A new Tyranitar Set I've been Pondering for a Sandstorm Team..

Introducing the creation of Techtar:

Tyranitar@ Chople Berry
Ability: Sandstream
EVs: 252 Def/ 216 SpcDef/ 42 HP
Nature: Impish
-Stealth Rocks
-Thunder Wave
-Roar
-Rock Slide/Stone Edge/Earthquake

The basic premise I'm sure is easy enough to see. With Sandstorm in effect, Ttar's special defense gets a boost to 420 while its defense is at 350. It's enough to take a good beating. The Chople Berry is for the pesky x4 fighting moves which could break through the defenses.

From there, he's mostly tech. He sets up Stealth Rocks, Twaves, and roars for the switch. If you get the Twave off, you can go for the Rock Slide to try and flinch the opponent, making it harder to attack back. EQ and Stone Edge would just be for the most damage.

So, thoughts?

You also need to be able to survive a Choice Specs Alakazam. I dont know how well your defenses will hold up against a focus blast from him but after two hits, you might not survive. You either have to switch or t-wave him fast and then roar him away, or paraflinch him

Well, the thing about the Ttar is that he is mostly there for the support in the team I'm building.

Unlike many other teams where is actually the crux, I'm using him to literally just do some things before he runs out of uses. The rest of my team is meant to take care of other things. He's my lead, so he's not entirely meant to survive, just hurt them a bit.

Then you should have no problems taking care of business with him as your lead. You can actually use him to switch in on psychic attacks. Good luck with your team

The thing about Rock Slide, is that you are pretty slow and you wont be outspeeding anything except for Tanks, so you wont be flinching a lot.

Stant, just for future reference, if you post a "new" or "different" set that hasn't been used you should include damage calculations to justify it since most people here will want to see them. Such as, how much does a Choice Specs Alakazam's Focus Blast do to it etc. Here is a thread for reference that presenting a set very good, try following a similar format : http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36925 .

I'll test the set on Shoddy later and post what a I think.

I'm sorry, Caelum. I'm unfortunately at work right now...and even moreso I don't have enough knowledge to be able to go through tests or anything.

If you could do the test that you are talking about it would be a huge help.

If this is going to be used as a lead, I suggest you consider Lum Berry. I see way more lead-off Sleep moves than I do fighting moves.

Oh, wow. I might steal this. *steals*

I really like sets like these that use common Pokemon in a non-standard way. Nice job.

I'll test it out and see if another hold item could do better, but this looks pretty solid.

EDIT: Like Syberia said, I think that Lum berry would be better. The only fighting move from a lead that I can think of is HP Fighting on Spiritomb, and Focus Blast on Gengar. And the latter has Hypnosis, as well.

If you find a better item, let me know! I struggled to think of one but ended with the Chople when I realized that a Fighting move might be able to crush him.

@ Syberia: Good point. I think I'll do some test fights with some people and see which I encounter more...but i bet you're right about more sleep.

Don't double post! D:

And, yeah, I'll test it. The item can probably change depending on the other team members. If you have a sleep-absorber, Chople could work fine.

good set. it have impressive defenses, and even without attack EVs, it can hurt somethings (azelf, arodactyl) bad. Even a Double-wall deoxys will have problems, since it wont Taunt a TTar, fearing Pursuit/crunch and will reflect. then you cripple him with t-wave.

A paralyzed double-screen Deoxys can still do its job, though, as it'll throw up Reflect first, and then it won't be dying to Rock Slide any time soon.

I've tested this set...not too bad. I doubt Deoxys will taunt so you can paralyze it. I tried Crunch in place of Roar and sadly it didn't OHKO Dugtrio T_T. Maybe some attack EV's would help? Not sure there.

Infernape leads are pretty common, and STABed Close Combat spells death for an unprepared Tyranitar.

As a general rule you should always max HP before you max defenses. There are cases where this isn't the best route, but on something like Tyranitar who already has stupid high defenses, you should be maxing hs HP before going into Def and SpDef.

At any rate, being slow and having a huge number of weaknesses is generally bad for a support pokemon. Tyranitar is certainly a great pokemon, but nearly every common lead in the game, barring Azelf, hits him for super effective damage. I know that no other viable pokes learn SR/T-wave/Roar, but all three of those are horribly common moves on other pokemon, and honestly I would rather Roar/WW with something that doesn't have 7 weaknesses.

Im trying it on shoddy now. lets see how it goes
EDIT: my first opponent was a Dragonite so it didnt go so well... I paralized him, SRed and Rockslided for the KO but was left with 13% from his focus blast
