CAP 4 CAP 4 - Sprite Submissions

This is the first draft of my entry. I like the idea of him holding up some sludge ready to throw because it really shows how much of a poison type the DLL is. The hand in the dirt emphasises the ground aspect of this pokemon. Critique away!

I really like yours Legacy Rider! I think its because it doesn't look as crowded as some of the others. BUT, upon closer observation, I only see 7 hands. D:

Here's the latest update to my sprites. I changed the top front right hand to have some more articulation in the fingers and to make it look more three-dimensional.

I also came up with a shiny coloring scheme. I call it the "Black Widow" coloring. Black is a cool shiny color IMO, and it differentiates my sprites from some of the others. I also think it accentuates the "spider" side of Cartoons' design.

legacy: UberMunch is right. There's no hint of an eighth arm anywhere. I hope you'll end up cleaning the lines up. You should've done that before colouring.

DJD: The closest top right hand is better, though the fingers are too short in comparison to all the other hands (don't shoot me). I'm kinda surprised that you went with the all too popular red and black colours for your shiny considering that it's rather overused in many kinds of art.

I'm bored, so i'll make an icon. No animation this time though. I don't have the proper tools anymore.

I still like yours Doug and I'm actually quite satisfied with it. I think it's ready polls already (except it needs a back sprite ;). Is the smile the only gender difference?

Wyverii could you please explain what you mean by cleaning the lines up? Are you talking about the black outline ones or some other ones. This is the first sprite I've made so I have no idea.
And yeah the eighth arm should be coming.

the first one's colors really need a different tone.

I've finished desaturizing my sprites and miscellaneous edits.

The first thing you'll notice are the new shiny colors, the backsprite shading (I'm so glad NP does these so I can figure out how to do it right >_<), and the fist.

The fist was hard. No lie. It took me two days (not that I worked the whole time...) to do. It's not perfect, but it's pretty good imo.

The shiny colors were on a whim. I had a yellow/gold for the center, but I like the darker grey/black more. I personally like it more than the other shiny because it doesn't have that bright blue that I couldn't get rid of even through changing the hue slightly or changing the saturation a lot. The purple is kind of like on the other sprite, but it's darker and it looks different with the other colors there.

So... here's the new collection:

*whew*, finally done for the night... Crap, a slight inconsistancy with the backsprites. I'll fix it in the morning.

Comments?

Based on comments, I've revised my sprites a little more.

I changed the body color of the normal sprite, because the color I was using looked to much like human flesh (Caucasian). I moved it to a more golden color, which also brightened up the sprite. I also freshened up the face color as well.

I made the female ears a little longer than the male, to give additional differentiation other than the facial expression.

I added the little cuffs or armbands that Cartoon's has in his design. I've been meaning to do that all along, but I wanted to get the arms and hand position settled before adding this final touch.

To Gengar Master and others who think the back top hands should be changed -- I tried. But all the other positions made something look really wrong -- the hands, the arms, the elbow balls, or the perspective. The current position is really the best I could do with such limited space and such aggressive foreshortening. I think the two key features of my sprite are the foreshortened perspective and the detailed hands. Unfortunately, that imposes severe limitations on what I can do in certain places on the sprite. I've tried my best to incorporate as much feedback as possible.

It's come a long way from the first sprite I posted a few days ago. I've made six major versions of this thing. Here's a comparison:

Thanks to everyone who has commented on how to improve it. I will be making back sprites next. Since I've spent so much time on this, I figure I might as well go all the way and make a full submission. It's been aggravating at times, but this has actually been a lot of fun.

I don't think it's cool when there are genuinely noticeable differences between male and female sprites, such as in Doug's where the male looks like this =| and the female looks like this :3. Or with Revenankh. Just pick which one looks better and roll with it for both sprites. Things like horn sizes are really all that are necessary, or else which ever gender becomes the secondary sprite will just end up looking silly.

Agreeing with Oxy. Doug, before you start the backsprite ( if version six is your ultimate, complete and total one hundred per cent dead end no-turning-back version ), I would get rid of the male's facial expression. It looks really... angry ( to me ). I'm sorry, but I really don't like it. Doesn't seem very fitting for a utility to be fast and furious. I like the female sprite's facial expression because it looks a lot more benign and benevolent, like a Utility Pokémon.

P.S., gender differences based on facial expression may be viewed as PI, so I wouldn't advise it. Just a small word of advice. I would keep it at the ear/horn differentiation.

I decided to waste a bit of time doing a sprite, like I did during the first CAP.
I completely forgot how tough it was. Over four hours, and I have this mess.

Not only that, I've pretty much crashed on the Back Sprite. Ugh, I don't think I'll continue...

You know Doug, I think I just realized why I'm having a problem with your sprite

Your sprite looks like a fully colored Red/Blue/Green sprite. I mean, I know that's all style, but from the expressions, to the pale coloring choice in the regular sprite, to the super realistic hands, to the simple way you approached the sprite. It looks more like Generation 1 sprite than a Generation IV. The new ones look more and more like the anime, while Gen 1 was just stylized, much like your own.

There's obviously nothing really wrong with it. Hell, that bottom right hand that's crawling towards us is easily my favorite hand out of all the sprites. But when I compare yours and Wyverii's, I don't think - hey two different spriting attempts. I think that yours is what the DLL used to look like, and Wyverii's is what it looks like now.

Absolution is completely right. However, I love it. Generation I had some of the coolest sprites. Compare Dragonite to DLL:

It's the same style, but it looks great.
RBY Dragonite is the best sprite ever. Period.

Yikes! I never played the RBY games, so I had no idea how close my base sprite body color is to RBY colors. I liked my colors until I saw that side-by-side. Now I think my normal sprite colors look way too bland. Even if some folks like it, I don't want my sprite to look "retro".

I'm going to try some other stuff out and see if I can punch it up a bit.
