability to force switches. Therefore, I felt some stat nerfs were on the table. Body Press gets the axe as that level of coverage is generally unwelcome on a mon that does as much as Obliteryx does with just its STAB moves.

I don’t understand why there’s suddenly so much Defog support. I feel like we’ve identified that Obliteryx succeeds at its concept and is viable in the metagame and just needs a couple changes to tune down its power level to be balanced. That doesn’t sound like there should be a reason to add anything to its kit. If Defog was this necessary to the mon, then it should’ve been brought up during moves. It’s fine with Stealth Rock and it should stay that way.

Honestly I feel like -Analytic is the only change Obliteryx really needs to achieve balance, but spoo's post outlining it's annoying mixed defensive spreads convinced me a bulk hit definitely wouldn't be remiss. -10 HP is effectively a negative of 80 EVs, you can reach both of the defensive benchmarks spoo outlined (double woger cudgel & ghold rain) but with 0 invest for Atk or Spe, which I think is fine. Mon should be encouraged to choose a defensivee angle if it wants any offensive benchmarks. Also kept all my stat nefs in HP for consistency, and because Opportunist's existence has the potential to complicate any Def/SpD hits imo.

-10 Atk
-5 Spe
+15 SpAtk
- Knock Off
+ Defog

This is somewhat a hybrid of multiple suggestions attempting to turn Obliteryx away from the offensive Analytic sets but taking a different approach from just removing Analytic as I'm still of the opinion that whilst it is currently problematic, an attack reduction on top of the removal of Knock Off would help prevent KO's previously mentioned by Volsur but overall reduce the damage output with the BP drop from Knock Off to Crunch or Darkest Lariat to where support Opportunist sets are more frequent especially with the addition of having Defog ontop of the currently used Stealth Rocks. -5 Spe as mentioned by Tracey causes Obliteryx to be naturally slower by some common offensive/defensive checks to Obliteryx.

I can see the argument of Analytic still being more the favorable option as it's the easiest way to remove the ability prediction game if we convert it to NCA or in Poosh's case, an ability like Pressure which has good use on a more support Obliteryx but also gives away the ability immediately to not have the prediction game whilst Opportunist likely still being the more favored ability as the primary. If this is the case then I'd swap out -10 Atk for -Analytic +Pressure and swap +15 SPAtk for +5 SpAtk in line with the stat change.

-10 HP

-Encore

Nothing very original, mostly just agree with the discussion tagging Analytic as problematic and Obliteryx as too strong in general, tackling the bulk primarily. I do think we should also reduce it’s unpredictability as much as possible, theres no reason Obliteryx should randomly get to destroy a very reasonable check like ttar, and I don’t see justification in keeping the other applications of bpress. Encore wasn’t talked about much, wasn’t seen much either, but it’s one of those moves that can randomly cost you a ton of momentum because you reasonably expected it would not be there.
The bird works very well with its standard options, and the added unpredictability if the more niche options mostly just makes Obliteryx more toxic.

Consider this a 48-hour warning.

My preliminary slate includes the following packages:
quziel (-Analytic, -Body Press, -Stealth Rock, +Defog, +NCA)
spoo (-Analytic, -Stealth Rock, -7HP, -5SpDef, +2SpAtk, +Defog, +NCA)
Guingil (-Analytic, -12SpDef, +NCA)
Zetalz (-Analytic, -10HP, +NCA)

If you'd like to speak on any inclusions or omissions, then this would be the time to do so. Cheers!
