Concussions

I kind of had one today at the skatepark. And I have this major headache. This guy told me I shouldn't sleep or else I'll go into a coma. I was wondering what could I do to bring this headache down and hopefully feel better in the morning.

First, I would go to a hospital to see the severity of the concussion and get it looked by a professional. I would also start to be a bit more careful because you can get a concussion a lot more easier after taking one. Also getting more concussions will make you start to have dementia, sink into depression and you might harm yourself or a loved one.

My concussion wasn't that severe. I just don't remember how I fell. Everything else I can kinda remember. Spitting Blood,Laughing,Skating a little more then taking the bus home. But I'm just curious if it's ok to sleep normally without having someone check up on you

When I got one I went to the hospital. I was on my bike, trying to jump of some stairs near my house, I landed my tire sideways and the whole bike flipped over causing my head to smash into the ground. That was pretty stupid of you for not going. There's a bunch of things that could go wrong.

yeah i know. but the only thing is my parents didn't get home till an hour ago. and i dont think they'd want to drive back in the same direction they just came from. oh and i was spitting blood cause i bit my lip i guess. not because of me hitting my head. the bit was pretty deep lol

Frankly, this is something that should not be taken lightly. I'm speaking seriously, an untreated concussion can lead to death, or brain damage. Mind you that's a bit severe, but it does happen. Going to the hospital is definately something you should do, not only for peace of mind, but also to make sure that you're not injured worse than you think you are.

Dude if you're parents are unwilling to drive their son to the hospital for a potential major medical problem, then you have more problems than just a headache.

I mean, shit, it's serious enough that you're afraid to go to sleep; you should probably have it looked at by someone who knows what they're talking about.

(Chances are you will be OK anyway, but do you really want to risk it?)

I'm not a medical doctor so take my advice with a grain of salt (someone here is a medical student on this board iirc, where the hell is he?), but you are generally fine to go to sleep. In fact, it's probably best for you to go to sleep. This was a common myth, however, it is now believed to be perfectly fine to sleep. For your headache, just take ibuprofen (Motrin, Aleve). That should do the trick. Don't take Aspirin though, it could potentially cause internal bleeding. You probably don't have to go to the emergency room since it doesn't sound like it was serious, but there really is no harm in doing it. Symptoms can sometimes be misleading regarding the severity of the problem, so a CT scan is probably a way to not only quell your fears about it but as a precautionary measure. Of course, a doctor would decide if one was warranted. The biggest issue I see with it is that you aren't able to recall your injury which could suggest something more problematic, so I'd probably go to hospital if not today then tomorrow just as a precaution.

And yeah, if you have a serious injury your parents shouldn't be bothered by having to drive to the hospital.

Edit: Random google search gives symptoms of when to seek medical advice, Mayo Clinic is pretty respected so I think it's safe to trust what they are saying. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/concussion/DS00320/DSECTION=when-to-seek-medical-advice

The worst concussions are always the ones that don't look severe. I'm not a doctor, but I've worked on my sports medicine team enough to know that if you do have a head injury of ANY kind it is definitely in your best interest to get it checked out by a doctor.

Please please please PLEASE go get yourself looked at.

That'd be my brother SirRaven, he's in college and decided smogon is too good for him now. :P

alright. well i just woke up. the headache is still there but not bugging me. idk if seeing the school nurse would help but to the doctors? it's not as easy as it sounds if your living in Los Angeles,California

All she's going to do is tell you to go to the doctor's. :P

Just walk into the ER of a nearby hospital and they'll take you and call your parents for you.

alright. well i just got home and my friend was able to bring me some advil. made me feel alot better. but i wasn't able to take it till around 11am. made me feel alot better. but im kinda worried about the concussion in the long run.

Yeah. As someone who has been diagnosed with 5 concussions over the past 6 years, it's a must to get it. My first one was terrible, and I didn't start feeling the real effects until about 2 hours.

Hour 1 after concussion - Slight fuzziness in the eyes
Hour 1.5 - Loss of focus in the eyes, heavy dizziness
Hour 2 - Dizziness weighs so much inable to walk
Hour 2.5 - loss of long term memory for a period of time, inability to recall what happened
Hour 3 - Severe Stomach Pains
Hour 4 - Major Barfing

the concussion is tricky because your brain seems like it can shake it off until a certain point, and from there it just gives. Sit still, don't move a lot, and get help

Clearly you don't understand the lengths that (most) parents will go to for their child. I really doubt your parents would mind driving back in the same direction when doing so ensures that their child will not possibly go into a coma.

Go see a doctor before you may possibly regret not doing so.
